If your pet has been stolen and then later recovered, ownership of your pet can be challenged. Microchipping is the only way you can prove ownership of your pet (and yes it does happen).

Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet. Inserting a microchip is like a vaccination, it only takes a few seconds. The procedure is very safe and your pet will feel little pain. Once done, your pet’s details, your contact address and phone numbers are entered on a national database.

It is mandatory in all States of Australia (except NT) to microchip your pet, although the requirements vary on the age your pet must be microchipped. Speak to your local Council to determine when your pet must be chipped.

Having your pet microchipped is only the start, you must update your details when you move house and or change your phone number. So many animals find themselves in pounds/shelters across Australia awaiting their family to collect them, but the chip details are not up to date and the owners sadly cannot be contacted.

In Australia there are currently 5 private microchip registries and 1 NSW State government registry:1. Australasian Animal Registry 2. Central Animal Records 3. Petsafe 4. Pet Register 5. HomeSafeID 6. and the NSW State government registry - the NSW Companion Animal Registry

If you are not sure who of the above to contact to update your pet’s details, ask a Veterinarian to scan your pet and they will be able to advise you.

These days microchipping is not only an effective way to ensure you are reunited with your pet, it is also great for keeping out unwanted visitors who may access via your pet door or even neighbouring animals who frequent your yard to eat your pets food! Speak to your Just For Pets Store to find out more about products that are microchip compatible, these include pet doors & food bowls.

5

UPDATE YOUR DETAILS AND SAVE A LIFE

Collars can fall off or be removed and details on pet tags can fade or become outdated. Inserting a microchip means your pet can be easily identified by a ranger, animal shelter or veterinarian regardless of the situation. Once identified, you can be contacted immediately and informed of the location of your pet.

Just like us, Reptiles can get too warm!

IS IT REALLY TOO WARM?The first thing you need to do is make sure it really is too warm. Always check your thermometer: if it reads within the animal’s preference range, then you don’t need to worry!

If it is too hot, here are a few suggestions on cooling down your reptile and amphibian enclosures:

FRESH WATERAt any time of year always make sure you have cool, fresh, clean water available for your reptiles and amphibians. Not only will it keep them hydrated, but also offers a place to cool off in an overheated enclosure

FANReptiles don’t sweat, and therefore can’t be cooled by evaporative cooling. However, a small fan installed in the enclosure may help to create air movement and draw hot air out, possibly reducing the temps by a few degrees.

IMPROVE THE VENTILATIONIf the temperature is a bit warm but not hot enough to require drastic measures then well positioned ventilation may be all thatis needed. By positioning ventilation both at the base of the enclosure as well as at the top convection will help to keep a steady flow of fresh air entering the enclosure as the warmer air rises and escapes the enclosure. This may be enough to keep a comfortable temperature.

ICE CUBESPositioning ice blocks on the top vent of an enclosure will provide cool drops into the enclosure. This won’t dramatically lower the air temperature though, and will increase humidity if allowed to drip on substrate.

You could also pop some ice blocks into the water bowl, but not too many!

FROZEN BOTTLE OF WATEROne of our favourites is to freeze a bottle of

water and sit it in the enclosure. As the bottle defrosts it can cool the enclosure by as much

as 10-15 degrees. Just be very careful about where you put it to

make absolutely sure it won’t fall on the inhabitants.

COOL TILEAnother temporary way of offering a cool retreat is to pre-

cool a slate or ceramic tile in the fridge. It can be positioned in the enclosure where the inhabitant can rest on it to cool down. Likewise a resin hide rock can also be pre-cooled and

partially buried to simulate the coolness of a burrow.

REDUCE THE HEAT COMING IN

Any form of lighting (including UV bulbs) will increase the

temperature. It might be worth switching of all heating and lighting

during the hottest part of the day. Many reptiles need UV lighting but going without for a few hours won’t hurt them in the long run.

Make sure the enclosure is positioned so that they do not receive direct

sunlight through a window. This will dramatically raise

the temperature in the enclosure even on a

cooler day.

