One of a Kind Put-in-Bay is a one-of-a-kind, iconic place to visit, always fun and always different. A year-round community and summer resort, Put-in-Bay is located on an Ohio island in the western basin of Lake Erie. Put-in-Bay and the Bass Islands have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors since the 1860s when Jose DeRivera firmly established our island business of grape growing and wine making. People have been boarding boats to visit us ever since, and entertaining guests is what we enjoy doing most.
Most visitors and even islanders refer to South Bass Island today simply as Put-in-Bay. We’re part of a cluster of 14 islands grouped together in Lake Erie’s western basin broadly known as the Lake Erie Islands. Three of the islands, which the British named the Bass Islands, are part of that cluster. The fun starts with your ferry ride.
An Eclectic MixOnce here, the Village of Put-in-Bay is just a short distance from the main port of entry docks. The Village of Put-in-Bay has an eclectic mix of Victorian, early industrial, mid-century modern, and nautically themed buildings downtown filled with shops, taverns, sports bars, and restaurants.
We’re certain that Commodore Oliver H. Perry would have never imagined what his historic naval victory off the shores of our island in the War of 1812 would have led to Put-in-Bay being such a great place to vacation. Perry’s ship, the beautiful Brig Niagara which sails out of Erie PA, calls Put-in-Bay its second home.
While you’re here you must visit Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial. It is THE iconic symbol of Put-in-Bay. Recognizable in ads and publications used nationwide to promote the Lake Erie Islands. Our National Park Service manages this historic site, which continues to commemorate 200+ years of peace between USA, Great Britain and Canada. Everyone who comes to the island should plan time to see the 352-foot tall monument.
Top 5 DestinationsSince the early days of steamship travel, our beautiful island has remained a top Lake Erie destination. Put-in-Bay is a welcoming place that is one of the most visited vacation spots on the Great Lakes and is consistently listed as one of the regions top 5 summer destinations by TripAdvisor and Yelp!
Looking for AdventureIf you are looking for adventure, we’re the place where you can book a charter boat to fish, go parasailing, jet skiing, paddleboarding, or kayaking! We have an amazing selection of great attractions like golf, mini golf, wineries, and caves to explore. We have family friendly

Golf Carts/BikesOnce you get to Put-in-Bay you’ll see folks on golf carts cruising the island. The laughter and good times go by our door all season long. Golf carts have become the most popular mode of island transportation. There’s something about the slow pace and wind in your face that brings out the inner child. We love the joy that this represents for visitors looking to create great memories while here seeing the island.
The carts come in 2,4,6, even 8 passenger versions so your entire family can share in the experience too. Some can even be rented overnight. Check on the weather before you come, you may want to ask for one with a windshield and wiper. Planning ahead is important. Saturdays can be extremely busy. Luckily, some of our cart rental companies will allow you to reserve ahead online, but be sure to inquire about their cancellation policies.
Have a great time exploring the island. You will need to be a licensed automobile driver and while it may seem tempting to let your children drive, it is not legal. Please respect our neighbors, don’t litter or damage public or private property. These carts are lots of fun, but they are for street use only. Please follow all the same road rules here that you do on the mainland while driving your car.
Golf carts are a great way to see the island up close, but they are not your only choice. Once you have arrived at your island destination, you’ll quickly realize that biking and walking are very convenient as well. The island is only 3.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide at the widest point. With just two small hills, walking, using bikes or golf carts are great ways to see it all. Island Bike Rental, E’s Golf Carts, Erie Island Carts, Boathouse Cart Rental, Delaware Bike and Cart Rental, Wharfside, Axel’s Café, and the Park Hotel, all rent golf carts and bikes.
Of course you can always bring your car. Just make sure that you tell your island hosts that you need a spot to park. Many of our island lodging partners have bikes and golf carts available to rent so check with them too before reserving. Downtown Put-in-Bay, especially around DeRivera Park is primarily set up for golf cart parking, so you’ll want to leave the car parked and cart, walk or bike to your favorite spot downtown.
