Fantastic High Springs Events by Michelle Wescott SSAS’s Annual Gainesville Artifact & Fossil Show by Michelle Wescott The High Springs Main Street Program works very hard keeping the Main Street of High Springs hopping with events and bringing in shoppers to the local businesses. They also work hard to improve the image of the downtown area at the same time as keeping it unique and in its original historic form. They do this by having several ongoing events throughout the year. On the very rst Friday of every month they have “Fantastic Fridays” that is held all along the main street area. Each month has a different theme. It is a family event where you can walk the street enjoying nice music and food and even a carriage ride. The theme for the May’s Fantastic Friday is “Mothers & Memories”. They are also having a classic car show that day with about 30 cars. The businesses stay open later on Fantastic Friday and they have events for children of all ages. The Main Street Program also holds events such as the Mutts & Pups event in March. They have a farmer’s market every Thursday with lots of vegetables, fruits, and handicrafts. Every year they also host the Crescent Cuisine. This year it will be held on May 22 at the Great Outdoors Opera House. It is an event where area chefs present their special dishes. This year’s entertainment will be provided by the Armstrong Brothers. High Springs is a very nice little town. I love going to Fantastic Fridays. I feel very at home on Main Street during Fantastic Fridays. The carriage rides and music set the mood perfectly. Also, down by Music Junction, they often have live bands playing. There are usually concession stands or event a fundraiser cook out. It is a great event to attend and well worth the drive! The Sunshine State Archaeological Society will be holding their annual Gainesville Artifact & Fossil Show on Saturday, June 5. It will be held at the Clarion Inn in Gainesville from 8:00AM-4:00PM. There will be a guest speaker at the hotel Friday Night June 4 th at 7:00p.m. and the public is welcome to attend and is free of charge. This is the 22 nd year the SSAS has held the show. The goals of the Gainesville Artifact Show and festivals they hold are to promote the study of archaeology, to encourage the study and curation of prehistoric artifacts. They also want to encourage cooperation between professional and amateur archaeologists. Sunshine State is the Florida Branch of Central States Archaeological Society, the largest amateur archaeology group in the country. They strive to develop a better understanding among students and collectors of archaeological materials, professional and non- professional, as well as museums and institutions of high learning, and to further understanding by providing a means to publish articles of interest to both professional and amateur archaeologists. If you are interested in becoming a member or learning more about the SSAS please be sure to attend the show on June 5, 2010 or at www.paleoenterprises.com/ sunshine_state.htm

SSAS’s Annual Gainesville Artifact & Fossil Show by Michelle Wescott

The High Springs Main Street Program works very hard keeping the Main Street of High Springs hopping with events and bringing in shoppers to the local businesses. They also work hard to improve the image of the downtown area at the same time as keeping it unique and in its original historic form. They do this by having several ongoing events throughout the year. On the very fi rst Friday of every month they have “Fantastic Fridays” that is held all along the main street area. Each month has a

different theme.

They have a farmer’s market every Thursday with

lots of vegetables, fruits, and handicrafts.

Every year they also host the Crescent Cuisine. This year it will be held on May 22 at the Great Outdoors Opera House. It is an event where area chefs present their special dishes. This year’s entertainment will be provided by the Armstrong Brothers.

High Springs is a very

nice little town.

It will be held

at the Clarion Inn in Gainesville from 8:00AM-4:00PM. There will be a guest speaker at the hotel Friday Night June 4th at 7:00p.m. and the public is

welcome to attend and is free of charge. This is the 22nd year the SSAS has held the show.

I am known as one to speak my mind about many things. I know that some people like that about me and some people hate me for it. However, it is who I am and I am not one to pretend I am someone else. My message from Michelle is going to be a complaint fest this time. And I welcome emails and expect a few people to tell me I am cruel and that I’m going straight to hell but really, I don’t care. I know who I am and what I am and the people that know and love me know this too and that is the only thing that matters in life. Homeless people. I am pretty sure there is a law about loitering on the streets and in walk ways and such. I believe there are different levels of homeless people as there are in society. There are homeless people, who had bad luck and are trying their hardest to correct the situation, then there are the homeless that choose to live off the land and keep to themselves, then there are the homeless that sit in front of stores and of all places in

