"Vacation" Wins Jug For Coleman By Bill Finley DELAWARE, Ohio–Adriano Sorella sat in his car as the second and third eliminations for the Little Brown Jug were taking place The co-owner of Vegas Vacation needed to gather his thoughts after his gelding had powered to a win in the first elim. For him, it was a time to get away from the hubbub around him, a time to reflect. "I was sitting there, cooling off and thinking abut this," he said "I started to think ‘it's going to happen. We're going to do this.'" He had every reason to believe. It was as if the Gods of the Little Brown Jug were intent on rewarding Vegas Vacation's trainer, Casie Coleman. All week, she had been the race's biggest cheerleader, something the Jug needed after the announcement that the wonderful 3-year-old Captaintreacherous wasn't going to show up. The Captain team played the role of Scrooge and Coleman was only too happy to be the anti-Scrooge, so enthusiastic about this race that sometimes she seemed ready to burst. So Coleman won the first elim with Vegas Vacation and the second with Lucan Hanover. She gave someone else (Resistance Futile) a chance in the third elim and then drew posts one (Lucan Hanover) and two (Vegas Vacation) for the final. "Drawing the one and two hole in the final felt pretty good," she said. Was she leading a charmed life or what? So Vegas Vacation, who Coleman had said all along was the horse she thought gave her he best chance of winning, completed the story with a two-length win in he Jug Final over Urbanite Hanover in 1:50. Lucan Hanover was third. It was Coleman's second straight Jug victory (she won last year with Michael's Power) and she became the first trainer to win the race in back to back years since Tom Artandi turned the trick in 1988 and 1989. It was the first Little Brown Jug win for driver Brian Sears. "Winning the Jug is pretty awesome no matter which way you do it," she said. "Winning it the first time was absolutely unreal and now we've done it two years in a row. So far every time I've been to Delaware I've come away with something, two Jugettes, two Jugs. I kind of like coming here." Throughout the afternoon, Jug Day was going like it always goes. The track was lightning fast and speed was dominant. But the Jug elims didn't go according to the script. Sears had Vegas Vacation sitting chilly in fourth in his elim, a good place to be after Lonewolf Currier and Eddie Sweat sizzled through fractions of 25.2 and 53.3. With the pacesetters falling apart, Vegas Vacation swept to a 2 1/4-length win. With Dave Miller driving, Lucan Hanover looped the field from sixth to give Coleman two straight elim winners. It was more of the same when Resistance Futile was third early, took the lead approaching the final turn and then drew off to an impressive 5 1/2-length win at 24-1. Between the elims and the final Coleman was a bit concerned. Despite the win she was not happy with the way Vegas Vacation had negotiated the turns and knew that was because the gelding has foot problems. So she decided to make a shoeing change, taking off the aluminum plates and going with steel shoes. "I was worried about a couple of things," she said. "Changing the shoes on a horse with sore feet between races is the last thing you want to do because you have to put nails in his feet. Jug win with Vegas Vacation

Viva Vegas. "Vacation" Wins Jug For Coleman

By Bill Finley DELAWARE, Ohio–Adriano Sorella sat in his car as thesecond and third eliminations for the Little Brown Jug weretaking place The co-owner of Vegas Vacation needed togather his thoughts after his gelding had powered to a win inthe first elim. For him, it was a time to get away from thehubbub around him, a time to reflect. "I was sitting there, cooling off and thinking abut this," hesaid "I started to think ‘it's going to happen. He had everyreason to believe. Itwas as if the Godsof the Little BrownJug were intent onrewarding VegasVacation's trainer,Casie Coleman. Allweek, she had beenthe race's biggestcheerleader, something the Jug

needed after the announcement that the wonderful3-year-old Captaintreacherous wasn't going to show up. about half an hour. We were very fortunate he was in thefirst heat because that gave me enough time to change hisshoes and ice him." Though none of the elim winners are typically quick off thegate it seemed logical that one or the other would try to cutthe mile, usually the way the Jug is won. Instead, YannickGingras, driving Urbanite Hanover out of the four postgunned for the lead and was determined not to let anyonetake it away from him. Lucan Hanover sat second andSears let Vegas Vacation settle into third. "Yannick was going down the road no matter what," Millersaid. Sears pulled as the field approached the wire the first timeto challenge Urbanite Hanover. He got by that one fairlyeasily before the field hit the final turn and all but had therace won at the top of the stretch.

