TOASTMASTERS CLUB 1294 Yankton Toastmasters Club 1294 met at the Fryn' Pan Restaurant on Saturday Jan. 7, 2012. Club President John Swensen called the meeting to order and asked Kathy Hejna to give the invocation and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Kevin Buhl served as Toastmaster of the Day and asked grammarian Janice Stone to present the word of the day “Zeal.” Manual speeches were given by Harry Voelzke entitled “Show It, Don't Just Tell It” and Doug Fickbohm entitled “Pick-A-Date, Pick-A-Date.” After the speeches, table topics were lead by Tara Arens who called on members at large to answer questions on variety of topics. The evaluation portion of the meeting was lead by master evaluator John Swensen who asked Joy Winther to evaluate Harry Voelzke and Jeremy Skrenes to evaluate Doug Fickbohm and then presented his evaluation of the meeting in general. Other func- tionaries at the meeting were Steve Hamilton as timer, Vernon Arens as ah counter, Carol Hale as vote counter and Janice Stone as joke master. Tro- phies were awarded to Steve Hamilton for best table topics' response, Doug Fickbohm for best speech, and Joy Winther for best speech evaluator. Yankton Toastmasters Club 1294 meets each Saturday from 7:30-8:40 AM at the Fryn' Pan Restaurant and guests are always welcome to attend a meeting. For information about Toast- masters, call 665-1523 or 660-3904. GFWC YANKTON WOMAN'S CLUB The Yankton Chapter of GFWC Woman's Club met at 11:00am Jan. 7, 2012 at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club. The meeting was called to order by President Julie Clifton. The Pledge of Allegiance, South Dakota Pledge, and Collect for Women were given. President Julie stated that our club member Donelda VanDerhule passed away. Club member Jo Anne Weber gave a very touching program on "Dealing With Crisis". It is not what we say but how we listen to someone who is deal- ing with a death, job loss or any other crisis in our lives. Listening is caring, don't offer advice to the person, but show that you care. Fran Fox introduced her guest Diane Butzloff. Karen Schulz intro- duced Jeanie Gustad. President Julie welcomed new member Marlyce Micklas and pre- sented a rose to her. Vi Ranney said Betts Pulkrabek joined today. She will be presented as a new member at the February meeting. Minutes of the December meeting were approved as written. The Trea- surer's report will be filed pending audit. President Julie presented an inter- esting report on "Wall of the Garbage Truck". When someone is angry or having a bad day don't allow their garbage to dump on you and ruin your day. She also told how her son, a prin- cipal at a school, uses a bucket list for the kids and how successful it has been. Agnes Eide reported the Weston A Price Foundation Yankton Chapter is having a movie night Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 at 7pm at the Benedictine Confer- ence Center. The movie states the clear and present danger of high fruc- tose corn syrup. Thank you's were read from Leah Brandt of HSC Clothing Closet and the staff and board members of the Con- tact Center for our clubs recent dona- tions. Pat Schulze has sent cards to our sick members and will send a sympa- thy card to the VanDerhule family. Mar- ilyn Huntley reported we profited $165.15 on our Uncle Al's sales. Bingo will be held Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1:45pm at Majestic Bluffs. Julie Clifton, Joan Neubauer, Jill Huetig, Maysel Goltz, and Fran Fox will be as- sisting residents. Pres Julie passed out forms to nominate one of our own members for the GFWC of SD Empowered Club Woman Honor. They need to be re- turned to our February meeting. Pres Julie is checking into Hugs for Heros to our soldiers on Valentines Day. Dores Allan made a motion our club donate a $50 memorial to the library in memory of Donelda VanDerhule, 2nd by Pres Julie, motion passed. Dores will be in charge of the memorial. Pres Julie thanked our hostesses Judy Ray and Donna DeJean. Their door prize was won by Lorraine Mc- Neely No further business the meeting was adjourned. TOASTMASTER CLUB 6217 Toastmaster Jane Miller called the Jan. 5th meeting of Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Toastmasters Club 6217 to order at noon in the Benedictine Cen- ter. She then introduced guests, Tracy Taylor and Katie Wagner, both of Yank- ton. Miller started the meeting by ask- ing Jennifer Wubben to lead the invocation, which concerned New Year's reflections. Jeff May led the Table Topics ses- sion using randomly selected current events topics. His respondents were: Eileen O'Connor, MJ Rogers, Greg Stach, Gale Vogt, Tim Bohn, and Wag- ner. Wagner received the Best Respon- dent trophy. General Evaluator Sheryl Schwartz named her team: Bohn as timer; Eric Taylor as counter of the unneeded fillers; and Vogt as tracker for the word of the day, “dynamic”. The Best Speaker and Best Evalu- ator were Stan Sudbeck and Muriel Stach, respectively. Sudbeck's visual presentation, “Genetic Evolution of Corn”, was an informational manual speech using terms like “goose neck- ing” and “genetically modified”. Stach enjoyed Sudbeck's charts, steady voice and humor. Club President Schwartz reminded members of both the “pins and guests” contest and the upcoming officers' training date, i.e., Tuesday, Jan. 17th from 6:30 to 8:30 at RTEC. INTERCHANGE