- Jay Marowitz

Sadly, John Tetz passed away July 8, 2020. He was a long time member of MAF. John was a brilliant engineer, environmentalist and had many interests, the most notable of which

was human powered vehicles. His famous foam shell Velomobile is shown below. It was his main

bike. He brought it to our Rambles and frequently rode it while shopping in Succasunna, where he

lived.

John, a retired Bell Labs Engineer, built the above Velomobile. It was fast. I never rode with him,

but those who did, including the late Marty Epstein, said “he just took off and we didn’t see him

again during the ride.”

The Velomobile is a recumbent bike with two wheels in front and one in the back, turn signals, and at one time, was the world’s lightest such vehicle by almost 50%. The foam shell is the key to its light weight. Unlike similar, commercially available enclosed recum-bents, the shell is not designed to support the rider’s weight when getting in and out. You lean on the steering mechanism to do that. The other models have stiff, heavy shells.

Before there were eBikes, John added an electric power assist for climbing. The battery recharged on the downhills. Earlier, the interest in such vehicles was mostly in Europe and John was relatively well known there. Here’s a video, “Velomobiles and Sustainability”, where John answers questions about the design with an inquisitive audience. In 2009, when I was club President, John approached me about publishing a series of articles about the his-tory of cycling. I told him that we would be glad to and in the end, Pat Kipp and I helped proof read and publish them as special editions of the newsletter. They are all good, interesting articles with some terrific pictures. Pete Nevins created a special section on our website to house them. Here’s a link to the collection. Cycling was only one of John’s interests. He was also an artist. He specialized in “3D Mobile Art.” Right now, one of his mobiles is hanging in the Morris County, and the Roxbury libraries. He used to have several of mobiles hanging in the Morris County Government Offices on Court Street, Morristown. Others are shown below. Here’s a link to more of them (click on ‘Photos’). For a long time, John concentrated on themes incorporating the letter ‘O’. He used a computer to generate

the hanging parts of the mobiles.

He had many other interests; among them were photography, his lake and driving very fast in his Porsche. John was a very creative, talented guy, it was a privilege to have known him. He will be missed. Read more:: obituary

MAFF CPR and First Aid Courses Hi Fellow Freewheelers, I hope this message finds you all well and doing everything in your power so that you, yours, and the rest of us can stay that way. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CPR and first aid courses sponsored by the Morris Area Freewheelers Foundation will be cancelled until further notice. I will resume classes at a time when responsible medical authorities and common sense deem it appropriate to do so.

Upon resuming classes, I'll notify members who were due for their renewal beginning January 2020 and through resumption. I'll also contact members who have not yet taken the course but have expressed a desire to do so. In addition, I welcome newly interested members to contact me.

Stay well, be safe, and thank you for taking the time to learn how to save a life.

The Dangers of Passing on the Right

By John Duggan, active.com with additions by Tony Marchand, M.D.

Whether you are riding your bicycle or driving your car, passing on the right is inherently dangerous. Although it is legal to pass on the right in certain situations, when doing so, cyclists need to be extra vigilant.

As cyclists, we encounter many situations where either the line of traffic to our left is stopped or mov-ing slowly and there is a wide-open shoulder, bike lane, or "pavement of sufficient width" for the bicy-cle to pass on the right.

While the bike lane and shoulder scenarios seem clear, whether it is legal to pass in situations where there is "unobstructed pavement of sufficient width" depends on the facts of each situation.

Just because the law says you can travel 25 miles per hour in the wide-open bike lane, shoulder or un-obstructed pavement, and therefore pass all of the cars that are either stopped or slowly moving to your right, does not mean that this is the most prudent and safest course of action.

As cyclists, we must keep in mind that we are essentially invisible to motor vehicle drivers and there-fore must ride defensively. When passing on the right, cyclists need to slow down and anticipate that motor vehicle operators may do the following:

Suddenly turn right into a driveway or side street without looking or signaling.

When stopped at a light, you may not see the car blinker and the car may not see you as he turns right.

Unintentionally drift into the bike lane/shoulder. Open a passenger door.

