Friday 30th August 2019 Term 3 Issue 13
YEAR 7 IPL EXHIBITIONS Year 7 had their penultimate exhibition for the year last week, and they absolutely smashed it!
They presented their two projects: Test of Time and Beating the Odds. Test of Time is a project
that centres on an ancient civilisation. This year our classes studied either Ancient Rome or
Ancient Egypt. The products they created blew me away. Students worked in groups to create
short films about their civilisation. Some used a green screen, some made documentaries. We
had mummified chickens, full scale Roman legion shields, clay cartouches, sarcophagi, Roman
temples, coins and scrolls with hieroglyphics! Beating the Odds is a project that explores animal
adaptations and a variety of habitats. Students had to design their own creature to survive in a
specific biome. You can see a number of dioramas of different biomes and some pictures of the
thoughtful and ingenious designs of these creatures. The dedication, attention to detail and
hard work that all the students have put in to produce such high quality products is incredible. At
one point in the day, students presented to and spoke in front of an audience of 70+ people.

WELL DONE YEAR 7
SASS RECOGNITION WEEK
On Thursday this week, Principal Scott Paterson treated the Canobolas High SAS (School
Administration and Support) Staff to a thankyou morning tea at Simply Nile Café. It was a
chance for all our SAS staff to catch up and enjoy some time out amongst beautiful
surroundings.
SASS Recognition Week is a time to acknowledge and thank the often unsung heroes of our
school who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make our school run smoothly.
Thank you Mr Paterson.
CREATIVE ARTS NEWS
Photography and Digital Imaging Stage 6
This term Year 11 have been investigating the topic of Still Life or Vanitas in photography. Our
investigation started by researching the origins of Vanitas, and the Renaissance still life
paintings continue to be a topic that artists and photographers keep referring to in their
artmaking practice. Students have looked at traditional and contemporary Vanistas artworks
and photographs and put together their own scenes to photograph and submit as part of their
portfolio for Term 3. Students have also been experimenting with the digital SLR camera and
the manual settings to control the appearance of their photographs. Students then use
programs like Photoshop to edit their photographs which is industry standard. Students who
have a very keen interest in photography can use their portfolio to apply to university or TAFE in
the future. Canobolas Rural Technology High School has a long tradition of providing that
stepping stone into a career in the arts.
Kyah Moore enjoying her morning milo and discussing her plans for her assessment that
has a uniquely Australian still life theme. Many of the objects used in this display have a
great deal of cultural and symbolic meaning and the class has spent a good deal of
time getting the lighting and placement of these displays exactly right and the results
have been remarkable.

“I have a dream”- A New Creative and Performing Arts Centre
We need your support!!!
Comprehensive education is underpinned by creativity and opportunity. At Canobolas Rural
Technology High School we have expanded the opportunities for students to participate in
creative and performing arts subjects, including Music and Visual Arts. The numbers of students
who take the opportunities we offer is increasing exponentially and our current capacity to
deliver these subjects and extracurricular activities has become stretched.
The programs that we provide are highly sought after due to the expertise of our experienced
and dedicated Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) team. The current capacity of our learning
spaces is not able to accommodate the demand for CAPA programs. To continue the delivery
of high quality, engaging and stimulating programs our students need access to learning
environments that offer specialist equipment, adequate storage, areas for rehearsal and
performances spaces that will enhance possibilities for student engagement.
Our vision for Canobolas Rural Technology High School is a new Creative and Performing Centre,
a dedicated resource that supports the students of our school. If we are successful in our grant
application, we will be calling on students and members of the school community to help with
the design of the building. Below is just a draft of an idea for the layout of the building…however
you might have additional ideas.
We are calling on members of the community to endorse our application for funding from the
Stronger Country Communities Fund 2019 third round, in the form of a letter. If you would like to
support our application, your letter would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact the school if you require any further information or would like to discuss your
contribution to this outstanding opportunity.
The CAPA team thanks you for your time in this matter and look forward to your continued
support of our project.

