Nettle-leaved bellflower - most beautiful 2014 sePaC stamP

The organization for small european postal adminis-trations SePAC organizes a vote for the most beautiful SePAC stamp every year. In 2014, the stamp featuring the nettle-leaved bell-flower, photographed by Andy horner, was entered into the vote for Åland. We are today very honoured that the Åland stamp won the vote. A Hunter’s best frIend

Hunting is a popular pastime in Åland and around 12 % of all Ålanders obtain a hunting

license every year. The 2015 stamp booklet features the hunter’s best friend, the hunting dog.

Seafowl hunting was featured in the postal label series on the theme wooden duck decoys, which came to an end in 2014. Issued on 3 september, the 2015 booklet features another type of hunting, presenting three dog breeds commonly used for hunting in Åland.

The Finnish Hound on the

stamp is called Tova and is owned by Marcus Påvals in Vårdö. The breeding of the Hound started in the late 1800s in finland, where it is still most commonly found. The Hound is used to hunt hare and fox. It is a versatile tracker, which pursues quarry with passionate and audible barking making it easy for the hunter to follow even in difficult weather conditions and terrains.

The Norwegian Elkhound grey is a hunting dog originally from norway. As the name implies it is used to hunt elk. The elkhound tracks and holds the elk at bay with loud barking until the hunter can sneak up and shoot it. The elkhound on the stamp is called Molle and lives with his master Håkan Holmberg in Jomala.

The Wire-haired Dachs-hund is a versatile hunting dog. It is, above all, used to hunt small game and roe deer. It is a persevering and energetic tracker with an excellent sense of smell. The dachshund is also often used for tracking wounded game. The stamp dog Kia lives with Hillevi Hagberg in Jomala.

From a statistical view-point, Åland is one of the regions in europe with most hunters. More than 3400 hunting licenses are issued every

year and even more Ålanders have had training. The most common game in Åland is roe deer, but many other species, such as elk, hare, deer, pine marten and fox may be hunted for most or parts of the year. some 4000 roe deers and around 200 elks are shot every year. Hunting with dogs is permitted from 1 October. Local dog clubs arrange annual tracking tests to test the dogs’ ability to scent and track game. The amazingly detailed stamps are painted by the swedish animal artist bo Lundwall, whose style we recognize from the 2013 WWf booklet of loons and grebes. This year’s booklet is complemented by three maximum cards, which are a lovely addition to any collection.

Interest in old traditions and regional clothing first appeared in europe in early 1900s as a result of large social changes occurring in a short period of time. The first Åland folk costumes were created for the 1908 song festival in Åland and were based on patterns and descriptions of clothing used by the rural farming population until the mid-1800s. today, all Åland municipalities have their own folk dress.

A large deal of what we know about Åland folk costumes is owed to Viking Sundberg from the village svartsmara in finström. based on antique finds in Åland, he created the Åland scarf buckle depicted on the stamp. The silver buckle secures the scarf and is used with all female Åland folk dresses. several mu-nicipalities also have their own jewellery.

However, the regional differences are small in Åland, says the silversmith Per-Åke Johansson, who became guardian of the Viking sundberg’s collection after his death. Åland has had no jewellery production of its own in the past and, as seafaring people the Ålanders most likely brought jewellery home from many different places.

The Swiss stamp depicts a folk costume brooch used with the female folk dress for the canton of bern. The bernese traditional dress has remained more or less unchanged since the late 1800s. The brooch in silver and fine filigree work is one of several brooches securing a black shoulder yoke worn over a white blouse.

With the naked eye it’s difficult to detect, but this year’s Christmas stamps are, in fact, three dimensional paper creations by sweden’s top paper artist Fideli Sundqvist.

The 2015 Christmas stamps focus on Christmas mail, and are out on 9 October as tradition has it. The swedish paper artist and illustrator Fideli Sundqvist created the stamp motifs entirely in paper before photographing them. she has made a name for herself through her extraordinary paper artwork for, among others Louis Vuitton, and has also released a book about paper.

The custom of sending Christmas cards goes back to the mid-1800s. send-ing Christmas greetings through the mail remains the most popular way and, ac-cording to a 2014 survey, this is also what recipients enjoy the most. Most people

also prefer Christmas stamps on their cards for the right Christmas feel.

