At the end of the day you’re spending loads of money on your degree so make sure you start off with flying colours and invest in the books. In fact, it should be your absolute first priority if you’re getting a student loan through. If you go to your subject briefings during freshers week, they’ll fill you in with what you need!

4.BRING YOUR CAMERA If you haven’t done so already, invest in a decent camera! There’s plenty of Kodak moments to come so make sure you capture them all!

5.GET NETWORKING Try to use websites such as www.yougofurther.co.uk and Facebook to meet people on your course before you’ve even had your first lecture! Trust us, Its a great way to break into uni with ease.

6. REMEMBER IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS Especially if you’re going to be far from home, remember things such as passports. other ID and important documents or letters that you may need for registration. It’s possible you’ll start job hunting soon, so you may need your National Insurance etc.

7.GET WISE Learn how to use a washing machine, a cooker, a hoover etc before arrival! Practise making some meals that you can afford on a student budget and cook without any hassle!

8.GET FINANCIALLY WISE, TOO! Be sure to open a student bank account and confirm that you student loan is sorted before registration. Make sure your loan will cover accomodation, and if you plan to live off campus try to contact Roehampton accomodation ASAP!

Remember to pack light! You don’t want to be unpacking for hours during Freshers week and you certainly wouldn’t want to be anti-social, would you?

10. IT SEEMS LONG, BUT IT’S VERY USEFUL Ensure you’ve read all the paper work, contracts etc before joining us! You don’t want to be out of the loop when you get here. Make sure you know where you’re going! Check out www.roehampton.ac.uk and www.roehamptonstudent.com

THE AVERAGE JOE PERSPECTIVE:

I’m Chris, I’m twenty years old, and I have just finished my first

year at Roehampton. Fresher’s Week, for me, was a great way

to make friends both in and out of my accommodation, and

acted as a great icebreaker for the awkward first week, and

something in which I made some amazing memories and formed

friendshi ps that have lasted the whole year.

Firstly I picked up a fresher’s pass, although it’s around £40, it’s

great value for money and gets you in to all the events hosted

by the Uni and it’s definitely worth not missing out on. There

are events nearly every day for the entire week, and since there’s

no lectures to wake up for it’s certainly worth making the most

of it. Highlights for me included the ‘Back To School Bash’, which

was basically the cliché combination of old school uniforms

and alcohol which everybody knows and loves. The Tube Line

Treasure Hunt was a great way to meet people as you had

to work in teams, and, being from the countryside, the perfect

opportunity to find out how to get around in London. Clapham

Grand always puts on a good night, and it’s good to see the

Uni doesn’t limit events just to the campus, and utilises the city.

I was also impressed by the free bus service that runs to and

from the Uni.

Fresher’s fair is where the different groups and societies set up

stalls and entice you to join them. It’s great fun and it’s wise

to join as many as possible, even if it’s just for the freebies, but

be warned some may charge a joining fee. The Film Society

is always screening classic films, and it’s great to go relax and

watch a film with your friends after lectures. Club Foot is an

event that runs every two weeks throughout the year, but during

Fresher’s Week it’s outside in the marquee and was great last

year as the sun decided to stay. I kept my distance from the

Roller Disco in Vauxhall, because of a bad history of bruised

bums. Of course, in between all these events, the bars are open,

and drinking with your new floor mates is a great way to

spend your afternoon. The week ends with the infamous Bop

held at The Union. It’s also an event than runs throughout the

year, and each time it has a different theme, and is a great

opportunity to dress up like a fool and let off some steam.

Overall though, it was an unforgettable experience and hopefully

I can get a ticket for this year!

Chris Davis

THE MATURE STUDENT PERSPECTIVE:

As I write this I have just completed my third year in Drama,

Theatre and Performance Studies. I am a mature student, a

single mother of two teenage children, and this sets me apart. I

remember my Fresher’s Week like it was yesterday, yet the sea

change I’ve experienced places it a lifetime ago. To say that I

was nervous does not cover the apprehension felt as the week

approached. I was looking forward to my classes and getting

started, but I had Fresher’s Week to contend with.

