Dawn Stover with SFA Gardens and Kim Conrow, President of Native Plant Society of Texas, are collaborating on the projects. Funding from Buddy Davidson Family Foundation will purchase native plants, publication of a technical booklet, educational fact sheets and signage. The gardens will help Nacogdoches fulfill the NWF’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge, a promise to “create habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators, and to educate citizens about how they can make a difference at home and in their community.” The deadline to submit bids for construction of the Frances Shofner loop on Lanana Creek Trail passed this week with no submissions; staff will rebid in hopes of securing a contractor by January 2021. HISTORIC SITES/MAIN STREET – (Staff contact: Jessica Sowell, Historic Sites & Main StreetManager, 936-560-4441)The Merry Christmas Market shopping event is this Friday, November 20th from 10 am to 8 pm andSaturday, November 21st from 10 am to 5 pm. Everyone is invited to shop Downtown this holidayseason and during this event! We will have food trucks, holiday deals, prize drawings, a beautifullydecorated Downtown and more!

LIBRARY – (Staff contact: Mercedes Franks, Library Manager, 936-559-2945)Since many people are staying home for the holidays instead of traveling to see family, the library isfacilitating video chats for Nacogdoches residents to visit virtually. Zoom for the Holidays will takeplace Monday and Tuesday during the week of Thanksgiving. The target audience is anyone whomight have heard of Zoom or Facetime, but either does not know how to use it or does not have adevice. A customer can request a time slot and library staff will help connect them with their lovedones.

The Recreation Center and Public Library building received a facelift this week thanks to CARESAct funding. Wright Renovations & Remodeling installed automatic sliding doors which will helpreduce the number of surfaces that customers must touch, therefore reducing the spread of COVID-19. Restroom fixtures will be automated as well during a separate project.

Library staff conducts a weekly study group for people preparing for their citizenship exam. Duringthe sessions participants review civics questions, work on vocabulary and pronunciation, and practiceinterviewing. This week one of our participants went to Houston for her exam and reported that shepassed! She thanked us for helping her prepare and will take her citizenship oath soon.

POLICE - (Staff contact: Jim Sevey, Police Chief, 936-559-2601)Vince Griffin will be retiring November 30. Vince’s Retirement party will be November 24 at theExpo Center from 3-5 p.m.

Promotions:Lieutenant Dan Taravella has been selected to be promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief inCharge of the Patrol Division. Assistant Chief Taravella will report to Chief Sevey for hisassignment effective December 1, 2020.Sergeant Nick Stewart has been selected to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. LieutenantStewart will report to Assistant Chief Taravella for his assignment effective December 1,2020.Officer Joey Pitts has been selected to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Pittswill report to Assistant Chief Taravella for his assignment effective December 1, 2020.

ENGINEERING - (Staff contact: Steve Bartlett, Public Works Director, 936-559-2522)The City has received a Water Quality Award from the Centers for Disease Control and Preventionfor the consistent quality of fluoridation in our water system. Proper dosing of fluoride is reported tobe a safe and effective method to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health. The City typicallydispenses approximately 20,500 pounds per year of concentrated Fluorosilicic acid into our surfaceand ground water distribution systems.