Page 8 August 2020 FREEWHEELER NEWS

Various options you have: 1. If you are at a stop light or stop sign along with several cars, pull ahead of the lead driver just

slightly so as to be visible to the driver, at least enough to be seen should they want to turn. 2. I often see a group of cyclists all try to move forward at a light and bunch up toward the front

of a line of cars. As the cyclists move out after the light changes, drivers of the cars can’t tell how many riders there are and may turn into some cyclist who are lagging behind. If you are a part of several riders in line with several cars, don’t bunch up - but pull ahead of one of the cars in the line so that he/she can see you and slightly behind the other car. Wait for the car in front to move first - watching front cars’ blinkers and noting if he seems to be turning right . The car behind you will note where you are because you’re in his line of vision. This is one of the more difficult and dangerous problems to solve.

3. Sometimes you can act like a car and pull to the center of the lane as you approach the light or stop sign (only if safely possible).

4. If you in the center of the lane, acting as a car, don’t follow a car in front of you too closely as both of you cross the intersection. I had a car coming from the other direction making a left-handed turn and not see me being partially blocked from view by a small van in front of me. Luckily the car stopped at the last minute.

5. Watch for cars slowing down for no detectable reason. They may be turning into a driveway in front of you without using their blinkers.

6. Be wary of passing stopped cars on the right in case a passenger door opens or he starts up and pulls into a driveway in front of you.

7. As you pass parked cars on their left, leave a little room for door suddenly opening. Also watch for brake lights or backup lights that may indicate the driver is about to move out into your lane.

There is case law in Washington that states that a vehicle driver, when passing another vehicle, has the right to presume that the driver of the overtaken vehicle will comply with the law and signal and look before turning. While the case law may help you argue your claim to the insurance company or judge, it will not do anything to help your broken bones heal faster.

Never presume that a motor vehicle operator is aware of your presence until you have made direct eye contact.

Enjoy your open lane of travel, but ride defensively and travel at a safe speed that allows you to stop or take evasive action when you are suddenly confronted with an emergency situation. You need to ride with extreme caution when passing on the right.

Edge Traps

-Jay Marowitz I’ve seen too many crashes due to edge traps over the years. One was on a bike trip to Italy. A member of our group fell on one fracturing his hip on the first day. I also fell and was knocked out by an edge trap (groove in the road) while cycling in Tucson, AZ. The problem: Whenever your direction of travel (momentum) is even a little different from the direction your front wheel points, you will fall. Edge traps cause this misalignment by constraining the direction of your front wheel.

There are different types of edge traps, but here’s a general description: An edge trap is a hole (groove) or a rise (curb) that runs roughly parallel to your direction of travel and can constrain (trap) the pointing direction of your front wheel.

If your front wheel falls into or rubs up against the trap, it makes it impossible to steer other than in the direction of the trap. If you were traveling, in a slightly different direction than your trapped front wheel points, due to the edge trap, you will fall.

Here’s a couple of well-known edge traps:

Figure 1 Road Milling Produces Edge Traps

Figure 2 Road Pavement Edges Figure 3 Railroad Tracks

Sometimes residential or commercial driveways have small, raised lips which can be edge traps. Also, edge traps sometimes temporarily appear during road repairs. In general, you always want to cross an edge trap with your front wheel pointing as close to a 90 degree angle to the trap direction as possible.

5th Annual Penn Dutch Weekend By Roy Fischman On the weekend of June 27 and 28 we had the 5th Annual Penn Dutch weekend. This weekend almost did not go out because of the restrictions due to the corona virus. As the time for the weekend drew near I checked frequently for the latest news. Fortunately, Lancaster County was declared to be in the "green phase" on the Friday we got there. But because of the pandemic, the number of trippers going was down to 10. Last year it was 25.

On Friday, June 26, we checked into the Best Western in Intercourse, Pa. At 3 pm in front of our hotel , we met up with the Lancaster Bicycle club people for the first ride of our weekend with their club. Club President, Dave Stauffer and the club Ride Director, Rich Brown lead us on a short 16.6 mile flat ride (by their club standards) . Once we got off a main road, we rode through green fields, cows, horses, goats and the occasional buggy, driven by an Amish person.