If you are unsure, speak to your Just For Pets pet expert!

Baby budgies can be easily identified as the feathering on top of their head has a series of bars that continue down to the cere. The cere is the fleshy are above the beak where the nostrils (nares) are located. When the bird reaches the age of 8-12 weeks the bars start to gradually malt out until eventually the top of the head is completely clear colour. Unfortunately it is not possible to guarantee the sex of the budgie at an early age but after the age of about 3 months old, the cere has turned blue for a cock bird or brown for a hen.

Your new bird will be handed to you in a small “pet box”. This is the best method of transportation, and ensures that your budgie will remain safe and protected until you are ready to install him in his new home. It is not advisable to transport birds in uncovered open cages.

CAGES: Any cage recommended by your Just For Pets pet should be suitable for your pet as they have the experience in the suitable housing of their livestock. They also should be able to house some activity toys as well without cramping exercise space for your bird. Generally the larger the cage the better it is for exercising purposes.

TRANSFERRING YOUR BIRD TO THEIR CAGE WHEN YOU GET HOME: Adopt the following procedure when letting your budgie out of the transport box and into his new

cage. Firstly, position the cage in a room that has a relatively even temperature, away from draughts, and not too near a window as this may cause too much exposure to temperature variations. It should be also be placed in a position where it cannot be interfered with by small children and other pets. Ensure that the cage is set up complete with food and water and initially a small amount of seed should be sprinkled on the floor to ensure that the budgie has enough to eat while he is finding the seed containers.

Ensure the windows and doors are all closed, and then when everything is ready, gently let the budgie walk into their new cage. Do not attempt to force him in or tap the box...let him do it in his own time. At first he may be a bit bewildered, and perhaps even fly around wildly in the unfamiliar surroundings of his new cage. If he does not settle quickly, place a light cloth over the cage covering three sides to offer an extra sense of security.

Over excited children can stress your new budgie, so if children are present, be very conscious of their behaviour at this time. Your bird should be left alone on the first day to readjust. As he regains his confidence, he will begin to explore his new home. Very young birds may just sit on the perch or floor, and the seed scattered on the floor ensures that he finds enough to eat during this time. If after 24 hours, the baby bird has not moved, or is showing no sign of eating, contact your Just For Pets store for further advice.

BUDGIES Budgies are the single most popular pet bird. They are also known as a parakeet in other part of the world including the USA.

Page 9: FREE Spring - Pet Shop Coffs harbour, Brontosaurus Pet ...€¦ · ownership of your pet (and yes it does happen). Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet

9

FEEDING: Budgies are very easy birds to feed and all Just For Pets stores can supply a quality budgie mix consisting of a balanced fresh seed diet. Always ensure, that you purchase a mix that is similar to what the bird has been feeding on prior to you owning him. It is very important that seed and water containers are checked every day, as bugies ‘shuck’ the seeds they eat and leave the empty husks on the top of the seed dish. These shucks should be blown away thus revealing the uneaten seed below. Millet sprays can be provided in small quantities as treats, but not to excess as they can be fattening. Honey bells and seed bars and other treats may also be offered to provide a variation in diet. Another essential is good quality shell grit as this helps part of the budgies digestive system grind up the seed after it has been swallowed.

Cuttlefish and mineral blocks should also be offered, as these provide calcium, other minerals and trace elements that may be lacking in the seed diet. Small quantites of fresh green food may also be provided in the form of well rinsed pieces of fruit and/or vegetables. Always rinse this food as it is possible for residual toxic pesticides to remain on some produce.

TOYS: Toys should not be introduced into your budgies cage while he adjusting to his new surroundings. They should be introduced gradually, starting with a small for example, and then perhaps a ladder before moving onto toys that provide environmental enrichment. Rather than fill the cage with toys, it is better to change the toys from time to time to offer variety for the bird. If your family are out at work every day, the best ‘toy’ could be another budgie, but ensure the cage is of suitable size to accommodate two. The little birds are very sociable by nature and welcome their own species for company.

