Dear Parents and Guardians,

Those of you who had the opportunity to see Galen’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Tecnicolor Dreamcoat know what an outstanding production it was!

Congratulations to the cast, crew, and myriad of other helpers and participants. Not only did we have the talented and committed Galen students, staff and parents contributing to the enterprise, we also had students, staff and parents from the five Catholic primary schools of St Bernard’s, Our Lady’s, St Patrick’s (all from Wanga-ratta), St Mary’s (Rutherglen) and St Joseph’s (Chiltern).

I attended opening night and Friday night’s performances so I saw both casts in action. There was a genuine quality in the acting, musicianship, staging and overall presentation of this production. The fact that there were over 160 students in-volved from six different schools is a great tribute to the organizational and crea-tive talent of the show’s director, Julie Nolan, and musical director, David Ashfield. I am aware, too that there was enormous input from other staff and parents both at the performances, and in the preparations for such things as costumes, tickets, su-pervision, etc.

As I reported to staff afterwards, this was an experience that should make us all very proud to be Galen!

Subject selection for 2012 The important process of subject selection has already begun for students under-taking studies at Year 11 or Year 12 next year. It will soon spread to include stu-dents going into Years 9 & 10.

I encourage all parents to take an active and close interest in this process as the decisions made will have a significant bearing on your child’s pathway over the coming years, including those years immediately after they finish secondary school.

Please ensure that you take full advantage of the resources at Galen to assist you and your child to make the most appropriate decisions to meet their individual goals.

Junior School News Lauren Lee, Year 7 Coordinator

Year 7 and 8 students have had a very busy couple of weeks. The Year 7 homerooms all enjoyed great weather when they attended retreat days at the 15 mile creek camp. The students were challenged by mountain bike riding and team building games. They were also able to reflect during an RE activity on their time at Galen and their hopes and dreams for the future. Thanks must go to all teachers involved for making the trips possible. 7/1 were in charge of running the prayer assembly last week. They organised some entertainment by the band Conspiracy Plan who are touring the region as part of Haworth music. The band not only provided students and staff with some great en-tertainment but also reinforced the message that bullying is not ok and that if prob-lems arise there are people who you can talk to for help. Year 8’s were also lucky enough to watch a presentation of The Hurting Game which also focused on the im-pact on bullying in many different contexts. Students in Year 7 were treated to an outing to the production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. As always Julie Nolan, David Ashfield and all of the team managed to pull together another fantastic show. This week is PE week and there are a number of activities for both staff and stu-dents to get involved in. Readers cup challenges also get underway this week with the Year 8’s involved this Wednesday and Year 7’s involved next Wednesday. The Junior School also welcomes back Mr Arcuri and Ms Bellani after their wed-ding in Italy over the holidays.

Hi everybody! My name is Azzurra Selvaggia Magrin or, as everyone calls me since I have arrived here in Australia, Zoo or Zou and I’m the new Italian Language Assistant. I think that most of you already know me but it’s never too late for a short introduction!

Something about me? I was born 25 years ago in Vicenza, a really nice city in the north-east of Italy, 70km far from Venice. After a diploma at the liceo scien-tifico in Vicenza (which is an high school focused a on sciences), I completed my bachelor in Philosophy at the University of Padova and, a year ago, I graduated in Philosophy of Language at the University Ca’ Foscari, in Venice, with a thesis on Wittgenstein, Language games and Lin-guistic mythologies.

I arrived in Australia at the end of April thanks to a scholarship provided by the Italian Ministry of Education and Co. It is a non profit organization for Italians and Australians of Italian descent. I was supposed to work in Melbourne but I managed to come to the country, instead of working in the city, to experience the real Australian life and…here I am! I’m really happy to be here in Wangaratta, Galen College is a fantastic place to work and to learn the difficult but rewarding art of teaching.

I will be working at Galen until the end of the school year but something tells me that I’ll not leave Australia so easily!

Buon lavoro a tutti Zou

Year 10 Formal And just what is ‘Phoebus’ lodging'?

