DÉCOUVRIR|NOVEMBER–DECEMBER’14|1

The months of November and December are very important in the French culture.

First of all, the All Saints’ Day celebrated on November 1st. As its name suggests, is the

day of all the saints. Many think it is also the Day of the Dead! It is a mistake: the Day of the Dead takes place on November 2nd. But because the All Saints’ Day is a holiday in France, it is easier to go to the cemetery that day!

Other highlights will be the Christmas and New Year’s Day. Christmas is a family holiday, synonymous with gifts. The New Year’s Day and especially the Eve of New Year’s Eve, December 31, is devoted to friends and party, with an explosion of joy at midnight!

I invite you to read some stories on page ... on both the festivals. Let’s precise that these festivals have an undeniable religious origin... but they have become the cultural heritage of France and everyone or most of the people, regardless of religion, celebrate them!

What a pleasure it is to cherish these festivities by mixing Indian and Diwali with French culture and Year-end festivals.

You would have also noticed that we have tried to improve the layout of our bi-monthly magazine: a small makeover to jump further in the year 2015. Do share your comments on these changes on our website: www. ahmedabad.afindia.org

I wish you all a great festive season.

Dear students, dear French culture lovers,With the reading club we continue our journey through centuries: we got an idea of what the Renaissance was about, we’ll now attack the 17th century, “l’époque classique “, “le grand siècle”, as it was called also. It’s at this time that France is supposed to have dominated the diplomatic, artistic and cultural scene in Europe. You’ve all seen pictures of the palace in Versailles , heard about Louis the 14th , “ le roi Soleil”, who’s also given his name to this epoch, “ le siècle de Louis 14”, about Molière, Corneille, Racine, but also Pascal to name just a few… Come and dive with us in this fascinating century and enjoy some of the best in French literature! This workshop, though open to all students interested, would be particularly beneficial to those preparing for the C1 exams, art stream.

Dear students, dear friends,Kaléidoscope is back for you to glance at the French world: through songs, paintings, movie extracts, great literary texts as well as minor ones, comics and many other media, we’ll get an idea of the way French people have perceived their world. In this session, we’ll center our rambles around “la mer” et “l’art”. This isn’t a hardcore course with a strict curriculum; it’s just a pretext to get acquainted with documents you wouldn’t access otherwise. So if you’re curious, if you enjoy a variety of approaches, come and join us! Though this workshop isn’t defined by an academic syllabus, it will help students wishing to work on their comprehension skills (both oral and written).

About ZardosiThe word ‘Zardosi’ is made up of two Persian terms, Zar meaning gold and Dozi meaning embroidery. Under the rule of Mughal Emperor Akbar, Zardosi was at its peak. But under the rule of Aurangzeb, he stopped supporting this craft thus resulting in its decline.

Zardosi involves elaborate designs, using gold and silver threads, studded pearls and precious stones. Initially, embroidery was done with pure silver wires and silver wires coated with real gold.

About the artistShahidhussain Ansari has been practising zardosi art for 22 years. Born in Radhanpur (Gujarat), Shahidhussain has also conducted workshops for National Institute of Design (NID), National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Indian Institute of Crafts and Design and Gujarat State Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporations. He has taken

inspiration from the watercolour paintings that were prepared bythe French architects who workedin Ahmedabad during theIndo-French RestorationProject for Heritage Monuments.

Since 1801, All Saints’ Day is one of the four Christian religious holidays in France. Traditional agricultural sayings prescribe the sowing of wheat on the day before the All Saints’ Day so that all the saints come to bless!

In France, every day of the year is associated with a saint. We wish all those who bear the name of the saint of the day. But there are many more names than the 365 days of the year. So, the All Saints' Day ("All Saints") allows honouring all the saints who do not have a day associated to their name in the year!

Post 1000 AD, All Saints’ Day is associated with the Day of the Dead - subsequently scheduled for November 2. Indeed, it is a way of saying that death is followed by life, as per the Christian belief in the Resurrection. The day of the birth of the saints in heaven is indeed that of their death.

The All Saints’ Day as the Day of the Dead suggested some important observations of which the ancient almanacs keep track.

On November 2, it was forbidden to engage in festivities or make noise. Of course, marriages were to be avoided as well as the writing of his will for the fear of attracting the death and the evil eye. As at the funeral, the meal should be lean and contain no pastery or liqueur or coffee. In the North, it was customary to cook a “bread of the dead”. In rural areas, it was also customary to name the boys “Toussaint” who were born that day.

Before Christmas, the Romans celebrated the cult of Mithras, the Persian god of light, in the first century BC. December 25, then used to be the day of the winter solstice, the birth of god Mithra, the “unconquered sun” where a bull was sacrificed in his honour. For the Christian religion, Christmas did not exist; it is from the second century that the Church seeks the exact date of Christ’s birth. Since there was no document showing the date of birth of Jesus, the Church could take the freedom of selecting a date that coincides with the winter solstice to counter the pagan festival of god Mithra. Thus, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ, but also the festival of light, much like DIWALI!

It is from the fifth century that they began to celebrate Midnight Mass. Christmas spread

gradually across Europe.

Today, for some people, Christmas has become more traditional an institution than religious. It provides an opportunity for families to gather and children to have gifts.

Who doesn’t have wonderful memories of this magical festival: Christmas??