TAMING/TEACHING TO TALK: To hand time a pet budgie takes time and patience. If your new budgies was not purchased already tamed and it is a young bird, you can hand tame it yourself. Initially, all you should do is position your chair right next to the cage during the evening until your regular presence has created a confidence in him. The next step in taming is to place your hand inside the cage and talk quietly all the time until he becomes accustomed to its presence and ceases to fly around the cage. Eventually he will walk across your palm and will even perch on your finger. Before bringing a budgie out of its cage on your hand, make sure that all doors are shut, fireplaces guarded and windows are closed and curtained. All ornaments that might be knocked down should be removed. Initially it is advisable to stop your pet from flying off by carefully placing a thumb gently over his foot. (also talk to your Just For Pets store about wing clipping). Leave him on your finger for less than one minute then return him to the cage, repeating on successive evenings until he is used to the procedure. Care must be taken not to startle the bird. If he should start to fly about nervously, leave him alone until he settles then gently approach and try and pick him up. Do not attempt to chase him or weeks of confidence will be lost. Both cocks and hens may be taught to speak, so do not stop training if your youngster matures into a hen.

BATHING: Feather disorders can occur through feathers becoming too dry due to lack of an open bath so offer a shallow bath occasionally. Another way of supplying this necessary moisture is to lightly mist or spray the bird in the morning, which then allows plenty of time for him to dry before he roosts in the evening. Some budgies enjoy using a bath, but others not at all.

COVERING UP AT NIGHT: Where the cage is in a room that is adequately heated and the bird settles down naturally, then need to cover-up may not arise. It is advisable to cover up the cage if the room becomes much cooler as the night wears on. This protects the bird from chilling, but once started should be continued or the bird may become stressed if left without its usual protection.

HEALTH: Properly cared for, your pet will live a long and happy life, but certain illness can strike, the most common being diarrhoea and wheezing. If your pet appears to be listless, with feathers fluffed up, and apparently wheezing, keep him warm. Diarrhoea can be the result of excess feeding of “green food”, mouldy seed, or food that may have been contaminated by rodents or insects. Speak to your Just For Pets stores or your local vet if problem persists.

Your Just For Pets shop can supply medication for worming which should be done every 3 months. Parasitic mites can be another problem that may arise. These mites feed on the blood of your budgie and can be seen on perches where they rest during the day and appear as a small red blob. They are easily treated with a spray that can be obtained from your Just For Pets store.

Always remember that delay in accurate treatment can kill your bird, so if in doubt, talk to the pet store or your local vet.

THE ANATOMY OF THE WHISKERA common mistake people make is assuming that cat whiskers and human hair are alike. The whiskers, unlike human hair, are actually touch receptors. These longer, stiffer hairs -- also called vibrissae -- are embedded more deeply in the cat’s body than the shorter top-fur coat. The vibrissae are connected securely to the sensitive muscular and nervous systems, sending information about the surroundings directly to the cat’s sensory nerves, giving it a heightened sense of feeling and helping the cat to detect and respond to changes in its surroundings - sort of like kitty radar.

A cat’s tactile hairs may be the most prominent on either side of its nose and upper facial lip. You may be also able to see shorter whiskers above each of the eyes (kind of like eyebrows). But did you know that cats also have whiskers on their jaw line and on the back of their front legs?

THOU SHALL NOT CUT YOUR CAT’S WHISKERS!Another common mistake is presuming that cat whiskers should be trimmed. Some cats, like the Devon Rex, even have curly facial whiskers, so you might think that it wouldn’t be harmful to straighten them out with a little trim. You’d be wrong!

WHY CATS HAVE WHISKERSCats possess many physiological attributes that give them their astounding athletic abilities; one of the most prominent features all cats share that enables this are whiskers.

But why exactly do cats have whiskers?