Put-in-Bay AirportThe Put-in-Bay Township Port Authority operates a year-round airport on South Bass Island. The island is serviced by airlines from the Erie/Ottawa Regional Airport in Port Clinton and Put-in-Bay. Landing and departure from dusk to dawn is prohibited at the air field because the runway is not illuminated. A paved parking area is available for pilots and there is a parking fee. 419-285-8042.
Watercraft RentalsHere on South Bass Island Put-in-Bay Watercraft Rentals rents jet skis, kayaks, and powerboats. Miyo’s has Jet Skis and Bay Paddleboarding rents paddleboards only. There are no sailboat rentals on the island.

No history buff’s trip to the island would be complete without touring our Lake Erie Islands Historical Society museum and resale shop. The LEIHS Museum has great exhibits on island commerce, maritime history and the legacy of the Victorian era including hotels, taverns and entertainment venues, some still in operation today. And if you’re looking for that random historical treasure, check out LEIHS’ amazing Resale Shop.
Island (S)Hopping It’s fun like island hopping, but so much easier to do. Get your bags ready and start your fun on Delaware Ave. The Carriage House is a great place to begin. You’ll find the perfect “Put-in-Bay” gift for yourself or your dog-sitter here. Carriage House carries over 100 different styles of PIB t-shirts from sizes infant to 5XL.
Once you’ve got the “thank you gifts list” done, head on down the “AVE” to Bayview Gifts, then on to Misty Bay Boutique, Put-in-Bay T-Shirt Shop, and Mariner’s Locker. These wonderful stores carry brands like Columbia, Sperry, and North Face. Swimsuits, shoes, and apparel for ladies of leisure, crew or that special “Captain” of your boat.
Probably the most important fashion stop on your shopping trip here in Put-in-Bay is at Sun Stoppers (the sunglass ladies). They have the high-end sunglass brands like Maui Jim and OAKLEY for you, as well as budget-friendly designs for the entire family.
Because the weather is always sunny in Put-in-Bay, you may have “forgotten” your summer fashion wear, or perhaps you blew out a flip-flop or stepped on a pop-top. “Shoot the curl” at the Put-in-Bay Surf Shop. They have swimsuits, surf wear, and some really cool sandals and summer shoes.
If you’re looking for a very special gift, head over to the Lobster Trap at the Boardwalk. They feature chic apparel and nautical home gifts from Mariposa. If you’re on a golf cart you should also check out the amazing gift shop at Stonehenge Estate too. They feature unique period and wine-related gifts.
Our Lake Erie Islands Historical Society has a “pickers” dream Resale Shop. This is the place for those with an eye for local history treasures, or maybe just a great deal on a table and set of chairs.
Don’t Give Up (the shopping) Trip, yet! You have to go to the Country House. Not only do they feature custom art prints by local photographer Roman Sapeki, but they have the best “Don’t Give Up the Ship” selection on the island, from shirts to Tervis tumblers.
Lots of folks like to collect cool destination tee shirts. You can pick up your “island” tee shirt for your next vacation from The Bucket Shop at the Round House, or inside at the Frosty Bar.
If you’re shopping with kids in tow, and they have lasted this long, tell them you’ll take them to the Sticker Shack and Local Color, down at The Keys. There, they can find some awesome PIB and Great Lakes themed stickers while you try on some nice boat wear at Local Color.
Your To-Do List (Finding Attractions)Whether you’re bringing your entire extended family or just coming over for a weekend getaway for two, Put-in-Bay has so much more than just places to eat and sip a cool drink… What’s on your “to-do list”?
Are you a history detective? If you love history Put-in-Bay is a great place to spend hours, even days indulging your quest for knowledge. Learn about the important role the islands played in our nation’s history, from burial mounds to classic sports car road racing, tall ships to vineyard estates, you’ll find it here.
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial visitor center is a great place to start your island journey. Enjoy a movie about the 1813 Battle of Lake Erie and immerse yourself in a beautiful photo exhibit about the construction of the monument from 1912-15 by local island photographer Otto Herbster.
