hobby!!

Enjoy this cooler weather – just right for

working on snuggly quilts. I’ll be looking for

you please have your backing sewn together as

to piece the backing. If you do not have batting,

MEETING & MEMBER NEWS

Holiday Party Karla Lynch

The Holiday Party was a fun evening for

85 guild members. Thanks to Karla Lynch for

planning the event and her cottage group, River

Quilters, for doing all the set up and decorating.

Members brought two batik fat quarters for the

drawing at the end of the evening.

The evening began with voting for the

favorite "Do Not Touch the Quilts" signs.

Delores Simpson and Rosalie Clark had the

quilts arranged and numbered for everyone to

see. Delores gave everyone a ticket to vote for

their favorite. The winners were First Place -

Elva Farrell for her Tombstone Quilt; Second

Place - Cathy Lane for her Bumper Sticker

Quilt; and a tie for Third Place - Beth Grindal

for her Trio of Owls Quilts and Randy Carman

for her Quilter in Jail. Winners received tickets

for the Gift Basket Boutique at the 2017 Quilt

Show.

Also before dinner, members were able

to buy raffle tickets for the Holiday Tin Raffle.

Tickets were 4/$1. There were 10 packages of

prizes that included calendars, quilt books, scis-

sors, rulers, rotary cutters and more! The raffle

raised $533 for All Faiths Food Bank.

Then came dinner. A delicious buffet by

Der Dutchman. There was more than enough

food and pie for everyone! There was even

some to take home.

Next came our 2016 Member of the

Year - Elva Farrell. She's a very deserving

member! As our Education Chair she did it all,

taking care of our teachers, going to the airport,

whatever was needed. She is also the Co-chair

of the 2017 Quilt Show and has had many com-

mittee chair jobs with our past quilt shows.

Elva received a Member of the Year name tag,

her dues paid for 2017 and a free class. Con-

gratulations!!

Karen Clark, our President, then installed

our new officers. Delores Simpson will be our

new President for the next two years and Cathy

Lane will be our new Secretary for the next two

years. Karen Clark will be Past President for the

next two years. The following will have their po-

sitions for one year Jann Warfield, 1st Vice Presi-

dent; Joy Abbott, Treasurer; and Ellen Simon,

2nd Vice President.

The end of the evening was the give away

of the Holiday Tin items by Karla Lynch and

Mary Nissen who are getting to be pros at this.

Ten people were very happy.

Then 6 members received the Grand

Prize, 25 fat quarters each!

What a great party!! Many thanks to all

who helped with the clean up.

Calling all New FKQG Members

We are off to quilt shows! Let’s carpool together

to some quilt shows in surrounding towns. On

shows. All new members (since September 2016)

are welcome to join us. Any “old timers” that

would like to join us are welcome to come

along. We’ll have lunch either at the quilt show,

or nearby. Then, return to Sarasota. Please join

us for the fun!!! To sign up, please call or

Every detail of binding and tiny

perfect piping will be covered.

Students work on their practice

piece to achieve making the

perfect piping, preparing the

quilt, applying piping, applying

ners, joining tails, and finishing

for a show-quality back.

Via live (and lively) pro-

jected demos, learn to add

eye-catching details to

quilts and increase accu-

Why fear the Y-seam? Learn

to miter borders on blocks and

quilts with this simple tech-

nique that makes impressive

miters with beautiful intersec-

tions! Use a kit to master mi-

tering and focus on perfec-

tion, then use your new skill

on any quilt!

Class covers everything

needed to get a nice binding

on your quilts! Topics in-

clude: preparing the

quilt, mitering corners to

perfection, joining tails (my

special technique), adding a

sleeve, and finishing the

back. We'll also discuss

curvy edges and other varia-

tions.

January 2017—Susan Cleveland

February 2017—Kathryn Schmidt With just a few simple unconventional techniques, you will be well on

your way to mastering non-traditional quilting. Building on the tech-

niques, you will learn how to put together the pieces into a finished de-

sign, all without a pattern, templates, or even pins! You will enjoy frus-

tration-free piecing, including easy, curvy sewing. The fun is in the proc-

ess, where there are no mistakes, just alternate design decisions.

Turn your brain around with a new approach to free motion quilting. Start with a great pat-

terned fabric and expand the design into our quilting space. Learn to control your machines as

well as draw with it. Some previous free motion quilting experience is desired, but not essen-

tial!

Starting a quilt from a blank sheet of paper can be very exciting. This class will show you how

to design a unique quilt that is totally your own. Using a process, you will learn how to con-

struct a small quilt that allows you total freedom to make your own design decisions. NOTE:

Your quilt will not look like this sample picture!

