1 Introduction
Introduction
Over the course of the next three days, you will use the pages (in order) to
the left to work your way toward an understanding of Frida Kahlo's life
and work. As you look at Frida Kahlo's art, reflect on your own emotional
reaction as well as what you already know about her life experiences and
cultural identity. Although you have yet to learn about her life, let's
practice. Look at the painting below, titled "Self Portrait with Monkeys".
Consider the following questions:
1. What do you assume about the artist's cultural origin?
2. What emotion is expressed in her face?
3. What are some elements of the painting about which you have
questions?
Now, turn and share your thoughts in groups of three or four. Listen and
take notes on the ideas you hear.
Once you are finished discussing (about 5-10 minutes), move on to page 2
Task.

Frida Kahlo
1 Introduction
Task
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter who was best known for
her self-portraits. During her life she suffered many tragedies, traveled
and experienced other cultures, and endured a tumultuous marriage with
Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. Her art reflected these experiences and
expressed her cultural identity. As you explore and learn about her life
and a few of her works, you'll choose from the following list of activity
options, in which you'll demonstrate what you've learned about Frida.
Prompt: How did Frida's life experiences and cultural identity shape her
as an artist?
Podcast
Video newscast presenting a synthesis of what you've learned from
the works you've explored
Formal essay or informative report
Imagine that you're going to paint a self-portrait. You want it to include
elements that reflect your cultural identity and any relevant experiences in
your life that have had a great influence on who you are. On the white
sheets of paper on the walls of the classroom, create your self portrait. Be
sure to give it a title and be ready to explain it to the class. Take about
10-15 minutes to do this.
Now that you understand what this lesson is about, move on to page 3 Process.

Process
Now you will read hereabout Frida's life and it's influence on her work. As
you read, consider the following questions, which you'll answer once
you're done. Write a well-developed paragraph for each question.
1. Why did Frida celebrate her birthday in 1910 instead of 1907? If you
were to choose a birthday for the same reason, which would you
choose and why?
2. Explain Frida's maternal struggle and her regard for Diego as her
"baby". Look at her painting "The Love Embrace". Read the article
"Frida Kahlo's Final Secret Revealed". Write a brief response to Frida
from the perspective of her physician, Dr. Leo Eloesser. Consider
what you want to express to her, considering the pain she expressed
to you in her own letters.
3. How did Frida treat her husband? How did he treat her? How did
she regard animals, children and her students? Use your own words
to describe her attitude toward the world and those around her.
Now that you're familiar with her life, explore Frida's drawing "The
Accident" here.Move the cursor over the drawing to explore the different
parts that make it up. Then, watch the accident scene from the film
"Frida" here.Consider the following question.
1. Having no previous experience with painting, what prompted Frida
to start? Think back on your own life. Was there any event that you
can imagine having inspired to you paint about it, either positive or

negative?
Click here to explore Kahlo's painting "Self-Portrait on the Bordeline
Between Mexico and the United States". Here, Frida is represented toeing
the line between the U.S. and Mexico, ancient culture and modernization,
restraint and rebellion, life and death. Look at how she depicts the two
flags. Write down some notes comparing these depictions and how they
reflect her experiences in the United States.
Now click here to read about "Self Portrait with Monkey". Reflect on the
following question.
Why does Frida paint such serious self-portraits? What was your facial
expression in your own self portrait? Why did you choose that expression?
You're finally ready for one of her most famous paintings, "The Two
Fridas"
1. Have you ever felt like you are two different people? Perhaps the one
that others see and the one that you keep concealed from others?
2. How do you compare the theme of dichotomy in this painting and
that of "Self-Portrait on the Borderline Between Mexico and the
United States"?