front of the courthouse begging for money, food, cigarettes. They will not make one effort to actually better themselves. Just lie around and sleep and beg. There is nothing more I hate then trying to get out of my car and walk into the courthouse in Gainesville past 15-20 homeless people begging for money and cigarettes and whatever else. However, here is the kick in the ass…. If I WAS to give them ANYTHING… I could be arrested. How insane and crazy is that? It’s the law. And I can bet you for sure that I would be arrested out of kindness and tossed in jail before the numerous homeless people breaking the law by loitering and begging RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE COURTHOUSE… In some states if you feed even one homeless person you will be arrested. I suppose I just wanted an outlet for my frustration of today’s world. Yes homeless people have been around forever and forever will be, especially with today’s economy. However, it is the right of tax payers and citizens of the areas to be able to walk down the street or into the courthouse without being bombarded by a bunch of homeless people begging for food and money. Especially when the tax payers and citizens will be arrested for doing so. Where is the justice there?

May 2010 All Around Alachua Issue 9, Vol. 1, Page 3 Gainesville Home Sales Trends

by Coleen DeGroff, MBA

ALACHUA COUNTY HOME SALES - MARCH 2010During the month of March, 171 homes sold in Alachua County.Here is how the sales break down: 2 bedrooms or less: 14 (3/09: 10) Median sales price: $90,000 (3/09: $124,700) 3 bedrooms: 79 (3/09: 74) Median sales price: $159,900 (3/09: $167,800) 4 or more bedrooms: 43 (3/09: 33) Median sales price: $260,000 (3/09: $330,000) Condos/townhomes: 35 (3/09: 25) Median sales price: $98,000 (3/09: $110,000)Average Days on Market: 210 (3/09: 166)

What this means for sellers: We are still in a buyer’s market. There are tons of homes available for a smaller pool of buyers to choose from. Your property needs to stand out, both in terms of condition AND price, in order for buyers to even entertain the idea of

visiting it. Price your home competitively....what do I mean by that? Look at the homes in your neighborhood...where are they priced? You need to be there or below in order to attract buyers.

What this means for buyers: You are still in the driver’s seat. There are plenty of deals to be had, and savvy sellers will work with you to get their place sold. At the same time, that doesn’t mean you should run around putting in lowball offers.

If you love a home, and you really want it, ask your real estate agent to run the comparables, looking at how much homes have recently sold for in the area. That will give you a very good idea of what a seller will most likely be willing to accept for their property. Many sellers are in a tight spot fi nancially and may not be able to come down as much as you would like without

ending up going into a short sale situation that could put their family’s fi nancial health at risk. Show some mercy while you are negotiating a deal.Coleen DeGroff, MBA, e-PROColdwell Banker M. M. History of the Newberry Watermelon FestivalBy: Michelle Wescott/Tia Bonnell

THE OLDEST CONTINUOUS WATERMELON FESTIVAL in the U.S.

1945 was the year that WWII Service men and woman were returning to their communities. Dwight Sullivan of the Newberry American Legion, with help from the Women’s Auxiliary and other community members, worked to welcome these men and women home, and to showcase our local agricultural produce the WONDERFUL WATERMELON. As years have passed, the festival has continued to grow as a community event, sponsored by the American Legion, Newberry Chamber of Commerce, the City of Newberry, and fi nally, Newberry Watermelon Festival Inc. Proceeds of the festival have always been used to improve our community, grant scholarships to local students, and support our Historic Little Red School

House and museum. The 65th Annual Newberry Watermelon Festival will be held May 15, 2010. The 3rd Annual Hospice Rodeo will be held May 14th and 15th. The Watermelons are always grown by local farmers and given to the festival goers for FREE. Events this year will include a carnival, free melon slices, queen contests, vendors and close with a Hospice Benefi t Rodeo.