Keith Willett, Middle School Director On Monday August 3rd thanks to the organisation of our English Domain Leader Mrs. Anne O’Dwyer, the Year 10 students were treated to outstanding performances of one of William Shakespeare’s most famous works, ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The presentation of this play is part of the semester two study of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ undertaken by all Year 10 students. This performance was presented by Nicole, Tim and Ross, members of the Complete Works Theatre Com-pany. Their performance of Romeo and Juliet was out-standing. The actors, true to their claim that Shake-speare’s works were ‘meant to be played and not read’ really brought the play to life for their audience. Following the performance the actors generously shared their knowledge of the themes and character por-traits that are part of Shakespeare’s everlasting legacy to literature. Were Romeo and Juliet driven by love or lust? Was Romeo reckless and a shameless risk taker? Was Juliet a simpering sex siren or just a naive native of Verona or did she really love her man? Was Friar Lawrence an egotisti-cal idiot? Was Tybalt a better swordsman than Mercutio? What drove Tybalt to slide his rapier between Mercutio’s ribs? Did Lady Capulet have a drinking problem? These are just some of the timeless questions that were both asked of and answered by the talented cast. As well as an analysis of character roles the thematic content of the play was also given colourful considera-tion. The themes of love, revenge, family disharmony, fate, destiny and recklessness were all key themes discussed during question time. A highlight of the play was the contribution of four of Galen’s more theatrical students in Molly Burnett, Nick Dellicastelli, Jared Hargreaves and Eliza Honeybun who all starred in the opening scene. ‘Do you bite your thumb at us Sir’! These students really produced great efforts at short notice. Thanks guys and girls! In short ‘Romeo and Juliet’ was a great performance and no doubt a highlight of the Year 10 English Curricu-lum for 2011. And just what is ‘Phoebus’ Lodging’? The first stu-dent who can give an accurate answer to this question will receive a small prize courtesy of the English Do-main. Answers to be directed to Mr.Willett.

Knitting Club Rachel Froude, Junior Library

The launch of the Junior Library knitting club occurred on Monday 25th of July. Lots of students took advantage of the opportunity to learn the craft of knitting. Some students are already proficient knit-ters and brought their own projects along and enjoyed the warm and cosy environ-ment. Lots of variety of wool and needles are available, and also a knitting nancy. This year the club will support the Wraps for Love program. Knitted

squares 10” x 10” are donated to the program, where they are sown into blankets and given to worthy causes. Any parent or student who would like to knit for this program are warmly welcome to participate and to donate squares. Needles and wool are available in the Junior Library if you don’t have any at home. The squares can be a mish mash of colours and patterns or just plain stocking stitch, it all adds to the fun of the finished blanket. Pictured: Shannon Mays

Year 8 Leadership Day Paul Maher, Deputy Principal: Catholic Identity

Galen College hosted students in Year 8 from across the region last Thursday. They spent the day with members of the CARITAS or-ganisation discussing ways that they can have a voice about the global issues of poverty and injustice. A number of our year eight SRC representatives were involved in the day and contributed significantly to the discussions that were held. CARITAS Australia see these young people as the way forward in solving many of the global issues that we have struggled to con-

front and respond to. Much of the day was spent identifying some of these issues, working in teams to look at ways that our schools can raise aware-ness of the 'Millennium Goals' and to join together in solidarity to commit to social justice issues both in Austra-lia and around the world.

Pictured: Year 8 students from a number of local schools kick the footy and get to know each other during their lunch break.