That evening we met in the lobby and drove to dinner at the historic Revere Tavern, built in 1740, for out-door dining.

Next day, after breakfast at the hotel, we drove to the start of the Saturday bike ride and met up again with Dave and Rich. The ride was 34.1 miles with a shortcut possible that cut off 9 miles. We split up into different groups based on pace. The weather was hot but we were kept cooler with the frequent clouds, a cooling breeze, and some brief misty rain. Most of the ride we owned the road, no cars around. A ride through one of the covered bridges was a highlight.

Three of the riders took a different ride. They took the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail. Beautiful trail, I was told. During the ride they explored Lititz, rated to be one of the best small towns in America.

During our ride it was interesting to see the Amish living as they had for ages, women in long, flowing dresses and white caps, men in white shirts, black pants and wide brimmed hats. Driving beautiful horses to plow their fields and pull their buggies. And the teens didn't have a cell phone in their hands. No one did!

In the afternoon some of us swam in the hotel pool. Many shops in the area were in the Kitchen Kettle Village, a few blocks from the hotel. Some of them had beautiful Amish quilts and furniture. Saturday night, most of us ate at the Cat's Meow in Manheim, Pa. Again, outdoor seating.

Sunday, morning, It was remarkable to see dozens of Amish buggies on the shoulders of the roads going to their Sunday church services. Three of us took a 21 mile ride. We rode through the fields and a few hills, around Lancaster airport. It was an enjoyable weekend in the countryside and getting to know each other. Thanks to all who came out for this Penn Dutch weekend.

Quick Tip: When is It Time to Quit a Ride or Event?

https://www.roadbikerider.com/when-to-quit-ride-or-event/

When is it smart to quit a race, century or even a tough training ride? When is it okay to battle on? Here are some questions to ask yourself when Mr. DNF is calling your name.

—How important is this event? If it’s the Tour de France and your team depends on you continuing, you can justify trying to push on. If it’s the local weekend group ride and you’re risking three weeks off the bike because a knee is killing you, turn around and pedal home (gently).

—Am I feeling discomfort or real pain? Learn to tell the difference. Burning muscles aren’t the same as injured muscles.

—Can I ride through this problem? What’s your history? If you’re susceptible to knee tendinitis and you begin feeling telltale pain, better pack it in. But if your knees are sound and you feel a twinge, you may be able to ride through it. Gear down, stand for a bit or hop off to stretch and walk for a minute.

—Am I compromising my general health? If it’s dangerous to continue — due to high heat or humidity, for instance — be smart and live to ride another day.

It’s better to stop and preserve the season than risk making an injury worse.

MAF Bike Adventures 2020 See website for more detail

The Club designates "as official" a number of cycling trips or one-day events each year. These are fun-neled through MAF "event coordinators". However, all registrations and travel arrangements are up to each member. These events and trips are open to all members of the Club.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK FOR WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!

If you are interested in becoming an "event coordinator" or would like to organize a tour please notify Mark Jay: [email protected] and it will be added to this list. You do not have to be the MAF leader on the event to have it listed here.

The Club also organizes and sponsors its own event rides and trips such as the Lehigh Valley Trail Ride, the Lake George Tour, the New Member Ride & Lunch and others that are restricted to club members only (residents of the immediate household of members are the only exception). Non-members of the club may participate in club trips by paying an additional $27 fee to join the club for a one year membership. These are also captured and listed on this page.

If you went on a Bicycle Adventure in 2019 (2020 as we move forward) and would be willing to share your experience with the club, please send Mark a brief write up (photos encouraged). Adventure write ups will be submitted to the Newsletter editor and published as space permits.

Here are two recently crafted articles for traveling considerations: Travel Insurance and Engaging a Third World Tour Guide. Feel free to download or contact me directly should you have any questions.

Lastly, we have another listing classified as "OTHER ORGANIZATION RIDES" (where there is no MAF ride coordinator as yet). For those events (which are on a separate page) REFER TO: Other Organization Events. As with Club designated events please notify Mark Jay:[email protected] for inclusion to this category.