Page 13: FREE Spring - Pet Shop Coffs harbour, Brontosaurus Pet ...€¦ · ownership of your pet (and yes it does happen). Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet

13

Grooming, trimming or cutting off a cat’s whiskers is a big no-no. Without their tactile hairs, cats become very disoriented and frightened. In short, whiskers enable cats to gauge and make sense of their environment. Whiskers do grow back, but cats need their whiskers to remain intact in the same way you and I need our touch senses to get around. That is, cats use their whiskers in the same way that we use the touch receptors in our finger tips to feel our way around in the darkness, and to alert us to potentially painful situations.

Cat whiskers shed and grow back naturally, and should be left alone.

FEELING THEIR WAY AROUND – EVEN IN THE DARKCats have a sensory organ at the end of their whiskers called a proprioceptor, which sends tactile signals to the brain and nervous system. The proprioceptor is related to the position of the body and limbs, an important part of knowing where every part of the body is so that decisions can be made for the next immediate movement. This organ makes the cat’s whiskers very sensitive to even the smallest change in the cat’s environment. A cat’s whiskers not only help it to gauge whether it can fit into a tight space (without even being able to see it), they can even respond to vibrations in the air, such as when the cat is chasing prey.

Whiskers also serve as a way for cats to visually measure distance, which is why they are able to leap so quickly and gracefully onto a narrow ledge or out of harm’s way.

GETTING IN THE MOODWhiskers serve another purpose besides acting as guidance, tracking, and radar systems – they also serve as a kind of barometer for the cat’s moods. When a cat is resting or content, its whiskers will be mostly immobile. But if you see the whiskers suddenly bunch up and lay flat against the cat’s face -- that may be a sign that the cat is scared.

Perhaps when playing “chase the toy” with a cat, you’ll notice its whiskers are pointing forward. This is probably its “game face,” a sign that your cat is in hunting mode.

The whiskers also make it pretty easy to tell when a cat is startled or excited, because every hair on its body will be standing on end, including the whiskers, which will point almost completely forward.

Whiskers are a vital part of a cat’s mobility and sense of security. Without whiskers, cats would not be able to achieve the great acrobatic feats that are so awe-inspiring, or protect themselves from dangerous situations.

Page 14: FREE Spring - Pet Shop Coffs harbour, Brontosaurus Pet ...€¦ · ownership of your pet (and yes it does happen). Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet

Just as we need to up our intake of water in the heat, so do our pets; investing in an extra water bowl, such as a travel one, is ideal for taking on walks and trips or think about a more advanced solution such as a pet fountain.

Ever wonder why your cat likes to drink from dripping taps? That’s because cats trust moving water. They know it provides a fresher, cleaner water source.

Pet fountains constantly circulate and filter the water, so it stays cleaner and tastes fresher to give cats the water they

seek. Increasing your cat’s water intake helps promote proper kidney function and urinary tract health.

Water is essential to your dog’s overall health and well-being. On average, dogs need 70 ml of water per kilogram of body weight every day. Water cushions joints and supports vital organ function.

Pet fountains provide a clean supply of fresh, great-tasting water, giving dogs a reason to drink more to stay hydrated and healthy.

Your dog and or cat should have a source of constant fresh water available to them all year round, but it’s even more vital during summer to help prevent them suffering from dehydration.

They tell us a lot by their actions, their physiological responses, and sometimes by the “evidence” they’ve left while you’ve been at work. One of my current dogs, a rescue, shows aggressive behaviour towards the other dogs in our home, because she feels threatened and uncertain of her own safety. She also gets car sick and vomits all over the back seat on any journey longer than 30 minutes.

A friend’s cat starts bouncing off the walls when he’s frightened by loud noises, like fireworks or thunder.

Some pets can wreck furniture, scratch up the place or relieve themselves when experiencing extreme anxiety. Panting, shaking, drooling, whining and fretting are all indicators.

HomeoPet has a range of formulas to help combat anxiety in specific stressful situations, and for general anxiety based conditions. Designed by Vets, each product has a

broad-spectrum formula that alleviates the many underlying contributors.

