des droits de l’homme et des droits civiques est un projet sponsorisé

par Coca-Cola, avec un budget d’environ 63 millions d’euros. Ce com-

plexe de 4000 m2 à la forme angulaire vise à lier le passé au présent à

travers des expositions, des conférences et des événements.

Albi/Grand ThéâtreDans le quartier des Cordeliers, sous une enveloppe de mailles métal-

liques, l’architecte Dominique Perrault (Bibliothèque nationale de

France François-Mitterrand) dévoile un cube de brique et de verre qui

abrite un théâtre de 900 places, mais aussi 30 000 m2 de parking en

sous-sol, de salles de cinéma, de tables de restaurant…

� In the Cordeliers neighbourhood in Albi, under an envelope of

metallic mesh, the architect Dominique Perrault (François-Mitterand

French National Library) unveils a cube of brick and glass hosting not

only a 900-seat theatre, but also 30,000m2 of underground parking,

Dans une municipalité située au nord de Montréal, cet ancien couvent de

1881 a été restauré afin d’y héberger la mairie et les bureaux de la muni-

cipalité. Résultat ? Entre l'édifice ancien et la structure moderne, un dia-

logue très esthétique, particulièrement réussi, s’est instauré. La pierre et le

clocheton d’antan se marient parfaitement avec le nouvel ajout extérieur.

� A historical convent from 1881 was recycled in a community north

of Montreal. In the revival of a patrimonial building for city hall and mu-

nicipal offices, an esthetic dialogue presents istelf between the old

building and the modern structure. Stone masonry and a bell tower of

times passed contrast quirkily with newer rectangular glass forms.

Enclave préservée en République populaire de Chine, Shenzhen est devenue

en trente ans, grâce à son statut de zone économique spéciale, un important

centre d’affaires et d’investissements étrangers. L’aéroport de Shenzhen

Bao’an se devait de mieux accueillir des voyageurs toujours plus nombreux :

prévu sur 20 ans, un plan d’expansion en trois phases devrait le hisser au

rang des plus grands aéroports internationaux. La première phase vient de

s’achever avec le Terminal 3, caractéristique avec sa structure qui reprend la

forme d’un nid d’abeilles. A l’origine du bâtiment, les architectes italiens

Massimiliano et Doriana Fuksas signent un projet spectaculaire qui fait la part

belle à la lumière naturelle. N’ayant jamais réalisé d’aéroport avant de

remporter l’appel d’offres en 2008, le duo romain a pu donner libre cours à

son imagination. Le dessin pour le moins original de la structure « évoque

l’image d’une raie manta, un poisson qui respire et qui change de forme pour

devenir un oiseau célébrant l’émotion et la fantaisie d’un vol. » nous

expliquent les architectes. Donnant l’illusion d’être habillée d’une double

peau, la coque en acier du Terminal 3 est perforée de lucarnes hexagonales

en verre qui apportent non seulement la légèreté à la structure massive mais

distribuent une luminosité spectaculaire à l’intérieur. Sous le toit alvéolé et

ondulant se trouvent 250 structures de polycarbonate en forme d’arbres qui

cachent les systèmes de climatisation et d’éclairage et accentuent

l’inspiration organique du lieu. Avec l’aéroport de Shenzhen, le Studio Fuksas

rompt avec l’architecture classique des aéroports en créant un design unique

et multisensoriel. Une réalisation qui incarne à la perfection le désir de la

Chine d’intégrer le peloton de tête des grandes nations commanditaires qui

seront à l’origine des grands projets d’architecture à venir.

� Enjoying the Special Economic Zone status in the People’s Republic of China

for the past 30 years, Shenzhen has become a focal point for foreign

investment and business. In response to steadily increasing travel volume, the

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport has been undergoing a major three

phase expansion that will continue over the next 20 years. The organically shaped, honeycomb inspired

Terminal 3 was phase 1 of the long-term overhaul. A kaleidoscope of natural light and geometric forms

characterize the building designed by the Italian architects. The duo won the competition to design

the project in 2008 and the fact that they had never designed an airport before gave their imaginations

free rein. Fuksas explains that the structure’s singular design “evokes the image of a manta ray, a fish

that breathes and changes its own shape, undergoes variations, [and] turns into a bird to celebrate

the emotion and fantasy of a flight.” The double skinned, steel shell of Terminal 3 is perforated with

hexagonal skylights that indeed give an attractive airiness to the massive structure’s exterior and

create a spectacular luminosity throughout the interior. Under a ceiling of rolling honeycomb layers

are 250 polycarbonate tree-like structures that mask air conditioning and electric lighting units while

complementing the architects’ organic theme. Studio Fuksas has broken away from standardized

airport architecture to create a unique multi sensorial design experience that clearly states China’s

desire to commission large scale, high profile projects that increase the country’s architectural wealth.

pour devenir le 4e aéroport de Chine. Avec l’efficacité déjà démontrée pour le centre de congrès la Fiera de Milan

– dessiné en trente jours et construit en vingt-sept mois – le Studio Fuksas a bâti l’aéroport en seulement trois ans.

� Terminal 3 can service up to 45 millions passengers a year, thereby increasing its capacity by 58 percent

and making it the fourth busiest airport in China. Following their record of designing the Fiera in Milan in just 30 days

and building it in 27 months, Studio Fuksas built the airport in just three years.

L’inspiration du nid d’abeilles est omniprésente : de la forme des stands commerciaux

aux surfaces alvéolées en acier inoxydable ou le sol en granit poli. Les colonnes ont été effilées

à leurs bases pour alléger l’espace. Les perforations tridimensionnelles au plafond changent

de forme selon le point de vue du spectateur accentuant ainsi la fluidité visuelle.

� The honeycomb theme is repeated throughout: from the ceilings and walls to the large

honeycombs that serve as retail boxes, down to the stainless steel surfaces and polished

granite floors that reflect and project the motives from the ceiling. Columns were tapered

at the base to reduce their obstructiveness. The three dimensional perforations in the ceiling

change appearance depending on the viewer’s standpoint and create a visual flow.

A light structure, a brilliant space