Where do you draw the line? When it comes to relationships, sometimes there's a fine line between what's ok and what's not. What crosses the line for one person might be perfectly ok for another. And while sometimes the line is crystal clear, other times it's a bit blurred. It all comes down to re-spect. Respect for others, and understanding of what crossing the line means to them. And respect for yourself, so you can be clear about where you draw the line. Women, Family, Violence and Financial Security Seeking: Brave Women who Want to be in Control of their Finances

Tools for Change is a unique financial mentoring program. We have trained women volunteers across Wangaratta and Shepparton to support you in your journey to financial confidence over 12 months. Women exiting domestic violence often have limited financial skills because of the ex-treme level of control displayed by their partners. Pre-existing skills, resources and self-belief are often eroded through years of abuse and put-downs. Tools for Change gives women the opportunity to meet regularly with another woman, who is compassionate, a good listener, who is trained in basic financial management. Tools for Change is not a counselling service. The mentor’s role is to support and guide you in the fi-nancial aspects of your and your family’s life. To find out more contact Sandi King or Karen O’Connor at Women’s Health Goulburn North East on 0357223009 or [email protected]. Enquires are treated with confidence and respect.

Words From Wellbeing

On August 1st, the Complete Works Theatre Company came to perform one of Shakespeare’s most re-nowned plays ‘Macbeth’. The performance was clever considering they only had three people to act out the play, with one actor performing more than 10 char-acters. The way they carried out the performance was perfect for a school project considering they picked out the most influential and important scenes. At the end of the performance there was a short period for ques-tion time, they answered the ques-tions with thorough and descriptive knowledge, overall a very good step towards a better understanding of the complex, famous Shakespearian language.

Cardboard for a Bed On Friday the 29th July, students and teachers from Galen Catholic College slept out in the school auditorium to raise awareness of and show solidarity for the homeless in the Wangaratta vicinity and to raise money for St Vincent de Paul. The event was organised by two year 12 stu-dents, Isobel Tait and Maddie Burder. The organization of this event ful-filled part of their religion class require-ments and was evidence of their keen passion for social justice and their desire to make the winter sleep out an annual event. “It’s a great way to get younger kids involved in social justice. As students who did this in the past, Maddie and myself wanted the younger students to have the same experience that we did”, says Isobel Tait. Students participated in quizzes, improvised songs, decorated boxes and drew their homes and families. Having to rub out thier drawings after explaining it’s importance provided a powerful mes-

sage for participants, as it helped them to understand the perspective of a homeless person. Guest speakers from St Vincent De Paul discussed their role in the com-munity and how Vinnie’s works as a busi-ness and a community help centre which extends beyond the shop most are familiar with. Students left more informed and some were left wondering if they could help in other ways. The screening of ‘Pursuit of Happiness’, starring Will Smith, provided excellent food for thought before participants moved off to their personal box to sleep on. Many donations for the night came from the local community including all of the food for the night and breakfast the next morning and the girls would like to extend a special thankyou to everyone who helped out. The girls remarked “it was fantastic to see so much community interest and support” and expressed their gratitude to those who donated food for the night.

The following morning, the night’s events were hot on everyone’s lips as teachers and students alike packed up their box and sleeping bags and headed off. The student organisers would like to thank those who helped create the suc-cessful night: Deputy Principal-Catholic Identity, Mr Paul Maher; youth counsel-lor, Ms Therese Rodway; Principal, Mr Bernard Neal and Social Justice and Community Service teacher, Mrs Fiona Neal as well as many other friends and family members.

Junior Science Quiz Update Carla Murphy, Junior Science Lab Technician

What am I? 1) I am flat. 2) I have a cartoon character named after me. This character was in a

1989 Disney Movie. 3) I am great at camouflage. 4) When I first hatch I have two eyes, one on either side of my

head. After a few days, I begin to lean to one side and one eye begins to migrate to the side facing upwards. Eventually I have two eyes on one side of my head only.

5) I belong to the order Pleuronectiformes. What am I? …….I AM A FLOUNDER!

The cartoon character in the 1989 Disney movie “The Little Mermaid” was named flounder. An interesting fact however he is not actually a Flounder fish, he is an Atlantic Blue Tang.

Congratulations to Eden Mannix of 7.8 for winning this week’s Quiz.7.8 were the class to have the most entrants.

Year 7 have won the Quiz two weeks in a row, great stuff!