Lake George Getaway: Friday afternoon September 11 – Monday, September 14, 2020 (Monday is op-tional)

The 20th annual Lake George Getaway Weekend (a club favorite!) will take place Friday afternoon Sept. 11 through Monday Sept. 14. Once again, let’s hope for nice weather! It again promises to be a great event with some fun activities planned and great dining choices. We will be staying in the lakeside hamlet of Bol-ton Landing, located 8.5 miles north of the Village of Lake George on the western shoreline. Enjoy the mid-September weather with evenings that can be cool, but the days are almost always warm (sometimes after a chilly morning). There is a facility for storing your bike indoors at the hotel. While this is a cycling week-end, there are lots of off the bike activities to suit most tastes including hiking, boating, horseback riding, zip line adventures as well as tourist entertainment like sight-seeing cruises, museums and shopping. Eve-ryone will enjoy just sitting on the dock with a drink in hand looking at the view. Check out the options at: www.lakegeorge.com

Advanced registration is required (see “Registration and Fees” below). The event is capped at 20 people to avoid my losing my mind, so sign up early! Registration and Fees: Registration is $30 per person. Your registration fee includes a wine and cheese reception party followed by a buffet dinner on the dock/patio on Friday evening. Let me know if you have special dietary needs at least a week before the event! More wine and cheese on Saturday night. Great cue sheets and wonderful rides.

This event is for MAF members only, however, members may bring non-cycling guests who are residents of their household but any others will be subject to an additional fee of $27 for a one year club membership. Registration and payment including club membership fees for non-members are required in advance. See MAF website for Registration Form. Email Glen Hukins [email protected] with any questions.

Additional Information: The cycling is the for experienced and self-sufficient cyclists. Cyclists generally form into groups, but there will not be any formal SAG or support. The rides are mostly C terrain and done at a leisurely to moderate pace. There will be optional rides available for everyone from "casual" to A terrain. We will be cycling in hilly areas but bypass many hills by cycling along the Schroon River. You will enjoy cycling along Schroon Lake, Trout Lake, Brant Lake, Loon Lake, Beaver Pond, Friends Lake and the Hudson River. Monday is an open day. You may choose to ride, try some good hiking nearby, or participate in a boat ride (tentative) out to one of the beautiful islands for a campfire picnic and, if the water is warm, swimming and tubing. There will be a separate fee to cover the cost of the boat, as explained on the registration form. There are picnic benches on all of the islands. There will be happy hours Saturday and Sunday. Please BYOB as the the wine supplied is not limitless, and boy can these cyclists drink wine!. Should you wish to participate, after happy hour, we may dine at the Algonquin Restaurant (great views of the lake and wonderful food), the Barnsider Restaurant (great BBQ), Cate’s Italian Garden or whatever the weather might dictate. One night we may cap off the evening with some highly competitive mini-golf. Better hit the driving range now to practice! We have also been known to have some exciting games of left-right-center. Remind me to get the dice from Mary before she leaves on another global adventure!

Bring a windbreaker and tights in case we get some cool off shore winds as well as a rain jacket (just in case, but hopefully will not be needed). Spare tubes and bike pump should be standard. For off the bike, plan on bringing clothing covering everything from summer swimming weather to mid-fall chills. Again, the timetable for the weekend will be from Friday afternoon September 11 thru Monday September 14, 2020 with home base at the Northward Ho Resort. Hope to see you there for some great Adirondack fun. Contacts: Glen Hukins (973) 570-5147 [email protected]

Poet’s Corner by John J. Burns

I Often Wish I Could Be More Like Him

I often wish I could be more like him

- more regal looking, lean, and trim,

and highly disciplined when instinct provokes

for he behaves not in ways that irritate folks.

He plays honest and hard and can run down a ball

faster than heroes we’ve enshrined in "Our Hall",

and he's eager to learn things pleasing to me,

unless chasing a squirrel racing fast to its tree.

He's admired by all he meets on his walks,

save for the wildlife he relentlessly stalks.

He's protective of turf and our family,

and by warming our hearts he gives us all glee.

Luke my Labrador and I have grown close as kin.

I often wish I could be more like Him.
