Nancy—ready for fall

Halloween is almost here. Have you made a costume? I am enjoying the tales my friends tell of their costumes. I'll probably don my gold Minnie Mouse ears for the day. Thanks to Silvia Fellows for her class on the Idrija mouse. My blue mouse is almost done, just a bit of ear left. Lace Day is shaping up thanks to all who have stepped up to help: The response to the classes has been overwhelming. Thanks Alan for keeping up with

registration. Thanks to Joan Walton, Lucie Cofield fo stuffing the goodie bags and all those who donated to them. Thanks to Vibs and Betty Jo who will be guiding the bobbin lace beginners. A big thanks to Jean Doig and Lucie Cofield, who have agreed to teach Greek Finger Lace, and to Jean Doig who will also teach a class of netting. Thanks to Pat Fiedler, who will teach Hardanger, and Bill McConnell who will teach the Lace I D class. Thanks to Silvia Fellows and Libby Wilcox who will guide the needle tatters, and Priscilla and Nancy who will guide the shuttle tatters. Julia will start some needle lacers on butterflies. Francesca and Collett have graciously agreed to help with lunches and Lyn Oliver has stepped in with sodas. We need all the cookies we can hustle-up. Keep Lacin', Julia

eeting Minutes:

The October 15, 2011, meeting of the Freeway Lace Guild was called to order at 10:22am by President Julia Brock. Recent member Ellie Piekos is attending her first

meeting. The minutes were accepted as printed. Committee Reports:

Treasurer:

Alan reported 39 preregistrations and 19 lunches for Lace Day. We have a balance of $12,396.97. The rent for October and December has been paid. Since we are elsewhere in November, we are not charged for that month.

Volunteer Hours:

Rita noted we are half-way through our reporting year already. Travel time may be included in demonstration hours. Program:

November 5 is our 27th annual Lace Day.

First Saturday, December 3 brings our Holiday Potluck and voluntary Gift Exchange.

January & February 2012 offers Bill McConnell with a fabulous paisley Russian Tape lace design.

February will also feature a simple beginning project for those not doing the Russian lace. Sylvia will lead an IOLI Convention 2012 5-pointed star project.

March features a shamrock.

Wire Tatting is also on the planned class list.

Library:

Vibs reviewed FLG Library procedure. “Lace Express” will be on one end of the table with a clipboard to sign out magazines. Initial issues of our new subscription have arrived. PLEASE NOTE: NUMBERS on LOOSE pattern sheets MATCH NUMBERS on the ISSUE COVER. DO NOT LOSE THE PATTERN SHEETS. YOU WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACEMENT. Record your name, phone number and “Lace Express” number. “IOLI Bulletins” will be located on the other end of the table with their own clipboard. Record your name, phone number and “Bulletin” number. Regular Books - Fill out the library card located in the book pocket with your name and phone number. Place the card in the small box.

Demonstrations:

Bill discussed the Chaffe-Garcia demo in Etiwanda, Saturday November 19 from 10-4. 1880’s dress requested. A long skirt and long-sleeved blouse will work for the ladies. Bill can assist those who desire something more technically correct or even something easy to whip up if you want a new look. No street fair this year. Bring a lace table. Canopy, chairs and lunch provided. The possibility of demonstrating at Kimberly Crest in Redlands was favorably received by the new director.

Newsletter:

Librarian Vibs raised the question of transferring our old FLG newsletters from paper to DVD (or other). We have all the old copies of our newsletter on paper. These contain minutes, prickings, and the history of our guild. While informational and valuable, they are quite weighty and take up considerable storage space. Pros and cons were discussed. Do we want to have paper copies of the newsletter? The disadvantage of rapidly changing technology was pointed out. It was decided to keep the current paper copies, but starting with 2011 to archive the FLG newsletter in a more compact digital format such as DVD or flash drive.

27th Annual Lace Day:

Raffle-Have items and somebody to sell tickets and man the table. Need someone to organize.