INC. Matt and Tracie Dvorak of Yankton were honored as Volunteers of the Month by United Way and Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton. It is especially fitting that these ded- icated community servants were honored during the month of November and a time of thankfulness. However, the Dvoraks are the ones expressing gratitude — appreciation for the opportunity to serve others. “It feels good to volunteer,” said Matt. “It sets an example for our kids. I hope to pay it forward, and have their community service continue with their future kids.” “I volunteer because I feel it is a way to give back to the community. I like to do a lit- tle something to make Yankton a better place,” added Tracie. Tracie’s reference to a “little something” in describing the Dvorak’s volunteerism, re- sults in an exhaustive list of hours, projects and successes in service over the years. Modest about their contributions, volun- teerism has created many memories as the Dvorak family fulfills their goal of meeting the needs of others. Sacred Heart Parish (SHP) and Sacred Heart School (SHS) are the recipients of the Dvoraks’ generous sharing of time. Over the years, they have been leaders and members of a multitude of committees including the SHP Bazaar, church decorating and SHS Gala Decorating Committees, Soup Luncheons, and more. Matt has been an officer with the Knights of Columbus. Tracie is a Past Presi- dent for Friends of Sacred Heart and this summer Matt finished his six-year term on SHS Board. They coordinated Faith / Family / Fitness, a project to promote enjoyable, healthy, and family friendly recreation. One year ago the Dvorak Family was inducted into the SHS Hall of Fame, publicly acknowledging their significant contributions to Catholic ed- ucation. The Dvoraks have three children. Derek is a freshman at Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Dustin is a junior at Yankton High School. Dani, an eighth grader, is completing her last year at SHS. Many organizations have benefited from service by the Dvorak family. They have served Meals on Wheels. They volunteered with Boy Scouts, and both boys, Derek and Dustin, earned their Eagle Scout badge. To give back, the Dvoraks go the extra mile — and sometimes even the extra 75 miles in two days of fun and fundraising! ”We have participated in LiveStrong, the American Cancer Society Campaign with walks, rides and weekend festivities,” Tracie noted. “We have participated in the Multiple Scle- rosis (MS) Walk and MS Bike Ride for at least 23 years,” said Matt, whose late mother faced MS. Tracie, is employed as a Registered Nurse / BSN, and works nights at Avera Yankton Care Center. Matt works as the Director of Physical Therapy at Lewis & Clark Orthope- dics and Sports Therapy. This dedicated pro- fessional has shared his expertise from home to Haiti, serving the Albert Schweitzer Hospi- tal there. Matt hopes his sons may one day accompany him on a return trip to Haiti. The Dvoraks brought awareness for the needs of Haitians a bit closer to home. They spearheaded a fundraiser among the SHS stu- dents that supported the development of mini Haitian rehab centers for amputees. The hardworking Dvoraks serve locally — and globally. As the community of Yankton expresses thankfulness in honoring Matt and Tracie Dvorak for serving others, their great- est gift may be the values they have instilled in their children. The Dvoraks are serving today and paying it forward with a future gen- eration that looks forward to continued com- munity service. Dvorak Honored As U.W. Svien P.T., Ph.D., M.A., chair of the De- partment of Physical Therapy at the University of South Dakota, has been appointed to the Physical Therapy Advisory Committee of the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners. In this capacity, Svien will advise the board on matters pertaining to physical therapy practice, attend regular board meetings and work with the board’s executive director on matters as they arise. “Dr. Svien is respected interna- tionally for her work and we are fortunate to have her expertise here at the School of Health Sci- ences,” said Michael J. Lawler, dean of USD’s School of Health Sci- ences. Svien has taught in USD’s De- partment of Physical Therapy for the past 22 years, where she has been widely recognized for profes- sional excellence, particularly for her promotion of minority and rural health. In 2011, she was awarded USD’s Diversity Award and the Dr. Ronnie Leavitt Award for Leadership in the Promotion on So- cial Responsibility in Physical Ther- apy from the Amer- ican Physical Therapy Association. Additionally, in 2008, she was named “Physical Therapist of the Year” by the South Dakota Physical Therapy Association. Svien earned her doctorate in pediatric medical science from the University of Ne- braska in 2002, her master’s degree in anatomy from the University of South Dakota in 1983 and com- pleted her undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin in 1975. Matt and Tracie Dvorak of Yankton werehonored as Volunteers of the Month byUnited Way and Volunteer Services of GreaterYankton. It is especially fitting that these ded-icated community servants were honoredduring the month of November and a time ofthankfulness. However, the Dvoraks are theones expressing gratitude — appreciation forthe opportunity to serve others.

