Northern Kentucky Gold Wing Riders
A
Friends! Friends! Friends! The GWRRA traveling plaque and visitation programs are set up to give us ride
opportunities and the chance to make many more friends with our same interests. We
are blessed to make new friends at conventions and through our travels, and we are
really lucky to have such great people in Kentucky to visit. Over the years we have
made many friends and a few arch nemeses too! This month we salute those friends
and thank them for being such great sports despite our competitive nature and
nemeses-ness. It’s all in good fun! ( Disclaimer: I didn’t have pictures of all y’all)

With the Ride-In still a few months down the road our plans are all still in play.
Our host campground is Big Bone Lick state park and the staff at the park has
agreed to give us a tour of the site. Have you ever wondered what is so special
about Big Bone Lick? Why does it have such a funny name? This program will
answer all those questions and more. Make plans to come out and enjoy the
fun!

Leah and I hope you are all well and taking care of yourselves during the Coronavirus Pandemic. The last
thing we wanted to do was to cancel the dinner ride and Tech-Day last month, but we felt that was in the
best interest of our chapter as a whole. We are continuing to monitor guidance given from the GWRRA
Home Office as well as from our district, both of which have recommended that we cancel or postpone all
chapter activities until further notice. Please continue to watch your email, our Facebook page, and our
web site to stay informed with chapter rides, events, and activities. As of this writing we are still going
forward with our plans for the Benham Schoolhouse weekend. We will take our lead from the Benham
staff to determine whether they will be open for business, as well as making sure there are restaurants
and other activities to do in the area. We will let you know as soon as we can should anything change.
April is the official start of the riding season. Our chapter riding season kicks off on April 1st with our first
scheduled ice-cream ride. I hope Mother Nature is paying attention and keeps the skies and roadways
clear for us. Weather permitting; I am planning on riding whether or not we can partake in a tasty Dairy
Queen treat afterwards. We still have a couple of weeks for things to settle down and hopefully restore
some sense of normalcy.
Our March gathering was well attended despite the world events. We did have visitors from Chapter C,
who appeared to be a little more than happy to capture the traveling plaque. We had a lot of fun
celebrating our chapter anniversary and some lucky members went home with an extra surprise. As of
now chapter visitation, traveling plaque, and couple of the year mascot programs are all on hold until
further notice. We are hopeful that this hiatus will be short-lived and that you are all planning to join us
when things resume.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us, or any member of the staff, should you have questions or need
anything. Until next time, stay safe!
Stay safe!
Brad Pitt came from Springfield, but he's not the only star. Lucas Gabriel, Brent Huff,
and Kim Crosby are all natives. (They all went to Kickapoo.)

Hello Chapter G! We were excited about the possibility of getting out and riding just when COVID-19 hit.
We hope all of you are safe and healthy. At this time we are all worried about our families and we want to
talk about families. When we looked up the word family, we discovered that one definition of family was “a
group united in criminal activity;” and another was “a group of related things.” Now we’re not saying we
unite as criminals, but when I combine the two together you get “a group united in related activities.” Thus
you have Chapter G!
We are a family and families take care of each other. We want you to know that we are part of that family
and want to help our family in any way we can. There are many ways we can help each other and one is
just by being there as a listening ear, errand runner for those who need to stay indoors and a happy voice
at the end of a telephone line.
We hope and want everyone to take care of yourselves, get fresh air every day and make contact with
someone (besides your spouse) to keep your sanity. If ANYONE needs ANYTHING, please do not hesitate
to let someone know; we are one big family. Randy is still working, and I am at home able to assist you in
anything you need.
Stay safe and healthy! Hope to see you soon,
When I thought about writing an article about my view I knew it would be very short. I
see a silver helmet about 3 inches from my face. Tada I’m done!! But then I
remembered going to Our Best Restaurant, probably for a dinner ride. It was spring around the middle of
May and I was concerned about going, for it was our granddaughter’s birthday. But it turned out to be a
beautiful day and perfect for a ride. I remember as we went by fields full of freshly turned earth, smelling
like, well, freshly turned earth. You know that sweet earthy smell of a promise to be. As we traveled these
backroads of Kentucky other sights and smells drifted into my mind. Newly mown grass is one of the
biggest indicators of spring and that pungent odor always makes me think of spring. As bikers we do try to
avoid grass as best we can. We rode by a house that had every color of Iris there was. It was gorgeous and
so beautiful to look at. The trees are always greener in spring and they made a great contrast to the blue
skies we had that day. And as I recall there were lots of white fluffy clouds in that blue sky. There were
daffodils and wild lilies along the side of the road. And you could hear the bees and who knows what other
kind of insect buzzing around. Chuck says it’s just the radio buzzing my ear but I know better. Dogs were
barking and kids were out riding their bikes. Several houses had sheets hanging on a clothesline. Just a
glorious spring day to be on a Goldwing with wonderful friends. And that’s my view from the backseat.

gathering.
I want to thank Dean Hedger and Jack Redd for doing a great job selling tickets at our March gathering!! If
it wasn’t for them selling our tickets and our wonderful members/guests, we wouldn’t have the opportunity
to do the fun events that we do each year.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Greetings to all my sheltering in place Winger friends-
Strange and scary times we live in.....but it WILL come to an end.... and when it does, we are gonna be
riding fools! So, make sure you have everything in place; good flags on your bike, good shirts on your body.
And if, after inspection, you find you need something, just call/email/text me and I'll fix you up.
As is always the case, we (the Chapter) make no profit on the things we offer for sale. We sell at what it
costs us.
Sooner or later, we will all be riding, do NOT forget your hearing protection; it's a silent killer that'll sneak
up on you and once your hearing is gone, it's GONE.
The flowers are in bloom and the grass is growing and that can only mean one thing. Riding season has
officially begun. It also means, if you have not furnished your beginning odometer reading to me for the
mileage contests, it is time to do so now. If you gave me your ending odometer reading for 2019, I will use
that as your beginning reading for this year. Last year we had 50 riders participate in events but only 27
participated in the mileage contest. Everyone has an opportunity to be a winner. You may not be one of the
top three high mileage riders, but you could be the “Average Rider.” So send those readings to me at
[email protected]. Have a great spring!

