THE LITTLEMERMAID

Original Source: Paul Singh - http://moviepilot.com/posts/3277739

The Little Mermaid was written by Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen, back in 1837 and has since seen a number of adaptations with the most popular being Disney’s classic movie from 1989. In Andersen’s story, The Little Mermaid is never given a name. She is 10 years old and has five older sisters instead of six. The Mermaid and her sisters are all born one year apart. In Anderson’s story, it is explained that on her 15th birthday, a mermaid is allowed to swim to the surface and look at the world above. The Little Mermaid would constantly dream about life on the surface and how it would be. She has an established relationship with her grandmother who tells her about the human world and the way the world works. Her 15th birthday came and she travelled to the surface. Once there, she spotted a grand ship. She approached the ship and listened to all of the music and cheers and spotted a handsome lad on the ship whose appearance captured her heart almost right away. He was a prince and the Mermaid couldn’t keep her eyes off him. However, a great storm soon thundered across the skies and the perilous sea proved to be too much for the prince’s ship, with the winds and waves knocking it over on its side. The Mermaid swam with all her might and rescued the Prince from drowning. The Little Mermaid decides to go to the Sea Witch, hoping for a way to become human. The Sea Witch tells her that in exchange for her ability to speak, she could be human, but at a terrible cost. The Sea Witch then cuts the Mermaid’s tongue out with a knife. The Prince finds the Mermaid and takes her back to his castle where she is dressed richly. One night, the Mermaid spotted her sisters in the water and beckoned for them to approach her. Once they recognized their human sister, they told her how much sorrow their family was in that she was gone. The Prince loved the Mermaid, but he loved her as he would a little child. He told her that she was dear to him, but that he was in love with the temple maiden that had found him on the beach after the ship wreckage. The Prince and Mermaid sail away to another kingdom after his parents forced him to meet its princess. However, he soon discovered the Princess was the temple maiden that found him on the beach, and the Prince had finally found the girl that had rescued him. The Prince married the Princess. That night she the Little Mermaid saw her sisters surface from the ocean depths with all of their hair cut short. They had all sacrificed their hair to the Sea Witch for a way to save their sister’s life. The Little Mermaid would have to plunge a dagger into the heart of the Prince and let his blood drip over her feet. Then, she would turn back into a mermaid and would be able to live out the rest of her life. The Mermaid – holding the knife in her hand – walked into the Prince’s chambers but couldn’t kill him. After everything, she still loved him. She threw the dagger overboard, and as the sun started to rise, she threw herself into the ocean, her body turning into foam. However, something peculiar happened, the Little Mermaid started to rise up into the sky. Her body was destroyed but she was now an ethereal being, surrounded by others of the same. They explained to the Mermaid that because of her struggle to achieve a soul, she had become a Daughter of the Air. After 300 years of doing good deeds for mankind,a Daughter of the Air is rewarded with a soul and is given entry into the Kingdom of God.

KingTriton-TommyMetcalfHi everyone! This is my first KYDS production and I’m soooo exited, even though the rehearsals have been hard it’s been so fun! I wanted to be King Triton because he’s a guy who doesn’t really do much but is needed all the time and I think that’s quite cool! I hope you enjoy my first show with KYDS. Byeee!

Jetsam-MorganSheldonThis is my third show with KYDS and this one is a great show with some great choreography and acting. I am playing one of Ursula’s minions and I’m really enjoying it. So far this has been one of my favourite shows for rehearsals. I hope you enjoy the performance!

PrinceEric-BenCollinsThis is my eighth show with KYDS and for me, by far the most enjoyable to be part of! Since my first show with KYDS; Seussical Jr, I have had a lot of experience with this and other groups. I am currently a student at Tomorrow’s Talent and I recently performed in ‘Pirates Of Penzance’ with WAOS, which was a completely different challenge to the part of Prince Eric. I hope I can perform to the best of my ability on stage!

Scuttle-StevenHydeHi, I’m Steven and I am 12 years old and been at KYDS for less than a year, but I am enjoying every bit of it. I would like to continue being a member of KYDS and performing in shows. I particularly like playing the part of Scuttle as he is a really stupid know-it-all but please don’t cringe at how dumb I am in the show - I am in character..!

Grimsby-HarryYellandThis is my sixth show with KYDS and I am the oldest amongst the boys. Since I started I have played many roles including Landau in Dracula Spectacula and my favourite part so far, Buttons! I have really enjoyed our rehearsals and I have worked so hard on my character. I hope you enjoy the show!

Ariel-GraceUptonI have been at KYDS for two and half years now and this will be my fifth show! In 2015 I was nominated for the NETG Adjudicator’s Award for Tom Cat in Dick Wittington. I’ve loved every minute being with my fellow cast members; learning dances, reading through the script, just every rehearsal really! I can’t believe I am playing a Disney Princess! I love being Ariel because she is quite stubborn and likes things her own way - just like me really!

Flounder-CharlieWarnerI joined KYDS back in February after some other members encouraged me to join. At first I was nervous but I knew almost every face present and was welcomed with open arms! I didn’t know if first-timers could audition for a main role but I gave it a go anyway and got a great result. I play Flounder the fantastic fish and can’t wait for the opening night!

Sebastian-TomNichollMy name is Tom Nicoll and I’m 14 years old. This is my third production with KYDS following Dracula Spectacula where I played Hans and Cinderella where I played Grizelda. I have also appeared in other shows such as Our House, Grease and most recently The Pirates of Penzance. I have loved rehearsing for the show and hope you enjoy it as much as I have!

Ursula-EllieRussellI am delighted to say that I have spent 5 great years with KYDS and The Little Mermaid is my tenth show! I am really looking forward to playing the role of Ursula as it is a big contrast to playing the Fairy Godmother in the last panto, Cinderella. Sit back, relax and enjoythe show!

THE CAST

Flotsam-MatildaHensAs a new member of the company, this has been my first production and a memorable one too. Everyone has made me feel very welcome and I have loved every minute of it (especially playing Flotsam). Aside from performing, I love horse riding, karate and spending time with my dog Biscuit and kitten Inka.

Mersister/EnsembleSeahorse-MarcusRenshawMy names Marcus and I have been at KYDS for almost a year now, this being my second show. This is my first speaking role in a KYDS show (not counting shouting ‘SEVEN!’ in Cinderella) playing the part of the Seahorse. I really enjoy KYDS because it helps me with my confidence and I have made a lot of friends here.

Pilot-MatthewGreedI have been involved in KYDS for 5 years now and I have enjoyed every moment of it. Over the years I have played an array of characters, including Starkey the Pirate in Peter Pan, a Dwarf in Snow White, a Young Elvis Presley and many more. I have enjoyed it all as I’ve been able to play such different characters with different personalities. I love playing Pilot - who is the Captain of the Ship - as it is something different! Hope you all enjoy the show!

ChefLouis-OllySmithMy name is Olly, I am fifteen years old and I am playing the role of Chef Louis. I have been a part of KYDS for one year now and done two shows in the past with this crazy lot. I have enjoyed every second of KYDS even if they made me audition first for this show. (Thanks for that by the way..!) I really hope you enjoy this show as much as I enjoy being at KYDS.

Carlotta/Mersister-EmilyUptonThe Little Mermaid Jr will be my fourth show with KYDS. I have played different parts like Kelly in Dracula Spectacular, Pip in Dick Whittington and Bows in Cinderella. I enjoy KYDS because you can get into character knowing no-one will judge you and have a lot of fun. I love playing Carlotta because she is so fun and posh (which is not me) and I get to be with my sister (Ariel). Carlotta is a different character for me so I am learning new skills every rehearsal.