The festival will be Canterbury Equestrian Showplace on Newberry Rd. On May 15th there will be a WOW dog pageant at 8:30a.m., a Parade at 9:00a.m. and many activities through out the afternoon such as Watermelon Rolling, Seed Spitting, and more. Folks from everywhere come for the fun and excitement and to enjoy meeting friends and family. The festival is known to provide: “A Fresh Slice of Tradition”

Last month, we discussed Fitness Industry Lies - Part 2 (All You Need is “Three 20-Minute Sessions Each Week!”). This is the third part in a series of articles covering some of the biggest lies the fi tness industry has told you.Lie Number 3: You Have to Train Like a Bodybuilder

I’m puzzled whenever I see someone training at a fi tness center or gym using a typical bodybuilding workout that they most likely took from one of the latest muscle magazines. Most of the time, I see them performing too many exercises while training too long and with too much talking instead of training. It seems like a lot of wasted time and effort for the amount of work being performed.

Unless you are a bodybuilder and can devote the time and energy to train like one, don’t follow their workout routines! Bodybuilders look the way they do because they have the right genetics as well as the time, energy, money (for food and supplements) and lifestyle that makes it possible to train 4-7 days a week for an hour or more each session.

For the average person with a full-time job, family and other commitments, a bodybuilding workout is not the

most effective and time effi cient way to train.

Think of the body as one piece rather than a collection of body parts that need to be trained individually. In previous blogs on my web site, I’ve talked about focusing on the body’s natural movements and using exercises that give the most bang for the buck (i.e. compound, multi-joint exercises that work multiple muscle groups) to achieve your fi tness and fat loss goals.

The study below proves that additional isolation exercises are not necessary if you’re already performing compound, multi-joint exercises because muscle growth is not regionally specifi c.

Here’s the study that examines this in a bit more detail: REFERENCE: Rogers et al. The Effect of Supplemental Isolated Weight-Training Exercises on Upper-Arm Size and Upper-Body Strength Human Performance Laboratory, Ball State University, Muncie, IN.NSCA Conference Abstract (2000)

The researchers compared the effects of a weight training program on 5RM strength and arm circumference and divided the subjects into two groups.

Group One performed four compound upper body exercises such as deadlifts, bench presses, squats and pull-ups.

Group Two used the same program but included biceps curls and triceps extensions.

The results showed that both groups signifi cantly increased strength and arm

size. However, the addition of direct arm training to group two produced no additional effect on strength or arm circumference after 10 weeks of training.

The additional localized training did not result in anything that the bigger compound exercises didn’t provide.

This means that you can remove all the additional exercises that are not giving you the results you deserve and focus on the ones that do. Removing additional exercises that directly work your arms, shoulders and calves will also save you time and help you achieve your goals faster!

If you’re performing squats, dead lifts, lunges, push-ups, bench presses, chin-ups, overhead presses, rowing movements and sprints, you’re hitting all the major muscles of the body necessary to help you lose fat, gain muscle, increase strength, prevent injuries and become better conditioned while also giving you a nice set of arms, shoulders and calves.

At Underground Fitness Revolution, we utilize training programs that focus on the entire body each session using exercises that work the most muscles and burn the most

calories. We are able to get our clients results training three times per week for less than an hour each session.

If losing fat, gaining muscle and being in the best shape of your life is your goal, join Underground Fitness Revolution now! Our next Orientation and Grocery Store Tour is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 and our next phase of training begins May 24. Not sure if we are the place for you? Try us out for free! The UF CALS Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament will be held at the Mark Bostick Golf Course located at the Uni-versity of Florida to benefi t the CALS Scholarship and Endow-ment. The event will be held on Friday May 14th with registra-tion at noon and a shotgun start at 1:00p.m. The registration in-cludes: range balls, green fees, a cart, participation gift, and a barbeque dinner following the tournament.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 5 teams. There will also be hole prizes and door prizes.

The CALS scholarship is for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The mission of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences is to provide undergraduate and graduate stu-dents with a high quality educa-tion that results in knowledge and abilities for gainful em-ployment and additional edu-

cation, productive citizenship, and lifelong learning in the ar-eas of food, agriculture, natural resources, and life sciences as they relate to human resourc-es, the environment, individual communities, and a global soci-ety.

Gainesville Area Rowing by Michelle WescottThere are so many

things to do and events to take place in if you know where to look. Sometimes they are not advertised much. But they are there! Do you like being out on the water? Have you ever seen the water fi rst thing in the morning when it is serene and quiet? The Gainesville Area Rowing sees these wonderful sights all the time on Newnan Lake. The Gainesville Rowers have many different levels of rowing clubs from middle school, high school and adult groups.