Precision Lines

Monday, March 20

9:00—4:00

The goal of improvisational

patchwork is flexible pattern-

ing. Start with a favorite

“traditional” block pattern and

gradually transform it through

a series of repetitions and

variations. Without rulers, tem-

plates or instructions to guide

you, you will gain a deeper

sense of how patterns evolve,

while learning ruler-free patch-

work and composition tech-

niques along the way.

Embrace the beauty, simplicity

and versatility of the line in your

quilts. This class will explore

linear quilt design and piecing.

Students will learn design princi-

ples related to using lines in quilts

as well as precision, measured

piecing for simple, stunning linear

quilts. Learn tips and tricks to

achieve perfectly straight lines

and flat intersections.

This class will help you use all

those scraps that are too big to

throw away, but you're not sure

how to use. Learn this unique

twist on improvisational piec-

ing and discover and learn to

use the concept of "inflow" to

manipulate the negative space

in your quilt. During the class

you'll make blocks of varying

sizes and learn the paneling

process to create a unique lay-

out for your quilt.

innovative ruler-free tech-

nique of bias-strip piecing on

nal bubbles as they arise, with options to apply the technique

in fixed block or improvisa-

tional compositions. This is an

advanced technique that takes

effort. Imagine the possibili-

Claying Around: Creating unique quilt em-bellishments (half day class) Sunday, May 14

This is one of the happiest

quilts you will ever see! It is

filled with bubbles and fizz and

the bright colors light up the

dark background. Paper piecing

makes it fast and accurate. You

can make it scrappy or choose a

set of colors to repeat in each

block. The border is a snap with

paper piecing and you can de-

cide to add prairie points, pip-

ing, beading and buttons or not.

Pat will introduce you to the

basic machine-quilting skills

that will shift your quilting into

high gear! Topics include using

stencils, graphic inspirations,

freehand techniques, stippled

designs, and more.

Learn simple effects with polymer clay to create but-

tons and beads. Polymer clays blend beautifully, so any

color can be achieved to match your fabrics exactly. A

quick trip to the oven sets the clay permanently. Non-

Education Notes Jann Warfield

The new year will start off with a bang in the Education Department. With the quilt show com-

ing up in March, we have quilts to finish! What a great time to take a class from Susan Cleveland in

making perfect miters for your borders and/or adding piping detailing to add a delightful interest to your

quilt. Then you will want to add the perfect binding! Susan can help you with all of these effects and

more. Raise your quilt and your future quilts to another level by learning the finishing techniques of an

award-winning quilter. There are seats available in the workshop classes and there is a lecture/demo

class for only $15. So price should not hold you back from getting some GREAT information to help

y o u m a k e e v e n b e t t e r , m o r e b e a u t i f u l q u i l t s .

We have some wonderful teachers coming this year and class descriptions and samples are avail-

able on the website and at the registration desk at the monthly meetings. Class registrations are also ac-

cepted by mail to Barbara Jefferies, 4573 Colleen Street, Port Charlotte 33952.

Instructors Sherry Lynn Wood, coming in April, and Pat Delaney, coming in May, are willing to

stay in a members home. If you are interested in hosting either of these teachers, please email Jann

at [email protected]. If you host a teacher, you get a free class this year, and have the opportunity to

really get to know a talented, well-known quilter. Don't let these opportunities pass you by. Take a class,

host a teacher, add new techniques to your tool belt and memories to last a lifetime.

If you’ve looked with secret longing to

the world of art quilts but don’t know

where to start, this is the class for

you. Lyric will gently guide you

through concrete exercises designed to

help you create ideas for original ab-

stract quilts. You will learn the basics

of fused collage as you assemble your

quilt top

Quilt Show News Pat Sefton and Elva Farrell

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost two years since the plans for Quilts In Paradise 2017 began. And, now we’ve only a couple months to complete all the preparations to

make this one of the best shows ever. And, to do that we need every member’s help.

First we need your quilt show entries- the deadline to mail registrations is Janu-

ary 15. Or, you may hand deliver your entries at the January 16, 2017 guild meeting. As

you can see by the thermometer we are only one fifth of the way to our goal of 200 entries.

Next, we need volunteers. Plan to sign up at the January meeting or contact the

chair in the area where you wish to volunteer:

Admissions-Carol Brown or Carroll [email protected] or

[email protected]

Block Auction-Tena - [email protected] Books and Magazines-Bev Wilberg - [email protected]

Boutique Baskets-Karla Lynch or Mary [email protected] or [email protected]

Consignment-Janine Ward - [email protected]

Door Prizes-Sue [email protected]

Hostess-MaryLee Charlet- [email protected]

Mini-Quilt Silent Auction-Cass Bowen –see the article below for times [email protected] Publicity-Pam [email protected] [Pam needs members to take packs of flyers to area quilt-

shops and shows-if you plan to visit any of these please let her know and deliver flyers for her].

