From the Potentate’s Desk by 2020 Potentate I.S. Carl Thompson

A hearty thank-you to all who have been making the most of these challenging times by helping freshen up our Shrine Temple with new, modern colors for Harrington Hall and fresh paint throughout. When we finally put this virus behind us, we will have a tremendous place to once again hold the Crab Feed, Fight Night, the Super Bowl, Wild Game Dinner, and many more!

I want to reflect for a moment on Independence Day. It’s not called July 4th any more than Christmas is called December 25th. Independence day is our most important American holiday. I want to quote the Mayor of Sandy in a recent

statement after Governor Brown cancelled his city’s fireworks display under threat of heavy fines.

“Independence Day is more than fireworks and ice cream. It is the spark that ignited the most revered democracy in the history of the world. We celebrate because without it, we would have remained under the thumb of our oppressors and would have never inspired democracy and freedom in so many places around the globe. Without it, there would be no Constitution or Bill of Rights. Without it, we would not enjoy the liberty and freedom we have today. Or at least the liberty and freedom we are supposed to have.” - Mayor Stan Pulliam

I think that echoes a lot of sentiment I’m hearing from the Nobility. We are all wrestling with balancing safety demands from authorities we may or may not trust, against our constitutionally guaranteed rights of assembly, speech, and association.

Brother Benjamin Franklin once said: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” It’s one of my favorite historical quotes.

I want to encourage the Nobility to have conversations about how this has impacted your life, liberty, and your pursuit of happiness. How do you feel? Are you fearful? Are you frustrated? Neither is wrong. The only thing that would be wrong is not letting your brothers know how you’re feeling - it will help with stress and depression that are also a serious health risk with our current situation. I am greatly relieved to have conversations with brothers and friends. Whatever you’re feeling, you’re not alone, and will find a sympathetic ear if you only pick up the phone.

As we move toward re-opening, remember that participation in our great fraternity is voluntary. If you’re comfortable, come and join. If you’re not, we’ll find a way for you to participate over video-conference. The choice is yours. That’s what freedom and liberty are about.

May the Great Architect of the Universe continue to watch over us as we celebrate our Independence Day.

Chaplain’s Report by Noble Steven Levin

I was hoping to prepare this report in a post pandemic period of time. Alas, this was not to be. The Covid 19 Virus is persistent in it’s ravaging and from what the media has been telling us, it seems to be taking a path towards a secondary spike. Perhaps, the desire to return to a state of normalcy too quickly is at fault. Maybe discounting sage advice to don suitable face masks played a part in bringing us to this point. It is all conjecture and hopefully, those upon whose labors we are relying to find solutions will succeed sooner than later.

The times are indeed dire and we need to keep our faith strong. If nothing else, we should learn from these times of sickness combined with the turmoil we witness everyday. All the protesting, marching, rioting, and confrontations taking place almost daily are certainly real. I am puzzled as to how any of it will further the quest for peace, love, and equality. We must dig deeply to find the answers to all these questions and put what we learn into effect immediately.

It often takes a large dose of reality to remind us of the Masonic tenets of how we are supposed to conduct our lives. And those lives are too short not to make the most of them. I came to the realization as I sit here writing this report, that in the very short time since I was assigned the duties of Chaplain, we have lost more than fifteen Nobles to the Black Camel’s visits. Most notably, our recent loss of Noble Chris Woolcock. Only to have his passing lead the list in reverse of Gary Punkin Bowers, Wallace Wally Alexander, Tony Taylor, A Reinold ANderson, Robert Murray, Lloyd Peterson, Floyd Rewey, Don Turner, Job H. York, Noble Keist, George L Eldrerdge, and Kenji Yaguchi, In addition to those Nobles who are with the G.A.O.T.U. We have recently been notified of Black Camel visits to Noble Ernest Layton 2018, Noble William L. Flatt 2018, Noble Fred Hanson 2017.

In the past, it became customary to send cards to the bereaved. My feeling is a visit to the family, or at the very least, a phone conversation during which I can offer our combined sincere condolences along with a reassurance that we are present, willing and able to be of as much assistance as possible if needed is greatly appreciated.

I remain your humble Chaplain.

Oldest living Shriners Hospital for Children Patient turns 103. by Shriners International

Irene Hand Roberts just turned 103 and as far as we know, she is the oldest living Shriners Hospitals for Children patient! Irene was born on April 28, 1917, at her grandmother’s restaurant and boarding hotel in McLaughlin, South Dakota.

