Chicago In January, the Chicago Chapter held its 2008 kick-off event hosted by
certified reality therapist Cathie Looney for an evening of networking and
conversation. Cathie gave the group insight and wit on how four very different
generations can successfully maintain a balanced work relationship and how to
overcome the differences in age and personality. Cathie’s clever presentation left the
guests inspired and intrigued.
Dallas This past November the Dallas chapter hosted its inaugural Black Tie BBQ.
Roughly 260 people attended the event raising almost $10,000 for the scholarship
fund. The chapter also awarded nine scholarships at the event, which featured

did community service, helping out with the Christmas in the Park event, hosted a
networking lunch in January, and gathered to watch a chick flick at the Global
Theater in Downsview in February. This month the chapter will be hosting its
scholarship awards dinner and in April, the chapter is having a dinner and salsa
dancing lesson night at Lula Lounge.

WHETHER DESIGNING FOR A GUESTROOM, lobby, or corridor,
choosing carpet that meets all specifications takes
time and careful consideration. With emerging trends
including environmentally conscious design and
technology-based custom programs, designers are faced
with many options. Confused about where to start?
Here are some tips that will put you right on track to
leave guests floored.
Defining the Job Some of the biggest mistakes
designers make when selecting carpet for a space occur
at the very beginning of the specification process
because specifications are not well-defined.
“Determine the budget for your carpets as soon as
possible,” explains Wes Gunter, contract marketing
manager of Masland Contract. If there is a preferred
manufacturer, nylon branding requirement or
preference, or a minimum weight requirement, make it
clear from the start. “Once the project has been defined
and a broad spectrum of specifications has been
established, it is time to evaluate the constructions and
textures that can be manufactured,” explains Bob
Kokoszka, president of Burtco Enterprises, Inc.
Designers should also focus on what features they
want for the carpet. What kind of backing is needed?
What about the fiber weight? Other carpet qualities to
think over include performance warranty, anti-static
performance, colorfastness specification, soil-retardant
and stain-release finishes, tuft-bind specification, and
delamination specification. “Choosing the right carpet >

HOSPITALITY IS FINALLY CATCHING ON, and more hotel projects are
slowly coming on line that are seeking Leadership in
Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) certification from
the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). But is it
as difficult and cumbersome as people say it is? NEWH asked
a few interior designers who are currently navigating the
process.
“One of the biggest challenges is just identifying product
that can be used toward LEED credit of recycled content or
locally sourced materials,” says Mike Suomi, vice president of
design for New York City-based Stonehill & Taylor Architects,
PC. “We can’t make heads or tails of it. So we’re actually
having second meetings with every single vendor that has
binders in our library. We’re having straightforward LEED
meetings with them, so they can help us understand, yes your
product will help us meet LEED criteria or no it won’t.”
Billie Thorne, principal of CMMI, agrees: “It has been a big
learning process. I’ve been reading as much as I can, attending
seminars, but I learn the most from talking to the vendors.”
Suomi and his team are currently working on three LEED
certified hotels, for three different owners, in Manhattan: a yet-
to-be-named luxury property; one for Hampshire Hotels &
Resorts (owners of Dream and Night); and one in Chelsea for
GFI Capital Resources, which hopes to claim the title as New
York City’s first carbon neutral hotel. And each has presented
unique challenges, as he’s working with new and old versions
of LEED criteria. “With [one of the properties] one of our
biggest challenges is with new LEED, which calls for 1.1 watts
per square foot of lighting for the guestrooms, which is not
achievable in any realistic way using traditional incandescent
lighting,” says Suomi. “So we’re doing seven model rooms,
each will have a different lighting system, using combinations
of incandescent, halogen, and fluorescent, with a lot of LED, so
we can hit our energy requirement for LEED and also get a feel
for what the lighting will look like.”
ForrestPerkins senior vice president Cliff Tuttle’s advice to
make the process run smoothly? Make the decision to apply
for LEED certification as early as possible. “It’s really critical
that you have a full team on-board early on and that there’s a
buy-in from everyone at the table. The team has to
continually meet throughout the process to make sure every-
one is on the same track,” he says, adding that he’s currently
working with Portland-based SERA Architects on the Nines, a
Starwood Luxury property in Seattle seeking LEED
certification. “We have some projects where it was not a con-
sideration at the start, and now they’re coming back, wanting
to do the application [for certification] and it’s going to be a lot
more difficult. There was no clear understanding of who was
responsible for what credits. So it’s kind of all over the map.”
Suomi suggests working with a LEED consultant. (Viridian
Energy & Environmental, LLC is working on all three projects
with his team.) “LEED is not consistently credited, nor is it
even legal, district by district, area by area,” he says. “Working
with a company like Veridian has made it very easy for us, but
trying to do this on our own would be like navigating blind
through a maze.”
An expensive and timely one at that. “For some owners it
isn’t about meeting the requirements, it’s about the additional
costs for certification—the paperwork, consultants, and time
to make sure all the systems run clean,” Thorne says.

