We aim to:

• Continue to build on partnerships with primary schools: build on pupils’ prior learning

• Make sure that assessing and monitoring pupils’ progress in Key Stage 3 helps to prepare pupils for key stage 4.

Curriculum Reform

Following the removal of National Curriculum Levels, the School developed a single assessment system to be used across Years 7 to 11 based on GCSE grades 9-1.

Key Principles

Students:

• know where they are and how to improve;

• receive effective next step advice;

• have meaningful dialogue with their subject teachers;

• own their subject targets;

• become independent learners for life.

Page 14: Free Options WELCOME Personal Choice Key Stage 3fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · Tuesday Lunchtime (1pm) M1 Junior Band Open to all instrumentalists wanting

Curriculum Reform

In terms of demand:

• grades 7-9 are broadly equivalent to the old grades A-A*; 9 = A**

• grades 4-6 are equivalent to grades C-B and

• grades 1-3 are roughly equivalent to the standard required for grades G-D .

Curriculum Reform

Children are unique and individual.

They progress at different rates and never in straight lines.

Our approach to tracking progress is, therefore, based on the principle that teachers are best placed to know their students and to advise and enthuse them about how to improve – in incremental next steps.

Page 19: Free Options WELCOME Personal Choice Key Stage 3fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/File... · Tuesday Lunchtime (1pm) M1 Junior Band Open to all instrumentalists wanting

Curriculum Reform

Parents and carers should not be surprised or concerned if different children with similar starting points have different teacher targets.

It should be noted that students starting points also vary in different subjects, and that progress routes vary from subject to subject.

Curriculum Reform

For example, the great majority of Year 7 students begin from a lower base in Modern Foreign Languages than they do in Mathematics or English.

In terms of languages our prospectus states,’ all students coming into year 7 will learn French as a first foreign language. In addition a second foreign language , either German or Spanish, is allocated to all’.

Our targets are designed to incorporate these differences and ensure we aim for excellent progress for all of our students.

Attainment that is shaded green in your child’s report puts them in the top 20% in terms of progress nationally.

Behaviour

• From the School’s Policy:

“If we are to create a community in which high quality learning can take place and

all of its members can work happily together, an atmosphere of good order is vital. School rules and procedures exist to foster this ethos but students are also encouraged to develop self-discipline and

consideration for others.”
