Hosting 2015 Scarf Exchange YEAR OF THE SHEEP/GOAT (and FRIENDS)

2015 the year of the Sheep/Goat is an excellent period for all the Chinese zodiac signs. The element for this year is wood and the lucky colour is green. The sheep is the eighth sign in Chinese astrology and number “8” is considered to be a very lucky number. It symbolizes wisdom, fortune & prosperity.

Please join us in the 22nd year of the Scarf Exchange

With the Year of the sheep/goat as the theme.

Send us 150 grams of fibre and the entry form by March 27th 2015, and you will receive a different package of fibre by the end of April 2015. To make the article, the fibre may be spun, felted, woven, knitted, dyed, crocheted and/or a combination of crafts.

The closing date for the return of the article to Western Australia will be the 28th August 2015. Please ensure that you return the article you have crafted to us, and we will return to you your original fibre in the form of Scarf, Shawl, Beanie, Hat & or Bag with the details of the person who made it.

Please forward your fibre and completed entry form to PO Box 446, Inglewood, Western Australia 6932, Australia by 27th March 2015.

There will be an exhibition of the completed articles on 11th, 12th,& 13th September 2015 at Peppermint Grove Library, 1 Leake St (cnr Leake St & Stirling Hwy), Peppermint Grove, WA 6011

You are welcome to come along to view the wonderful creations. Articles will be returned to the original supplier of the fibre after the exhibition.

Be creative, be innovative, and use plenty of flair!~

Fibres should be clean and prepared for crafting. Unsuitable fibres will not be distributed but sent back.

Australia has strict quarantine laws. To enter Australia, raw fibres must be scoured and free of vegetable matter and seeds. The authorities have the right to reject any unsuitable fibre, and such fibre is usually destroyed. Hence it is desirable for each overseas entrant to send his/her 150gram lot individually, as if there is even one seed in the bulk package, the whole lot could be destroyed.

Entry fee: Australia Participants $AUD 18.00 New Zealand Participants $AUD 26.00 USA Participants $AUD 31.00 Other Overseas Participants Enquire

Entry Forms are available from the Guild Office or from http://spinweavewa.org (copy and paste into your browser) look under Contact information and Forms

KUMIHIMO GROUP Kumihimo Braiders meet on the first Thursday of each month from 10am to 1pm. Beginners are welcome. Contact Rosemary Skinner 9341 3037.

SPINNING GROUP Spinners meet at Craft House on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00 am. Beginners are very welcome. Members share their knowledge with each other. Library and Yarn Area are open.

Bring your lunch and your spindle or spinning wheel. The Guild equipment, including carders, drum carder, various spinning wheels, electric wheels and dye equipment, is available for use by members.

IN-HOUSE WEAVERS We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the month, starting at 9:30am.

This year I am going to revert to my old plan of having the complete beginner weavers in the afternoon, 1pm to 4pm. Hopefully that way I can concentrate on them and they won't feel left behind, or a bit lost and confused. It won't be long and they will soon be joining everyone else.

Anyone can stay and weave all afternoon, the more the merrier.

I am planning on having mini demonstrations and theory on different weave structures in the morning, for those who are interested in learning and understanding something new. This may not suit everyone but for those who are beyond complete beginner weaving but still need some direction, it might be helpful.

Depending on interest and how many want to weave a sample, will determine how often there will be a new structure but hopefully every two months will see something new. This will be on a trial basis and if it doesn't work out or no one interested I will rethink the plan ---- well, no harm in trying!

Any suggestions and help most welcome, so please don't hesitate to speak up.

Happy weaving

Sue Greig

Thank you to those who attended the Quilt and Craft Fair on our behalf. There are always new memberships from this event.

I encourage you to look through last years Yarn Spinners and again marvel at the wonderful show and tell articles, well done everyone.

The Project of the Year was a successful and well-run event, with many more quality entries this year. Also the cushion competition saw many innovative and practical articles made for the chairs at APCH. Thank you to all that participated.

Throughout the early part of the year we were encouraging members to enter their work in the Perth Royal Show. Your response was great and most appreciated. Please enter again in 2015 and encourage others to have a go!

The break up party at the end of November was again very enjoyable with wonderful food and companionship. We thank Mrs Reid, our patron, for her visit that day and through out the year. We so enjoy having you with us Mrs. Reid, and we thank your faithful taxi driver!

In my opinion we have had a very successful year promoting and taking part in our crafts, I congratulate everyone. The year ahead will be a very busy and demanding one, I encourage everyone to step up and help toward its success, therefore making it an enjoyable time for us all.

HANDWEAVERS’ SPINNERS’ AND DYERS’ GUILD WA INC. PRESIDENTS REPORT 2014

I begin my report by thanking all members for their participation in what I think was a busy but successful year. Thank you in particular to all committee members for their tireless work and support of myself. I also thank committee members for the extra work taken on during my vacation, toward the end of the year, especially those who took on new positions and those who got the planning going for the Scarf Exchange which we are hosting in 2015.

The interest in our crafts, especially weaving, continued to grow throughout the year with most months recording new memberships. It was great to have a new group join the guild, we wish all members of the Gidgegannup Craft and Spinners a very successful and productive year ahead.

The yarn Spinner continues to be a great publication with so many interesting articles. Thank you to all who contribute to its quality and also to those who make sure it gets to us so regularly on time.

During the year we enjoyed hearing from several interesting speakers on varied subjects. We hope that during this year blinds will be installed at APCH to enable all the other groups and us to view photos and all presentations clearly during daylight hours.

Dyeing workshops were well attended and very successful, thank you to everyone involved.

In April the Balya Tapestry was completed, it was begun in 2010. The finished work is beautiful, a credit to the tapestry group who dedicated their time. Some of us were privilleged to join the celebrations when the tapestry was cut down. We do hope the group will continue and will find enough room in what is now our storeroom!

