• It is the angle (perspective) from which an artist creates and deals with multiple intelligences.

• Art is: Nonrestrictiveness – artistic freedom, Human Enterprise (for all to enjoy), Communication (what the art piece tells us), and Medium of Expression (what they create with).


What are Multiple Intelligences?

• An angle (perspective) from which we think, learn, create, etc.

• There are 8 different multiple intelligences: Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Body-Kinesthetic, Spatial, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalist.

• The products, the processes, and the experiences (human interactions) that communicate aspects of human living and reality.

What are the four functions of art?

• 1. Enjoyment – Escape from troubles, social occasions, insight to human experiences.

• 2. Political/Social Commentary – Social and political advances, sensitize viewers (EX: AIDS quilt, “American Pie”)

• 3. Therapy – Healing, Child Therapists – abused children draw what might be hard to talk about – series of drawings – follow them to see improvement or ways of progressive treatment.

• 4. Artifact – Senses a particular time and place. Represents culture and environment (Pyramids, Sistine Chapel, The Vietnam Memorial Wall)

• Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty and art, and their relationship to experience.

Art Criticism…

• Does not always mean a negative comment; always striving for analysis (understanding).

• There are two standards for art criticism: Formal (“Craftsmanship”) and Contextual (“Communication”).


What Does it Involve?

• You can have criticism without judgment…

• This can be tricky…you must leave biases and opinions out of your mind!

• You must be open-minded!!!


Formal Criticism

• It is a look at the work itself.

• Analyze the work as we see/hear it.

• What’s inside the frame/song or what we see and hear…


Contextual Criticism

• Related information outside of the work of art…

• Facts of life, about the artist, culture, time and place, social and political statements…

• Both forms of criticism have the same internal approach when analyzing…
