PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Welcome I would like to sincerely welcome everyone back to what will be an exciting year of learning for our students. We finished 2018 greatly appreciative of the community support for the school expressed through cards, emails and gifts.

2019 Newsletter Again this year, the newsletter will come out each week on Fridays ready for a relaxing weekend read and will include diary dates and a list of the notes sent home that week. The Skoolbag app is still our primary way of communicating with families and all new families are asked to download the new app to their phones to access the newsletter and messages (see instructions attached).

Student Enrolments Our total student enrolments for 2019 are 621 allowing us to form 25 classes across the school. Even so we have used school funds carried over from previous years to form a 26

th class reducing the numbers in most

classes. The students have settled well into their new classes. To help parents locate their child’s classroom all rooms have an orange sign outside the doorways indicating the class name.

Student Awards Department assemblies will begin in week 3. Students should submit their trade-up awards to the office by the day before an assembly. Any awards received on the day of an assembly will be given out at the assembly the following week.

P & C Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting for the school P&C will be held on Tuesday 19 February from 7.30pm in the school library and everyone is welcome to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and friends of the school to come together and plan for the year ahead.

Elections will be held for executive positions and expressions of interest for other voluntary roles will be welcomed.

Incidents at School From time to time throughout the year, conflict between students may arise. I would like to stress that under no circumstances are parents to approach another child around a school related incident. Parents are asked to let the teachers or executive know and we will investigate the incident from both sides and make a decision in the best interests of both students. Public School Email: 2047 Specialist Programs In 2019 we will continue to use external providers with one program each term to cover music (Term 1), athletics (Term 2), dance (Term 3) and gymnastics (Term 4). These programs address specific areas of the curriculum and bring high-level expertise to the school. The external providers are specialists in their field and are able to compact the time for students to learn the skills required allowing the class teachers more class time to devote to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and the other key learning areas. Thank you in advance for your financial support to enable these programs to take place.

2019 School Swimming Carnival Our annual swimming carnival will be held at Drummoyne Swim Centre on Friday 22 February. All year 3-6 students will be attending and capable Year 2 swimmers who turn 8 this year. Notes will be handed out next week. Students may consider some additional swimming practice over the next few weeks.

With best wishes for the year ahead, Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

It has been a delight to see our students and staff so enthusiastic and productive in their first week of school.

Thank you to parents who have been prompt in keeping us informed of any changes to contact details and medical information. If you have a changed address, phone number or obtained any health information over the break, please ensure you contact the office so we can advise teachers and update our records.

In the coming weeks I look forward to sharing some of the wonderful learning opportunities that are taking place in our classrooms. Watch this space!

PRIMARY ETHICS – TEACHERS NEEDED

Dear Parents and Carers, Could you be an ethics teacher for Drummoyne Public School?

Some of our current ethics teachers moved on at the end of last year and we are seeking volunteers so that all of our classes can continue.

Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a two day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers should have an interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available on Friday morning each week.

In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure. Unfortunately without more volunteers, some children will miss out on these valuable lessons.

If you are looking for an opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our school, please get in touch with Nicky Batt on 040978870 or [email protected], or visit www.primaryethics.com.au.

BACK TO SCHOOL ONLINE SAFETY TIPS

It’s that time of year again. The holiday season is over and we’re being bombarded with back-to-school messages - at the supermarket, on our social media feeds and on the TV. New shoes, school uniforms, stationery and devices are being purchased by busy parents trying to juggle between family time, final holiday activities, going back to work and getting kids ready for the start a new school year. While these items help ensure your child can participate in class and sport activities, the back-to-school period can also be a great time to review their online safety and get ahead of any issues that may come up through the year. Some tips to get you started, include:

Sharent responsibly — be mindful about sharing your child’s first day of school and other milestones on social media. Think about who can see the photos and what information you

Page 3: FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1 2019 TERM 1 WEEK 1 Respect Responsibility Resilience TERM 1 WEEK 2 · Respect – Responsibility – Resilience FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1 2019 TERM 1 WEEK 1 TERM 1 WEEK

may be giving away, because even a school crest on a student’s uniform can say a lot about where they spend their time. Asking your child if it’s okay to share their photo is also a great way to help grow their understanding of consent and respect. See more information about sharenting.

Know the signs for cyberbullying — school can be a particularly challenging time for kids, especially if they’re being bullied. Our complaints show most cyberbullying stems from the school yard. So watch out for signs that your child may be affected, like being secretive with their online activities, avoiding school or social outings, a decline in school grades, or a sudden change in friendship groups. See more information about how to help your child experiencing cyberbullying.

Set screen time limits — our research shows more than half of parents are concerned about the amount of time their kids spend online. With screens increasingly being used at school and home, it’s important to ensure your child has a healthy balance of offline and online time. Setting screen-free zones in the home and negotiating switch off times are useful ways to do this. Don’t forget, quality over quantity! See more information about managing screen time.

Use tools — parental controls on smartphones, TVs and computers can help limit your child seeing inappropriate content and help manage their time online. Make sure the privacy settings on their apps and games are turned on and help show them how to block and report people online. See more information about using parental controls and privacy and reporting tools.

