FRENCH IMMERSION AT SASKATOON PUBLIC SCHOOLSFrench Immersion is a program designed for students whose first language is not French. The program uses French as the primary language of instruction and communication in the school setting to enable students to acquire functional language skills.

The goals of Saskatoon Public Schools’ French Immersion program are to:

• offer a comprehensive French education allowing for the personal development of students, and

• increase French language learning competence while also developing students’ English skills.

The French Immersion program aims for students to communicate effectively in Canada’s two official languages. Upon completing the program, students are able to:

• pursue post-secondary education/training in both French and English,

• pursue employment in French and English, and

• possess an understanding of global perspectives on cultures and peoples, including their own.

The approximate percentage of instruction in French through K-12 French Immersion is as follows:

• 100%—Kindergarten to Grade 1 • 75%—Grade 2 to 8 • 50%—Grade 9 to 12

TIPS FOR PARENTS Parents do not need to speak French in order to enroll their children in French Immersion. Most parents have little or no French language skills. While teachers foster students’ language learning at school, parents can also support their child’s learning at home:

• encourage your child throughout their learning journey, especially during the initial fall term when students are learning the basics of a new language,

• engage your child with meaningful language opportunities at home by reading, viewing and listening to materials in French, and

• recognize your child’s accomplishments to build their confidence for tackling new challenges.

A chance to learn a second language can open many job opportunities and chances to be a part of future experiences.

Saskatoon Public Schools offers a Kindergarten to Grade 8 elementary French Immersion program. French Immersion students learn French and English and follow provincial curricula. Students generally enter the program in Kindergarten or Grade 1. The language of instruction is primarily French in Kindergarten to Grade 2. Utilizing the new provincial curricula for early learners, our French Immersion program maintains a strong focus on student identity and language development while fostering students’ achievement in multiple subjects. The English Language Arts program is not formerly introduced until Grade 3.

In Grades 3-8, students apply their literacy and language skills to support and further their learning. Once students have learned to read in French, they apply this skill to continue to explore the language and build vocabulary, they communicate orally with purpose and write to explain their thoughts and learning. The ability to speak, read and write is applied in all subject areas and enables students to continue to learn

the French language in the context of curricular subjects. Saskatoon Public Schools has six dual-track elementary schools offering parallel English and French programs. The program schools are:

• École Alvin Buckwold School, • École College Park School, • École Forest Grove School, • École Lakeview School, • École River Heights School, and • École Victoria School.

Saskatoon Public Schools has one elementary school, École Henry Kelsey, that offers a single-track French Immersion program.

ELEMENTARY FRENCH IMMERSION

“J’aime le français parce que je peux parler avec ma grand-mère.”

“I like French because I can speak French with my grandma.”

“J’aime le français parce que c’est chouette et amusant.”

Saskatoon Public Schools is proud to offer Saskatchewan’s only Late French Immersion program at:

• École Alvin Buckwold School (Grade 6) • École College Park School (Grade 7) • École Forest Grove School (Grade 6) • École Henry Kelsey (Grade 6 and 7)

Late French Immersion allows students to begin immersive second language study at a later age. Students enter the program in Grade 6 and will be able to successfully graduate with a bilingual diploma upon completing Grade 12.

Students in Late French Immersion have a unique opportunity. Students in Grade 6 are fully immersed and learn the foundations of the French language using their established thinking skills.

Often, they are learning language equivalents to begin to express themselves in French. Later in Grade 6, students no longer think in equivalents but begin to think in French once they have acquired a sufficient language base. Afterwards, they continue to explore the language, build vocabulary, communicate orally with purpose, and write to explain their thoughts and learning. The ability to speak, read, and write in French is applied in all subject areas and enables students to continue to learn the French language in multiple subjects. All subject areas are taught in French except for English Language Arts.

In Grade 8, the elementary and Late French Immersion students join together to form one cohesive class. At the end of Grade 8, all students are prepared to move forward with their French language studies at the collegiate level.

Late French Immersion is a great program that everybody should consider. I decided to join because I wanted a challenge and also because of the opportunities it will give me. In the future I hope to travel and work abroad in French.

French Immersion at the collegiate level builds on students established language skills while also building competency in curricular subjects. To maintain their French Immersion status in high school and to be recognized as bilingual on their diploma, students are required to complete a minimum of 12 credits in French in Grades 10, 11 and 12. The necessary courses include three French Language Arts courses. The other nine French credits can be in the remaining areas of study or electives that are taught in French.

“Le programme d’immersion française présente aux jeunes une opportunité éducative d’apprendre le français en milieu scolaire. L’idée fondamentale du programme est d’apprendre à comprendre la langue et peu à peu utiliser la langue pour communiquer. Le programme se base sur une approche communicative ou les matières d’école sont intégrées selon des contextes authentiques. Nos jeunes jouent, chantent, apprennent leurs alphabets et les bases de la lecture et l’écriture indépendante, et font des activités tous en français.”

“The French Immersion program offers learners an educational opportunity to learn French in a school context. The foundational approach to the program is to first understand the French language and then to begin to use it to communicate. The program is based on a communicative approach to language learning where school subject areas are integrated into authentic contexts. Our learners play, sing, learn their alphabets and build a foundation for independent reading and writing skills and activities—all in French. ”