Åland Post has issued special Christmas stamps since 2004. The no-value indicator “Julpost” (Christmas mail) means that the stamps may be used to post Christmas greetings slightly cheaper within Åland, to finland and sweden during a limited period in november and december. The stamps can be used for postage all the year round as well. The value of the denomination equals the latest Christmas mail postage.

Auf der JAgd

Åland hat einen großen Rehwildbestand

und in vielen Kommunen gibt es eine Jagd-

gesellschaft in jedem Dorf. Fanny Sjögren

und Robert Skaglund sind in der Jagdge-

sellschaft von Lövö aktiv und nehmen uns

mit auf die Pirsch im nebligen Herbstwald.

Beide haben die Jagd seit Generationen im

Blut. „Die Jagdleidenschaft wird einem wohl

in die Wiege gelegt“, sagt Fanny.

Der Reiz der Jagd liegt in der Vielfalt der

Eindrücke – Erholung im stillen Wald, Span-

nung bei der Treibjagd und danach gesel-

liges Beisammensein am Kamin. Meist be-

ginnt man mit Federwild, geht dann über

auf Hase und Rehwild und setzt mit der

Elchjagd fort. Fannys bestes Jagderlebnis

ist der erste Elch, den sie erlegt hatte. „Aber

jede Jagd hat ihren Reiz“, stellen Fanny und

Robert fest.

Metsällä

Ahvenanmaalla on runsas kauriskanta,

ja monissa kunnissa on joka kylällä oma

metsästysseuransa. Lövön metsästysseu-

ran aktiivijäsenet Fanny Sjögren ja Robert

Skaglund kutsuvat meidät kaurisjahtiin su-

muiseen syysmetsään. Metsästys on heillä

molemmilla verissä jo sukupolvien takaa.

”Tavallisesti kiinnostus metsästystä kohtaan

on saatu joltakin sukulaiselta”, Fanny sanoo.

Metsästyksen viehätys piilee monipuo-

lisessa elämyksessä – hiljaisen metsän ren-

touttavaa ilmapiiriä, ajon jännitystä ja jah-

din päätteeksi tarinoidaan yhdessä nuotiol-

la. Ensin metsästetään yleensä lintuja, sen

jälkeen jäniksiä ja kauriita ja sitten hirviä.

Fannyn paras metsästysmuisto on hänen

ensimmäinen hirvenkaatonsa. ”Kaikenlai-

sessa jahdissa on kuitenkin oma viehätyk-

sensä”, Fanny ja Robert toteavat

Hunting

Åland has a large population of roe deer

and in many places there is a hunting

club in every village. Fanny Sjögren and

Robert Skaglund are active members of

Lövö hunting club, and invited us to join

the hunt in the foggy autumn woods. They

have both had hunting in their blood for

generations. "It's quite normal here to gain

an interest in hunting from someone in the

family," says Fanny.

The charm of hunting lies in the variety

of the experience – the relaxation offered

by the quiet forest, the excitement of the

hunt and good company around the fire

afterwards. Most people start with birds,

before going on to hares, roe deer and

eventually elk. Fanny's best hunting mem-

ory is her first elk. "But all hunting has its

charm," say both Fanny and Robert.

The stamp focuses on the society’s most important task: rescuing human lives in Åland waters. The volunteer crews are on call day and night year round.

The Åland Sea Rescue Society has stations in Mariehamn, brändö, eckerö, Lumpar-land, saltvik and Vårdö, all equipped with sea rescue vessels. Thus, the sea rescue volunteers reach all parts of Åland and take part in most rescue operations within the Åland province. In 2014, they carried out 144 rescue missions. With increasing boat-ing tourism and the coast guard in Åland closing stations, the number of missions will most likely continue to rise. The society also performs search missions, towing, medical transportations, oil salvaging and

firefighting. to prevent future sea accidents, the society also actively works with accident prevention by teaching behavior and safety at sea in schools.

The society is a non-profit organi-zation funded by donations, membership fees and the gaming company PAF in Åland. The largest and oldest station in Mariehamn has 5 full time employees, while the other rescue stations are main-tained only with the help of around 130 active volunteers.
