Please plan to attend both classes in order to get the full benefit of the material. Materials fee: $3 per person payable at first classOptional text for the class is In Advance: A Practical Guide for Making Your Own End-of-Life Health Care Decisions, available in class for $10.

Marjorie PostThe Dragonfly StudioMarjorie Post was born and raised in the beautiful Willamette Valley. Her fortunate heritage was to have had two wonderful grandmothers from whom to learn needle crafts, especially quilting. Her daughters and she often wonder just what her grandmothers would think of all the modern methods we now use for creating quilts, as compared to the hand cutting and piecing, hand quilting and treadle machines commonly in use in their generation.

In years past, girls were routinely taught to sew using many of these same techniques. Marjorie was no exception; however, her desire to sew and create may have begun at an earlier age than many. Before she was old enough to start school, she sewed feed sack creations as long as her grandmother would rethread the needle. Then, when Marjorie was six years old, a new baby was due in the house and her mother suggested that she make a quilt for the baby. Diligently, she pieced small squares of cotton prints together. This was the beginning of a lifetime fascination with quilts.

Day/Dates: Saturdays, September 12, 19 & 26 Time: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. September 12 class will meet 10 a.m. to noon. Fee: Resident: $75, Non-Resident: $85

Jessica Fujii started taking Hula lessons at her elementary school when she was just eight years old. After two years she started helping her instructor with the younger kids. She would drum and lead her classes in chants as well. She continued to take lessons while helping teach kids for a few years. At one time she was doing hula almost every day of the week. In high school she joined a Halau, a school for learning hula. Her instructor did not believe in Hula competition. Instead they did exhibits at the Merrie Monarch (internationally known Hula competition), parades and hotels. In college, Jessica’s love for Hula and the Hawaiian culture also led her to being the chair of the luau at Willamette University.

Aside from Hula, Jessica enjoys backpacking once a year and spends much of her time exploring through day hikes when not on a long trip. She also enjoys all kinds of dance including country line dance, swing and jazz. Jessica’s students enjoy moving to the music in her hula class. Anyone who enjoys Hawaiian music will love her class. With hands and feet, hula tells stories and expresses all of the senses through movement. Come to her free demo, Saturday, September 26, 9:30-10 a.m.

Hula for Fitness Level 3. Don’t be shy! Just come and have fun! Learn all the basic hula steps with easy to follow instructions. Dance combinations will always tell a beautiful story through dance. You’ll be dancing before you know it, while burning calories and toning your hips, thighs and abdominals. Instructor: Jessica Fujii Location: Milwaukie Center Fee: $40* Time/Date: Sa, 10/3-12/5; 9:30-10:30 a.m. (no class 10/10 & 11/28)

Eula Decker, Cribbage Leader, started learning to play cribbage at 5 years old. She and her brother learned from their father who also learned at a young age. The advantage of this game is that it helps you to learn to add and subtract. The math is relatively easy and anyone can learn. Eula says, “If you can add, you can play.” The people in the group are very supportive and can help you along the way. Cribbage is good for exercising the brain in a casual atmosphere and is inviting to people of all abilities. Stop by, learn something new and perhaps make some friends along the way.

Cribbage, Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m. Beginners and experienced players welcome. No experience necessary. $1 per session.

“I like the combination of music and movement of hula which is beautiful and all very calming. I leave class with an inner peace.”

Marsha Wood, hula student

In August, 1945, I was a soldier in the US 25th Infantry Division on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. We had just moved down out of the mountains where the division had lost of 900 men in 165 days of combat. We were training for the invasion of Japan where it was predicted that many would die. The 25th and two other Army divisions were slated to spearhead the invasion.

You can imagine the relief we felt when we heard about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and that Japan had surrendered bringing World War II to an end. - Bruce Hamilton