Anderson designed for her
hospitality studio at
Georgia Southern
University.
IT WAS JUST A REGULAR DAY FOR ASHLEY
ANDERSON. She was sitting on her front porch, sketch-
ing, when the phone rang: she had won an Icon of
Industry scholarship. “I was so shocked, I couldn’t
believe it,” she recalls.
A senior at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro,
Anderson will graduate in May with a B.S. in Interior
Design. When her hospitality design studio professor
forwarded her information about the Icon scholarship,
Anderson decided to apply, working diligently on writing
her paper, and getting her portfolio in order.
So far, Anderson thinks the NEWH-sponsored trip to
New York City has been the most eye-opening aspect of
the scholarship. “The trip to New York was amazing. I’d
never been there before,” says the Georgia native. “It was
a well-rounded experience,” she continues, pointing out
that she grew professionally, exercising her time manage-
ment and writing skills. “This [the scholarship] will open
doors because of the recognition. Because of NEWH, I’ll at
least get a conversation with potential employers when I
graduate.”
But, it’s Anderson’s practical experience that should
also make those potential employers a captive audience.
Last summer, she interned in Marietta, Georgia, at Design
Directions Incorporated, following her desire to work in
the hospitality sphere. There, she maintained the
resource library and spec books, and also had the chance
to select finishings and furnishings. “It gave me a great
idea of what to expect from the industry,” Anderson says.
Her other key design experience comes from working
at Crossfields, Inc., a small commercial firm in Kennesaw,
Georgia, where the vice president became her mentor. “It
was great because I went to client meetings and started
drawings. It prepared me and gave me a good taste of the
interior design life,” she explains.
In the midst of sending out resumes, the ambitious
Anderson has been scoping out various design firms
across the country (she’s particularly drawn to Seattle and
Colorado), paying careful attention to their mission state-
ments and commitments to sustainability. “It’s something
fun and imaginative,” she says of working in hospitality
design. “I love the idea of working in hotels and making
something hospitable for people.”
Looking way ahead, she’s already contemplating open-
ing a B&B of her own post-retirement, something that
traces back to her days of helping set up the guest bed-
room to perfection as a kid. But for now, Anderson’s five-
year plan is no less daunting. “I want to become a more
developed designer,” she says. “I want to make my mark
on the hospitality world. I want to be a major player.”

Places—was built. As a result, the rooms were small and
most had sloped ceilings and inset dormer windows. One
group of rooms even shared a shower and bathing area.
Electrical wiring was from the 1920s, exposed HVAC
units had been added in the ’70s and most were scribed
into the wall under the window, and the designers had to
consider the location of the existing vents and shafts to
minimize the costly relocation of walls and bathrooms.
“It did not take long for us to understand why these rooms
had kept the original plumbing and electrical for 90
years,” says Andrea Sheehan, principal, Dawson Design
Associates. “They were just too expensive to modify.”
THE SOLUTION: Sheehan and her team (along with
LaSalle Hotel Properties and Rossi Architecture)
redesigned the tower to create 66 guestrooms, 12 unique
two-room mansion suites, and six executive suites. An
old-fashioned radiator cabinet now fits around the HVAC
units so they “look the era and conceal damage done to
the dormer wall by poor installation,” Sheehan says. The
team also designed a wardrobe/armoire that fits in the
shallow 20-by-12-inch closet area. Some (there were five
variations; trimmed to look like built-ins) project out 18
inches beyond the wall to make room for drawers and an
ironing board. A new 10-inch high base with an electrical
chase behind it allows the power and cable wires to run
around the room without tearing into the plaster walls. “It
saved hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Sheehan says.
Cherry bathroom doors with etched beveled glass win-
dows make the tiny bathrooms more airy. A butler’s rack
straddles the toilet to hide “ugly” valves, a custom wood
vanity surrounds the small sink, the 24-inch tub is now a
walk-in shower with a glass partition, and Sheehan
employed pillowed marble tiles, glass mosaics, and black
marble floors to create “tiny little jewel boxes,” she says.
Some of the 200-square-foot rooms, which were often
adjacent to each other, became nine of the Mansion Suites
(accomplished by tearing out one of the bathrooms to
become a hallway). But that wasn’t the biggest challenge
for these rooms: each one had completely different pack-
ages—equaling more than 1,000 FF&E specs alone—to
evoke the feeling of individual mansions. All together,
Sheehan estimates that they spent roughly 2,000 hours on
just the selections and the purchasing specifications for
the guestrooms and suites combined. “When the CEO
and I were brainstorming how to treat the suites, it sound-
ed like a terrific idea at the time,” Sheehan says, adding
that Bray Whaler did an excellent job handling the com-
plicated purchasing. “It was only after my sanity came
back that I realized how intense they were going to be.
Let’s just say they became a labor of love. I spent a lot of
long weekends and nights pulling tassels and pom-poms.”

