Global IBA In November of 2009 the Beaufort Barrier Islands IBA was
designated as an area of national importance by the Audubon Society. This was due to the very large numbers of shore, sea
and wading birds that either breed, winter and use the islands as a rest stop during their migrations. Many of these birds are
endangered or threatened species. In May of 2015 further study of the islands led to their
designation as an area of Global importance.