STORM STRESS is the HomeoPet product designed specifically for loud noises, changes in barometric pressure, and the wild lightning, thunder, wind and rain of storms. This formula helps promote a sense of calm quickly and effectively, when given four times an hour until the pet’s behaviour changes.

TRAVEL ANXIETY is the HomeoPet answer to motion sickness, drooling, vomiting, panting, restlessness and other unwanted behaviour during any sort of travel, including car trips and at holiday time. Fast-acting and effective, its’ best to start dosing your pet an hour before the trip.

Our pet’s behaviour is the best indicator that they are suffering from anxiety or stress.

ANXIETY is for general anxious conditions. This formulation is designed to help with separation anxiety, fear of vet visits or groomer, introduction of new pets or people, and to help rescued or rehomed pets, and other broad based symptoms of anxiety.

HomeoPet founder and Vet Dr Tom Farrington MVB MRCVS VetMFHom designed each product to be chosen simply and quickly by customers to match the name to the conditions shown by your pet. All HomeoPet products are non-sedating and non-habit forming. There are no side effects and can be used in combination with each other, or any pharmaceutical or natural supplement with safety. HomeoPet’s behavioural range has been clinically trialed worldwide and in Australia by leading Behaviorists, Vets and Universities with a 78% efficacy rating which is extremely high.

The holidays are a festive time for us and our pets. With so much happening in the home at this time of year it is easy to overlook potential pet hazards that could hurt our four-legged friends. We will cover the top items which pose a risk to your pet, and help you protect your furry family member this holiday season.

Holiday Lighting and Candles – keep candles in out of reach spots so your pet can not access them to burn themselves or accidently knock them over. If your pet likes to chew, be sure to check your lights for signs of fraying, and use a grounded extension cord as a safety precaution.

Ornaments, Ribbon & Tinsel –Your pet can choke on decorations, which could end fatally, it is very important to keep ALL decorations out of reach. Decorations are not snacks… but your pet does not realise that. Tinsel is very attractive to your cat in particular, it is shiny, moves, it’s dangly and it looks

THE HOLIDAYS ARE A FESTIVE TIME FOR US AND OUR PETS

FOODYour Christmas lunch is not your pet’s lunch. Items that look harmless on our plate is not so innocent in our pets bowl. No cooked bones, fat trimmings chocolate, nuts or onions! Although it might seem natural to give a dog a bone, it is very dangerous, as it can be a choking hazard, and even splinter and cause an obstruction or laceration in your dog’s digestive system. Don’t let your pet indulge, stick to their regular routine. Your pet does need to over eat or have extra treats just because it is Christmas.

Speak to your Just For Pets store to help select a gourmet Christmas lunch for your fur child and remember we stock a huge range of Christmas treats too, all safe for your pet!

TOXIC PLANTSLilies, poinsettia, aloe vera, pine tree needles, mistletoe are innocuous in appearance, yet dangerously poisonous to our pets. These plants are liable to cause mouth irritation, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, trembling, depression, difficulty breathing, collapse, hallucinations and possibly death when ingested.

FALLING TREESTimberrrr! Secure your tree in your home to avoid trees falling down. Cats love to climb up through the branches and dogs love to wag their powerful tails and run around below, leading to quite a Christmas hazard!

somewhat alive to our watchful pets. The issue with tinsel is once your pet consumes it, it twists inside the intestines, requiring immediate specialist veterinary care. Place those which are delicate or treasured ornaments, the tempting play things that they are, especially high in the tree and secure them tightly, better yet choose ornaments which do not shatter. Avoid creating fashions on your pet with decorations, or ribbon on collars that could end up a choking hazard.

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FISHThere are a wide range of hardy freshwater fish that are easy to look after.

If you have decided on a cold water tank, then Goldfish are ideal. Fish such as Comets, fantails and Shubunkins are all suited to these tanks, and very easy to care for.