"He's a bigstrong horse thatcan take a lot ofair," said Sears."He can race offthe pace and hehas a good kick.He was ready togo. I had moretrouble on theturns than thestraightaway but

once I got him on the straightaways I got him going, then Icould rate him on the outside and not really have to pushhim through the turns." Resistance Futile broke near the three-quarter mark andappeared to impede Lucan Hanover, who wound up third. "I think he would have won," Miller said. "CoreyCallahan's horse made a break in front of him. I had tocheck him pretty good then and lost a bunch of ground." Vegas Vacation paid $3.40 to win in the Jug final. VegasVacation is by Bettor's Delight and was purchased as ayearling at Lexington for $32,000. Sorella picked up a nice chunk of change in winning theJug but the money is not going to last long. Prior to lastyear's Metro he vowed he would take Coleman and hercrew to Las Vegas for a vacation if the horse won. VegasVacation didn't come through that night, but Sorella said hewould now treat the team because of the Jug victory. Hesaid he would arrange for 45 to 50 people to go to LasVegas later this year and that he would foot all theexpenses. It wasn't immediately clear if Sears was going to be invitedbut they ought to bring him along. He is, after all, the manwith the magic touch and maybe that can rub off on some ofthe others at the crap tables, etc, Coming off one of thepoorer years of his career, he seems to be winningeverything in sight, He has won the Hambletonian, the Jugand the Battle of the Brandywine, where Sunshine Beachhanded Captaintreacherous his only loss on the year. "It's been a particularly fun year because it started out witha particularly stressful decision that I made when choosing

to race at Yonkers over the Meadowlands," he said. "Ididn't know how the year would go. I just decided not toworry about it. If it happened it happened. If it didn't it didn't.Once I kind of let go of everything things started rolling." Coleman has a lot to think about over the next fewweeks. She will take Vegas Vacation to Lexington and gearup for the 9-28 Bluegrass and another meeting withCaptaintreacherous. "The Captain is still the king," she said. "He is theabsolute king. I have never beaten him yet but I am suregoing to try to beat him." And it's never too early to start thinking about the 2014Jug and three straight. She pointed to two horses shethought she could win next year's Jug with, Twin BTenacious and For A Bettor Time. ‘”Those are the two you'll probably see her next year,”she said. If not them, it will be somebody. For Casie Colemanloves the Little Brown Jug. And the Little Brown Jug lovesher.

Dean Towers’s Jug Day Diary

I tried to work today at my real job today. I try to work myreal job every Jug day. But I just can't to seem to get muchwork done. Today, just like most others, I watched thefestivities from 10AM until closing time, and here are mynotes, that you may (or may not!) find interesting...

10AM - John Campbell Talks My day started with handicapping, along with a taste ofthe Little Brown Jug speaker series. At 10AM, JohnCampbell was a guest and he pulled no punches. Whetherspeaking about the sport in general, its races, how it ispresented to bettors, or how slot money is distributed, hewas honest and authentic.

I was a little surprisedhe addressed the topicof hock kicking, whichhas been going onwithout much penalty(outside Ontario, that is,where after customercomplaints on whippingbetween the legs, stifleshots, and booting wereaddressed forcibly in2010) for a number of

years now in harness racing. John mentioned that 'there'san easy way to fix it, give a ten day suspension and it willstop'. He also relayed to the general public who have beencomplaining about it, that it is not kicking, but scaring thehorses. That too is a hot topic, because scaring animals toperform is not socially acceptable like it was years ago.Circuses have been banned from some cities because they"scare" animals to perform, and governments have gotteninvolved in regulating them. Rodeo, once a staple onNetwork television, is gone, in part, because "scaring" ahorse or cow to buck is also unacceptable. People in harness racing often say "we should have takencare of "X" 20 years ago". Our sport should probably gettheir head out of the sand on this issue.2PM - Boom I The first big win of the day happened with Jug-dayfixtures, the aforementioned John Campbell, and trainerBob McIntosh. The homebred son of Ponder (do you evernotice how the Ponders look like Ponder?), On GoldenPonder dazzled in a world record performance. If you hadany question about the racing surface, there was none afterthat effort!3:30PM - Boom II The second shocker of the day was Maven. Handicapperswere wondering if she was going to get back to form after afew subpar (for her) efforts. Game, set and match to themare. She was 5-2 but should've been 1-9; she trotted to aworld record and she looked amazing doing it. For keepingher so sound and happy after two years of tough racing, theconnections, in my opinion, should be really proud.3:49PM - Another World Record Pet Rock and A Rocknroll Dance really put on a showwith the former setting an amazing speed badge of 148.1. IfJohn Campbell was worried about feet out of stirrups for thehealth of the sport, he probably didn't like the actions of aleft foot in this race. 4:54 PM - Eliminations Begin! Jug Eliminations are sometimes snorefests, especially

