Matt and Tracie Dvorak of Yankton werehonored as Volunteers of the Month byUnited Way and Volunteer Services of GreaterYankton. It is especially fitting that these ded-icated community servants were honoredduring the month of November and a time ofthankfulness. However, the Dvoraks are theones expressing gratitude — appreciation forthe opportunity to serve others.
“It feels good to volunteer,” said Matt. “Itsets an example for our kids. I hope to pay itforward, and have their community servicecontinue with their future kids.”
“I volunteer because I feel it is a way togive back to the community. I like to do a lit-tle something to make Yankton a betterplace,” added Tracie.
Tracie’s reference to a “little something”in describing the Dvorak’s volunteerism, re-sults in an exhaustive list of hours, projectsand successes in service over the years.Modest about their contributions, volun-teerism has created many memories as theDvorak family fulfills their goal of meeting theneeds of others.
Sacred Heart Parish (SHP) and SacredHeart School (SHS) are the recipients of theDvoraks’ generous sharing of time. Over theyears, they have been leaders and membersof a multitude of committees including theSHP Bazaar, church decorating and SHS GalaDecorating Committees, Soup Luncheons, and more. Matt has been an officer with theKnights of Columbus. Tracie is a Past Presi-dent for Friends of Sacred Heart and thissummer Matt finished his six-year term onSHS Board. They coordinated Faith / Family /Fitness, a project to promote enjoyable, healthy, and family friendly recreation. Oneyear ago the Dvorak Family was inducted intothe SHS Hall of Fame, publicly acknowledgingtheir significant contributions to Catholic ed-ucation.
The Dvoraks have three children. Derek isa freshman at Augustana College in SiouxFalls. Dustin is a junior at Yankton HighSchool. Dani, an eighth grader, is completingher last year at SHS.
Many organizations have benefited fromservice by the Dvorak family. They haveserved Meals on Wheels. They volunteered
with Boy Scouts, and both boys, Derek andDustin, earned their Eagle Scout badge.
To give back, the Dvoraks go the extramile — and sometimes even the extra 75miles in two days of fun and fundraising!
”We have participated in LiveStrong, theAmerican Cancer Society Campaign withwalks, rides and weekend festivities,” Tracienoted.
“We have participated in the Multiple Scle-rosis (MS) Walk and MS Bike Ride for at least23 years,” said Matt, whose late mother facedMS.
Tracie, is employed as a Registered Nurse/ BSN, and works nights at Avera YanktonCare Center. Matt works as the Director ofPhysical Therapy at Lewis & Clark Orthope-dics and Sports Therapy. This dedicated pro-
fessional has shared his expertise from hometo Haiti, serving the Albert Schweitzer Hospi-tal there. Matt hopes his sons may one dayaccompany him on a return trip to Haiti.
The Dvoraks brought awareness for theneeds of Haitians a bit closer to home. Theyspearheaded a fundraiser among the SHS stu-dents that supported the development ofmini Haitian rehab centers for amputees.
The hardworking Dvoraks serve locally —and globally. As the community of Yanktonexpresses thankfulness in honoring Matt andTracie Dvorak for serving others, their great-est gift may be the values they have instilledin their children. The Dvoraks are servingtoday and paying it forward with a future gen-eration that looks forward to continued com-munity service.