Gift of Music "Fire and Rain" Guitar Raffle Enter for a chance to win one of two beautiful handmade guitars. Proceeds will help Rural Aid's Gift of
Music provide guitars and ukuleles to children in rural and remote Australia in areas affected by drought or natural disaster.
Help us bring the Gift of Music to rural Australian kids Enter the Gift of Music Guitar Raffle for a chance to win a one of two beautiful hand made guitars generously donated by the Brisbane Guitar Making School.
Andrew Armstrong, from the Brisbane Guitar Making School, with the help of his students and a couple of sponsors has generously donated not only 1 but 2 handcrafted acoustic guitars, through their "Fire and Rain" project. Each guitar is handcrafted from Queensland timber (donated by Australian Guitar Timbers) and comes with a Hiscox case (donated by Pro Music Australia). One guitar is an OM/000 and the other is a DSD/J45. The first name drawn can choose the guitar they would like and the second name drawn gets the remaining guitar.
Gift of Music is an initiative of Rural Aid, a not-for-profit organisation helping disadvantaged children in rural and remote Australia gain access to the life-changing educational and social opportunities that music brings.
Music education is crucial for all children’s development, but for children and families isolated by location and impacted by the devastation of drought and natural disaster, music is imperative. Gift of Music is dedicated to helping improve the mental well-being of rural children, their families and communities.
We give children the chance to learn an instrument, be part of an ensemble, build self-esteem and self-confidence, develop a skill and a love that may last a lifetime. Music, learning music and being part of an ensemble, can play a vital role in a child’s life, especially a child affected by geographical, social and economic disadvantage.
To play a musical instrument however, you need more than passion, you need a musical instrument! That’s where your support of this raffle comes in. Your assistance can change lives.
Proceeds from the Gift of Music Guitar Raffle will help us in supporting rural Australian kids by providing them with guitars and ukuleles and the opportunity to experience the life-changing impact of learning music

Premier’s Debating Challenge
Our Year 7 and 8 debating team had a great start to the Premier’s Debating Challenge this
term. The team of Brock Anderson, Rachael Anderson, Lacey Browne and Jessica Healey won
their first debate against Orange High School. The topic was government funding for overseas
exchange programs. For the second round, our team were up against Kelso High, and they also
came away as the winners of this debate about banning social media for people under the age
of 18. Unfortunately, they were defeated in their third debate against Bathurst High School, with
the topic of sugar tax. The team have worked extremely hard with their debating coach, Miss
Doyle, and look forward to their next debate.
Past the Shallows
Last week were extremely lucky to have Favel
Parrett come to our school to talk to our
students about her novel, Past the Shallows.
Students in Year 12 English Standard study the
novel for the HSC. It was an extremely valuable
experience to get first-hand insight into the
novel and the author’s experiences as a writer.
Favel Parrett also generously gave our students
copies of her novels.

On Friday 27th August, Australian Olympic Gold Medallist, Suzy Balogh, visited our school as
part of the Olympics Unleashed Program. Suzy is a Clay Shooter who won gold at the Athens
Olympics (2004) and was a finalist at the London Olympics (2012). Years 9, 10 and CHPA
students attended the session. Suzy shared her life journey and experiences from her Olympic
journey. A big thank you to Suzy, the Olympic Unleashed program and all the staff and
students who came along.
In Week 4, a group of Canobolas students ventured down to Perisher Valley for the annual
PDHPE Faculty ski trip. This year we again combined our ski trip with our snow-loving CKC Cup
peers at Cowra High School and invited Canowindra High School to travel alongside them to
reduce our costs. On Wednesday 14th August we departed Canobolas High School and
travelled via coach to Jindabyne to our accommodation, “Snowy Valley Resort”, which
overlooks Lake Jindabyne. That evening we were fitted with ski gear, clothes and received the
important information required about our snow experience. Early Thursday morning we
travelled via coach to Perisher Valley Terminal and caught to Ski Tube under the mountain to
Blue Cow for a full day of lessons run by qualified ski instructors and skiing. After a big Day 1 on
the slopes, we returned to Jindabyne that evening for dinner and night time activities. On
Friday we travelled back to Perisher for another day’s skiing to refine our newly learnt skills in our
morning lessons and continued into the afternoon. We left the slopes Friday afternoon and
started the big journey home, arriving at the Orange railway station after midnight. Despite a
bit of windy conditions, we were again treated with great weather and the snow coverage
was outstanding! A big thank you must go to all the students who embraced a wonderful
opportunity that we offer here at Canobolas. They brought a positive attitude, perseverance
and determination to learn a new skill and made the trip very enjoyable for Mr Skein and Miss
Morrissey! Hope to see you all again next year!
CKC Cup will again be contested between Canobolas High
School, Kelso High School and Cowra High School in 2019. Students in