Tropical species such as Danios, Barbs, Mollies, Guppies and Platys also make good first fish. These fish require warm water all year around, so you will need to purchase a heater when you select your equipment.

To help you choose the right fish, visit www.aquariumindustries.com.au and download the free Care Sheets available.

Also decide on the right location for your tank before you start. Keep your fish tank out of draughts, and away from direct sunlight.

2. SELECT YOUR EQUIPMENTThe choice of equipment depends on the type of fish that you have chosen. Your Just For Pets expert can help you with your selection. A good reference point is that you will require:• Tank (& a stand)• Gravel, and a Gravel Vacuum• Air pump• Filter (if not built in to your tank)• Heater (if you have chosen tropical fish)• Lights if required• Thermometer• Food• Water conditioner• Good water test kits (pH, Ammonia, GH, Nitrites and Nitrates)• A net• You may also want some plants—and your child will have fun

selecting some ornaments too

HOW TO SET UP A CHILD’S FIRST TANK

Live fish make a great first pet! They are easy to care for, quiet, and fun to watch. They don’t have to be a lot of work for Mum and Dad either. Follow these 6 simple steps, and the entire family will get hours of pleasure from your new pets.

3. CYCLE YOUR TANKOnce you have assembled your tank, and filled it with water, you will need to exercise some patience! New tanks need to run for a while before you can start to add some fish. This allows “good” bacteria to get started in your tank, making a healthy environment for the fish when they are introduced.

Operating a filled tank with no fish in it is called “cycling” your tank. Ideally, you will need to cycle your tank for at least 1 week before adding any fish. After the first week, take a sample of your water back to your Just For Pets store, and have them test it for you. If conditions are right, you can start to add fish!

Add a small number of fish to your tank at first, and only feed them every second day for a while. Add more fish slowly over the next 4—5 weeks.

4. UNPACKING AND RELEASING YOUR FISHBefore you bring your fish home, do one final test of the water to ensure that it is suitable for your new pets.

Bring your fish straight home from the pet store. Don’t leave them in the car for long, especially on a hot day.

Once home, assemble your net and a bucket, before opening the fish bag. While you are

assembling your equipment, float the unopened bag for 2—5 minutes (not longer) in your tank to equalize the temperatures.

Cut the bag open, and pour the contents of the bag through the net into the bucket. Do not put the water from the bag into your tank!

Carefully release the fish from the net into your tank, and discard the waste water appropriately.

5. EASY WEEKLY AND MONTHLY MAINTENANCEYou can care for your fish in just a few minutes every week, by following a few easy steps on a regular basis.

Like any other living creature (including us!) fish like to be in the right environment. If their environment becomes unsuitable, then they may become stressed or sick. So a small amount of preventative maintenance on a regular basis, will result in a happy tank and even happier fish.

Once a month:Perform a 25% water change. Don’t forget to add Water Conditioner when you top the water up again.

Test the GH (General Hardness) of the water. Add Conditioning Salts if necessary. (This is not normal salt, rock salt or pool salt. You will be able to buy proper Aquarium Salts from your Just For Pets store)

Once every two weeks:

Test pH, Test Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates if you want to be extra sure of tank health.

Once a week:

Remove any algae from the tanks

Use your Gravel Vacuum to remove any waste materials from the bottom of the tank.

6. EASY DAILY TASKSYour child will have so much fun feeding their pets every day. Be sure to supervise smaller children to ensure they don’t overfeed their new friends (overfeeding pollutes the water and is potentially harmful.) While feeding, you can also perform a few quick visual checks to make sure that everything in your tank is working correctly.

Feed 2 or 3 small feeds a day. Feed no more than your fish can eat in 5 minutes, and quickly remove any uneaten food. Feed a variety of foods to ensure good health, including Frozen Food as the occasional treat.

Visually check that your filters, airstones, lights etc are working.

Check water temperature, and ensure that your heater is functioning.