In July 1923, at the age of 6, Irene developed what was called infantile paralysis, but is now known as polio. The Hand family and local doctors tried many remedies to help Irene, but they were all unsuccessful. Irene’s luck changed when a small town horse-and-buggy doctor named Dr. Twining, who by chance was a Shriner, referred Irene to the newly opened Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Minnesota, thus beginning Irene’s long and very hard road to recovery.

Irene spent many months at the Shriners Hospital in Minnesota. Her right leg recovered, but her right arm never did. Irene never let having a paralyzed right arm slow her down, though.

Back home Irene had to work very hard to catch up, as she had missed her entire second-grade year. With only one good arm, she experienced many challenges. Yet as time went on, Irene adjusted to her new life and learned how to do things differently.

In 1930, Irene’s father moved the family to Miles City, Montana, after finding work as a railroad policeman for the Milwaukee Railroad. Irene was

a determined young woman. After graduating from high school, she was in the first graduating class at the new Eastern Montana College in Billings, Montana, where she earned her teaching degree. After graduating, Irene taught school for one year in a one-room school in Ismay, Montana.

Irene met and married Byron Roberts when she was 21, and they have eight children spread out over 22 years. Irene has quite a few grandchildren, and two of her grandsons and one great-grandson played in the Montana East-West Shrine Football game! The family feels this is one way they have given back for the care Irene received from Shriners Hospital.

Greeters By Noble Don Slezak

Well Greeters let us try again to have a meeting. It appears things will be opened up more by July. On a good day we probably wouldn’t have 25 people show up so we wouldn’t be breaking any laws anyway. Let’s try for the 14th of July at the Shrine Center at 6 pm. No potluck and bring your own drink. We don’t have a cabinet to call our own anymore.

The agenda is all about the golf tournament. We will work out all the details at the meeting. I feel confidant that we will have a good turnout and a good time is guaranteed. After all, everyone should be rested up and ready to go. Plus its outside on a nice day with a good lunch and prizes. What more could anyone ask for?

Get your team together. Get sponsors and door prizes. With nobody having meetings this is going to difficult but not impossible. I’m certain you are up to the task.

If you have a printer for our signs bring it to the meeting.

Since this is the 75th Annual Al Kader Golf Tournament let’s make it special. Remember August 13th is always nice and sunny and perfect for golf. With a shotgun start at 9 am it will be perfect.

For all Clubs and Units send in your Sponsor fee as soon as possible. If you are looking for a fund raiser all but one hole is open for a game of your choice. Pick a hole and pick a game. If you need help call me and we can work out the details.

The Potentates Salute is September 26, 2020.

If you have any questions or need forms please call or email me: 503 708-4872, [email protected].

8 Al Kader Oasis - July 2020

by Dereesa Reid, Administrator of Shriners Hospitals for Children - Portland

The changes at the Portland Shriners Hospital are almost daily as we adapt to the new normal with COVID-19. I am so impressed with how our entire team has adapted to all the new requirements for reopening our hospital!

As always, the safety of our patients and employees are our top priority. As the Pacific Northwest begins to reopen, our physicians, registration staff, and clinic teams are working hard to fill up our clinics – and our patients are certainly returning! However, as we all know, our world is a different place right now. Patients and families are having a different experience at the hospital than before the virus – there are floor markings that encourage families to social distance between one another, and our staff are serving patients more rapidly in order to reduce the amount of time spent in the waiting room. Our Environmental Services team are working tirelessly to ensure that our building is clean by sanitizing commonly touched surfaces throughout the day, and the cafeteria has implemented social distancing between the tables. Of course, staff, patients and families are all abiding by the Universal Masking Policy, and everyone is screened for COVID-19 symptoms upon arrival to the hospital. Oregon State’s epidemiologist Dean Sidelinger has said that all counties in Oregon will remain in Phase 2 until the fall, and possibly even longer. With all of that said, we are staying hopeful and we know this won’t be forever!

In closing, I want to express thanks to the Shriners and all of the ladies groups who support us! We can’t wait for the day when we can once again open our doors for volunteers and events. I’d like to share a special note of gratitude to our sewing ladies (from Daughters of the Nile), employees and countless other donors who have sewn and donated cloth masks to our hospital.