I knew that as an ‘older’ person I would stand out amongst

the mainly younger crowd. When you are new at university,

self-consciousness is inevitable until you meet your ‘peeps’ and

know where you are. Imagine how it feels double when you

know for a fact that you will actually stand out, it’s not just your

imagination. It was because of this that I was quite looking

forward to meeting my fellow mature students, find out what

social events were planned for me and get my teeth into having

some fun and relaxing with new friends before classes began.

My week began with the mass induction I attended at the

Digby Stuart Chapel. I listened to the then RSU President talk

about the upcoming year, to the Activities Officer tell us about

the parties, to the head of security tell us about fire alarms

and his dog. But hey! Where was the information I needed,

why was I none the wiser about how I would meet like-minded

people?

I attended the Fresher’s Fair, I got a free calendar, someone

handed me condoms, and I got an ‘I love Boris’ pin, but I still

had no opportunity to meet others like me, or information on

how to find them. I attended the get to know you reception

put on by my department. This is the killer: I was late so

everyone was there except the faculty, when I walked in everyone

stopped talking and heads turned expectantly. OMG!!! They

thought I was faculty! I saw the humour in it and went on to

have a really nice afternoon. To make a long story short, what

I learned was: at university, age is not that important, everyone

is there for the same reason, and though I’m on my own in

my year, I’m not really. I’ve made friends easily, and am most

grateful to those in my year for never making me feel like an

‘other’ for being significantly older than they are. But, that doesn’t

mean that you don’t have unique requirements as an older

student, and also as a student parent. I could have benefited

greatly from, and enjoyed myself more if there had been a

dedicated and consistent support to me in my first year.

In my second year I ran for and won the position of Mature

Student’s Officer on the RSU. I always had a keen interest in

student politics, but my main motivation was to build a society

on campus that can offer not just social events, but also support

and a voice to the RSU and the university for the older student,

and the student parent. Being involved in my students’ union

benefited my student experience a great deal and I got to build

on the social system that was not there to receive me in my

Fresher’s Week.

Katherine Stanley

THE OFF CAMPUS PERSPECTIVE:

Starting university is quite a daunting prospect. You will be

making new friends, exploring a new city and possibly taking

on new responsibilities. It is also likely that at some point you

will be required to attend lectures and write essays, but let’s not

worry about that at the minute. For the first week of the next

three years you will be moving in and meeting the rest of your

flat. Unless of course you are not moving into halls, in which

case you are in the same position as I was this time three

years ago.

Not to worry though, integrating into campus life is made

much easier with events that run throughout Fresher’s week as

well as societies that run all year such as People and Planet,

the Allotment Society and the food Co-operative (for more

information pop along to the Fresher’s Fair).

What was my off campus experience like? Well, for the first

week I was commuting an hour and half across London each

day trying to find housemates and make new friends. Within a

week of Roehampton organized events, I was no longer walking

into a club or gig on my own, in fact, several people I met at

Bands Night I have now lived with for two years.

My advice? Attend the events that interest you most and try and

talk to everyone, at least you’re in the same position. And as

daunting as starting university seems, graduating is a much more

intimidating prospect.

MEMOIRS OF A FRESHERWELCOME TO ROEHAMPTONIt’s a cliché turn of phrase, But for many students, the thought of Freshers week can be quite a scary one, and with three whole years in front of you, the last thing you need is tangled nerves in a brand new environment. Fear not though, we’ve put together a few first hand accounts, from a variety of students; from your Average Joe who lives on campus and enjoys his or her lie-ins, to the off campus student who commutes regularly, right through to a Mature student dealing to cope with even more responsibilities. We hope their ti ps help you to make the most out of your Freshers week here at Roehampton, most of all though, try not to be scared, take baby steps, make amazing friendshi ps and make it the best week of your lives to date!

Being your union, we understand

that balancing your academic

and social life, or life in general

can get pretty tough. That’s

why each year we produce our

own yearly diary! As well as

being a standard diary, it’s

also full of information about Roehampton

and RSU specific information of course, giving you a

beginners guide to the union, key dates, maps, travel

information and useful contacts that you may need

during your time here. You can pick up your copy of

the diary for free at the Freshers Fair on Friday 24th

warned!

WEBSITE/NEWS FEEDS

The website is the place to keep up to date with us.