The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by
reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The District Educator is
responsible for promoting and implementing this program. The REP consists of four levels. Over the next
few months, I would like to look at the different levels and ways to relate them to your riding. While this
might initially seem like the same thing about which every other Educator writes, I would appreciate your
attention and your patience while I try to change your mind.
The first level is Level I: Safety by Commitment. If I had to guess, I would think everyone says they want to
stay safe. I say it. But what is “safe”? The Merriam-Webster online dictionary suggests safe can be used
as a noun, “a place or receptacle to keep articles,” or an adjective, “free from harm or risk, secure from
threat of danger, obsolete, harmless, unlikely to produce controversy, not likely to take risks, successful at
getting to a base without being put out.” We ride motorcycles. Many of us say motorcycles are safe. I do.
We can place things in various places on our Gold Wings (and other bikes too) but I do not think of my bike
as “a safe.” So safe as a noun does not describe our activity. It must be the adjective definition.
When I first started riding, many people with whom I spoke said motorcycles are not safe. Based on the
Merriam-Webster definition above, they must be correct. But I disagree. Because by itself, a motorcycle
cannot do anything except fall over. Once this occurs, it is on the ground, at its lowest energy potential,
going nowhere on its own, and, except for potentially spilling fuel, has become safe, in that it is now
“secure from threat of danger”. And if the engine is cool, it would make a good anchor to which to tie up a
dog.
I think people really mean operating motorcycles is not safe. The definition “without risk or controversy” is
I believe from where their thinking originates. And this is where each of us has the chance to change their
minds. Obtaining and maintaining proper training I believe is the key to safe operation of a motorcycle. I
know right now it is basically impossible to find or participate in on-bike or classroom training. But there
are many different opportunities to increase your knowledge while we wait for the current pandemic to
end. One of the best sources of information that can help make you a better rider is your owner’s manual.
Take it out, sit on your bike, read through it, and get to know it again.
Relearn the things you forgot. Knowing the tools you have and how they
work is important to operate safely, especially in an emergency.

Hey Chapter G!
I’m praying this message finds all y’all healthy, wealthy, and wise. I’ve chosen to stay put in Florida for a
while longer. I’m unable to see/be with my family and friends any more there than here. Self-quarantine,
social distancing, etc.. but I am healthy, have shelter, food for a month and lots of sunshine and friends. I
miss y’all, and hope I’ll be home by the May gathering. Prayerfully, the biggest part of this crisis will be
over, and we can start getting our lives back on an even keel. Take care my dear friends; keep the faith,
pray for those worse off than ourselves, and for God’s sake, WASH YOUR HANDS!!!!

March has ended like no March we have experienced before. The coronavirus has changed our lives and
delayed our riding season. The calendar for April has a lot going and at this time everything is on hold
including chapter organized ice cream rides. Following GWRRA and state restrictions, all of our events and
activities have to be placed on hold. We will revise the website and Facebook with updates as soon as we get
them. We hope everyone stays safe and follows the directions of social distancing and home isolation.

Congratulations to our members who are celebrating their
April Chapter G anniversaries!
April is here and we’ve shared recent milestones … some of which were a plus,
Like our 33rd Chapter G Anniversary last month … so “Congratulations” to us!
Then April 1st we dodged tricks and pranks … played by our “so called friends”,
Or perhaps we weren’t “fooled”, but were the “foolers”, and had to make amends.
Then Sunday we rejoiced in Easter and all that it means … and will forevermore,
For our homes, family, friends, and food … are blessings we just can’t ignore.
And speaking of blessings, we want to thank those … who in April joined the “G”,
So, let’s start with our own Tom Dierig who joined the chapter … back in 2003.
Now Tom recently adopted a new family member and speaks of him with pride,
For he’s a three-year-old lab-mix and as for his name … well, it’s simply Clyde.
Now Tom and Clyde have become best friends … so they both have truly gained,
And before long … we believe Clyde will most likely have … Tom completely trained!
Then in 2007 Greg and Melanie Wallace came to us from down Williamstown way,
And we’re blessed that they did … as we always are … when good people come our way.
Then one year later … in ’08 … we met a family who brought tons of joy and smiles,
For that’s when Gary, Darlene, Raven, and Michele came … yes, folks, that’s the Heils.
Then in 2011 we met John Keiter and we’re happy he made that excellent decision,
For when wearing pins, patches, and shirts from him … we’re quite a “G” fashion vision!
But even though dressing well and looking spiffy has improved our “G” quality of life,
Much more important is the fact that he blessed the “G” with … Karen, his sweet wife!
Now John and Karen know it’s a big world out there … and want to see it together,
To enjoy the mountains, the plains, and oceans of blue … regardless of the weather.
And this year it’s no different … Mexico and Canada are likely next on their list,
For breathtaking sunrises, sunsets, and rainbows… all of which shouldn’t be missed!
Now “G” friends I hope you cherish and enjoy … time spent with those you hold dear,
For we’ve had enough stress these last few months … to last for the rest of the year!
But we’ve learned a great lesson despite the stress … as we strived to do our part,
Which is … without physically touching those we love, we can “hug” them in our heart!