Tualatin Valley Shrine Club by Noble Herb Richardson

Excitement filled the air on Friday, May 1st, when Tillamook County Shriners held their first ever unstated virtual meeting. The April stated meeting

was canceled because of the Potentate’s order in conjunction with the Grand Master of Mason’s edict in compliance with the governor’s mandated physical distancing and business closing order necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virtually, at the meeting were President Ted Johnson, 1st Vice President Sterling Hanakahi, Treasurer Jesse Exton, Secretary Carey Huckaba, Member Norm McLaren and Member Bill Dorsett.

Inasmuch as it was an unstated meeting the agenda was discarded and the regular order of business was dispensed with.

With no further business to deliberate, the meeting was adjourned.

Below is a facsimile of those virtually attending the May 1st Tillamook County Shrine Club unstated Meeting. Pictured, (Left to Right) Treas. Jesse Exton, VP Sterling Hanakahi, Pres. Ted Johnson, Member Norm McLaren and Member Bill Dorsett. Not shown was Secty. Carey Huckaba who took the virtual facsimile.

Al Kader Patrol by Past Captain Lou Westwick

Patrol has not had a meeting at the Shrine Center since April. We have had a virtual GoToMeeting once and have not had another one since. All our Nobles are safe at home and getting bored I would imagine. Looking down the road to recovery hopefully we can get back to doing something again. We congratulate our Past Potentate Nobel Greg Jenkins on his election to Deputy Grand Master of Masons in Oregon. We all know that Greg will be doing an excellent job in that position the following year.

Captain Dennis Harris has some new ideas for our parades in the future. We just need to have a meeting in person at the Shrine Center in the future. This has been a trying year for the Shrine and the country in general. I, as a volunteer at the Shrine Hospital have been told to stay at home until further notice by Imperial orders from Tampa along with all the other volunteers at the Hospital.

Our Grand Master Michael J. McGuyer has an edict out that you can read on the Grand Lodge Website along with Governor Brows web site https://govstatus.egov.com/OR-OHA-COVID-19

Patrol is planning on having a meeting in July with everyone abiding by the new edict and proper use of PPE and or social distancing.

Welcome to our newest Noble by Mark C. Phillips, Assistant Rabban

On June 22, 2022, Al Kader conducted a cold sands shortly before its June Stated Meeting. Don Morrison became a Noble of the Mystic Shrine and is Al Kader’s first new creation of 2020. He looks forward to attending the Ceremonial in October.

Don is a Navy veteran and lives in Waldport, Oregon. He is a longtime, active member of the American Legion. Don became a Master Mason in 2019. He currently serves as Junior Deacon of Newport Lodge No. 85 in Newport, Oregon.

Parade Kudos by Jay Carey, Director of Units

I want to extend my personal as well as Temple thanks for those Nobles and Ladies of the various Clubs and Units that attended the Parade yesterday in Tillamook. I believe that we had a unique experience with the static display and the spectators driving past. The exuberance and smiles from everyone made the day worthwhile. The FEZ was on full display and we received numerous kudos from the spectators.

As of now this is the only parade we have until we receive more info on Waldport (sometime in September) and then we have Burns on September 12th, and then Veterans Day Parades November 11th.

I am asking that any Unit or Club that is planning on or considering going to Burns for the September 11-14 event and parade to let me know by the 25th of July so I can get the application into the organizers.

Thanks again and stay safe and healthy.

Al Kader Classified Ads by Terry Griffith, Assistant Rabban

Occasionally, your Temple is in need of assistance in locating someone who can help in a certain area, trying to purchase an item or looking for a new home for some treasure that we have found in our dungeons (or maybe just the shop and storage areas). To help us with this, we will begin an advertising area in the Oasis to bring this to the Nobilities attention.

Office Help Needed – Your Shrine office is need of a few hours of help, in finishing up inventory and working of creating packets for our Fall Ceremonial. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Sarah at the Shrine Office- 503-682-4420.

Painters Needed – Your Shrine Center is in need of people who are interested in helping paint. We have several areas that we would like to “refresh” and could use your help. Times and days are very flexible and would work diligently on maintaining social distancing. Contact Terry at 503-910-2162 for coordination.

Lawn Mower Needed – Do you have a lawn mower that you really done need anymore? We could use one at

the Shrine Center to help with the maintenance of the grounds. Please make sure that it is in good working condition.

Cabinet Maker. We are in need of someone who has experience with cabinetry. This includes creating and repairing as well as general woodworking. Duties could also include moving existing cabinets and sitting them in place at a different location. Please contact CR Terry at 503-910-2162.

Shelving Needed. Looking for shelving for our inside storage area. More of the heavy duty type to hold heavier items.