Gift bags-Joan W. is compiling. Lucie will take the items to her.

Consignment-send Joanne a list of your sales stuff and the number of each item. She will make stickers for them.

Lace Class Helpers-Vibs is doing a bobbin lace fish.

- Priscilla and Nancy will guide tatters

- Greek Finger Lace keychain-Julia has prepared kits and Lucie will lead the class

M

- Perhaps Susan B. will handle Hardanger?

- Lace Identification-call Julia

Lunches-

Sodas and Ice – still open. D’Ann needed to go to Wisconsin to deal with a family matter.

Cookies-everyone bake or buy and put a few treats in baggies for lunches and $.50 snack sales.

Butterfly Table - Sylvia will man. Instead of a Lace Exchange this year, the butterflies will be donated to the Texas Holocaust Museum. Lace butterflies should be no bigger than 8” X 10” and unmounted.

FLG Lace Display-Bette C. will supervise the table with the FLG lace banner and members lace projects, such as fair winners.

Kathy Lowe-should be asked to display her tatting.

Rayne has requested a vendor table

Vendors - 4 vendors have signed up; beads, bobbins, Maria and ?

Old Business

Condolences go to longtime FLG member Joan Turner on the loss of her husband Frank. Remember the Winter Lace Conference.

New Business

Records Backup: The Board can discuss. A second copy of vital Guild records such as Treasury and newsletters (minutes) and the need for access to checks with 3 signatures available to be safeguarded with another member of the President’s choosing in case of an unexpected calamity was noted. IOLI: National is once again discussing the need/desire for a name change. The current acronym choice seems to be LACE: lace artisans collectors and educators. Someone has decided that the current name has “drug” connotations. Julia will email the regional rep that we support LACE. Lace Vendors: Maria announced that two lace vendor businesses are changing: The Lacemaker is being sold and Lacy Susan, Susan Wentzel, is selling her stock. She will continue teaching and her Bobbin of the Month program. More info can be located online. Hilda’s estate: Maria also announced that $4000 has been raised for her estate thus far from the sale of her lace items. Lace Day Bobbins: Julia Requested a theme of “winged” for the next series of Lace Day bobbins. This year’s will be a butterfly. A ladybug and a dragonfly were suggested. No objections were heard.

Show and Tell:

Julia - fall leaves and butterfly

Miss Abigail - has her photo in the IOLI “Bulletin”

Elisabeth - made bookmarks

Bill - crocheted an antimacassar with birds and a dragonfly.

Sylvia - shared a cover cloth with machine lace and bobbins. She knitted a shawl with the yarn from the opportunity table.

Lucie - received a butterfly from former President Kathy Hensel for the butterfly donations. Lucie made both a wire and metallic butterfly.

Bette C. - had butterflies, a prayer shawl book, Arizona Lace Day bobbin forms, her completed Alex Stillwell Bucks bookmark with the multiple patterns and Guatemalan weaving note cards for $2 each.

Marilyn brought her current eBay treasures: a Carrickmacross fan and what the vendor termed “the finest Honiton collar she had ever seen.”

The meeting adjourned at 11:33am to a cute Idrija mouse class by Sylvia Fellows. Submitted, Lynn L. Oliver Secretary

Freeway Lace Guild wants to send as many butterflies as possible to the Houston Holocaust Museum. They are trying to collect one and a half million butterflies made in any medium. The butterflies represent the 1,500,000 children who died in the Holocaust and will be part of a stunning exhibit in the Museum that will open in 2013. Please tat, knit, crochet, or bobbin-lace a butterfly to display at our Lace-in table, and then they will be sent on the Museum. (Please make the butterflies smaller than 8" x 10"). Thanks, Sylvia Fellows

haffey/Garcia bobbin lace demo will be on the Nov. 19th (Saturday before Thanksgiving) from 10-4. I will be there from start to finish. The

street will not be closed off this time. We will be provided with a canopy and chairs. Bring your own pillow and table but that is a normal thing. Please try
