Guided Reading Packet This is your responsibility:

If you lose it, you print out a new copy and start all over again.

It is ok to work together, but the Personal Connection and Written Discussion Question should be original (your own).

Follow along with the calendar. Have the vocab, personal connection, and written

discussion question completed before class. Random checks and grades will be assigned

throughout the unit!

Guided Reading Packet Cont. Vocab:

Define each word according to the context of the sentence.

You have to FIND the word to KNOW the context. (i.e. verb, noun, adjective…)

I recommend dictionary.com for quick, painless definitions

Class Discussion Questions: These questions will help you while you read.

We will go over these questions in class.

You do NOT need to answer the questions ahead of time, but you DO need to think about them as you read.

Personal Connection: Look at the discussion questions, pick one for inspiration.

Write about how that question relates to a personal experience from you life

For Example: What kinds of cruelty did Douglass witness as a boy? I have never witnessed anything as cruel as Douglass, but I could write about a time when I was little and I saw my friend hit by a car.

You will have to write one for each chapter, but NO REPEATS…really try to think about different moments. Follow the directions CAREFULLY!

Write a discussion question. Same as when we were doing Socratic Seminars.

As we read (recommendations)

Look for examples of narrative techniques and rhetorical techniques Imagery, irony, pacing, reflection, dialogue, voice/style

Allusion, analogy, antithesis

Ethos, pathos, logos

Look out for V.I.P.’s (Very Important Passages)

If you have your own book…WRITE IN IT!!!

If you have a school’s copy, GET POST-ITS!!! This will help you get used to annotating books (an AP/College skill)