It’s here that you’ll find information and announcements

as soon as the words out. Those who register to the

website will also be sent a weekly newsletter called

‘Funsize Fresh’.We’re always working towards making

the website accessable, useful and user friendly. This

year will be no different as we intend to generate

more traffic towards the website by making use

of news feeds and social networking sites such as

Facebook and Twitter, to keep students even more up

to date in the daily running of your union.

Make sure you find and follow us online at…

RSVIEW

RSView is the name

given to our visual

community which enables

students to access video based content

concerning the union. RSView is a relatively new

venture for us, built with the primary aim to give

societies and smaller factions within the union an

opportunity to raise their profile, effectively offering

them a free means of publicity via the RSU website

and a chance to take ownershi p over RSU media.

Over the coming year, RSView will be the place to

find out about our exciting campaigns and activities.

ENGAGEMENT

A new element of the communications zone is

‘engagement’. Although we do a lot of great things

up at RSU towers, in the past, it’s not been our

best party trick. Nevertheless it’s something we are

going push further emphasis on over the next year.

Engaging with students involves everything from

us communicating with you, to encouraging you to

communicate with us, and to take more ownershi p

and direction within the union wherever possible.

This can range from giving us feedback to getting

involved and running in our annual RSU elections.

For example, last year we conducted our first

everCommunications Survey, which not only told us

how you currently hear from us, but how you wish

to hear from us in the future, and what you most

want to hear about. Engagement isnot only just about

feedback though, it’s about activitism and collectivism

and in short, getting involved!

COMMUNICATIONSHi, my name is Anant Naik and I’m your Vice President Communications & Engagement up in the RSU over the next year. The

Communications Zone is responsible for keeping you in the loop with everything we do as your students’ union, for you, the

students, so naturally we rely on high volumes of student involvement as well as news and information direct from our base on

Froebel College.

Primarily, it is my role to ensure that all union activities and concerns are publicized to the student body. This includes everything

from advertising academic support and student services on offer within Roehampton, through to the vast variety of societies and

sports the activities zone has to offer, or the social events that the RSU host throughout the coming year.

Another vital ingredient of the communications zone is democracy and representation, we work to ensure this for you by making

use of

established mediums such as the student newspaper ‘Fresh’ as well as newsletters, flyers and other avenues which promote a

diverse range of student-driven content, as well as embarking on new audio visual wherever necessary. I am very excited about the future of the RSU

and look forward to working with as many of you as possible over the coming year!

Hello, and welcome to Roehampton University! My name is Becky Aston, and I’m your Vice President of Welfare

& Community within the RSU. The Welfare department looks at helping you during your time at Roehampton to

make sure that you really do get the most out of the University experience. If you have any problems, on any

level, I am here to help you find a practical and sensible solution. The Welfare Department is an informative

based service, which provides up to date and useful information through its contacts with a number of other

support services within the University, as well as through other external organisations.

I am here to help and assist you with your time at Roehampton, and to deal with any problems that you

may encounter, so feel free to come up to the RUS for a chat. My job is to not only make sure that you

get the most out of your time at Roehampton, but to also represent you to the University, local community and

nationally, so that the student experience can really develop and be enhanced for future years. Within RSU

there is the potential to have an impact on the way that your student experience is shaped by being active and getting

involved, with so many opportunities to do so, whether this is through campaigns or events, or just being a pro-active and vocal member of the

community. Good luck over the next year, and I hope to see you around!

WELFARE & COMMUNITY

WELFARE

One of the aims of the Welfare & Community

Zone is to make sure that support is offered and

promoted to students who may have issues during

their time at Roehampton, and to make sure that

any issues are dealt with in a professional and

confidential manner. There is no problem, issue or

concern too big or too small. I am here to help,

and provide you with the best welfare service

available. Along with working in conjunction

with a number of support services within the

University, we also look to make sure that we

can provide for a number of welfare needs, with

attack alarms, free condoms, free pregnancy tests,

free stop smoking, safe drinking and drugs advice,

along with personal safety information, financial

support and advice, as well as mental health

resources.