Very few realize that the prosperity of the islands, the reason why we are here, was built on the shoulders of grape growing and wine making vineyard owners. You’ll have to see Stonehenge, the last remaining Vineyard Estate built during the heydays of winemaking on the Bass Islands. And then head to Heineman’s Winery, the oldest remaining family owned winery in the state of Ohio. Explore the history of winemaking, watch how it’s made today and then savor a glass of island wine. Complete your winemaking journey at the Put-in-Bay Winery on the Doller Estate. Tour the Doller House and Island Life Museum. It’s a rare glimpse into life here in the 1800s. Finally, enjoy a gorgeous waterfront view while sampling their wines.
If maritime history draws you in or you’re a lighthouse lover, you have got to check out the South Bass Island Lighthouse, now owned by The Ohio State University. During the summer on Mondays and Tuesdays you can take a tour of the lighthouse, but the grounds are always open. When you’re in Put-in-Bay this summer, Wednesday through Saturday visit the OSU Aquatic Visitors Center, kids under 16 fish for free! On Wednesdays OSU offers a Gibraltar Island (& Cooke’s Castle) tour leaving from The Boardwalk at 10:45 a.m. ($16pp).

Want to treat yourself to something just for you? Check out Freshwater Sensations, across from the airport. They sell spa gifts, massages, and essential oils. They also sell locally-made jewelry and Birkenstock sandals.
If fishing or boating is what brought you to the islands, you can get fishing tackle, licenses and other boating “essentials” at The Wharfside, and you can shop there while enjoying a cold beer and a sandwich.
At the end of your “island (S)hopping” trip is a sweet treat waiting at the Candy Bar. Enjoy hand-dipped chocolates, fudge, and ice cream. It’s kid-friendly and features lots of unusual novelty candy. It’s a great way to finish a good say of shopping.
Family Friendly FunWe love when history and entertainment cross paths. Kids of all ages can take a ride on Kimberly’s Carousel, built in 1914 in Towanda, New York and still giving rides daily. This is one of the country’s oldest original wooden carousels. You can even get a day pass for the kids! It’s on Delaware Ave., downtown Put-in-Bay.
Parents all have the same mission when on vacation, keeping your kids busy and engaged. A hands-on experience that lots of kids will enjoy is the Lake Erie Islands Nature and Wildlife Center. Snakes and birds and trails oh my….will keep your nature lover happy for hours. Check out their Wild Tuesdays for special “hands-on” experiences all summer long.
For the spelunkers in your family, Put-in-Bay has over 25 caves, two of which are open for tours daily. Crystal Cave, at the Heineman Winery, is the world’s largest Celestite geode. The cave tour is part of the Winery tour. You’ll marvel at the beauty of the crystals and the story of their discovery.
Then across the street is Perry’s Cave. Head down fifty feet underground to see stalagtites and stalagmites and enjoy cool 55-degree temperatures all season long. Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center is part of a total family fun experience that includes the Butterfly House, War of 18 Holes putt-putt golf, Gemstone Mining, Fort aMaze’n, a rock wall, and antique car museum. For hours of family entertainment, buy a combo ticket as part of your ferry’s ticket package and save some bucks, too.

During the week both Adventure Bay and the Put-in-Bay Resort pools are open to the entire family (adults only with a live DJ on the weekends).
And away from all the hub-bub of downtown is the Crew’s Nest. They just renovated their outdoor pool areas, and have three pools: adult-only, full size, and a kid’s pool. The Crew’s Nest, which is a private club, allows for pool day membership passes during the week. Call them for hours and the day pass price.
OutdoorsyA lot of our outdoor friends that visit like to paddle their kayaks before breakfast, ride their bikes around the island ‘til lunch, then go jump waves on a jet ski before dinner! Then just for fun the next day they play in a 6x6 soccer tournament. If this sounds like somebody you know, do we have the perfect outdoor island destination for you.
It’s a beautiful day, so start out at Put-in-Bay Parasailing. It’s like parachuting, only in slow motion. You can see the island from the sky while being pulled along by a speedboat. Get wet if you want, or not. Or check out the island from above with Paratus Air. Helicopter tours of the islands and surrounding areas depart from the Put-in-Bay airport. What a view!
