H OT E L S Sun, Sea and Books!Welcome to the 2016 Sidmouth Literary Festival

Welcome to this year’s festival! We have got a

wonderful programme lined up for you, with some ‘Big Name’ speakers. Whatever your tastes, there is something here for everyone!

Bestselling authors include Dame Penelope Lively; Simon Weston (whose writing experiences were inspired by the Falklands War); Veronica Henry (top women’s fiction writer); Nicholas Evans (The Horse Whisperer); and the renowned thriller writer, Robert Goddard. Journalist Con Coughlin, who writes on foreign affairs for the Daily Telegraph, will also be here, along with local authors of international fame.

This year, we are also running a How To Get Published day for aspiring writers. Editors from Penguin and Pan Macmillan will be giving one-to-one advice, while Endeavour publishers

will be available to provide ideas about how to get your work into print. Don’t miss this fabulous opportunity!

In addition, there will be a poetry evening at Sidmouth Library, featuring Mantie Lister, the former Exeter bard.

And that’s not all! We have arranged for children’s authors to go into schools and talk about how they write stories. They will also be running imaginative writing workshops free of charge.

Our bookshop partner is Winstone’s and, we hope you agree, we have a great range of authors to tempt you in.

Our wonderful Sidmouth has a rich literary heritage. Over the years it has inspired writers such as Jane Austen, Beatrix Potter, R.F. Delderfield and many others. Let’s keep this tradition going. Our town deserves it.

Juliet Barker

JULIET BARKER is a distinguished biographer, medievalist and scholar. She is both a bestselling historian and a critically acclaimed expert on the Brontës. From 1983 to 1989 she was the curator and librarian of the Brontë Parsonage Museum. Her book, The Brontës: A Life in Letters, has just been updated and republished to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s birth.

PENROSE HALSON has been a modern languages teacher, headmistress of an eccentric ballet school, editor and writer of innumerable educational language magazines and children’s books, and master of a city livery company. Her mother sent her, aged 25 (in those days, on the shelf) to the Katharine Allen Marriage & Advice Bureau, to find a husband. She was introduced to interesting men, but did not marry any of them. Later she became proprietor of this Bureau, along with Heather Jenner’s Marriage Bureau (the subject of Marriages Are Made in Bond Street). Aged 48 she delighted her mother by marrying Bill, who had observed her talent for connecting people and together they ran their bureau for 14 years, reluctantly selling it in 2000 as internet dating started to gain the ascendant.

Travelling

By car: Sidmouth is 10 miles from the Exeter junction (30) of the M5. Follow the A3052 to the Bowd Inn and turn right to follow the road into the town. It is also 9 miles from Honiton. Follow the A375 to Sidmouth, passing through Sidbury and Sidford.

Places to park: There are several town-centre car parks in Sidmouth, including The Ham and Roxborough, run by East Devon District Council, and the privately-run Bedford Lawn, which is the nearest to Kennaway House. There is also the long-stay Manor Road car park, also run by EDDC. As parking at Kennaway House is limited, spaces will be used by authors and organisers and will not be open to the public. There are, however, two disabled parking spaces which may be available on request. There is also on-street parking, with some in Coburg Road, adjacent to Kennaway House.

By coach: National Express services from all parts of the country travel to Exeter. There are regular buses from Exeter to Sidmouth (52A and 52B).

By rail and bus: Train services operate from London (Waterloo) to Honiton and Exeter, and those from the North, Midlands and London (Paddington) operate to Exeter St Davids. Frequent bus services connect the railway station to Exeter bus station, where buses can be caught to Sidmouth. From Honiton railway station there is a regular bus service to Sidmouth, except on Sundays. The 52A links Seaton with Sidmouth, and the 52B links Honiton with Sidmouth. These bus services stop at the Triangle, Sidmouth, which is convenient for the town centre and Esplanade and adjacent to Kennaway House, the festival venue. Call Stagecoach Devon: 01392 427711. National Rail enquiries: 08457 484950, online at www.nationalrail.co.uk.

By air: Exeter airport is thirty minutes’ drive from Sidmouth and there are scheduled flights, both domestic and international.