Sheet ironing-Beth Grindal- [email protected]

Set-up-Barbara Jefferies- [email protected]

Take down-Elva Farrell or Pat [email protected] or [email protected]

We also need everyone to help promote the show. Dawn will have posters at the January meet-

ing. These need to be placed in stores, clubhouses, churches or anywhere you see a bulletin board. We

also have bookmarks that Pam Morris has asked us all to help distribute. Carry a few with you every-

where you go and give to all of your friends. She also still needs to have them delivered to area quilt

shops. Take some to deliver and let her know where you are dropping them off.

And, one more request-we still need someone to home host our appraiser Brenda Grampsas

for Friday night, March 3. She is coming from Brooksville and would rather not commute. If you could

host her for one night please contact Elva ([email protected] or see me at the guild meeting).

And, here’s the latest news from chairs:

DNTTQ Challenge-Delores Simpson-What wonderful quilts we had submitted for our first ever Do

Not Touch The Quilts project. Forty-five quilts were submitted and displayed at the December meeting.

The members voted and the winners are:

First Place: Elva Farrell-Tombstone

Second Place: Cathy Lane-Bumper Sticker

Third Place- tie: Beth Grindal-Trio of Owls

and: Randy Carman-Imprisoned Quilter

Page 8 January 2017 Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild, Inc.

Hostesses Mary Lee Charlet- I need many more volunteers. Please joins up for the fun of it. And, it

really is fun to interact with show visitors and talk with them about the quilts.

Block Auction-Tena Davis-As we put the finishing touches on our quilts for the show, we may find we

have extra fabric. Adding some pieces from our stash to it could be enough to make a set of blocks for

the Block Auction. Whatever your source, we are still in need of about a dozen more sets of blocks, and

would appreciate your help in achieving our goal. There is a need for volunteers for both Friday and Sat-

urday at the Block Auction booth.

Gift Basket Boutique- Karla Lynch and Mary Nissen-Well, it’s finally time! Start bringing your bas-

kets to the January and February meetings. If you only have the contents, that’s OK. I have about 30 baskets in my garage. I will be parking my car behind the fellowship hall where the library doors are if

you want to offload your items there or you can bring them into the hall and we can take them to the car.

I can’t wait to see what you’ve done. I’m always so impressed!! Thank you. Quilt Return – Helen Harrison-This is the return of the quilts to their owners after they are taken down at the end of the show. I need a minimum of 5 volunteers to help arrange alphabetically on ta-bles for their pick up (along with the judging sheets). It's a quick job - takes less than one hour.

Magazines and Books-Bev Wilberg-It's time to go through your magazines and see what you can do-

nate to our sale at the quilt show. Bring your donations of books and magazines on the set-up day,

Thursday. It would be very helpful if similar magazine are tied together in sets of five. We're also sell-

ing patterns this year. Patterns should be complete so we don't disappoint anyone, and if there's an arti-

cle in a magazine you want to keep, how about copying it and keeping the magazine intact? If you don't

make it to the Arena on Thursday, you can still bring your donations with you to the show. Please sign

up to help at our table, especially on Friday when everyone rushes in to get the best choices! Contact

me if you can help, Bev Wiberg, 341-9758 or [email protected]. Mini-Quilt Silent Auction- Cass Bowen and Marlene Kurtz-As of today we have received 64 small

quilts for the auction. I would like to have 100, if possible. We can realistically hang probably about 40+

each day. However, if we get smaller quilts, that number could increase. Please keep them coming. The

guidelines for the quilts are posted on the website under the Quilt Show heading. We are still looking for

a few volunteers to work this area during the show. We have openings in the following time slots: Fri-

day, March 3rd - 12-1 pm and 1-2 pm. Saturday, March 4th - openings are 9-10 am, 1-2 pm, and 2-3 pm.

We need one person for each of those slots. It’s an easy “sit-down” job. If interested, e-mail me at

[email protected]. You can also sign-up at the January meeting.

Door Prizes-Sue Balazs- I have received many nice, new and almost items for door prizes. We are still

looking for more quality items so this show will have a greater variety available. This might include no-

tions, fat quarters, fabric bundles, books, patterns, etc. I will have a labeled box at each meeting for do-

nated items.