Then head over to the Miyo’s Jet Ski Rental next to the Bayshore Resort (close to downtown). Once you have passed the operator’s overview quiz, saddle up because it’s time to get wet. No red-blooded adventure type can pass up this wet fun.
Bay Paddleboarding rental is also right downtown. Grab a paddle, board, lifejacket and venture across the inner harbor. The view from our harbor of the shoreline and Gibraltar Island is incredible and the water there is always just a bit warmer than the lake, too.
If you want it all, just head west to the Put-in-Bay Watercraft rental at the South Bass Island State Park. Located on a pebble beach with a great lawn for beach towel sun tanners, there’s also a lake swimming area there. They rent powerboats, jet skis, kayaks, and paddle boards.
After your morning of adventure perhaps you’re looking for a par three afternoon. Time to check out Saunders Golf Course. I know little about golf, but I did learn to drive golf carts while visiting Put-in-Bay. Golf looks like fun, especially while watching from the porch at Joe’s Bar after nine holes!
Fish or cut bait, if you’re looking to bring dinner home with you, you will need to spend some quality time fishing. Captain Bruce’s Put-in-Bay Fishing Charter, oldest fishing charter on the island with over 35 years of experience, knows where to find them. He provides the bait, the boat, and the equipment. All you need to do is show up ready!
If you’re coming to Put-in-Bay, be sure to bring your swimsuit, we have two great bathing beaches. You may go home wet, but you’ll be happy you came.

Fresh-caught Lake Erie perch and walleye are available as sandwiches or baskets. Burger connoisseurs should try their Land & Lake burger- a 1/2 lb. burger topped with perch!
Located just a block away from the hustle and bustle of the village downtown in the western harbor is the beautiful historic club known as The Crew’s Nest. The Crew’s Nest is a private club with pools, tennis and great food, but we’ll share this secret with you: Sunday through Thursdays visitors can purchase a one day membership and enjoy their relaxing atmosphere, casual elegant dining overlooking their private docks. On the edge of downtown, The Reel Bar’s raised deck provides a wonderful view of the action on Catawba Ave and is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon sipping a draft beer and savoring their awesome Reel Burger.
Some of the other cool outdoor spots are located a short walk out of town. Local’s favorite, The Goat Soup & Whiskey, is the home of the Original Perch Taco (you’ll soon be hooked- pun intended) with both indoor dining and covered patio. The chefs grow fresh ingredients in their on-premise gardens, but the bartenders benefit as well! Hint: the Basil Mojito should not be missed! Beer lovers unite at the authentic “bier garten” featuring Austrian Stiegl beer and fresh pretzels.
“If you’re not going out”, check out Joe’s Bar (You’ve Found It!) for a Bloody Mary, classic burger, or better yet a Sloppy Scotty chili dog and some loaded “NotJoes”. Two things you can always find at Joe’s, islanders and a fabulous cigar menu. Pick up a cold beer and a stogie, and enjoy their patio with the locals.
If your adventure on Put-in-Bay takes you to the South Bass Island State Park beachfront, stop into Axel’s Waterfront Cafe to satisfy that snack attack. Axel’s family friendly, budget minded menu with picnic style dining is a great place to get away from it all. There is no better view of the sunset while enjoying your burger and fries on the island. Period!
A Crafty CollectionPut-in-Bay Brewery & Distillery is THE only place on the island handcrafting local brews and spirits. Enjoy island-themed brews such as West Shore IPA and South Bass Oatmeal Stout alongside their delicious famous Brewery Pizzas and Burgers. Order the perfect pint of Guinness, Harp, Smithwick’s Irish Ale, or local Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold while enjoying Marie’s handcrafted pub grub. This writer’s choice is delicious meatloaf with a hard-boiled egg in the middle, followed closely by the traditional Shepard’s Pie. Sláinte!
The Frosty Bar and Family Pizza is home to the famous Frosty beer mug- a footed mug that’s been frozen and filled with cold beer from one of Frosty’s 28 tap handles. Craft beer on tap, shelled peanuts, cheesy pizza and great subs are an island tradition that shouldn’t be missed!

