*************************** Letter from the rector: Dear Friends,
We have recently visited the model village in Beaconsfield. We went with my parents and my brother as well as our two children and we were all pleasantly surprised by just how much we enjoyed our trip. There seemed to be something for everyone - model houses on fire with actual smoke coming out of the roof, paddle steamers, a working fair ground, a zoo and castles as well of course as some churches!
The following day in church the children were looking at one of the Psalms in which the writer asks the question 'What are man that you are mindful of him?'. They had drawn a picture of the world and placed a tiny dot on the world to represent themselves.
Also recently I enjoyed one of the programmes by Professor Brian Cox which was thinking about peoples place within the universe and what the universe means to people.
So you can see I have been thinking some big thoughts, beginning to think about how incredibly large everything is and how small we are in comparison. The Christian belief is that God created everything - everything that humanity ……….Continued

will ever be able to explore or hypothesise about or even dream about - God made it all (NB - I find this idea much easier to cope with than the atheist view that everything has just existed from before the Big Bang and that we just can't explain it - I find that explanation very unsatisfactory).
So the Christian belief is that God created everything .............. and yet we can speak to him personally and he even loves each of us individually, even knowing the number of hairs on our head, Jesus tells us.
Thinking beyond our world to other solar systems and universes is beyond what my brain can manage - and so is the fact that the God who created all of it loves us personally.
What a great thought!
With all of my love and best wishes,
David

SUNDAY MASS is at 10.00am with a Children’s Liturgy during Mass (& SATURDAY for Sunday 7.30pm) Mass also on Mondays 10.00am (sometimes 7.00am), Tuesdays 5.30pm, Wednesdays 10.00am, Thursdays 12 noon, and Fridays 7.00am
WE REMEMBER ALL WHO HAVE DIED this month. Our Requiem Book is at the back of the Church. We have put the names of our loved ones in the Book already but you could always add one later if you like. On Sunday 2nd November which is All Souls Day we shall pray for them all and, weather permitting, we end the Mass by going outside to bless the Graves and pray for all those buried there and those who founded the ancient Abbey and our Church.
ALL SAINTS DAY will be celebrated on Saturday 1st November with Mass at 10am. This 10am Mass will be followed by a Coffee Morning for Aid to the Church in Need to support the Christian refugees in Northern Syria.
WE PRAY FOR THE DEAD as well as for the living at every Mass every day but especially in November when the Book of Requiem is placed on the Altar. But remember throughout the year anyone can ask for special prayers for their own loved one on an appropriate day such as the day of their death or their birthday. This is called “offering a Mass”. It is normal to give the priest a gift for doing this.
ON REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER our Sunday Mass at 10.00am ends precisely at 11.00am with the 2 minute silence as we pray for all who have died in War especially in the two World Wars of the 20th Century.
A SING-ALONG TEA PARTY will be held on Saturday 29th November from 3.00pm toll 5.00pm. This is a repeat of the very successful event last year which is great fun for everyone from our little children to some of our oldest church members.
A COURSE ON CHRISTIAN BASICS is being held this Autumn & Winter until Christmas, but since most people do not get to such Courses if they are given on a ……….Continued

FREELAND KNIT & NATTER GROUP
A new project for our group has just started - to join in AGE UK's Big Knit campaign for 2014. Age UK has been tasked with knitting 800,000 hats which will adorn Innocent Smoothie bottles next February! Every bottle sold will generate a 25p donation from Innocent to support Age UK’s Spread the Warmth campaign, helping older people during the cold winter months. We won't be able to knit all 800,000 but so far have managed around 40 little hats of all shapes & colours. They have to be finished by 14th November. Keep an eye out in shops in February 2015 when the hats we’ve knitted will be sold on Innocent Smoothie bottles!
Come along and join us one Wednesday afternoon. Everyone is welcome, whether you have never done anything like this before, and wish to learn, or you are an expert, keen to share your knowledge and experience with others.
NEXT MEETINGS: Weds: November 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th and December 3rd & 10th from 2pm to 4pm in Freeland Methodist Chapel.

NOSTALGIA NIGHT AT FREELAND WI At our WI meeting on Monday 13th October Mike Payne gave us a very interesting insight into the The History of Pinewood Studios. The fortunes of the studios rose and fell in line with the success of one off films that became series such as the ‘Carry On’ films. We all enjoyed looking at the various James Bonds and still rated Sean the dishiest . According to Mike it was Superman (and perhaps the CEO of Pinewood studios) who saved the studios from the brink of extinction in recent years – how appropriate is that!!
We are now getting very excited about our meeting on Monday 10th November when Amanda Belz, who is a trainer at Oxford Brookes University and also heads up the Cookery School, will be doing a session for us on Festive Cookery.
We are not quite sure how the evening will pan out but Amanda is brimming with ideas. She thought she would demonstrate something along the lines of :- Christmas Terrine (the kind of thing you could serve on Boxing day), Soda Bread (a quick recipe passed on by a top class chef), quick dessert. Maybe some canapés plus some tricks of the trade and how to get organised in advance etc.
We plan to raffle off the cooked dishes at the end of the evening.
The Freeland WI usually meets at 8pm on the second Monday of the month in the Village Hall. It costs £34.70 to become a member and thereafter it is free to attend monthly meetings. Non-members are welcome to attend meetings at a cost of £5 per meeting. More information and a calendar of events can be found on the Freeland WI web site http://freelandwi.weebly.com

