National LibraryWeek Slated ForThe VermillionPublic LibraryVERMILLION — Libraries across

the country will be celebrating Na-tional Library Week during the weekof April 8-14. This year’s theme is“You belong @ your library!” TheVermillion Public Library will behosting several special events, espe-cially for children.

There will be two after schoolprograms for elementary students,each beginning at 3:45 p.m. and con-cluding at 5 p.m. On Tuesday, April10, there will be a Book Carnivalwith games, activities, snacks andprizes. On Thursday, April 12, theUSD Reading Council will be pre-senting a special program with activ-ities based on the book “Wild AboutBooks” by Judy Sierra.

Throughout the week, preschoolstory time participants are asked tobring a stuffed animal with them tostory time. The children will begoing home after we read “When Li-brary Lights Go Out” and completea craft project, but the animals areinvited to stay for a Library Sleep-over. Children may pick up theirstuffed animals the next day, andlearn all about their adventures inthe library after dark.

The National Library Week activi-ties spill over into the followingweek, too. The Young Adult BookClub will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday,April 15, to discuss “The HungerGames.” Copies of “Catching Fire”will be distributed for next month’smeeting.

For the adults, the Friends of theLibrary will host their annual Liter-ary Luncheon on Thursday, April 19.Serving begins at 11:30 a.m. The spe-cial guest speaker this year is DianeGubbels, who will share her “Storiesof Inspiration.” Diane is a talenteddesigner and appliqué artist and herstories will unfold right along withthe quilts she will display. KANSAS appeared on the Bill-board charts for more than 200weeks throughout the 1970s and1980s and played to sold-out arenasand stadiums throughout NorthAmerica, Europe and Japan. In fact,“Carry On Wayward Son” was theNo. 2 most played track on classicrock radio in 1995 and went to No. 1in 1997.

The band has produced eightgold albums, three sextuple-plat-inum albums (“Leftoverture,”“Point of Know Return,” “Best of”),one platinum live album (”Two forthe Show”) and a million-sellinggold single, “Dust in the Wind.”

In a press release, original mem-ber and drummer Phil Ehart saidKANSAS enjoys the college sym-phony concerts and performingwith young musicians.

“KANSAS and all the school sym-phonies just hit it off big time! Theonly people having more fun thanus were all the students playing onstage with us!” he said. “And con-sidering all the money that wasraised to help the music depart-ments, everyone considered it areal success. We know this year willbe bigger and better!”

The band — which in additionto Ehart, is comprised ofsinger/keyboardist Steve Walsh,guitarist Rich Williams, bassist BillyGreer, and violinist David Ragsdale— continues to tour in front oflarge and enthusiastic audiencesand to this day remains a fixture onclassic rock radio.

Rognstad said the USD orches-tra has found the KANSAS musicnot only classical but also challeng-ing.

“I’m surprised how much themusic changes throughout eachpiece,” he said. “It’s very complex,but I expect things to go quitesmoothly. We have a very good con-ductor, and these are pop classics.It’s really good music.”

Farrell likewise believes theband’s music has withstood thetest of time.

“They are a famous band, and Ithink it will be a great opportunityfor the students to play with a his-toric, legendary band,” he said.“Even if there are generational is-sues (for the USD students), it wasgreat music at the time and it’s stillgreat 30 or 40 years later.”