Looking for Reel special “too soon” drinks, craft beer and gourmet pub food, look no further than Reel Bar on Catawba Ave. Like the weather on Lake Erie the local beers on tap at Reel Bar are always changing. Not looking for draft beer? Whether you are looking for a staple bourbon or something special, you will find it here with the islands largest bourbon selection. Don’t miss their street tacos, fresh salads and hand cut fries served with their all-natural burgers and creative “handheld” sandwiches. Go in any time to check out the “catch of the day” special.
Put-in-Bay’s only speakeasy, The Red Moon, is the best kept secret on the island. Located adjacent to the Park Hotel, when the red light above the door is lit, locals flock in for the individually handcrafted cocktails such as the Crescent Moon, made with Hendrick’s Gin, elderflower liquor, fresh lime, cucumber, mint, and soda. House-made infused liquors are seasonal and fresh. Martinis, beer cocktails, bellinis, craft beer, and an extensive wine list round out the refreshments served in this unique setting with antique tin ceilings, period wallpaper and recycled table tops. Enjoy a cheese plate on custom-made crescent moon-shaped platter or a soft pretzel. Please don’t tell anyone, shhhh!
MMMM, Bacon!- Breakfast (Lunch, Dinner…) Breakfast at 3 p.m.? Pasquales Cafe serves tourists, cottagers, and locals alike breakfast ALL DAY!!! Their Hot Mess earns its namesake with eggs, bacon, hash browns, and sausage gravy all together in one big bowl of goodness. And those looking for a yummy saltwater treat should try the Lobster Benedict featuring hollandaise! You pick the ingredients and let Gary prepare your perfect omelette. Come back to Pasquales for dinner. They feature American cuisine, pizza, and of course, breakfast all day!
The Frosty Bar has been serving “beer-joint breakfast” since the 1980s. Julie’s famous homemade sausage gravy-covered Country Benedict pairs perfectly with Ohio Magazine’s reader-voted “Best Bloody Mary”. Hangovers welcomed!
The Village Bakery is the island’s only full-service bakery featuring fresh muffins, croissants, and delectable pastries every morning, and delicious deli sandwiches, smoothies and Toft’s Ice Cream in the afternoon. Pauline and Beth have been creating homemade goodness for over 20 years. They specialize in homemade pies and cake and are happy to cater your special event- don’t forget the dessert!
For something special in the morning, sit down to a seasonal latte, enjoy the Jackie O breakfast crepe, and a champagne cocktail at the Old Forge Creperie. Visit Mark, Mike, and Gina where they do coffee and crepes “to perfection.” Your day on the island will be off to a great start!
Setup your day for Reel success with breakfast at Reel Bar on Catawba Ave. Enjoy breakfast burritos, corned beef hash and “cakes on the lake” with a fresh squeezed mimosa while watching the morning go by on their front patio. Reel great breakfast served daily.!
A little slow out of the rack? A great choice is Mossbacks where breakfast starts at 9 a.m. and includes the “Commodore’s Favorite”, a buttermilk biscuit topped with cheesy hash brown casserole, scrambled eggs, sausage gravy and BACON! until 1 p.m.
Grab and go or hang out at one on their two porches and enjoy Topsy Turvey’s bagel sandwiches and the famous Breakfast Cuban, while enjoying a lovely view of the harbor. An excellent way start your day at the Bay. Don’t forget to grab a latte from their amazing coffee bar out front!
And Late Night Goodness, tooSo, maybe Late Night Eats are more your style? We’ve got that covered too. On the way home stop at the Reel Bar for a custom “Late Night” Burrito. Or head across the street to Put-in-Bay Cameo Pizza the ONLY option for pizza, subs, wings, and salad delivery on the island. You can’t miss that Cameo Smart Car zipping around the island until 3 a.m. Chicken Ranch pizza after a night out on the island, Yes, Please! So if you’re out on the town heading down Catawba Ave make one of these great late night “ready to go food” hangouts you last stop on the way home.
