I

President’s Message

My Dear Lace Friends,

The excitement is over from February: the Winter Lace Conference is accomplished for 2018. A grand time was had by all, I know. I learned a needlelace technique called Aemilia Ars from Carolyn Wetzel who was the Banquet speaker, as well. It’s going to take some practice to get my work to look as good as hers! But practice I will… It was great to see folks I only see at events like this: Betty Crowell and Jean Doig (two of Freeway’s founders!), Lynn English, Louise Colgan, Susie Johnson…I could go on and on. I felt a definite sense of let-down when I got home Sunday night. Ah, but now onward! We have demo season coming up, Bill will tell us at the meeting; do try to get to one or two--it’s fun! I love talking to people about lacemaking and getting some education out there about it. Probably why I love my job at Knott’s. A lady said to me yesterday, “oh, my, I just thought clothes came from thread and didn’t think about where the thread came from.” Right, sheep don’t grow thread, nor does cotton…human hands. I had a great chat with a sixth-grade teacher who opined that our world is getting too far away from hands-on, too much digital and no “making.” I’m proud to be a maker! Ah me, so much lace, so little time. Now it’s looking forward to Renaissance Faire and IOLI Conference. Happy lacing and making! Sylvia

March Program

Maria Provencher is bringing you a Hedgehog in Foliage which uses only a few pairs. Using 40 lizbeth in two or more shades of brown or beige or even a variegated would be nice and the foliage is great in Varigated green to compliment Wind 4 pairs of brown all the same or varying, with about 3 yards per pair split in half. Your weavers should be the darkest brown and wound with about 10 yards split on two bobbins For the green you will need 5 pairs as well but you only need two yards for 4 pairs split between the two bobbins and 6 yards for the weaver pair split in two. This is a fun project for all levels and we will cover a couple of different turns.

Future Programs April- will feature flowers, since April showers should bring May flowers - Sylvia will bring those to us May- Knitting class with Lucie June- hopefully be tatting July - Bill will bring us something or you can bring a UFO project and get help finishing it