In January, in just about the hottest day during the summer, a small hard working group emptied our previous store room into the hall, had a grand clear out and by some miracle managed to get what was left into our new store room! Again thank you to all those involved in this enormous task.

We look forward to the improvements planned by APCH for the studio, which we hope, will get under way early in the year.

Some members travelled to Bendigo in July for the show and I understand came back over loaded!

Spinning at Matilda Bay—Saturday 17th January

The day of our annual get-together at Matilda Bay dawned warm and clear. Thanks to early risers Charmaine, Candace and Janet the gazebo was nabbed and ready for Guild occupation by the time the rest of us trickled in.

Despite the warm weather it was cool and comfortable under the trees. As always the table was well furnished with cakes and goodies and when Jo arrived it was covered in a great mound of new fibres. Caroline Oddy added to the mouth-watering array by bringing a van-load of alpaca fleeces; a little patch of heaven had arrived at Matilda Bay!

We were graced by the presence of Mrs Reid who came with Connie and showed great interest (as always) in what we were doing. There were also some Dunsborough spinners who had come a long way to join us.

We were treated with a visit by Hugh Chevis who spoke to us briefly about the early history of wool in England; find out more at the March General Meeting when he has agreed to be our guest speaker!!

It was with reluctance that I wended my way home, as usual with a car load heavier than it was on arrival. Marg PC—Photos by Bev Wallis

YarnSpinner Editor

Once again it is the beginning of a NEW YEAR at the Guild. Many resolutions have been made—and I hope that some of you have decided to assist the Committee at the Guild.

I should like to thank all those who have helped with the creation of the YarnSpinner while I have been Editor. There are those who have regularly contributed articles, like Margaret PC with the Sharing Table reports, the Convenors - Library and Yarn Shop etc. with their reports; and those who have written articles for me to cover events held at or on behalf of the Guild.

Then there is my co-editor, Cecilia, who ably filled in for me whilst I was away on holidays and again when I was ill. She has done a wonderful job and I am sure will continue to do so when our roles are reversed.

My thanks also to Roy and Rosemary Skinner for their assistance with proofreading when I produced the newsletter.

Membership Officer & YarnSpinner Distribution

I should like to thank the ladies at Innaloo Spinners who cheerfully put aside their spinning for an hour when needed to compile the printed newsletter and stuff it in to envelopes for posting. My thanks to all of you.

From the Library

Knitting Traditions This issue takes us to the Orkney Islands and The

Netherlands for their knitted gansey traditions.

There is an essay on Sami (Lapp) knitting as well

as a mitten pattern. We then enter the world of

medieval Islamic knitting and Persian

slippers. The collection of articles on the

American Civil War were especially interesting,

as they brought to mind knitting during World

War 1.

Family Knits in 8 Ply Panda have produced a book of classic family knits,

which include beanies, scarves, vests, jumpers and

cardigans.

There are also felted patterns for a child's vest,

slippers and just to keep things current, an iPod

cover. Anne McAdam

Sharing Table 14th February

It was very obvious that many members made the most of the summer break and busied themselves with some impressive fibre activities.

First up was a great display of tapestry woven, loom woven, felted, embroidered and mixed media postcards made to celebrate Joy Skinner’s 80th birthday. These drew lots of interest. Happy birthday Joy!

Alethea Raspa spun, dyed and knitted a cosy wool/mohair, garter stitch jacket knit from the top down. She had also woven a huck lace sampler and a table mat like the set that she made for her nephew’s wedding gift. Alethea also knitted two pairs of “souvenir socks” (she always ends up knitting socks when away on holiday) using Cat Bordhi’s “Sweet tomato heel” for both pairs.

Anne Gomm, a new spinner from the Gidgegannup Spinning group spun and knitted an exquisite lace scarf (merino); spinning must be in her DNA – perfectly fine and beautifully knitted.

Judy Cattalini is heavily into baby knitting at the moment. A sweet hand knitted baby jumper (which she fears is already too small) in hand-spun coloured merino, a jumper in commercial yarn and a very pretty knitted baby dress in mercerised cotton. Judy also brought along a little pink baby cardi in commercial yarn knitted

by Ivy Walter.

“Prolific Sue” Greig was able to produce two hanks of silk plied with wool, two scarves woven on a knitter’s loom and a knitted scarf (‘waterfall pattern’) in commercial wool dyed with food

Gail Campbell wove two Network Twill Scarves, one with a wool warp and weft and another in cotton. Also a fat hank in silk and wool plied with fine wool. After enjoying TWO holidays, Kjersten still managed

to show us two double weave cowls and a fab scarf using two yarns, only one of which is shrinkable so that when washed in the washing machine (twice) at 60*C it results in a “bubble” effect.

Much interest was generated by Evelyn’s scarf, in plain weave but with very effective red and blue “clasp” warp at the ends.

Anne Williams produced a skein of self-patterning sock yarn; as she puts it, dyed the slow way! She used sun dyes, ikat wraps in two stages, mordanting in alum, and sections dyed with various eucalypts. A stunning result.

Amidst all the mounds of lovely work no-one could miss a stunning lace shawl in hand-spun yak down, knitted by Cecilia from the Miralda pattern found in “Knitted Lace of Estonia”.

Daphne Rowett brought two cushions for the hall knitted with ‘Jean’s wool’, and lucky last, MargaretPC spun up some very rough Shetland wool bought (already carded and dyed) in Scotland last year plied with hand-spun silk cap, and a big pair of stripy socks (lots of practice knitting jogless stripes in the round) and a little pair of baby socks with left over wool from a shawl.

Well done all, writing up the sharing table report

this month has made me a very busy gal!