Serious fun during your visit here may require a piece of Put-in-Bay Brewing Company’s signature “Firehouse Pizza” and something to wash it down. If that sounds good, head to Put-in-Bay Brewing Company for a late night slice and a microbrew “pairing”. Bring your friends and try one of their great pizzas. The Brewery is open until 2:30 a.m., serving the late-night crowd.
Located right in the middle of it all on Delaware Ave, Mama Maria’s Pizza serves hot pies by the slice into the wee hours. Nothing quite hits the spot after a late night like one of Mama Maria’s homemade meatball sandwiches or a slice of gooey cheese pizza. Luckily, Mama Maria knows we crave her cooking at all hours of the day and night and her patio makes for a great place to take in the view of the harbor and downtown any time.

You Scream, I Scream, We all Scream for Ice Cream…Delicious fudge and homemade chocolates aren’t the only thing on “tap” at the Sweetest Bar on PIB. Take in Sundae Funday (or Monday, Tuesday,…) at The Candy Bar serving locally made Toft’s ice cream with favorite flavors like Superman and Buckeye Bites. Amanda dips her cake cones in chocolate and rolls them in sprinkles for the serious sweet tooth!
For those who prefer soft serve ice cream, the Dairy Isle’s homemade waffle cones dipped in chocolate or cherry are just the ticket. Belgian waffle sundaes, Storm Flurrys, and Slushys round out their dessert treat menu. May we suggest their basic chocolate vanilla twist cone, rolled in sprinkles for added fun.
I’m with the BandLive Music is what makes Put-in-Bay summers special. Bands from all over the country flock to the music scene here on the island for the chance to play for our island guests. There’s something for just about everyone. Check out venues like the Reel Bar, where island favorites like The Ray Fogg Show play every weekend in season and the Round House Bar that has been rocking the downtown Put-in-Bay music scene for decades with must see acts like Mike “Mad Dog” Adams and Bob Gatewood with the Calabash Band.
You’ll find that many visiting funk, country, folk, and rock bands perform at great music listening spaces like The Boathouse, and Hooligans. And then there’s the island’s disc jockeys that create a fabric of summer sound that echoes all along the avenue. We know they will get you dancing. There are several Island venues whose entertainment includes regular barroom singers or duos that you will want to check out including Mojito Bay, Blu Luna, Frosty Bar, Sand Bar, Topsy Turvey, Old Forge Cafe, The Keys, Fish Bowl and The Crew’s Nest.
So be sure to check the Put-in-Bay Gazette, the music venue websites, and the visitputinbay app for entertainment schedules to catch your favorite group’s performance. Put-in-Bay is the place to enjoy some live music daily, so get out and dance…or at least do the head bob!

NEW for 2017!
Same Owners, Enhanced Experience
Island Lodging - A Great Place to StayWhen you come to Put-in-Bay we encourage you to stay overnight, and with a little pre-planning you’ll enjoy a perfect island getaway. We have many wonderful places to stay including condos, villas, hotels, inns, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, cottages, and even private homes. We have divided up our lodging listings into four types of accommodations:
Hotels/Resorts/Villas- These usually include individual rooms with private baths and on-site amenities such as food and beverage, pool, and conference space.
Inns & Guesthouses- Typically owned and operated by an island family, usually have more rooms than a B&B, but a very similar friendly setting and may not serve breakfast. Rooms range from beautiful 2 person occupancy rooms with private baths to larger guest rooms for groups. Some can accommodate up to 30 people.
B&B- You’ll be staying with the locals typically in a more quiet, gracious, and charming atmosphere. Most offer rooms with private or semi private baths and a hot breakfast.
Cottages/Private Homes/Condos- Perfect for extended stays or larger groups for family reunions, girls’ weekend. Guests enjoy private homes, condos and cottages that typically include kitchen and perhaps some outdoor space, the perfect home away from home.
Unlike lodging on the mainland, last minute rentals here on the island may be very hard to come by, especially on weekends. Many of our lodging partners require a two-night minimum, so we recommend you book a place to stay before you get here. Here’s some of our featured lodging partners listings:
