In October the Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 137 and Carrier Air Wing One (CVW 1) participat-ed in Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMTUEX) onboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65). After two years in the shipyards the Enterprise Strike Group has almost completed their one-year workup cycle.
The Rooks started work-ups in February with Air Wing Fallon taking advan-tage of the high fidelity training opportunities that the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center (NSAWC) provides and becoming familiar with the rest of the air wing squadrons. After several weeks of training, culminating in a simulat-ed roll back of enemy air defense, the Rooks came home and prepared for a deck certification and inde-
pendent steaming exercise on the Enterprise.
In May, the Rooks left for the east coast, home basing at Naval Air Station Oceana for daily trips to the Enterprise during carrier qualifications. Later, they flew out to the boat and practiced “normal” carrier operations, including cyclic operations. The Rooks came back home to NAS
Whidbey Island for a few weeks and then flew back out to the east coast to go to sea again in August for tai-lored ship training availabil-ity or TSTA for more cyclic operation practice and large force strike planning and execution.
VAQ-137 came home again during the middle of September, but only for a few weeks as they had
to leave again in October for COMTUEX. During COMTUEX the air wing demonstrated that they were ready for the rigors of deployment and passed their Blue Water Certification. CVW 1 achieved the max-imum score in seven out of eight categories, putting them one step closer to their upcoming deployment.
Shortly after Thanksgiving the Rooks depart for Joint Task Force exercises to con-duct additional training with other elements of the strike group. After a three-year wait the Rooks are looking forward to being ready for combat operations instead of just preparing for them. VAQ-137 and Carrier Air Wing One will be “Ready on Arrival”.
