With Margaret Thornberry stepping down as President at the end of the last fiscal year, it is an appropriate time to do some ‘evolving’ at the FCAC. My immeasurable gratitude to Margaret Thornberry for her service as our past President. Under her stewardship, we not only embraced social media and electronic communication–things we take for granted today–we also developed a board that is representative of the Fremont community. We introduced new programs and let go those that had run their course. I hope to continue the positive change that FCAC presidents have shepherded since the organization’s inception.. The list of my predecessors is distinguished and many continue to be committed to the arts in Fremont through their contributions of time and money. New faces to our board and program chairs are Paul Davis as Treasurer, Richard Lau for Flash Fiction event, and Rajeev Shankar as co-chair of the Juried Photography Exhibit. Many of you know Paul, or have benefitted from his efforts in local arts. He has been active with local theater (StageOne), plays viola and/or violin in the pit orchestra from time to time with StarStruck Theater and in his ‘free time’, enjoys archeology, astronomy, and writing with the Fremont Writers’ Guild. President’s Message: EvolutionOur Fall Focus means the seasons are changing–you will also notice some changes in our Board of

Directors and Program Managers. With Margaret Thornberry stepping down as President at the end of the last fiscal year, it is an appropriate time to do some ‘evolving’ at the FCAC.

My immeasurable gratitude to Margaret Thornberry for her service as our past President. Under herstewardship, we not only embraced social media and electronic communication–things we take for grantedtoday–we also developed a board that is representative of the Fremont community. We introduced newprograms and let go those that had run their course.

I hope to continue the positive change that FCAC presidents have shepherded since the organization’sinception.. The list of my predecessors is distinguished and many continue to be committed to the arts inFremont through their contributions of time and money.

New faces to our board and program chairs are Paul Davis as Treasurer, Richard Lau for Flash Fiction event, and Rajeev Shankar as co-chair of the Juried Photography Exhibit. Many of you know Paul, or havebenefitted from his efforts in local arts. He has been active with local theater (StageOne), plays viola and/orviolin in the pit orchestra from time to time with StarStruck Theater and in his ‘free time’, enjoys archeology, astronomy, and writing with the Fremont Writers’ Guild.

FREMONT CULTURAL ARTS COUNCIL – ANNUAL FLASH FICTION WRITING COMPETITION, Saturday, October 19 at Half Price Books, Fremont Hub, host of the event. The Theme for the competition is An Alternate History of Fremont. Prizes will be awarded and refreshments (courtesy of Bundt Cakes and Half Price Books) will be available. ART SCULPTURE and EVENT CENTER NEWS – Fremont announces a new visitor to the Downtown – The Solacil, a sculpture created by artist Tigre Bailando of Los Angeles. It will remain at the corner of Capitol Avenue and Fremont Blvd., until May, 2021. The City has also approved design for Phase 1 of the Civic Center project. Construction is estimated to begin in October of this year. The project in Fremont Downtown is a catalyst program designed to encourage social and economic health and civic pride in the community.

September 21 – 51st Annual Textile Exhibit closes this Saturday. Fiber works from artists around the Bay Area range from traditional to experimental. Included is a showing of historical textile art from the Patterson House in Fremont.

October 4 – “ON THE VERGE” an exhibit by artist Nancy Brown opens this Friday evening with a reception in the gallery, from 7 to 9 p.m., open to the community. The exhibit continues to November 2.

December 6-8 Annual Holiday Gala – this weekend at the gallery. Friday evening, 7 to 9, opening with music, refreshments and a first chance at the arts and crafts display for sale. Saturday and Sunday, free admission. Check website for more information.

The Canyon will be closed to vehicular traffic for this Stroll and Roll event, this Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The first hour, 7 to 8 a.m., the road will be closed to all but cyclists. From 8 a.m. to 2, the road will be open to all pedestrians and bicyclists.

December 15 – 23 LAS POSADAS – Sponsored by Mission San Jose and Fremont Cultural Arts Council, participants will meet at 6 p.m. on the steps of the Mission Museum, Mission Blvd., Fremont, and walk to a different location each evening. In remembrance of the journey to Bethlehem, they will be denied entry until they are identified and then welcomed in for an evening of music and refreshment.

MEETINGSAAUW (Fremont Branch American Association of University Women) advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, philanthropy, education and research. AAUW is one of the world’s largest sources of funding for graduate women (Masters and Ph.Ds). Membership is open to anyone holding an associate’s (or equivalent, e.g. RN), a bachelor’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Men are welcome to join.

MISSION PEAK HERITAGE FOUNDATION meets the third Thursday of each month at the Shinn House, 1251 Peralta Blvd., 7 p.m. Tours of the James C. Shinn Estate, which includes the George M. Kato Gardens, are given the first Wednesday and third Sunday of each month, from 1 to 3 p.m. The Hummingbird and Butterfly Gardens, sponsored by Friends of Heirloom Flowers and the Audubon Society, are located on the estate.

MUSIC FOR MINORS II is a nonprofit music enrichment program, since 1988, keeping music in pre-school through elementary classrooms. Community volunteers are trained by MFMII to become music docents, sharing and singing/singing songs, rhythmic movement dance, instrumentation, and listening appreciation to over 5000 children weekly. Classroom teachers are in-serviced as docents and integrate music into the core curriculum. Become a MFMII music docent, board member, or sponsor of our community concerts or training. NILES ESSSANAY SILENT FILM MUSEUM board meets monthly at 37395 Niles Blvd., Fremont. Call 510.796.1940 for additional information. The Museum Store is open Saturday noon to 4 p.m. and Sundays 1 a.m. to 3 p.m. or at the Saturday Evening shows. The Museum has silent films every Saturday night from 7:30 to about 10 p.m. The cost is usually $7 per person.

OHLONE HUMANE SOCIETY meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., in the conference room of the Fremont Activities Center, 3375 Country Drive. The Society is an animal welfare nonprofit servicing the Tri-City Area. We care for all creatures from native species to companion animals. Guests are always welcome. TEAM FREMONT/FSBC powered by Chipotle, meets on the second Monday of each month at the Fremont Community Activities Center, 3375 Country Drive, Fremont, 7:30 p.m. Team Fremont is the racing section of the Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club (FFBC). The members range in age from 12 to 62 and are the only bicycle racing team in the Tri-City area. They help introduce new athletes into the sport of bicycle racing.

ALAMEDA COUNTY HISTORY DAY COMPETITIONTheme for 2020 is “BREAKING BARRIERS IN HISTORY”Fourth and fifth grades can enter a 2D poster on the theme.

Sixth thru eighth grade and high school students can enter a Historical Paper, as an individual, or an exhibit, or a documentary, or a performance or a website as either an individual or a group of up to 5

students.School contests are held between January 20 and February 8, 2020.