The Gainesville Area Rowing has early morning rows and evening rows. They can watch the sun rise and set while they row across the lake. I can

not think of a more relaxing way to start and end my day! They are having a Learn to Row Course starting April 30 and lasting through May 2, 2010.

Gainesville Area Rowing is a non-profi t corporation that promotes rowing as a sport for high school students, middle school students and adults in the Gainesville and Alachua County area. They teach physical fi tness, nutrition, and psychological skills that lead rowers to heightened mental and physical self-awareness.

They depend solely on the support and work of its members for the organization to stay in existence. Through the participation of the members, Gainesville Rowing Club provides the equipment and coaching staff needed. The club does not receive any compensation or support from any school or from the Alachua County School Board.

The Gainesville Rowing Club came about in 1998 by two high school rowing clubs joining together.

Pangea Adventure Racing was founded in late 2007 and has grown to become a leader in the Florida adventure racing market. The objective of Pangea Adventure Racing is to introduce people to stimulating, alternative outdoor health and fi tness opportunities, with the greater purpose of giving back through volunteer efforts on local, state and national lands.

Adventure races

consist of foot, bike, and boat disciplines, with additional course challenges sprinkled in along the way. Unlike traditional multi-discipline racing sports, adventure races require navigational skills, each team using a map and compass to pilot their way through a rugged and varied terrain in natural lands. Adventure racing is less about being fast and more about the ability to work well as a team.

People of all athletic abilities do well in our races, even families with children compete! How? Pangea has two race levels, the Sport AR & the Elite AR. The Sport, usually 3 hours in length, is specifi cally designed as an intro level adventure race, yet is challenging enough for even the best teams. Our Elite races vary in length from 6 to 30 hours, and require more experience and physical endurance.

May 11 – August 20,Gainesville, Fla — For

hundreds of years, baskets have been among the most famous of Botswana’s handcrafted utilitarian goods. Now an integral part of the culture, these baskets, primarily made by women of the Bayei and Hambukushu tribes who migrated from Angola, have evolved and become more intricately designed. Botswana baskets have a high commercial value and are marketed worldwide, providing much needed income for the women who make them. “Tears of the Giraffe: Basketry of Botswana,” includes highlights from a collection that Frank Merillat and Dr. Sandra Russo have been assembling for the past ten years.

Frank Merillat fi rst became interested in baskets while traveling to Botswana with his wife, Sandra Russo, for her work with the University of Florida International Center as director of program development and federal relations. During subsequent trips, he began visiting the various cooperatives surrounding the Okavango Delta where the baskets are made, eventually meeting and getting to know several of the basket makers represented in the exhibit. “Tears of the Giraffe”

features a wide range of baskets in the Merillat/ Russo collection and includes contextual photographs and artifacts.

At 3:30 p.m. on May 11 in the Grinter Lobby, Coffee, Cookies and Conversation will provide an opportunity for those interested in learning more about Botswana and the basket collection to interact in an informal discussion with Mr. Merillat and Dr. Russo. This event is free and open to the public.

Grinter Gallery Hours: Monday through Friday: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed weekends and holidays. Grinter Gallery is located in the main lobby of Grinter Hall, next to the University Auditorium, on the University of Florida campus.

In 2006-2007 rowers from 11 other school joined the club.

If you are interested in learning more on how to row, or if you know how and want to join, contact them today. It is a great way to stay in shape and enjoy the beauty Florida has to offer. I myself have never been rowing, until I contacted the Gainesville Rowing Club about letting me write a story for them. I was offered a row on the Lake! I was quiet nervous, but it was truly wonderful!! If you are a High School student contact: Coach Moseley at: 352-219-8236 or [email protected]. If you are in Middle School contact: Coach

Figueroa at 352-219-0717 or [email protected]. If you are an adult contact: Gary Gookin at [email protected].

The adult practice is every Wednesday morning at 6:00a.m., Saturdays at 10:30a.m., Sundays at 8:00a.m., and every weekday evening at 6:15p.m. Don’t forget to join them in the Learn to Row Course and for National Learn to Row Day on June 5th. There will be an open house from 3p.m.-7p.m. This is a free opportunity to try rowing with experienced coached and rowers. There are seats for 48 people to row. Please contact [email protected] for more info or to register
