SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR
DANCE REHEARSALS Our wonderful Schools Spectacular dancers have began learning choreography for
the big production next month. Student have been learning and rehearsing before
school and during lunch times. They have been learning choreography from videos
and also went to Blayney High School on Tuesday the 17th of October. The girls danced
for six hours with small breaks and worked super hard to learn all of the choreography.
Now they have the big job of polishing the movements and learning the big finale
sequence. Their next rehearsal is on Tuesday the 7th of November where they will
continue to learn more choreography and polish what they have learnt. Great job
dancers!
From the
Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of the School Community
Two weeks have come and gone since I was last in contact with you, and the time is flying
past at a rapid rate.
YEAR 12 GRAD
Year 12 students are rapidly coming to the end of their HSC exams and their final celebration is
approaching. Students and families are reminded that tickets are on sale from the Front
Office at a cost of $70 each. This is always an exceptional way to celebrate the end of
secondary education with our students, so please ensure that you purchase your tickets well in
advance.
YEAR 7 2018
Transition activities started this week for the incoming 2018 Year 7 students. They were involved
in a Scavenger Hunt around the school where they were able to learn where things are
located and who are some of the key personnel. There will be two more transition days before
the end of the year, including a half day with mini-lessons and a full day that will be run by
Sport and Recreation.
GIRLS ACADEMY OFFICIAL OPENING
On Thursday, 9th November, the school will host the official opening of The Girls Academy from
5pm in C Block. This is a community event and everyone is more than welcome to attend. For
further information please contact Nikita Mason, Director of The Girls Academy at the school.
50th ANNIVERSARY
As our 50th year starts to draw to a close, it is exciting to report that the pavers that we had on
sale have finally arrived. Our plan is to have these line the walkway into the school and
around the sculpture that was installed on our celebration weekend. This will then act as a
permanent reminder of our school community. If anyone is able to put us in touch with a
paving tradesman who could do this job for us, please let me know at the school.
I hope you have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with again in Week 6.
With my warmest regards
Kate Wootten

Last Friday night, students from the Big Picture Academy dressed up for dinner then made
their way to see the local production of Pirates of Penzance at the Orange Civic Theatre.
Students had an amazing time making the most of the live theatre experience, many of
whom had never had the opportunity to go before. A huge thank you goes to the Sally
Foundation who made this experience possible.
Out and About in Orange
It’s all been happening in Big Picture over the past couple of months with plenty of action to
report.
JACK, Year 11, our resident metal sculptor, anxiously awaits to sit his Year 12 Metal and
Engineering HSC exam. He is currently working with his teacher, Mr Marriott and building ‘firepits’
for the staff as Xmas gifts so will be busy in the weeks ahead. He also completed a two day
workshop only last weekend on Blacksmithing with Rob from Kilmarnock Forge, learning tips and
tricks around forging techniques and heating applications and hopes to start up his own small
business one day.
BRIDGETTE, Year 11, has been working on her self confidence and has certainly done herself
proud by attending #Fashtech workshops at the Orange Art gallery and creating an impressive
‘spine dress’ ready for the community exhibition. She also surprised herself by gaining the position
of Vice Captain for 2018 after giving an inspirational speech in front of the whole school
assembly. Furthermore, whilst successful in the captain venture she has also been busy writing
resumes and after numerous trials and nervous ‘waiting’ sessions, was offered a Hairdressing
apprenticeship for 2018 with ‘Tangled Hair and Beauty’.
LACHIE, Year 9, has been busy exploring the Edwardian era and showcased a very impressive
‘high tea’ as part of his exhibition workshop last term. Such delightful delicious treats were politely
devoured amongst Lords and Ladies at a highly impressive table decorated with delicacies
inspired by his talented offsider Gran. Every Tuesday the residents of Ascott Gardens look forward
to the activities coordinator turning up and entertaining them with his kind, caring nature and
tireless compassion. According to Margaret, he is like one of the family and they absolutely love
him. Congratulations also goes to Lachie, for he is in the process of setting up a School Based
Apprenticeship in Aged Care starting next year – a wonderful achievement for such a naturally
gifted young gentleman.
Wednesday afternoons have been a delight listening to the strumming sounds of Ben and Marge
singing out a tune in their fun loving guitar sessions. Weekly boxing sessions with both advisories
have also been a welcome relief for some students as part of a push to promote a positive well-
being and a great pitch to get outside into the fresh spring air of late.
In celebrating the warmer weather, Big Picture advisories both headed out to Federal Falls last
Wednesday for an action packed 4km bush walk. Those who participated were challenged by
many parts of the trek however showed great resilience and determination to keep going –
especially after they met a Mr Brown snake along the track!
We have also had the pleasure of entertaining many guests throughout the term. Geraldine from
the Sally Foundation on two occasions has popped in for a visit and was so impressed she
organised to spend a day with students chatting and talking about their passion projects and
helping them prepare for their exhibitions.
AND just recently we had the talented and very versatile Jo and Joanne, Big Picture film crew up
to interview students, Principals, advisors, community mentors and showcase student passions and
projects for the whole community to see. Thanks to the Sally Foundation we are hoping to share
this on our facebook page when it is finalised, so stay tuned and watch this space.
BIG PICTURE NEWS
ANZAC Memorial Centenary Soil Collection Project
On Wednesday 25th October, our newly elected school captains for 2018, Kane Mitchell
and Victoria Ruming, were honoured with an invitation to participate in an historical
event to commemorate the ANZAC Centenary.
As part of commemorating 100 years of ANZAC, Member for Orange, Mr Phil Donato,
hosted the Centenary of ANZAC Soil Collection at the Orange Lone Pine Memorial. The
program’s aim is to remember and pay recognition to those New South Wales
servicemen and women who served for Australia in World War 1.
Kane and Victoria represented TCRTHS to a very high standard, displaying the
leadership skills they are developing as our school leaders. Kane was also selected to do
an interview with WIN News, which aired on Wednesday night, and Victoria did an
interview for the Central Western Daily.
The soil collected on the day will be included in a permanent installation in the new Hall
of Service in the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney, to be opened in late 2018. It will
be displayed alongside soil collected from close to 1700 enlistment locations across the
state.
I would like to thank Local Member for Orange, Mr Phil Donato, for the invitation to be
part of such a fantastic event to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC.