If one of your fish has died, remove it immediately. Help care for our environment, and dispose of dead fish appropriately. Do not dump them into the sewerage or stormwater.

1. EXERCISEDogs will keep playing as long as their owners keep throwing the ball. Ensure exercise and play time is done in parks offering shade or resort to early morning or late afternoon sessions which are best because it is cooler and keep dogs out of direct sunlight in the heat of the day. Lower the intensity or swap a walk for a swim to keep the dogs exercised but cool. We also recommend carrying a portable water bowl at all times to ensure easy access to water.

2. HEAT STRESSHeat stress is a regular occurrence in dogs during summer and is caused by over exercise, dehydration and more prominent in dogs that are overweight. Signs of heat stress include weakness, excessive panting, snorting, drooling and increased heart rates – if you notice your dog acting like this immediately seek shade, cold water and wet the pads of their paws, apply cool wet towels to the belly.

26

PROTECT YOUR DOG THIS SUMMERPetway Petcare’s top 4 tips for protecting your fur babies in the summer months.

3. GROOMINGWhen we get hot we can take off a layer of clothing but our dogs don’t have this luxury. We recommend shorter coats to help keep the dog cool and regular brushing to remove excess undercoat from long coated and double coated breeds. Washing of

dogs should become more regular in summer to keep dogs fresh, clean and comfortable and also protect them from fleas, ticks and lice.

Always choose a shampoo that is soap free and pH balanced for your animal’s sensitive skin and don’t contain parabens or phosphates. Human shampoo products are not suitable for dogs. Looking

for products that are made with naturally based ingredients and made in Australia will also ensure a high quality product.

Petway Petcare tick all these boxes.

Page 27: FREE Spring - Pet Shop Coffs harbour, Brontosaurus Pet ...€¦ · ownership of your pet (and yes it does happen). Microchipping is a permanent form of identification for your pet

27

Understanding your dog’s skin type is very important when deciding on a shampoo. For normal skin types an everyday shampoo and conditioner will be fine. We suggest Petway Petcare Everyday Pink Shampoo and Conditioner with a long lasting fragrance or Petway Petcare Aroma Care Shampoo for people who like pure steam distilled essential oils of lavender and chamomile.

If your dog suffers from irritated or sensitive skin, always look for products that are specially made for sensitive skin, are hypo-allergenic, tearless and low allergen. We suggest Petway Petcare Gentle Protein Shampoo and Conditioner or Petway Petcare Tearless Puppy Shampoo. For dogs with dry, scaly and very irritated skin we highly recommend Petway Petcare Skin Care Shampoo containing Pine Tar, Neem Oil, Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil and Vitamin E.

Don’t forget to use a Conditioner to soften and revitalise the coat and add moisture to the skin. After bathing or between washes we suggest a Cologne Coat Gloss to add shine and lustre to the coat and a fresh fragrance. Choose from Coconut, Baby Powder, Floral Musk and many more.

4. FLEAS AND TICKSFlea and Ticks are a common problem we have to deal with any time of the year but summer is certainly the season that we need to ensure we use more preventative measures

to make sure our furry friends are either not affected or treated immediately to ensure they are not uncomfortable for long periods.

Be more aware of your dog’s behaviour and continually check the coat for any problem areas. If an animal appears to be scratching or biting at one particular area on their coat there are a few reasons why. Firstly it could be a tick, if so this should be removed

immediately and treated by a veterinarian if thought to be a paralysis tick. Symptoms of paralysis tick include wobbly hind legs, unsteady on feet, change in bark, loss of appetite,

excess saliva, coughing, vomiting, dry retching, lying on side with laboured breathing.

Another reason is fleas. As fleas can be hard to detect, irritated areas could be caused from a dog chewing and scratching an area due to flea bites. This can lead to bleeding and infection and again Veterinary

treatment required. A visit to the Vet should be the last thing on any animal owners mind when prevention is simple. Look out for the Cotex range of APVMA Registered Flea & Tick Kill products.
