NATIONAL CUP – INTO THE LAST EIGHT On Wednesday 6th February 2019, the Y11 boys football team had their biggest game of
the year and one of the biggest games in school history; a National Cup Last 16 match
against Cardinal Heenan of Liverpool.
The game was an up and down affair with us taking a 2-0 goal lead within 10 minutes. The
first goal was a great first time finish from George Turner after a fine through ball from Jared
Harlock. The second saw Sean McGurk score a great goal after pouncing onto a loose
ball from the goal keeper.
Heenan showed their class however, by pulling the game back to 2-2 by half time with
two outstanding goals. A fine individual goal from their centre forward and unstoppable
long range effort from their dangerous attacking left back.
The second half saw us be far more forward thinking and three goals in 15 minutes put us
in the lead. Sean McGurk got his second of the day after good work from James Clarke.
George Turner then added to his first half goal with a cool finish from inside the box. Beck
Halliwell Booth ended the goal scoring start to the second half by bundling home from a
McGurk corner.
Heenan came back again however and scored two more goals to make it 5-4 and an
extremely nervy last five minutes. However, everyone pulled together and a huge
defensive effort in the last 5 minutes saw us hold on and get a deserved, historic victory.
This win sees the Y11’s get to the last 8 in the country which is an unprecedented
achievement.
Over 500 schools enter the National Cup at the start of the year and to be one of the last
8 is huge. This is also the furthest a Rainhill school team have ever progressed in the
competition.
We now play Ruskin Priory from South Lincolnshire in the quarter finals at home and will be
hoping for another great turnout to cheer the lads on!
Congratulations to our team players:
Liam Duffy, Luke Gill, Jack Ellis, Charlie Roberts, Ben Sabatina-Fraiser, Beck Halliwell-Booth,
James Clarke, Jared Harlock, Sean McGurk, Daniel Barrow, George Turner, Rory Potts,
Oliver Judge, Lee Myers and Ben Eccleston.
Mr Rachi, Second in PE.

YEAR 8 HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY Holocaust Memorial Day is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people
murdered in the Holocaust under Nazi Persecution and in the genocides which
followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.
On Wednesday 30th January, all Year 8 students enjoyed an assembly presented by
Eric Cohen who is a member of the Holocaust Memorial Trust.
Eric explained his personal story regarding his Jewish family who were killed during the
Holocaust. He was a charming man and the students loved his presence.
Students then studied other examples of World Genocide and took time to reflect on
the devastation and suffering caused by persecution and genocide. Some thoughtful
messages were written and students were respectful throughout the day.
Thank you to all students for your mature and respectful behaviour.
Eric was very impressed with our school and our students.
Mrs Whitehead, Head of Citizenship.
YEAR 8 RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITY DAY On Wednesday 30th January, as well as Holocaust activities, Year 8 students
completed lessons on Rights and Responsibility. Year 8 students spent the day off
timetable investigating our Human Rights according to the United Nations and a case
study on Human Trafficking.
Students understood the need for Human Rights and studied others cultures who lives
are less fortunate. Many students were surprised to discover the horrible lives of some
Indian children who are held captive as slaves and are forced to work in horrendous
conditions.
Mrs Whitehead, Head of Citizenship.