when a good speed horse draws a good post, but theseones were anything but. Vegas Vacation took advantage ofa hot pace and a stopping Lonewolf Currier, and similarsituation happened in elimination two, with Lucan Hanover. While Coleman was beaming, trainers Kevin McDermottand Nifty Norman must have been shaking their heads. Inelimination three, Sunfire Blue Chip, off a suspect line, putthe hammer down and also stopped on the front end. Resistance Futile, for Blair Burgess, was marvelous invictory. These eliminations were eminently interesting. In real time, the Jug Final is very anticipated by everyoneI am talking to. For the first time that anyone can remember,no pure speed horse has won an elimination, and this couldopen up the final to someone willing to take a speed try,one might think. In what I think is an interesting point, whenthe post draw was made a sharp comment on twitter said "Ihope the Jug allows AE's in the future, because everyoneknew Sunfire Blue Chip was scratching from the final." 6:41 - The "Final" Although Yannick Gingras tried to make it interesting, thecream rose to the top in the second heat. Vegas Vacation -arguably the second best three year old this season - tookhome all the marbles. Another Jug Day is in the books, and it was as entertainingas ever; pure, harness racing. I hope you enjoyed yours as Idid mine.

Another World Record For Pet Rock

DELAWARE, Ohio--Already a world record holder on afive-eighths track, Pet Rock picked up another hugeaccomplishment yesterday at Delaware, beating rival ARocknroll Dance in a sensational 1:48.1 mile in the $51,250Winbak Pace.

The timeshattered the worldrecord for any ageor sex on ahalf-mile track, which had been1:49 and wasshared by threehorses, Bolt TheDuer, Ponder andJet Laag. In PetRock's prior start, the Jim EwartMemorial at Scioto,

he went in 1:47.2, setting the all age record on afive-eighths track. "This happened here at Delaware, so it means a lot tome...definitely means a lot," said trainer Virgil Morgan Jr.who is based in Ohio. Only five were entered but it was more or less atwo-horse race. With Pet Rock drawing inside of A

Maven

Rocknroll Dance it seemed that his best chance to win wasto cut the mile. Dave Miller left with Pet Rock but TimTetrick, driving A Rocknroll Dance, was not content to sitback and quickly seized the lead. Miller waited, wheeled outfor the drive and stormed past A Rocknroll Dance to win bya neck. He won despite not getting the best trip. "With that post I was trying to go down the road," Millersaid. "But you never know for sure until the gate opens howthe race is going to unfold. If Tim slowed it down any I wasgoing to retake." Morgan admitted he was concerned with the way the racewas unfolding. "I can't lie, I was a little concerned because we became avictim of his fractions and we wanted to cut the mile," hesaid. "It was just that in the first turn there were no holes. Itwas really tight and David made his decision to turn himloose. Tim did keep moving so that helped. I think that's acredit to the horse, to have to come off the turn and win therace that way as opposed to cutting it. He is just a realversatile horse. He has done it every way and I can't sayenough about him." Pet Rock paid $3.20 and the fractions were 26, 53.3 and1:21. Pet Rock will head next to the Red Mile, where the goalswill include adding the world record on a mile track to hislong list of feats.

Maven is Back

DELAWARE, Ohio–Mavenhad been relegated to second-string status in the JonasCzernyson barn as stablemateD’Orsay had been in top form, but the Glidemaster mare lookedlike her old self yesterday as shewon the $125,000 MissVersatility Final at Delaware.