COMMUNITY

One of the brilliant things about Roehampton is

its diverse community, and this is something that

we really try and celebrate. Community is one of

the biggest aspects of the University which really

enhances the student experience. There are various

different communities which

are formedwithin Roehampton, whether that is in

the College that you are assigned to/ live on, or

the academic department in which you study, and

I work closely with a number of different links in

each of these to make sure that each group of

students really get the most out of belonging to

the community, and that through this they can get

the full University experience.

The community aspect of RSU is new, and it

recognises that the student population is made

up of a whole range of students, such as

undergraduates, post graduates, part-time

students, full-time students, mature students,

student parents, international students, disabled

students and black and minority ethnic students to

name a few. All groups of studentshave different

needs, and it is my job to make sure that those

needs are met. If you feel that there is something

that RSU should be doing, please let me know.

One of the biggest parts of the Welfare and

Community Zone is campaigning on a number of

different topics which look at issues which affect

students on a regional, national and international

basis, with the aim of engaging, educating and

informing students, as well as implementing

change.

KEY CAMPAIGNS IN THE ZONE

* S.H.A.G. Week

ACTIVITIESHello one and all, welcome to Roehampton University. My name is Natasha Blake and I am the Vice President Activities in the

Student Union. I Graduated in BA Drama and Theatre Studies two years ago, during my years of studies Iwas also elected as one

of the RSU’s Entertainments Officers. I have also been involved with the Roehampton women’s rugby team as well as broadening my

acting skills as a member of the Roehampton Players. In my last year I decided to Run for VP Activities and a year one I am still

enjoying the Role that allows me to give back to the students of Roehampton.

My role within the union consists of running three main areas; Societies, Sports and ‘Give it a Go’. These areas are available for

all Roehampton University students, and provide a wide range of involvement for enhancing the body and mind. Within Societies

you can really engage in social activity, creating new skills and developing relationshi ps with other students and staff. If a society

doesn’t exist and you want to create one, you can initiate a new club, society or event through me and the RSU. Sports is a

great way to strengthen your physical mind, enhance skills and develop a relationshi p working in a team, there are plenty of

teams to choose from and each has a strong commitment to achieving the best. Our partners at Sport Roehampton are here to provide you with as much support

as possible. The ‘Give it a Go’ scheme was set up to provide students with the opportunity to partici pate in different areas of activities, there are four categories;

Activities, Volunteering and Tri ps Away and Keep Fit which is Run by our Partners at Roe-Active Gym, each providing a vast range of events and Activities like tri ps

to Amsterdam, learning a new language and volunteering in the community.

SOCIETIES

There are around 35

societies in the university

and that number will be

growing with students that

are interested in starting

up new ones, such as the

Allotment society and debating society. There

has been great success with societies, especially

with members of the Film society, People and

Planet and the Roehampton Players always

providing socials and extra activities and events

for members to get involved with. Any student

can start a new society; they can cater for all

different tastes. Societies are a great Way to

socialise and hang with like minded people in

an environmentthat is comfortable to you. All

societies at Roehampton are set up by students,

for students. At the End of the year we hold the

Societies Achievement Ceremony (SAC) in which

we Award clubs, societies and individuals for their

hard work and dedication throughout the year,

contributing to the success of Clubs and societies.

GIVE IT A GO!

Give it a Go is a great scheme that introduces a

variety of activities and opportunities for students

and staff to get involved in, something different

for those not necessarily up for partying all

the time. The Activities provided are easily

accessible and cater for different needs. Within

the (GIAG) Scheme there are four areas to cater

for all students,they are;

TRIPS AWAY: Providing a wide range of

exceptional priced tri ps for all, from day events

like London Zoo to long weekends away to

Amsterdam as well as evenings out to the theatre.

These tri ps are defiantly ideal for meeting new

people or doing something fun and exciting with

your friends. A tri p away is the best way to let

your hair down.

ACTIVITIES: This area provides a great way

to gain skills and broaden your options and

qualifications, not only are the activities fun and

appealing they range from cooking classes to

foreign language courses to adrenalin pumping

Pole dance Lessons, allowing you to gain an extra

hobby, meet new people and get a great sense of

achievement with a wide range of skills.

