Writing Assignment for Summer Reading

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies

1.) Compare the two characters Ralph and Jack. Would you consider these boys leaders?

Why or why not? Why do some boys choose to follow Ralph? Why do some boys choose to

follow Jack?

Ralph the protagonist is the initial and natural leader! "n the other hand #a$% the

antagonist is an ad&enturous and fearless 'o( hungr( for meat! While the 'o(s originall( $hoose

Ralph #a$% gets tired of ta%ing orders and soon 'e$omes re'ellious! His idea is to ha&e fun and

%ill pigs not to stand around and %eep a fire going! #a$%)s idea of %illing pigs and tri'es attra$ts

man( 'o(s and soon all the 'o(s are su$$um'ed to the e&il and sa&ager( *ithin them!

The reason most of the 'o(s $hoose Ralph in the 'eginning is that he is +the 'o( *ith the

trumpet, and a$ts li%e a tea$her ma%ing all the 'o(s raise their hands and follo* rules! Ralph

also is a good leader ensuring the 'o(s that his dad is +a $ommander in the Na&( and that he)ll

$ome and res$ue them, -1./ and later on he tries to $omfort the litluns in sa(ing that the 'eastie

does not e0ist!

The reasons *h( the 'o(s $hoose to follo* #a$% later on are &er( different than the

reasons to follo* Ralph! or one #a$% alread( has a little +tri'e, going *ith his $hoir! He also

*ants to ha&e fun and em'ra$e freedom not li&ing in stri$t order! 2ut most of all he is fearless

of the 'eastie and *ants to %ill it! His idea of ha&ing a tri'e doing *ar dan$es and $hanting

+ Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” enti$e a lot of the 'o(s to 3oin his tri'e! #a$%

appears as a strong leader 'e$ause he appears manl( and ad&enturous 'ut he is reall( 3ust 'rute

and 'ar'ari$!

"&erall *hen the 'o(s are pi$%ing leaders the()re pi$%ing the lifest(le then *ant! The(

initiall( $hoose the orderl( and safe lifest(le *here the( might a$tuall( get sa&ed 'ut then &eer

off to #a$%)s lifest(le of %illing and 'ar'arism!

2.) Consider the conflicts in the story. Discuss at least two different kinds of conflict. !ote"

Do not limit your response to conflicts between characters only.)

5uring one of the meetings a small 'o( des$ri'es to the others a +sna%e6thing, he sa* at

night! At first the 'o(s thin% the litlun *as ha&ing a nightmare and tr( to dismiss the idea! This

doesn)t reall( help and most of the litluns are not onl( s$ared of not 'eing res$ued 'ut of 'eing

atta$%ed at night! Here la(s a pro'lem for Ralph *hi$h he tries to fi0 '( $omforting the litluns

'( 'uilding shelters and telling them that the 'eastie doesn)t e0ist! While Ralph is tr(ing to sa(

that there is not 'eastie #a$% sa(s that +*ere strong 7 *e hunt8 If there)s a 'east *e)ll hunt it

do*n8, -9:/! This is then follo*ed '( the formation of #a$%)s tri'e and the %illing of Simon and

Pigg(! If the 'eastie;Lord of the lies didn)t e0ist #a$% *ould ha&e limited reason to ma%e a

tri'e and %ill pigs thus no'od( *ould)&e died!

The 'o(s espe$iall( #a$% tend to pi$% on Pigg( $onstantl(! Pigg( is &er( $le&er and the

other 'o(s do not see it! This is mainl( 'e$ause his appearan$e sti$%s out from e&er('od( else!

The 'o(s *ill listen to a strong and leader6li%e 'o( not a fat 'o( *ith glasses! This ignoran$e

to*ards Pigg( is part of the ultimate do*nfall of the 'o()s so$iet(! or e0ample after Ralph

(ells +fire8, all of the 'o(s run up the hill and start a large 'onfire! Pigg( thin%s the()re a$ting

+li%e a pa$% of %ids, -<=/ and sa(s that the( need to ma%e shelter and ma%e a more managea'le

fire! No'od( espe$iall( Ralph and #a$% *ho ta%e a*a( the $on$h from Pigg( $are a'out his

ideas and $ontinue their *a( of life> ha&ing fun and em'ra$ing their freedom! Pigg( is

ultimatel( tr(ing to %eep the 'o(s so$iet( in one pie$e 'ut sin$e to the other 'o(s he is an

useless figure the( don)t listen to him and so$iet( falls apart!

#.) $ne of William %oldin&'s themes for the no(el is that society's defects stem from the

defects of inherent in human nature.* +,amine the (alidity of this statement and discuss at

least two specific e,amples from the no(el. -ou may consider e,plorin& this assertion as it

relates to the contemporary world.

We human nature are inherentl( a 'rutal sa&age and $orrupt spe$ies! Without

%no*ledge and so$iet( to 'ring us together *e fall apart and return to our 'ar'ari$ sel&es! This

thee is refle$ted in the 'oo% *hen Pigg()s %no*ledge and ad&i$e is ignored and the natural

sa&ager( *ithin the 'o(s $omes out! So$iet( $an onl( effi$ientl( run *hen demo$ra$( and

%no*ledge is present! This is refle$ted in the real *orld too! or e0ample if tea$hers didn)t

e0ist there *ould 'e no edu$ation thus so$iet( *ould $rum'le and return to its primiti&e state!