would feel right at home again at the Radisson
Lexington Hotel thanks to the recent part-Hollywood,

architecture firm Stonehill & Taylor. Bold colors and
sensual materials mingle throughout the property,
bringing the hotel back to its 1920s heyday. “The design
aesthetic was the glamour, natural spontaneity, and sex
appeal of Marilyn Monroe,” says Mike Suomi, vice
president of design for Stonehill & Taylor, and the
Greater New York’s programming co-chair. “We want
the design to make people flirtatious.”
At first, the project started out solely as a guestroom
and suite renovation. But once Stonehill & Taylor were
commissioned for the job, the project became a
complete redesign of not only the guestroom and suites,
but also the lobby, bar, fitness center, and all public
spaces—a more than two-year endeavor. “Contributing
on all phases of the project has been a great advantage
in terms of design,” says Laura Plasberg, a new Greater

Masland Contract continues to develop flooring products and services that offer both the desired aesthetic qualities andthe necessary performance characteristics for hospitality spaces. The company’s selections are suitable for the most discriminating hotel and resort projects. Masland’s carpets have been developed to exceed the aesthetic and comfortexpectations of the property and its guests. All Masland Contract products are engineered to withstand the rigors ofheavy foot traffic and repeated cleaning, resulting in retention of their original appearance and minimizing the need forpremature replacement.
The company gives designers many solutions when specifying carpet for a hospitality environment including custom programs: Masland Custom Area Carpets and Rugs, Masland Custom Broadloom, and Hospitality Portfolio. From the AreaCarpets and Rugs program, designers can choose from wall-to-wall carpet, inset area carpets and rugs, and loose laidrugs options or broadloom options from the Custom Broadloom collection. The Hospitality Portfolio is a great tool fordesigners where a broad range of patterns, colors, and boarders are offered and can be produced in one or more of thecompany’s three textural technologies.
“We enjoy being a part of NEWH because it lets us connect on a deeper level with our friends and customers in the hospitality industry,” says Paul Breland, vice president of hospitality for Masland Contract. “Our representatives acrossthe country participate on a local level because they enjoy the relationships they’ve formed with hospitality designers intheir markets.” Breland also adds that Masland Contract is excited to increase the company’s participation through a corporate sponsorship. “We look forward to being a part of the growth and emerging trends that the hospitality industryis now experiencing, and we hope to be a good partner for both NEWH as well as the individual members.”
Signature Hospitality Carpets is a vertically integrated mill. The company has the expertise, experience, and equipmentneeded to create products that meet the diverse needs of the hospitality industry. Signature offers custom designs aswell as numerous running line carpets for immediate shipments from stocking programs. Signature Hospitality Carpets’ Design Studio offers the designers better tools, color accuracy, and realistic textures withInteractive Design Studio and SIMS technology that results in a smaller environmental footprint. The new InteractiveDesign Studio at www.signaturecarpets.com hosts an interactive studio that allows designers to select one ofSignature’s many custom patterns, select a color, and view it in a flat image or in one of the four room scenes, giving thedesigner the opportunity to narrow their selection down before ordering a Sim Strike then a physical sample.
The company is also very serious about the environment. “SigNature: it’s part of everything we do,” says Bob Thomas ofSignature Hospitality Carpets. “Nature is more than just a part of our name.” By offering designers the choice of recycled content yarns and replacing tufted swatches with detailed, color accurate virtual samples, Signature and thedesigner are able to eliminate thousands of pounds of landfill waste each year.