VOLUNTEERING: The University has a wide range

of volunteering opportunities for you to get

involved with in the local and surrounding

areas. This is a great way to gain

achievement certificates and provides

you with experience for a variety of

employment options in your future,

as well as the great satisfaction of

giving something back to society.There

are a variety of different charities

and organisations you can help out

with. You can access a variety of opportunities

that will suit your needs through the University

Jobshop. Volunteering is the way forward and

can be rewarding in different ways. Some of

the internal volunteering includes Raising and

Giving Week (RAG), the Right to Play Bike ride,

Roehampton 10k Run, and campaigns such as

Go Green week, National Volunteering week

the list goes on. There are plenty of external

opportunities each providing satisfaction in the

volunteering scheme.

KEEP FIT: Which is run by our partners at

ROEActive opens up a range of different Fitness

Classes that are accessible and fun as well as

giving you the flexibility to go to classes

that suit your needs. All classes are run by

qualified fitness instructors and come free with

developing over the last 3 years and

structure and provisions have never

been better. Sport is not just about

competing but about getting involved,

keeping healthy and making friends. Last

year our Women’s basketball team won the

Team of the Year Award due to outstanding

team spirit, commitment and morale, and Ana

Salomao won Sports Person of the year for

her outstanding contribution toward Sport

Roehampton management and development. I

look forward to an exciting new year of sport

and hope that you all enjoy yourselves

STUDENT SPORT

All student sports members at Roehampton

University are part of Sport Roehampton’s Athletic

Union, which has a vision of increased

partici pation and better provision accessible to

all, and aims to ach-ieve this vision with ongoing

development.

Sport Roehampton provides many benefits for

students, from team organisation, health and

wellbeing activities to vocational experience, skill

acquisition, job opportunities, elite performance

support services and a chance to meet a wide

variety of people.

The best way to sign up for Sport Roehampton

membershi p is at the Fresher’s Fair in Fresher’s

week. You can choose the sports you are

interested in, pay membershi p or simply ask

questions. Club captainswill be on hand to let

you have details of each sport.

In addition to signing up at Fresher’s Fair, this

can also be done in the RSU, ROEActive gym or

Sport and Wellbeing offices at any time

throughout the year.

We currently run a wide

range of sports teams

and clubs and offer the

opportunity and support to

accommodate new sports

clubs and all individual

sports. If you want to start

something new or bring your

sport to Roehampton then

just contact the Student Sport

Development Officer

(contacts below). Our student

sports programme currently includes the following

sports:

Athletics Badminton Basketball Cheerleading Fencing Football Gymnastics Hockey Karate Kick Boxing Netball Rowing Rugby Squash Swimming Table-Tennis Taekwondo Tennis Triathlon Ultimate Frisbee Volleyball

Most of our sports teams are entered in National

BUCS (British University and College Sport)

competitions and compete on

Wednesday afternoons in the 1st

and 2nd terms. We also enter

some recreational teams into

regional

competitions and we are involved in a number

of national projects. For example, we are working

with BUCS to promote student sport via social

networking and have been elected as one of 10

universities to be a football development university

and we are a High Performance centre for British

Fencing.

We hold several A.U social and fundraising

events throughout the year which is the perfect

chance for teams to mix and usually provide a

great night out. There are also several infamous

sporting events such as Frigby, Frugby and the

charitable Roehampton 10k Fun Run. One of the

biggest events of the year is the A.U Awards

dinner, where we reward and appreciate the

people who have really made a difference to our

time in sport at Roehampton.

MONDAY

•The Clapham Grand will be held once a month (the 2nd

Monday of the month) and will play host to our massive

club night, which we expect around 1000 of you guys to

attend, making these memorable nights! Guest DJs and Pas

will appear throughout the year and this London landmark

of a venue.

•Who needs Jongleurs or The Comedy Store when you’ve

got your own comedy night, Laugh Out Loud, right here

on campus?! This year we will again be teaming up

with Avalon, one of the biggest agencies on the comedy

scene, to ensure only the best acts are booked for your

enjoyment. Scores of great acts have graced the stage

over the last 3 years, including Alan Carr, Robin Ince, Jim

Jefferies, Simon Bird, Jack Whitehall and Isy Suttie to name

but a few! Held on the first Monday of every month, in

Monte Hall, Froebel.