On a day when records were falling left and right she wonin 1:51.4 to establish a new world record. It was just her second win in her last five starts. D’Orsaybroke and finished last. She had gone off stride in her onlyother career try on a half-mile track as well. “I think so,” Czernyson said when asked if Maven wasback on top of the division. “But I didn’t think her last fewraces were that bad. But maybe she wasn’t at the top of hergame. I would say she’s No. 1. She’s always been a littlebetter of the two but Dorsay is a tough filly. She just has herlittle quirks In what was somewhat of a surprise, Maven led everystep of the way for driver Yannick Gingras. “I didn’t think she wold be able to do it way the way shedid it today,” Czernyson said. “But I knew Yannick had it inhis mind to try to go for something today.” Maven won by 7 1/4 lengths. Bax Of Life was second andDaylon Miracle was third. Czernsyon said both mares will head to the Red Mile andcompete there on Kentucky Futurity Day.

Vibe Blue Chip, High Bridge win Old Oaken

Bucket Divisions

By John Pawlak, the U.S. Trotting Association Delaware, Ohio --- Joseph Di Scala, Jr. and CynthiaLynn Massari's Vibe Blue Chip (Yannick Gingras) poppedout of the three hole going to the three-quarters andcaptured the $65,750 first division of the Old Oaken Bucketfor 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings on Thursday (Sept.19) at the Delaware County Fair. From the first call to the top of the stretch they all chasedBluto (Andy Miller), who couldn’t withstand the charge ofVibe Blue Chip. Bluto held second and Sailer Eddie (RonPierce) earned third money. Vibe Blue Chip (Andover Hall-Winning Jonlin, by MusclesYankee) won in 1:54.3, a national season’s record for asophomore trotting gelding on a half-mile track. He has nowwon five of 14 and $128,787 this year under the direction oftrainer Ron Burke. "I only put trotting hobbles on him to give himconfidence," said Burke. "He gets a little shaky, but it's nota gait issue. He's cleanly gaited. "Actually I saw he had a little trouble on the turn butYannick did a great job holding him together around theturn, then pulling out the plugs coming into the stretch. Iknew if he could do that he would trot right by them. "We are taking him to Lexington and after that it will beday-to-day with him."

The favored Spider Blue Chip (Ron Pierce) made two

breaks, which helped High Bridge (Yannick Gingras) winthe $65,750 second division of the Old Oaken Bucket.

The mile was coveredin 1:55.1, equaling the

national season’s recordfor a 3-year-old trotting

colt on a half-mile track.Boffin (Charlie Norris)

and Theatrical Session(David Miller) were next

to the wire, finishingsecond and third,

respectively. High Bridge (Cantab Hall-Madame Volo, by Yankee

Glide) is owned by Christina Takter, John Fielding, JoyceMcClelland and Jim Fielding and is trained by Jimmy

Takter. He has won five of 18 this year, with $249,348 in the

bank. He finished seventh, beaten only four lengths, in thisyear’s Hambletonian.

"He might not be right up with the top horses but he isvery consistent and a good horse to have in the barn," said

Jimmy Takter. "If he could have gotten out in the Hambo, as he got

blocked in behind some horses, he could have finishedsecond.

"There are still a lot of races left this year and he is a verysound horse. I've never had a problem with him. Look how

well he raced just six days ago (a strong second in the$260,000 Pennsylvania Sire Stakes final).

"We have the Breeders Crown at Pocono (in October) andhe really likes it there."

Dragon Again to Ohio, Sugar Valley Farm

Ohio has picked up another big stallion. Dragon Again will stand at stud in the Buckeye State in

2014 at Sugar Valley Farm. Now 18, he is currently thefourth leading pacing stallion in North America based on all-

age earnings and is the sire of Foiled Again, the richestpacer of all time.

“It's a coup for the state, not just our farm,” said SugarValley’s Joe McLead. “It’s just great to have a super sire of

his stature coming in. He’s the second leading money-winning sire of all time and for us to be able to have him

come in is an honor. The state of Ohio is rebounding and tohave a horse like this come in means a lot.

“I think he’ll do really well. Whether or not he’ll be the toppacing stallion in the state, I can't really say that because

we have other stallions and there are a lot of good pacingstallions in the state. All the farms, we root for each other.”