Stay engaged — as soon as we hand our child a device, we should be talking to them about the dos and don’ts of the online world. It’s also important to let them know we’ll be there to support them if anything goes wrong. There is no substitute for taking an interest in our children’s online lives from an early age, to help establish strong foundations and open lines of communication. See more information about keeping your children safe online.

Anaphlaxis (Severe allergic reactions) Next week all staff will receive the manadatory CPR and Anaphylaxis training update. It is important that school staff are confident about the management of students who have been identified by a medical practitioner as being at risk of an anaphylactic reaction (eg to bee stings, peanuts etc). Anaphylaxis is an uncommon occurrence. In most cases, anaphylactic reactions can be prevented with precautions to avoid the known allergen. When anaphylactic reactions occur an emergency response is required.

Please advise the school in writing if your child suffers from anaphylaxis.

P&C NEWS

Hi Parents and Friends of Drummoyne Public School,

Welcome to everyone for the 2019 year. We trust you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We would also like to extend a very warm welcome to families who are new to the school.

As many of you would be aware, the Drummoyne Public School P&C is an active organisation bringing together parents and friends of the school to assist in the running of the canteen, uniform shop as well as organise and run certain events such as the Activitython and annual School Fete. Without this support and commitment from the community, many of these great events and services would not occur. In addition, all funds raised are put to good use in the areas of specialist teaching resources, school classroom & technology resources and playground improvements.

The P&C meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm in the school library. Our first meeting for the year will be the AGM, to be held Tuesday 19 February at 7:30pm. We would encourage you to attend this event. Elections will be held for committee executive positions as well as our important sub-committee roles.

Again, welcome to the new year! Your P&C Exec

Starting school is a major step in a child’s educational journey. It is made easier when children are prepared for the transition.

Children’s milestone events such as starting school always bring a mix of emotions for both children and parents, with excitement, anticipation and nervousness being the most common. If either you or your child is feeling anxious about the big event then the following tips will help ease the tension and ensure your child makes the best possible start to their school life:

1. Be positive about the year aheadSchool starters generally take their cues from their parents so your attitude to school, your child’s teacher and learning can set the scene for a positive year ahead. Be positive and confident that your child will fit in and succeed and you increase the likelihood that they will do so.

2. Tell them what to expectOne of the best ways to ease a child’s anxiety is to provide information about what they can expect at school. Over the school holidays, reinforce what they have already learned about lining up, play areas, routines and other aspects of school they may have experienced during the transition program. In this way your child will be better prepared for what happens when real school starts.

3. Develop your child’s independence skillsChildren with age-appropriate self-sufficiency skills generally find starting school much easier than children who have always had everything done for them. In the months leading up to the start of school make sure your child knows: how to open and close their lunchbox; how to pack their bag or backpack; how to use the toilet independently; and how to pack away their belongings. Practise eating play lunch and school lunch with your child. Also help them develop the habit of packing up their toys, their dinner plates and their clothes. These simple habits soon become ingrained patterns that will help maximise your child’s long-term success at school.

4. Explain what school expects from themLet your child know that being at school requires some behaviours that may be very different from those required at home. For instance, there will most likely be different rules and routines. They will probably have to work with many more children, they may have to put up their hand to get a teacher’s attention and they may have to wait their turn to be heard. Help them understand that in a classroom they may not be able to do things when they

want to – which can come as a shock to some children. These lessons about fitting in will help your child adapt quickly to their new surroundings.

5. Teach social etiquetteSchool requires children to make friends with other children and also to work and play alongside others. Take the time to explain and role-play the social etiquette that will help your child succeed socially. “Jeremy, when you want to play with others you need to say, ‘Excuse me! Can I join in your game?’” Another way for children to learn social etiquette is through play dates, family gatherings and family mealtimes.

6. Familiarise them with the school environmentThe scale of the physical environment of a school can be daunting for young children so consider spending some time at school during the holidays so they become familiar with the playground and the buildings. Also make the journey to and from school a number of times prior to the start of school so that they are comfortable when they go on the first day.

7. Develop a goodbye routineDespite the best start to the school year there will always be those days when a child just doesn’t want to go to school. Tears and tantrums are common for many school starters. It helps in these less-than-pleasant situations if you have a goodbye routine that includes a smile, a kiss and/or hug and leaving without looking back. If saying goodbye in the morning continues to be a struggle, seek the advice and help of your child’s teacher.

8. Don’t forget to develop a hello routine too!Once school has finished some children just want to relax without talking about school, while others may unload about the events of the day. Follow their lead but regardless of whether your child opens up or closes down make sure they have some downtime so they can relax and unwind. If your child always presents a tale of woe about school (“I hate school. I’m not going back”), be patient and remember that children can be faulty observers and don’t always see things as they really are. Help them look for the positive or good parts of their day by asking questions such as “What did you enjoy about today?”

At times of transition it’s worth remembering some children adapt easily to new routines and new surroundings, while others may take many weeks to feel comfortable with going to school. If the latter is the case for your child, then patience, consistency and exposure to affirming parent networks may be the best allies that you and your child can have.