Medieval Day Peter Girolami, Humanities Convenor

Recently, in Year Eight Humanities, students have enjoyed learning about medieval times. Last week they went on a trip back in time to experience medieval life for themselves. The Melbourne based company ‘History up Close’ came to Galen for a day and delivered three interactive sessions to the students. The sessions covered the topics of Costumes and Lifestyle, Music and Dance and Weapons and Armour. The students thoroughly enjoyed the day as they had a chance to put their knowledge to use and learn more about this fascinating period in history. They got to dress in medieval attire, play musical instruments, learn dances, view weapons of the time and wear medieval-style armour and helmets.

Senior Football On Tuesday 2nd August Galen Catholic College played 2 round robin games of football against Notre Damn Shepparton and Tallangatta High School. Things didn’t get off to a good start only having 15 boys turn up on the day to represent their school. Under these circumstances it made a difficult task for these boys to succeed. As a result Galen were defeated in both games, they were outnumbered on most occasions. There was some very inspiring and determined play evident on the day by all players. An excellent display in the ruck by James Smith as well as Andrew Cus-son in the centre provided a real driving force. Other players contributed admira-bly on the day despite being significantly under manned. Hopefully in future those students who initially make the commitment to play on the day will turn up. Otherwise it puts future events at this level in jeop-ardy. Thank you to those boys who played both games on the day. Their behaviour and attitude was fantastic. Thanks to Mr Burt and to Michael Clark for their su-pervision of the day.

Cycling Championship

The competition was the school cy-cling championship, held in Wangaratta on Tuesday 2nd August. Thanks to Jim Samon who accompanied the team. Tomarsh Loki won the U15, Thomas MacDonald 3rd, Fergus Samon 6th. All rode exceptionally well and represented Galen in a fine manner. Well done boys!

Haworth’s School Band

The Junior School was treated during their assembly last week to an out-standing performance by Haworth’s school band. Students from the Senior Concert Band and from Year 9 and 10 Mu-sic classes were also invited to attend. They played a number of catchy songs and then offered a short Q & A session. Stu-dents were asked to bring a gold coin donation for the band to donate to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Yr 7 & 8 Soccer Well done to the boys who participated in the Hume Year 7 soccer. The side played some fantastic soccer and fin-ished 2nd on the day. A big thanks to Lachlan McKellar who coached the team. Best players included: Ethan Rim-mer, Zac Elliot, Josh Taylor and Will Eefting.

Congratulations to the Year 8 soccer team who competed in the Hume soccer competition on Wednesday 27th of July. The team played some incredible soccer throughout the day and were beaten by a committed Notre Dame. As a result they finished second. Thanks to Michael Clark for his help with the team on the day. Well done to Ryley Pasquali and Tim Feehan who took on the responsi-bilities of coaching and managing the team for most of the day. Best Players: Tim Feehan, Ryley Pasquali, Daniel Bannister and Aaron Taylor.

Yr 7 Yarrawonga Football Challenge

Peter Hill On Tuesday 26th July the Year 7 boys footy played Sacred Heart in their annual challenge match. Having been on the re-ceiving end of a comprehensive thrashing last year, the Galen boys were determined to make amends in 2011. In what turned out to be a fantastic match of junior footy, no more than one goal separated the two teams all day until halfway through the last quarter when Sacred Heart kicked a couple of unan-swered goals to win by 7 points, 7.10.52 to Galen’s 6.9.45. The game was played in great spirit, with both teams using the ball well by hand and foot. Thomas Kukulka was out-standing in the ruck, winning most hit-outs and picking up a lot of possessions around the ground. On ballers, Will Nolan and Fletcher Stewart were all class around the packs. Both boys were good in and under, and used the ball well when in space. Gareth Boak was another to impress, dominating at the stoppages and showing plenty of courage to win the contested ball. In defence, James Gibson, Sam We-stra and Jayden Bear read the ball well and provided great rebound. James Ben-nett was another who never stopped try-ing for the whole four quarters. Thanks to Michael Clark who has done a great job as coach of the Yr 7 foot-ball team this year. The help of Ben Tala-rico, Dylan Landgren and Jeremy Nanker-vis was also much appreciated.
