Freestanding Dresden TurkeyAppliqué Instructions

Handy HintsDrying:• Freestanding pieces look best when left to dry with

right side down. This will minimize the tendency for a piece to curl. Be sure to flatten the piece out entirely and allow ample time to dry.

For 3D Appliqué Projects:• Adhere 1 layer of OESD StabilStick TearAway to the

back of appliqué fabrics with temporary adhesive spray BEFORE hooping or placing down for tackdown and cut in place. This gives fabric a more rigid structure.

• A pair of tweezers, hemostats, stiletto or a tiny crochet hook can be extremely helpful when inserting the buttonettes into the eyelets. (See Diagram 1 for explanation of “buttonette” and “eyelet”.)

• Insert the tip of the tweezers, hemostats or crochet hook into the eyelet, grasp the buttonette and pull through the eyelet. Or a stiletto could be used to push the buttonette through the eyelet.

Supplies:Embroidery Thread:• Use the same embroidery thread in the bobbin as the needle.

Needles:• Use an Organ 80/12 Titanium needle for extended needle life.

Stabilizer:• Use water-soluble stabilizer or film water-soluble stabilizer.

General Freestanding Appliqué Guidelines

General Appliqué Instructions1. Hoop two layers of OESD AquaMesh Stabilizer.2. Attach the hoop to the machine and select the design of your

choice.3. Stitch the Placement Stitch. Photo 14. Place a piece of appliqué fabric over the Placement Stitch so

that it is completely covered.5. Stitch the Cut Line & Tackdown stitch. 6. Carefully cut away the excess appliqué fabric. Photo 27. Stitch the remainder of the design and repeat for any

remaining pieces. Photo 38. Remove the hoop from the machine and the design from the

hoop. 9. Trim excess stabilizer from the design.

10. Rinse away remaining stabilizer and allow it to dry face down to prevernt curling.

General Freestanding Applique Instructions• Color sequence 1 is a placement stitch for tail feather 1, 3 & 5 on design 12666-01 Turkey Tail Feathers Left FSA. Hoop

two layers of wash away stabilizer. Embroider placement stitches on the wash away stabilizer. Photo 1• Cut a piece of Stabilstick tear away and a piece of fabric slightly larger than the placement stitch. Peel away the paper

backing and stick to the WRONG side of the fabric. Smooth fabric into place. The stabilizer functions as a lining for the fabric, and the two now function as one unit.

• Cover placement line with the now-lined applique fabric, making sure placement lines are completely covered, fabrics should be right side up. Photo 2

• Color sequence 2 is a cutline and tackdown stitch. After stitching tackdown stitches cut away all fabrics to the outside of the cut line and tackdown. Cut as close as possible without cutting any of the stitching. Photos 3-4

• Color sequence 3 & 4, repeat the process for tail feathers 2 & 4 for placement stitch and cut line and tackdown. Photos 5-8

Double Sided Applique Technique for Turkey Tail• Double side applique process starts with using the backside of hoop on color sequence 13-15. Same process for

Assembly Instructions

• Assemble Turkey Left tail (12666-01) to Right tail (12666-02) pulling eight buttonettes through eight eyelets facing backside. Photos 1 & 2

• Assemble Turkey Wings (12666-05) to Turkey Body Left and Right (12666-03 & 12666-04). Four buttonettes on each wing through four eyelets on each body. Photos 3 & 4

• Attach Turkey Body Left (12666-03) to Turkey Body Right (12666-04). Photo 5• Now attach the buttonettes on the Turkey Base (12666-07) to the eyelets of the Turkey Body. Making sure the pointed

ends of the base face to the back of the Turkey. Photos 6 & 7• Assemble the Turkey Head (12666-06) pulling the buttonettes through each corresponding eyelet. Photo 8

• Attach the Turkey Head (12666-06) by using the tabs and pulling it the slits on the top of the Turkey Body. Photos 9 & 10• Now attach the body to the tail by pulling the ten buttonettes through the ten eyelets of the tail. Photo 11• Attach the two buttonettes base to the eyelets of the tail. Photo 12
