Since the 1960’s, more and more Jews have gone searching for spirituality outside of Judaism. Many began exploring Eastern religions, especially Buddhism, hoping to find in the ashram what they were unable to find in the synagogue. Today there is a small but significant subset of Jews who remain Jewish but who have also incorporated Eastern spiritual and meditative practice into their lives. What they probably don’t know – indeed what many Jewish profes-sionals have only recently discovered – is that very similar practices have long been part of Jewish tradition; they’ve just been a well-kept secret. Recently I have begun the study and practice of this Jewish spiritual path, known as Mussar.

For centuries, Mussar has provided an illuminating, approachable, and highly practical set of teachings and practices for cultivating personal growth and spiritual realization in the midst of day-to-day life. It might best be described as “Jewish spiritual ethics” and has been prac-ticed for centuries by people who sought to cultivate and strengthen the qualities of the inner mensch.

Many of you have asked me about spirituality and Judaism. Beginning in January, in conjunc-tion with the Mussar Institute (www.tmi.com) I will be teaching a class dedicated to learning and practicing Mussar, called Seeking Everyday Holiness. There are no prerequisites, and no Hebrew is required. It will be small class, and I invite you to join us as we explore together, in a safe and caring environment, what the Jewish tradition has to teach us about the traits of humility, gratitude, equanimity, patience, order and honor, among others – and discover how you can improve these qualities in your own life.

This 20 week course will begin with an introduction on January 20, then continue on January 27 and then every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, from 7:30-9:00pm, ending on May 26 (10 sessions).

Class size is limited to 14 people, and pre-registration is needed. The cost of the program is $90.00, and includes a copy of the text we will be using as well as all additional materials. It promises to be a wonderful, enlightening, and spiritual journey in which, through both group meetings and personal study and practice, we will explore a set of teachings that will help you find your way toward becoming your best self.

Shalom!

I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that your Chanukah will be filled with light! In Religious School here at TBA Tamir and his 6th grade classmates are learning about American Jewish History (or maybe they are studying Jewish American History) and learning about lifecycle events. One Sunday on the way home the conversation went something like:

Me: How was school today? Tamir: Fine. Me: What did you learn? Tamir: We learned about death and history, nothing Jewish.

The good news is that I am an insider and I know that this is not true. I know that in order to understand American Jewish history first you need to understand American history and that the Jewish stuff was coming. Then the next week they discussed Thanksgiving, watched “Molly’s Pilgrim” and Tamir was delighted to discover that the first Thanksgiving was connected to the celebration of Sukkot and the Pilgrims’ way of looking to the Bible for inspiration and freedom of religion. He is starting to see the Jewish stuff in American Jewish/Jewish American history.

Now I am beginning my preparations for Chanukah and realize a similar connec-tion. Chanukah is the celebration of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabees had regained control from the Syrian-Greeks. How would they celebrate? They too looked to our ancient texts, stories, and traditions to find a way to express their renewed freedom of religion. What they found was two-fold. First that the original dedication of the Temple was an 8 day ceremony and second that they had not been able to celebrate Sukkot (a week long festival) and that they wanted to catch up.

I share all of this because this is what I think Reform Judaism is about. For me it is about studying what our tradition tells us and then figuring out how those tradi-tions fit into my life and the life of my family. It is about the freedom to be Jewish in America, in Israel, anywhere! It is about the freedom to express myself, feel a connection to my community, and have a relationship with God that is comfortable for me while respecting everyone else’s decisions.

Many of you have begun to share on Facebook your like/dislike of what commer-cialism has done to holidays. I think that this is most difficult in December when we are trying to celebrate Chanukah in the midst of all that is Christmas hoopla. You have seen the new book “Mensch on the Bench” which is a Chanukah version of “Elf on the Shelf” and without reading it are worried about what it means. You have seen the “menorah tree” and wonder what the world is coming to. For some this is not a new conversation as our neighbors come together for menorah and tree lightings in the town square. But this is all part of living in America, and maybe the world, and finding that balance where you are happy with who you are and

ZEETY: An update from our Director of Youth Engagement, Melissa Frey

Temple Beth Abraham’s ZEETY youth group is off to a great year! We had several highly successful events and there are still more to come!

