FRENCH BAREFOOT HISTORY

Patrick Wehner, World and Region EA champion

Page 2: FRENCH BAREFOOT HISTORY - WorldBarefootCouncil.com

The first French skier who skied on his bare feet was tournament skier Philippe Logut. He was a tricks specialist, and was crowned tricks World Champion in 1959 at Milano. Then, he captured the bronze medal in the 1963 tricks event of the World championships, held in Vichy.

However, the pioneer of competitive barefooting in France is Bernard Combier, who lived in Macon on the Saône River and organised national competitions before the first French nationals, as well as European trophy and clinics in the beginning of the eighties. As a member of the French national team, he enters the 1980 Worlds championships in USA and won the first tricks national title in 1981. Meanwhile, a young talented skier won the following national title in tricks just the year after Bernard. It was Florent Carmin, well known for his TV movies, which gave enthusiast for the sport to many French skiers. Florent then lead the French team to its first medals, with tricks in 1986, then tricks and overall in 1988.

During this 1988 competition, held in the south of France, the national team won its first medal at an international level, finishing behind the untouchable British squad.

Florent Crmin broke the Region EA tricks record, scoring 3490 points in September 1985.

He retired competition in 1991, after being defeated by Eric Combier, the son of Bernard.

Though he won its first national title in 1988, Eric Combier reached the top of French barefoot in 1991, when he won the overall title in front of Florent Carmin, and kept this sceptre for six years in a row, broking open men national records in slalom and tricks. He was involved in the second European team medal for France in 1997, still in silver.

History was made during August 1997, when France hosts its first World competition with the 2nd Junior World championships in La Mede. Young Philippe Renoux - who learned to jump inverted just a few weeks before the competition - won the gold medal in the jump event.

With his team mate Florent Pigeat, he gave the year before a first European team gold in the junior division and he won himself all the European titles at 1997 junior Europeans in Germany.

Philippe was a talented slalom specialist. He broked the open national record a lot of times and especially three times in the same national competition in 1997. He still hold this record more than twenty years after.

The year after, he won the Region EA slalom title in Spelthorne, where the French team finally gained its first gold with a brilliant team and a new skier coming from Germany… Patrick Wehner. Due to this move from Germany to France, Patrick cannot enter any international event in 1997. The year after, he became Region EA open champion in tricks, jump and overall. In 2001 he sets a new World record in tricks and won the open tricks title at 2002 open World championships. Leading the French team, he won four overall title in a row, between 2000 and 2003, when the French team took the team title in the same years. In 2004, the team won the bronze medal at the World championships. Patrick won couples of Region EA slalom and tricks titles before he had to stop barefooting, due to a bad illness. After Patrick’s retirement, French won once more the team title at 2011 Region EA championships organised in Chartres, France. This year, young Clement Maillard won tricks and overall, after a gold medal in jump the year before. Clement won two more titles in Europe in 2016 (tricks and overall). The senior national team won a lot EA senior titles, with jump specialist Jean-Marie Poncey winning a lot of titles in jump, but also in slalom, tricks and overall (6 overall titles in a row between 2008 and 2013). Fabienne Michel in senior ladies, Bruno Giacuzzo, Eric Combier and Dylan Tellier were also gold winners on an European level in senior men division.