STEM CENTRE NEWS Year 7 STEM
Over the last week, students have been exploring the wide world of STEM Careers. Part of this
exploration has included using Internet-based video conferencing technology to remotely
connect with an expert working in the field of Renewable Energy. Aruna works for Origin Energy
and has been working on large scale solar energy generation and trials of tidal power
generation. He shared his experiences with 7 STEM 2 and told us what career skills he needs to be
successful in a career like his (photo below). Thanks to the Beacon Foundation for facilitating this
for our school.
Following the workshop with Aruna, Year 7
students have been working on a hands-on
design challenge. In groups they have to
make a turbine that can capture wind energy
and use it to lift a tea bag up off the ground,
using a limited set of resources.
My Road mentoring with the Beacon
Foundation
This week, the Beacon Foundation provided
the opportunity for 15 Year 10 girls to connect
with mentors from businesses and corporations
based around Australia on a future careers
workshop. The mentors shared their
experiences, enquired about the girls future
career ambitions and workshopped the skills
that the girls already have and where they
could develop to reach their post-school
goals.

An edgy story that presents a society and its
groups. People are mentioned almost
randomly but they become clues in unpicking
the puzzle. Suddenly a major piece of
information is dwarfed by an even larger
event and the mystery becomes even more
puzzling. The main character is Miri, she was
selected, then offered a chance to join the
society. She leaves her past, alone now
aiming for the future, and when she meets
the rest of the crew, Lauren, Andrew and
Steen—her ex boyfriend—the tension rises.
So the 5th person and winner will get
$500,000.
So I give this wonderful book a 9 out of 10!

The Canobolas High U/16s’s League Tag team travelled to Grenfell to participate in
the annual League Tag carnival at Lawson Park. The girls started the day with a
convincing 20-0 win over Parkes Christian School, two tries to Erin Naden and a try each
to Bonnie Kennedy and Courtney Munday.
The team then faced Red Bend Catholic College where they were narrowly defeated
8-4, this was a fast paced game and really tested the Canobolas girls in defence.
Molong Central School was the next opponent for Canobolas, and they were too
good in defence, barely missing a tag all game running out winners 12-4. The final
game of the day was against Mudgee High School, and as we had only one substitute
all day in the heat, the girls ran out of legs, eventually going down 16-4.
The girls were fantastic representatives of Canobolas High School. Caitlin White and
Courtney Munday led from the front all day in both attack and defence. Erin Naden
was best and fairest for the team and Bonnie Kennedy was awarded the coaches
award.

Now that eisteddfod season is over, double sport dance has been open to anyone
and everyone who wants to have a go! Students have been working on their fitness
with team challenges, and working on their dance technique as well. Each week
students have also been making up dances in small groups or as class. We have
been moving through a variety of dance styles such as jazz, hip-hop, contemporary
and musical theatre. Students have been dancing to songs from Grease, Hairspray
and Annie. Students get the chance to choreograph their own steps and contribute
to mini group or class dances. Miss Lee has seen a huge improvements in some of
the dancers who have been working on their technique and strength.
On the 24th of October, an amazing group of Canobolas students set out to the
Orange Hockey Centre to assist with a hockey gala day that ran for local primary
schools. As ambassadors of the sport, they were placed in charge of teams where
their prime responsibility was to coach and mentor students.
They used their skills and expertise to help the day run smoothly and to share their
passion and knowledge for the game. The students really enjoyed being coaches for
the day and were instrumental in the gala day being a success. It provided a fantastic
opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and contribute to the local
community.
Our students represented Canobolas with both pride and passion. I would like to
thank the following students for doing an amazing job. I was extremely proud of them!