On September 29, I formally introduced myself to TBA teens with a Munchkin Meet and Greet and an opportunity for teens to take a “silly selfie.” During our regular Monday night pizza dinner and armed with 100 Munchkins and informa-tion about upcoming events, the TBA teens and I had fun getting to know each other while trying on silly props and taking selfies. The teens were given informa-tion about our BarbeClue event and a chance to check out some of the course offerings from WJTLI (Westchester Jewish Teen Learning Initiative).

On Sunday, October 19 ZEETY kicked off the year with a “BarbeClue.” Thirty four teens met at TBA for barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, a few getting to know you ice breakers, and then went on a hunt around the Temple for clues to solve a “Who Done It” style mystery. This was a great opportunity for some of our teens to get acquainted with our program and get to know each other in a more social setting.

On Monday October 27, ZEETY surprised our Religious School students with some good natured competition in our TBA Olympics. Teens were divided into 4 teams- Brazil, China, Germany and Israel- and competed for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. Our 8-12th graders had a great time with various obstacle courses, over/under, scooter, and wheel barrow relays, cup stacking, and hula hoop competi-tions. What a great opportunity to introduce our teens who missed the BarbeClue event to the ZEETY program and to get a taste for the fun and camaraderie that ZEETY has to offer. All of these youth group events are planned for and run by TBA teens. ZEETY gives our teens a chance to take leadership roles in our Temple and serve as role models for our younger teens.

The NFTY Fall Kallah took place on November 14-16 at URJ-Camp Kutz in Warwick, NY. This was a weekend long retreat with teens from Westchester, Long Island, New York City, and Fairfield, CT. It is a great opportunity for teens to celebrate Shabbat with friends from TBA, new friends, and even reconnect with friends from summer camp. If your teen is interested in participating, Kallah happens 4 times a year: November, January 9-11, 2015, March 27-29, and April 24-26. Most are open to teens in grades 9-12. The March Kallah will also be a Junior Youth Group event open to 6th and 7th graders. At Spring Kallah in April we will welcome our 8th graders. Please note that ZEETY events are open to all TBA teens regardless of whether your teens attend religious school.

For December, we are planning a Chanukah bowling event. Look for a final date to be announced soon!

Ingredients3 eggs, beaten1/2 cup milk1/2 tsp vanilla extract1/4 cup sugar1 cup all-purpose flour1/2 tsp baking powder1/4 tsp saltcanola oil10 slices white breadany flavor jamconfectioners’ sugar

Directions1. In a bowl, stir together eggs, milk,

vanilla, and sugar until well blended and sugar is dissolved. In a separate bowl, mix flour with baking powder and salt. Gradually stir flour mixture into egg mixture until no lumps remain. Set aside.

2. Heat oil in deep-fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

3. Make sandwiches with the bread, spreading jam evenly in the center.

Trim away crusts, and cut each sandwich into quarters, wiping away any excess jam. Dip each quarter into batter, coating completely. Working in batches to avoid overcrowding, fry sandwiches for 1 to 3 minutes, or until puffy and golden brown. Drain and cool on a paper towel-lined wire rack. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Serve warm.

Israeli jelly doughnuts, called sufganiyot, bear a strong resemblance to the Viennese confections called krapfen—the recipe was probably brought to Israel by Austrian Jews who immigrated in the mid-20th century. Being, like latkes, fried in oil, the doughnuts were a perfect fit for Hanukkah’s culinary symbolism (fried foods commemorate the Biblical miracle of a small amount of sacred lamp oil burning in the Temple for eight nights rather than the expected one). They were soon adopted by the young country as a holiday favorite.

Joseph Levy, an authority on the Jewish communities in Arab countries, will speak about a subject he has been passionate about for the past thirty-five years, and one that he feels is often not given enough attention.

He will begin with a brief modern history of Jews from Arab countries, and then focus on Egypt, where he was born. Questions and discussion will follow.

Mr. Levy has lectured at synagogues and Jewish centers throughout New York and New Jersey and has been well received.
