JOB SUMMARY:
A 12-month secondment position to act as lead pharmacist for supply service which encompasses the activities provided by the Royal Cornwall Hospital (RCH) dispensary and associated medicine store. To act as the pharmacist responsible for the development by the Royal Cornwall Hospital dispensary and associated medicine store. To act as the pharmacist responsible for the development of one-stop dispensing to RCH wards, to act as directorate pharmacist to the surgical directorate.
As lead pharmacist responsible for the leadership, management and co-ordination of all staff who work in the above sections. The main purpose of the secondment is to integrate one stop dispensing within the supply service and to maximize the operational performance of the supply service.
COMMUNICATIONS AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The role requires regular and direct contact with medical, nursing and managerial staff at all levels of seniority. The nature of the relationship is to provide a high level of professional and operational advice and to formulate policy. Also to communicate directly with patients and relatives and to provide both routine and highly complex information concerning their medicines, specifically:
Internal : Medical, nursing, laboratory, management, pharmacy, IT staff. Direct discussion with patients and relatives to advise them on treatments and medicines.
External: Primary Care Trust (PCT) pharmacy and prescribing leads. Cornwall health community clinical staff, suppliers, professional networking.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To act as the lead pharmacist for the development of one-stop dispensing (dispensing fordischarge) within the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust and advise on developments incommunity hospitals.
2. To work closely with key stakeholders in the planning and implementation of one-stopdispensing.
3. To lead and manage supply services and maintain required operational legal standards.4. To deploy appropriate skill-mix so that the skills of pharmacy assistants and technicians
are used to optimum effect and pharmacist skills are appropriately focussed.5. Responsible for the management of all staff within the supply section.6. To maximise the operational performance of supply services so that ward stock and
prescription medicines are supplied in a timely way.7. To develop a capacity plan for supply service and determine the staff resource needed to
meet that capacity.8. To communicate with key medical and nursing staff to determine that the service is
meeting user needs9. To work closely with PCT prescribing and pharmacy leads to help maximise the seamless
provision of medicines between hospital and home and acute hospital to communityhospital
10. To work closely with the Quality Assurance manager in assessing risks and planningactions to reduce identified risks.
11. To develop robust methods for monitoring service performance and report these to theDirector of Pharmacy at agreed intervals
12. To develop robust methods for recording and reporting all dispensing errors and nearmisses. Also to foster an open supportive culture so that reporting is encouraged andlearning from errors is shared
13. To co-ordinate operations through close liaison with the Head of Clinical Services andhead of Medicine Purchasing.
14. To act as the senior pharmacist for managing pharmacy services to the surgicaldirectorate.
15. To provide clinical pharmacy services to designated wards16. To undertake the role of a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber within the clinical area /
setting of Surgery and in line with Trust policy, professional regulatory and nationalguidance.
17. To maintain competence in prescribing according to level of prescribing qualification andparticipate in regular continuing professional development in relation to the role.
18. To prescribe in accordance with the Trust’s Medicine Policy; it’s Non-medical PrescribingPolicy; The Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Formulary and other local and national prescribingguidance.
19. To prescribe within the limits of their individual competence.20. To manage and supervise any pharmacist providing support to the surgical directorate.21. To act as a postgraduate work-based tutor for the University of Bath Clinical Diploma
Programme.22. To attend and contribute to clinical team meetings23. To maintain all necessary records and standards of service24. To take part in the department’s staff appraisal programme and also appraise designated
staff25. To train staff and ensure that all staff with the supply section are trained to undertake
responsibilities and that competence is assessed26. To undertake continuing professional development27. To take part in practice research and audit28. To deputise as the Responsible Person for wholesaler activities in the absence of the
Responsible Person (the Chief Pharmacist) and carry out duties delegated by theResponsible Person to ensure compliance with the quality management system and EUguideline 94/C 63/03 and subsequent updates.
29. To undertake such other duties as may be required by the Director of Pharmacy.