McLead doesn’t anticipate Dragon Again’s age being afactor.

“He has been a super horse his whole life and he bred

over 120 mares at Hanover this year at 18,” he said. “I

don’t foresee any problems. I have spoken with the peopleat Hanover and they are quite confident this will be a

smooth transition.” McLead said the 2014 stud fee for Dragon Again has yet

to be established. At Hanover, his fee in 2013 was $6,000. “It might be a little less than that next year,” McLead said.

Philly Paper Roasts Slots-Racing Connection

The top story yesterday on Philly.com, the website of the

Philadelphia Inquirer was all about horse racing, and itwasn’t pretty. The paper chose to focus in on the rich

purses being offered Saturday at Parx Racing, where thecard will include the $1 million Cotillion and the $1 million

Pennsylvania Derby. It called the purse money part of a “massive corporate

welfare program that props up the state’s horse-raceindustry, and often benefits rich horse owners.”

The story goes on to say: “There’s no question themassive subsidy has helped to stall the collapse of

Pennsylvania’s race-horse industry. But it has done little tofuel more public interest in the sport.”

Harness racing is also mentioned in the hatchet job. To read the full story click here

By Brett SturmanRace 8, F&M N/W $5,000 L5 PaceOCEANVIEW BINDI continues to underachieve this yearwith what now stands at a 2 for 25 seasonal record, but thatwas a much improved recent try on her drop to the bottomand she's good enough to beat these from the rail. Jamieson will aid the cause but trainer Plyley is sporting justa 4 for 69 rate; I'd like a price. ON THE CUSP folded lastout rather inexplicably; becoming an increasingly tough call at the short price. STAGE IT RIGHT makes her fourthstart back from the layoff and her try from two back wouldlikely give her a big chance where she blitzed a sub :27third quarter before packing it in late. LANESIDE LEXUSmakes her second start back for Johnson but has seenbetter days; difficult to make a solid case for anyone else. Race 9, OSS 2YO Colt TrotVALORSCROSS has raced well here previously for trainerand driver Eddie Green and might not be all that outclassedshould be mind his manners. Already an ONSS divisionalwinner, he was quite good here back in early August andshould be moving forward late. Any live flow will help, double digit price coming. HOPE FOR JUSTICE seems tobe going in the wrong direction but was still Jody's choice; looked like a sensational one in the very beginningof the 2-year-old season. GREAT WHITE WAY gainedsome confidence last out with a 1:57:3 score against lesserwhere he had it his own way; steps up for Norman. MASSACAIA was used early last out in his Wellwoodelimination and tired against better; more than capable ofbouncing back on the drop. UTOPIA comes from a lowpercentage barn but looks to have some talent. Race 10, OSS Gold 2YO Colt PaceBOOMBOOM BALLYKEEL somehow managed to survive alengthy inquiry to take the Metro final after Sylvain got himoff from the rail to slingshot by in the stretch to win in1:50:4. He had been hinting at a big try leading up to that race and it's hard to not think he won't be heard from in thisspot. ARTHUR BLUE CHIP has gotten the better of the topchoice on more than one occasion but could only close lastout in :30 at Grand River and that was following the scratch. Needs to prove it all over again. THREE OFCLUBS jogged last out but

the Battle Of Waterloo champ couldn't get close whenfacing these types two back; morning line choice mightfloat up a bit on the odds board. TWIN B SPY hasn't hadthe easiest go of it in a number of his recent tries; couldvery well surprise from the rail for top connections. Race 11, F&M N/W 3 or $40K LT PaceOK FEISTY looks entirely uninspiring on paper, but this isa big drop and the barn change from Menary to Auciello isworth taking note of. I think she'll make a good showing forherself as a longshot hunch play. ANGELS DELIGHTfolded last out off a slow half but at least it's back toWaples now; seemed to be in good form prior to last week. FOX VALLEY BONITA had her four race win streak snapped last out but overall she seems consisently fastenough to be able to make amends against these. SOMEWHEREINHEAVEN continues to get slammed atthe post draw for a low percentage trainer; could light upthe board if there is some mayhem up front. BURNINGBEACHES makes her second start back from the month layoff and picks up a new driver.