TUESDAY

•2009/2010 saw the introduction of College Nights

on campus, which proved to be very popular and will

therefore continue in 2010/2011. Each respective College

Social Secretary will be in charge of organising these

events at your own social space on a weekly basis, so if

you have any ideas for a one off event you’d like to hold,

please speak to your College Social Sec and get involved!

WEDNESDAY

•Boasting a fully functional Travolta-esque flashing dance

floor. Putney’s Fez Club provides the perfect excuse to cut

a few shapes, make a fool of yourself and generally have

a laugh. The resident DJ employs an ‘anything goes’ policy

to provide the biggest and best mix of music all night

long. Requests taken in advance and on the night, if the

DJ has it we guarantee he will play it!

THURSDAY

•Over the past 6 years we’ve been running Bands Night

and have seen some great new acts come through The

Belfry Bar, the highlights being Air Traffic, The Rumble

Stri ps, White Lies, Little Boots, Les Incompetents, Special

Needs and The Thirst. Due to The Belfry being closed

down, we thought we’d lay Bands Night to rest with the

venue and launch a brand new night! Club Foot will

be held fortnightly in The Union and will be an Indie/

Alternative club night with a couple of top live acts

performing each week. DJs playing only the best in Indie,

Electro, Pop and good old Rock n Roll.

•When Club Foot isn’t on, we run Acoustic Night over at

Bar:Code, Whitelands to encourage budding singer song-

writers to get up and belt out their best. There is no

benchmark for talent and we encourage as many of you

to sign up as possible, whether you want to sing your own

little creations or cover a classic, anything goes! You can

sign up for a slot at Bar:Code in advance or simply turn

up on the night.

FRIDAY

•There should only be one thought

on your mind on a Friday night and

that is Bop, Bop, Bop! The Bop is the biggest regular night

on campus attracting around 800 party animals each

week. It’s a no frills night with drinks promos and fancy

dress themes (optional!) each week. The main room in

Monte Hall hosts resident DJs playing only the best pop

music with a spoonful of cheese thrown in throughout the

night, while The Union bar area sees resident DJs offer

something a little different playing Indie/ Electro, whilst

guest DJs drop in throughout the year. Cheap entry, cheap

drinks all night!

WEEKENDS

When it comes to partying on the weekends, we leave

that up to you! London is your oyster and there is so

much going on, there isn’t any point in starting to name

decent nights! We recommend checking online, the likes of

Time Out, Ents24 and The Guardian Guide are all great

websites. Finally, please always travel in a group and be

sure to check out travel links on page 24 to find out how

to head out and more importantly, how to get back! Have

fun!

Hi there!

My name is Jon Foley and I have been involved at Roehampton Uni for the last 9 years now, firstly as a student studying Marketing, through

to my current position as Entertainments Co-ordinator at Roehampton Students’ Union. My time as a Roehampton student was priceless and

has provided me with so many life experiences and has shaped me into who I am and what I now do.I have been involved with the RSU

since the end of my first year, initially as a DJ at the majority of events and then I was elected as one of five Entertainments Officers in my

3rd year of study. This voluntary position taught me valuable skills, both practical and social, and I have continued to build on these over the

last 6 years.

My role as Entertainments Co-ordinator is to essentially programme, organise and run RSU events both on and off the University campus for

the students of Roehampton. The main aims are to ensure you guys have the most amount of fun as possible during your time here and

to offer a programme of events to appeal to as many differing tastes as physically possible! As a students’ union we do try our hardest to

provide as varied a programme of entertainment as possible to cater for as many needs as possible, but as experience has often shown, it is not

easy to make every single student happy! This year’s team of officers and I will take on board any ideas that you may have and where possible will try to improve and adapt our

services. Most importantly of all, every RSU event or endorsed event is organised in a way to ensure the safest and most enjoyable atmosphere possible. We have worked hard on

our weekly programme of events over previous years, and now believe we have found a good balance of events to cater for as much of the dynamic student population as possible.

With a few major changes to bars and venues across the

site, RSU has adapted its programme of events to suit this

and with our brand new venue ‘The Union’ at Froebel,

we feel this will be an extremely exciting year ahead!

We look forward to seeing you all at RSU events! xx
