IntroductionSwarthmore Education opened its doors to students on the 25th September 1909. It means that this year will mark our 110th year of encouraging inclusive, friendly, supportive lifelong learning for all. What a fantastic achievement! To celebrate this very special occasion we have a number of events lined up throughout the year including a series of debates, a music evening, an evening of poetry and the monthly Swarthmore Book Club.Friendly, welcoming and inclusive; the three words our students, staff and stakeholders say sum up Swarthmore. Whether you’ve enrolled on courses in the past or if it’s your first time here; our welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff are ready to help you with your enquiries and support you with your learning.

So far thanks to generous donations we have raised over £20,000 to support the restoration of our much loved building. Donations are still being accepted and can be given online via our website or in person at reception.

We receive funding from Leeds City Council and Leeds City College to deliver some of our courses. These are heavily subsidised and mean that you are able to access courses for a very small fee. In addition, we have our own Swarthmore courses that do not receive any funding. All courses are clearly labelled so you are clear on the fees payable. The majority of course fees are increasing this year to ensure we are covering our costs and contributing to the running of the centre and the repair and maintenance of our grade 2 listed building. We still remain very competitive on price compared to other local providers and I am confident that the price you pay still represents good value for money.

The membership fee remains the same at £12 per year which not only gives you access to our courses but allows you to attend and vote at the AGM and stand for election as a Trustee. All members will receive an invitation to our Christmas Party and be entered into a prize draw which will be drawn at the AGM.

For 2019/20 there are many additions to the programme as well as all the firm favourites. Browse through the pages, we are sure that you will find something for you.

Once again we look forward to welcoming you in the new academic year and hope you enjoy your time at Swarthmore Education Centre.

GENERAL INFORMATIONMembership FeesSwarthmore is a not-for-profit Registered Charity. All students pay an annual membership fee of £12 on courses of 6 hours or more. Being a member of Swarthmore not only gives you access to our courses but allows you to attend and vote at the AGM on the 26th of February 2020 and stand for election as a Trustee. Gift AidWe can claim Gift Aid on your membership fee if you are a tax payer. You will be asked if you are happy for us to claim back Gift Aid from your membership fee when you join – please tick the box on the enrolment form.

Refund Policy If you wish to cancel your place on a course, refunds can be made as follows: (membership fees are non - refundable)

• Cancel prior to the start of the course –minimum of 7 days’ notice – full refund of course fees.

• Cancel less than 7 days' notice AND within 2 working days after the first session of the course – refund of courses fees, less cost of one session.

• Cancel later than 3 days after the course start date – no refund.

One Day and Weekend Workshops• Minimum of 7 days’ notice – full refund.

• Less than 7 days' notice – no refund.

NB: Refunds to be collected within the term of the cancellation.

Access Swarthmore is located in a building created by combining several Georgian houses. The floors are uneven and there are steps and stairs.

We have a lift providing access from the ground floor to the basement and there is also a platform lift in the Art Studio – but there is no lift to the first floor or second floors of the building.

Please visit us before enrolling to ensure that you are happy with access to your course.We aim to make courses as accessible as possible and will relocate them to a downstairs room if we can.

GENERAL INFORMATIONCafé Swarthmore’s Café is open to members of the public as well as students and is a popular meeting place.

The café serves sweet and savoury snacks, hot meals and hot and cold drinks throughout the day and evening. There is a selection of home made cakes and pastries.

THE ARTSSwarthmore offers a wide range of arts courses that enable people to explore their creative side, learn new skills and improve their health and well-being. Many of the courses are held in our fully equipped customised workshops. We have courses suitable for all abilities, beginners, experienced and people with learning difficulties. An appointment with our Student Advisor can be made by anybody to help ensure the course meets your expectations. Although these courses are not accredited you will be supported by your tutor to record your learning and progress. Please note that there are additional material costs on some courses.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Swarthmore offers a variety of courses to promote health and well-being. Courses in Yoga, Pilates and Alexander technique will teach techniques and exercises that will strengthen muscles, improve posture and increase a feeling of well-being. Courses such as Mindfulness, Confidence Building and Mind Over Matter give people an opportunity to explore techniques that build confidence and self-esteem to improve their mental health and wellbeing.

An appointment with our Student Advisor is required for courses funded through Leeds City Council. An appointment can be made by anybody to help ensure the course meets your expectations. To book an appointment please contact 0113 243 2210 .

CounsellingCounselling courses offered at Swarthmore give people a great opportunity to learn new skills and techniques that will support them in work and life.

To achieve the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling qualification you must meet both internal and external standards of proficiency. Assessment methods include a portfolio and exam. Higher accredited opportunities are available at other local educational organisations. You will need to make an appointment with our Student Advisor and complete an application form before enrolling on the course. Prior completion of an Introduction to Counselling course is recommended.

Swarthmore offers accredited and non-accredited courses. You will study in a friendly and supportive environment where you will not only learn ICT skills but also build confidence and meet new people. Courses cover the basics and include searching the web and emailing. In addition there are also courses that cover areas such as Web Design, Photoshop Elements and Publisher.

Our accredited courses are from Entry Level up to Level 1 ITQ (OCR) and Level 2 ITQ (Gateway). Any new students enrolling onto our computer courses will need to meet with our Student Advisor, to book an appointment please call 0113 243 2210 or visit our reception.

We offer registered childcare in a lively, safe and stimulating environment for children from six months to five years old. We are open during the day for three terms of the year. The crèche is registered on the Childcare Register and maintained its compliant status in the latest inspection in December 2017.

HOW TO GET TO SWARTHMORESwarthmore is located in Leeds city centre near Leeds General Infirmary and Leeds City College (Park Lane Campus). There is a Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists approaching Woodhouse Square from Great George Street.

Bus No 5 First Leeds – stops at Woodhouse Square. Local stops for the Centre are Town Hall, Clarendon Road, Belle Vue Road, Leeds City College, Burley Road.

TrainLeeds City Station is a 15 minute walk.

CAR PARKINGWe regret that there are no parking facilities for students at Swarthmore. Information and an interactive map of the nearest parking are available on our website.

Free parking at Joseph’s Well car park is available after 5.30pm and at weekends.
