Backup Music into iTunes You can backup songs and videos that you have downloaded using the Freegal app into iTunes on a computer. However, before starting the backup process, ensure that iTunes will copy any media added to the iTunes Library permanently into the iTunes Media Folder.

Ensure iTunes Copies to iTunes Media Folder

Adding a song to your iTunes Library does not necessarily mean that it has been saved to your computer. A specific setting in iTunes must be enabled for this to happen.

To ensure that all downloaded songs are added to the iTunes Media Folder on your computer, follow these steps:

1. Open iTunes and click on Edit in the menu bar, and then on Preferences. 2. In the Advanced tab, look for the option Copy files to iTunes Media folder

when adding to library. If this box already has a checkmark in it, then any song you have downloaded and opened in iTunes has already been saved to the iTunes Media folder on your computer. No further action is required.

3. If this box does not have a checkmark in it, click in the box to enable the setting and then click on OK.

4. Delete the song from your iTunes library by clicking on the song title and pushing the Delete key on the keyboard. Confirm the deletion if required.

5. Navigate to the Downloads Area in Freegal and re-download the song and open it in iTunes (see below for information on the Downloads Area). The song will now open in iTunes and will be added to the iTunes Media folder on your computer.

14 April 2016

Backing Up Downloads Once you have confirmed that files will be copied to the iTunes Media Folder, you can begin the backup process. First plug your device into a computer and launch iTunes.

On the left-hand side of the screen below the menu bar, a button will appear representing you device. Click on this button.

On the left-hand side there will be a menu area with options including summary, info, apps, music, etc. Click on Apps.

In the centre of the screen, scroll down until you see the area entitled File Sharing. Click on Freegal Music from the list of apps.

15 April 2016

Once you’ve selected Freegal Music, you will see several file folders. One will be for the app itself, and the other will be the folder containing your downloads. See the dates next to the folders to see which one has the downloads in it. The folder with the earliest date is the folder for the app itself. Click on the folder with the later date, then click on Save To.

A Save To dialogue box will open. You can save the downloads anywhere on your computer, but we suggest you save the folder to your Desktop. Once the folder is on your desktop, click on the Music icon in the top-left corner under the menu bar.

Then, click on File and Add Folder to Library.

16 April 2016

In the dialogue box, navigate to your Desktop and click on the folder that you saved there, and then on Select Folder.

Downloads that you had in the folder will then be added to your iTunes Library and are also added (backed up) to the iTunes Media Folder.

Freegal FAQs How much music is on Freegal Music’s website?

It changes daily, but it's safe to say that there are thousands of artists, tens of thousands of albums, and millions of songs. The content is based upon agreements with over 28,000 music labels, including the labels of Sony Music Entertainment.

What’s the difference between Streaming and Downloading?

Downloading is capturing and keeping the file on a permanent basis. Streaming is accessing the file on a temporary basis, while being connected to the internet. Streaming gives you access to more music. Your daily streaming limit is 3 hours, however the Freegal app does not have a streaming counter.

What can I legally do with downloaded or streamed music from Freegal?

The music you access via the Freegal Music site is for non-commercial purposes only. It comes with a license for personal use only. This means that you cannot duplicate it for others, or play it in public, other than for the intended enjoyment of a normal circle of family or friends.

17 April 2016

I lost my device OR my device crashed/broke and I lost my music. Can Freegal restore my library?

Because of licensing agreements, we are completely unable to restore music libraries that have been lost. For this reason, we highly recommend backing up your files. For example, if you have your music library in iTunes on your computer, you could back up to iCloud so your music isn’t only on your computer. If you’re using iOS, you can also back up everything to iCloud. You could also use File Sharing in iTunes to sync the music on your iOS device with iTunes on your computer. You can also backup files to a cloud service, such as Dropbox, to your personal computer, or to an external hard drive. Again, once music is downloaded from the Freegal Music site, it is yours to keep and do with what you want. Backing up personal computing devices is always recommended, and if you elect not to do this, Freegal cannot restore your music library.

How do I burn music to a CD?

Each computer system is different. You can use iTunes, Windows Media Player or a third party software like Roxie. Simply follow the instructions found in the software for burning your CD.

If I create a playlist on the web version of Freegal, will I see my playlist in the Freegal music app?

Yes. Freegal syncs between the mobile app and the web version. If you create a playlist on the web version of Freegal, you will see it in your playlist area on the app (and vice versa).

What if I lose my library card? If you lose your library card, your downloads will still remain on any devices you have downloaded to. Your Wishlist and any playlists you created will not automatically be transferred to your new card. When purchasing a replacement card, please let staff know that you have Freegal playlists and/or a Wishlist you would like transferred to your new card. Staff will contact Freegal on your behalf to request the transfer, which may take several days to complete.

Do my weekly downloads carry over if I don’t use them?

No. If you do not use your weekly downloads, they do not carry over to subsequent weeks.

What if my download fails when downloading using the app?

If a download fails, there is a feature built into the app to recognize an incomplete download, and the next time you open the app it will ask if you want to resume the downloads that have not completed. Resuming a download will not affect your weekly download allotment.

18 April 2016

I have a library card at other libraries that have Freegal. How do I use the Freegal app with multiple cards?

To access the Freegal music collection at other libraries you will need to log out of Freegal app each time you want to switch between libraries.
