Submitted by Al Prieur, Deputy Supervisor Bedford Township is going to be participating in “Light It Up Blue” for Autism by displaying a blue light. April 2 is the start of the Autism Speaks “Light It Up Blue” campaign in support of people living with autism and autism awareness. It is also the UN sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day. April is World Autism Month. Bedford Township residents are encouraged to participate. There are various ways to be a part of “Light It Up Blue” that includes wearing blue, framing your Facebook profile picture in blue and lighting your home or business blue. More information can be found at https://www.autismspeaks.org/liub A grants committee will be formed with a goal of trying to get more funding for township projects. The Township is looking for interested residents and those with a background in working on grant applications. A list of responsibilities of this committee can be found at bedfordmi.org and clicking on the “Grant Search Committee members needed” option. Applications can be obtained at the Town- ship Hall or on the website by clicking the “Forms and Documents” option and browse under Supervisor. Completed applications should be submitted to the Township Clerk’s Department: Trudy Hershberger, 8100 Jackman Rd., P.O. Box H, Temperance, MI 48182. The Bedford Branch Library is in the middle of a lighting project. Outside and interior lighting is being converted to LED lights, which is expected to make a significant savings on energy costs for the library. To accomplish the project as cost efficiently as possible, Township maintenance workers have been doing a lot of the work. Volunteers from IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) will be doing any required electrical wiring work. The project is about half done and expected to be completed in two weeks. Area historical pictures or artifacts are being sought to display in the Township Supervisor’s office and throughout the Township Hall building. If you have items you would like to share, you can bring them to the Township Hall, 8100 Jackman Rd., Temperance, during regular business hours or call (734) 847-6791 ext. 2 to let them know what you have. Residents with leaves and grass clippings will be able to drop them off in an area in back of the Township Hall. This is for individuals only and not an area for disposal by commercial lawn service businesses. Clippings and leaves must be removed from bags and the empty bags taken with you for disposal. No sticks can be dumped in this area, there will be a dumpster for these. Also, this is not an area to be used for the dumping of garbage, furniture, etc. The area will be under surveillance. Daylight hours are still to be determined but will be flexible for the convenience of residents wishing to use this drop off site. A Bedford Township Government Center Art Contest is in the planning stages. This will be open to elementary school students as well as junior high and high school students in different categories. The group specializes in tradi- tional American and Irish fiddle tunes and takes its name from this local area in a time period when this music was popular. The group is made up of both middle and high school students under the direction of Ann Felder. The Frenchtown Fiddlers have provided music for the past several years at the annual Lantern Tours put on by the Monroe County Historical Museum. They have been fea- tured several times as guest performers at the River Raisin National Battlefield, Monroe County Community College and the Dundee Farmers Mar- ket. Additionally, they offer many community service per- formances around the area at schools, nursing centers and hospitals. Campers have the opportunity to learn more about managing their diabetes, meet other chil- dren who also have type 1 dia- betes and also have a lot of fun. The purpose of this event is to educate parents and kids about DYS camp opportunities and make them both more comfortable taking part in the experience. Kids will meet counselors, see what a typical day is like and try out a few camp songs and crafts. Parents will have the opportunity to get all of their questions answered. DYS is a local, independent, non-profit organization that provides educational and sup- portive services for youth with diabetes. Services are sustained through individual, foundation and corporate charitable contri- butions. All DYS programs are staffed by experienced diabetes educators. Bedford Township is going to be participating in “Light It Up Blue” for Autism by displaying a blue light. April 2 is the start of the Autism Speaks “Light It Up Blue” campaign in support of people living with autism and autism awareness. It is also the UN sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day.