************************************* SAMARITAN’S PURSE, CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX APPEAL
High Street Methodist Church in Witney has been actively involved in the above Appeal for many years. The campaign is focussed on the filling of shoeboxes with small toys and gifts, which are then distributed to orphanages and villages around Eastern Europe, where regretfully the children receive very little support or attention. Through the generosity of very many people in and around the Witney area we have been able to bring much needed happiness to countless children.
Once again we are asking for your help in collecting the following for this year’s Campaign.
Any of the following gifts: small cuddly toy, ball, car, crayons, felt tips, pencils, pens, drawing book, note pad, rubber, pencil sharpener, doll, hat, scarf, gloves or mitts, comb, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, face cloth, or a full shoebox, will be gratefully received and help to bring the joy of Christmas to a child, a family, and a community.
Please take your donations to: High Street Methodist Church, Witney Tel: 01993 709874 (a box will be provided in the coffee shop area)
Shoebox Celebration will be Monday 17th November 2014

FREELAND GARDENING CLUB
We are now at the end of another very successful Gardening Club year, with lots of good speakers and visits. Thanks are due to Jill and the Committee for all that they have done for the Club over the last year.
The meeting held on 22nd September was a very interesting talk and slide show by Duncan Coombs about Hidcote Gardens in Gloucestershire. He mentioned that Hidcote is one of the major Gardens in the country and has many visitors. The Garden is divided by tall hedges into ‘rooms’ some of which are for flowers of one colour but many varieties of that colour, such as the white garden and the red garden. He told us the history of how the garden came into being and how it has developed over many years, and described the various features of the Garden. Hidcote is 4 miles from Chipping Camden and 8 miles south of Stratford on Avon and is well worth visiting and is ideal for a day visit from Freeland.
Once again we start the year with our Annual General Meeting which is to be held on 27th October at 7.30pm in Freeland Hall. This will be followed by something else TBD so come along and find out what has happened over the past year and learn what Ray has planned for the coming year’s programme, as well as the reports from the Chairperson, Jill, the Treasurer Brian and who will be on next year’s committee etc. The meeting is usually over in quite a short time so there will be plenty of time for discussion and socialising! Subs will be due again after this meeting, and on payment a programme card is given which enables you to get a discount at some local garden centres. It is an ideal time for anybody new to the village to come along as a visitor for £3 and possibly join if you enjoy the meeting and club atmosphere.
On 24th November at 7.30pm in Freeland Hall the speaker will be Sarah Mallet who will give us a practical demonstration on how to plant ‘Containers for Winter Colour’. There are already many suitable plants at Freeland Gardens so there will be every opportunity locally to follow her advice!
A donation has again been received by the Club to plant more Bulbs around the village. We are very grateful to the couple for their generosity. Dates will be circulated when we shall again assemble with suitable tools, refreshments, etc and follow Ray’s guide as to where new bulbs are needed. Anybody who sees the party about is welcome to join us!
For further information about the Gardening Club please contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd or ring 881420.
Janet Dalton (Publicity Secretary)

FREELAND FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS It has been a steady but unspectacular start to the season as the Club gets back to basics after the loss of a number of players in the summer.
The Firsts drew their first three league games of the season, including an impressive point in an incident packed game with Riverside. They have also got themselves through to the next round of the President’s Cup with a 3-1 win over Easington.
The Reserves have won one, drawn one and lost one in their start to the season. They beat Adderbury, then drew with Charlton before losing to title contenders Mansfield Road.
The Yeoman have technically won two games, but did not have to kick a ball for either of those. They have lost twice by one goal in the League as they start to get used to life in the top flight. There is to be no Sam Waters’ adventure this year though, as they tumbled out in the first round to the impressively named Ashton Villa.
The Under 11s have made Freeland a fortress winning all three of their home games in style, but they have struggled on their travels so far losing two out of two. There are a number of promising young players in the ranks though, and if they can sort out their away day blues they will be challenging at the top of the table.
In other news, you may have this just in time to get yourself a ticket to our Halloween Race Night on 1st November at the Village Hall. Tickets are just £5 - and under 16's can come for free - so get yourself involved.
A polite notice to residents, please can you try and make sure children do not climb on our goals. We have had to get a grant to purchase new nets because they have been ripped, and we have also purchased some new goals for the Under 11's which have also been slightly damaged. The Football Club will not be held responsible for anyone who falls and hurts themselves, but we will be keeping our eyes peeled for any damage to them and notify the culprits.
Please note that the first of the thirteen 200 Club draws will be announced in next month’s Grapevine as we are still chasing up some of the collections before we start.

******************************************* THE HARVEST SUPPER held in the hall on 6th October was another happy and enjoyable event. The food was very good thanks to Anne Lisa Jones and Dot Sharpe, and also the others who cooked potatoes and vegetables. There was a quiz which taxed our knowledge of England and the counties and some lovely songs from a group called Memory Lane. A profit of £173.10 was made, half given to Freeland Methodist Chapel and the rest given to Besom, a charity in Witney who provide food parcels for people in the area who are in need. Many thanks to everyone who made it such an enjoyable evening. Janet Dalton