Quilt & Sewing Machine Tickets-Dawna Basl-I still need members to pick up tickets! Remember, you

should plan to pay for tickets when you pick them up-you are not necessarily buying the tickets-you are

the retailer-you are paying for the tickets for resale to your family and friends. As soon as you pay

$20.00 for tickets you earn an armband for free admission to the show both days of the show (that’s a

Library Letters

Ellen Simon

Just a quick note this month to let you

know that the library will be CLOSED in Janu-

ary.

For those of you with checked out books

you will have another month to enjoy them.

Susan Cleveland, the January teacher, is

represented in the library by two books,

Piping Hot Curves and Precision Panache. I was

able to purchase them the last time Susan taught

in the area, at the Venice guild. I don't know if

there are openings in her classes, but I highly

recommend Susan as a very professional, experi-

enced and organized teacher. I don't think there

was a single question in class that she couldn't

answer.

See you all in February.

a $16 value). Tickets are a major portion of the show’s profits-the quilt design was donated, the

fabrics were donated and the appraisal was donated so expenses are minimal.

Quilt Show Set-Up-Barbara Jefferies-Volunteers are needed to help with the show set up! Yes, we

will be hiring men to assemble the racks BUT members are needed to take the hanging sheets from

the ironing stations to the racks as they are constructed, to pick up quilts and take them to the as-

signed hanging location so that they can be hung, and to pin the smaller quilts to the sheets. The

more help we have the more quickly the set up can be completed.

Breaking News: Due to the number of entries in the Collaborative Professional Categories

we have decided to add a second Best of Show Award. So, we will award a Best of Show

Individual and a Best of Show Collaborative Professional (the ribbon will read Best of

Show). Because of the number of entries that have been professionally quilted we felt it

was unfair to eliminate from consideration all the members who have made the quilts, and

it is also unfair to judge those who quilt their own quilts against the professional.

YoYo’s Katie Metheny

Please welcome all of our new mem-

bers at each meeting or FKQG function as they

given to each new member when they join

FKQG. They will be asked to wear these tem-

porary nametags until their official nametags

are delivered. Please make a point to introduce

yourself to anyone wearing one of these yoyo

“nametags”. Thanks so much!!!

tending the “NO FRILLS” Winter Retreat. We have scheduled four full days of re-

treat time. You’ll have from 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning until 4:00 p.m. Sunday

night to sew, eat, and quilt. You can finish those “UFO’s”, start new projects,

learn new techniques from your fellow retreaters or have fun watching others

be productive while you eat chocolate. What could be better, you say? Have

fun at the quilter’s fair, dress a pig or feed the chickens. Come join the fun.

Our venue for the retreat is Christian Retreat Conference Center which is on

the Manatee River. It’s a lush, wooded setting, quiet and serene. But inside our

workroom we don’t have to be quiet and serene. We can be lively and fun, and

we are. Get your girlfriends together for a great time. Dress is casual. All meals

are provided. Ask anyone who has been before - it’s the best time! A $50.00 de-

posit is required with registration.

If you have additional questions, contact Sue Baker at (941)224-7137 or Janice

Dentler at (941)720-5403.

Complete the registration form below and mail to Sue Baker, 4060 43rd Ave.

Dr., W, Apt. 9, Bradenton, FL 34205.

Monthly Guild Meeting Night

Another year of quilting and another year

of Chat and Chew. These dinners are so much fun

and we get to know other members and find out

what’s going on in everybody’s life that it would

be a shame not to continue. Nobody volunteered

to take over making reservations but I hate to see

this staple in our FKQG life dwindle, so I re-

volunteered.

I will still send out reminders to new

members, but the rest of our quilters should know

that before every meeting we will gather at Der

Dutchman, 5:00pm to order off the menu or take

the buffet – Dutch treat, of course. Make your

reservations with me, at the latest, the day before

our meeting and we’ll see you there.

I’ve moved – different phone number –

MEETING & MEMBER NEWS

Pet Bed Workshop

Jane Sanks

In December we completed 77 beds.

This brings our total to 811 for 2016.

I have scheduled our January meeting

for Friday the 20th .

Basically we stuff the beds at the work-

shop, sew the opening closed and then stuff the

lining into the outer fabric bed. We work fairly

hard, but only for 2 hours. Join us when you

have free time. It is a terrific group of people.

Remember when filling those bags with

fabric and batting scraps, we do not need any

fabric that is stiff. Also, we do not use uphol-

stery, denim or corduroy scraps. If you have

fabric pieces large enough to make into a bed

or a lining for the beds, that size we can use.

We meet on Fridays from 1 to 3 PM at

the American Red Cross facility on the north

end of Cantu Court.

You may call me for more information.