“It feels good to volunteer,” said Matt. “Itsets an example for our kids. I hope to pay itforward, and have their community servicecontinue with their future kids.”

“I volunteer because I feel it is a way togive back to the community. I like to do a lit-tle something to make Yankton a betterplace,” added Tracie.

Tracie’s reference to a “little something”in describing the Dvorak’s volunteerism, re-sults in an exhaustive list of hours, projectsand successes in service over the years.Modest about their contributions, volun-teerism has created many memories as theDvorak family fulfills their goal of meeting theneeds of others.

Sacred Heart Parish (SHP) and SacredHeart School (SHS) are the recipients of theDvoraks’ generous sharing of time. Over theyears, they have been leaders and membersof a multitude of committees including theSHP Bazaar, church decorating and SHS GalaDecorating Committees, Soup Luncheons,and more. Matt has been an officer with theKnights of Columbus. Tracie is a Past Presi-dent for Friends of Sacred Heart and thissummer Matt finished his six-year term onSHS Board. They coordinated Faith / Family /Fitness, a project to promote enjoyable,healthy, and family friendly recreation. Oneyear ago the Dvorak Family was inducted intothe SHS Hall of Fame, publicly acknowledgingtheir significant contributions to Catholic ed-ucation.

The Dvoraks have three children. Derek isa freshman at Augustana College in SiouxFalls. Dustin is a junior at Yankton HighSchool. Dani, an eighth grader, is completingher last year at SHS.

Many organizations have benefited fromservice by the Dvorak family. They haveserved Meals on Wheels. They volunteered

with Boy Scouts, and both boys, Derek andDustin, earned their Eagle Scout badge.

To give back, the Dvoraks go the extramile — and sometimes even the extra 75miles in two days of fun and fundraising!

”We have participated in LiveStrong, theAmerican Cancer Society Campaign withwalks, rides and weekend festivities,” Tracienoted.

“We have participated in the Multiple Scle-rosis (MS) Walk and MS Bike Ride for at least23 years,” said Matt, whose late mother facedMS.

Tracie, is employed as a Registered Nurse/ BSN, and works nights at Avera YanktonCare Center. Matt works as the Director ofPhysical Therapy at Lewis & Clark Orthope-dics and Sports Therapy. This dedicated pro-

fessional has shared his expertise from hometo Haiti, serving the Albert Schweitzer Hospi-tal there. Matt hopes his sons may one dayaccompany him on a return trip to Haiti.

The Dvoraks brought awareness for theneeds of Haitians a bit closer to home. Theyspearheaded a fundraiser among the SHS stu-dents that supported the development ofmini Haitian rehab centers for amputees.

The hardworking Dvoraks serve locally —and globally. As the community of Yanktonexpresses thankfulness in honoring Matt andTracie Dvorak for serving others, their great-est gift may be the values they have instilledin their children. The Dvoraks are servingtoday and paying it forward with a future gen-eration that looks forward to continued com-munity service.

VERMILLION — Lana R. SvienP.T., Ph.D., M.A., chair of the De-partment of Physical Therapy atthe University of South Dakota, hasbeen appointed to the PhysicalTherapy Advisory Committee ofthe South Dakota Board of Medicaland Osteopathic Examiners. In thiscapacity, Svien will advise theboard on matters pertaining tophysical therapy practice, attendregular board meetings and workwith the board’s executive directoron matters as they arise.

“Dr. Svien is respected interna-tionally for her work and we arefortunate to have her expertisehere at the School of Health Sci-ences,” said Michael J. Lawler,dean of USD’s School of Health Sci-ences.

Svien has taught in USD’s De-partment of Physical Therapy forthe past 22 years, where she hasbeen widely recognized for profes-sional excellence, particularly for

her promotion ofminority and ruralhealth. In 2011, shewas awarded USD’sDiversity Awardand the Dr. RonnieLeavitt Award forLeadership in thePromotion on So-cial Responsibilityin Physical Ther-apy from the Amer-

ican Physical Therapy Association.Additionally, in 2008, she wasnamed “Physical Therapist of theYear” by the South Dakota PhysicalTherapy Association. Svien earnedher doctorate in pediatric medicalscience from the University of Ne-braska in 2002, her master’s degreein anatomy from the University ofSouth Dakota in 1983 and com-pleted her undergraduate work atthe University of Wisconsin in1975.
