Ashley Tubridy releases her first EP a month before she plays the 02

BY FINIAN COGHLAN

Mullingar's latest musical prodigy Ashley Turbridy releases her first EP today, October 25 - at just 11 years of age.

From the Outside In features four songs, all written by the Mullingar girl, and was recorded in Big Space Studios in Newry, Co Down by Declan Legge.

The mini-album will get its first big airing next month in front of 10,000 people when Ashley performs at the Cheerios Childline Concert on November 20 at the 02 in Dublin alongside The Wanted, Shane Filan, Little Mix, and Union J World.

Her star was given a first national airing on the Late Late Toy Show in 2011, when she was just nine, and on her most recent appearance last month she was invited to play the prestigious Childline gig on November 20.

The self-taught singer/songwriter, who at

the age of eight became the youngest ever member of the Irish Music Recording Organisation (IMRO), has already played at Electric Picnic, and alongside a veritable who's who of the Irish music scene including Asian, Declan O'Rourke, Mary Black, Paddy Casey, Klla, Bressie, Cronin, Mundy, John Spillane, and Keith Duffy.

"I started picking up the guitar at around four and a half years old and at about five I would sit in my room and create music despite having no one else in the household being able to sing a note between them!" said Ashley.

Despite her young age, she says her songs are inspired by her experiences and interaction with the world around her.

"My interpretation of relationships with others and how this affects my life in many different ways emotionally is the trigger. These emotions and thoughts and feelings are expressed through my music and lyrics. I think that at one time or another we have all felt emotions or experienced similar pain attached to certain situations in our lives and for this reason I believe that people of all ages can relate in some way to my songs."

Ashley developed her playing at home, at school, in concert and also whilst busking, and can be

sometimes found on Grafton Street, Shop Street in Galway. or in her native Mullingar, where every Christmas she plays with Niall Horan, Bressie and a host of local musicians to raise money for LARCC cancer retreat.

Ashley dedicates a lot of her time and energies to charity. When she was just eight, she donated four of her own songs to a CD in aid of ISPCC's Childline, which raised thousands for the charity. She has also contributed to an album for TEAM, the homeless charity, and played at Niall Horan's Birthday Golf Classic, which raised tens of thousands for Autism Ireland and other charities.

Her calling card was "Friends Forever", the song she performed on the toy show in December 2011.

By January 2012, the song went to number two on the iTunes Ireland download charts and without any physical CDs available, went Top 30 in the Irish charts.

In the summer of 2012 she played for President Michael D Higgins, who was so enthused that he wrote her a personal letter thanking her.

From The Outside In will be released on October 25, and will be available in record stores throughout Ireland and will also be available to download from iTunes.

'Doing what we do best' - Ocean FM After nine years on air, Ocean FM will re-apply for its licence in December this year.

As the third most listened to local station in the country and the recipient of a string of industry awards, the staff are quietly confident that they will be given the opportunity to do what they do best for another

ten years. Tim Collins, Ocean FM

CEO, elaborated. "We have had an extraordinary run of success in the past 18 months. We've won the prestigious IMRO

Award for commitment to Irish music two years in a row. We've got seven nominations in this year's PPI awards. And our radio drama, Francisco, has been nominated for The

Prix Europa in Europe's most sought after radio and television

awards. "We have been preparing

for this application for the past two years and work is now well advanced", he added.

Ocean FM broadcasts to South Donegal, Co. Sligo and North Leitrim from studios in all three counties.

The company employs 20 full-time and 20 part-time staff. Household names like Niall Delaney, Kevin Blessing,

Margaret Carr-Flynn, Big Bernie, Pauric McShea, Daniel

Browne, Francie Boylan, Shane Smyth, Darragh Cox, Paschal Mooney and Marion Fitzgerald have entertained and informed people across

the North West for the past nine years.

The station was founded on a belief that local news, sport and current affairs are the lifeblood of local radio and has delivered on this seven days a week across the region. Sport has also been a key part of the station's success, with live commentary of club and county matches in the three counties and live soccer from the Showgrounds part of the staple output.

"Our sports team has travelled as far away as New York

and The Ukraine following the exploits of our local Gaelic football and soccer teams", Mr Collins said. The station's coverage

of Donegal's journey to

Croke Park last year has been nominated for a PPI Award and its treatment of minority sports has been a core feature.

Ocean has particularly close links with South Donegal with state of the art studios in Gruagorm House in Donegal Town and opt out programming

including news, sport and a weekly current affairs programme, Destination Donegal.

"Our coverage of Donegal news such as the Traveller racism

row in Ballyshannon won a Law Society Media Award for us this year," said Tim Collins.

"We are looking forward to serving listeners across the North West for another 10 years", he added.

Leixlip singer songwriter delighted to have been finalist in Hennessy contest by Emer Kelly

THERE was disappointment for Leixlip singersongwriter

Liam McDermott in the final of the 2013 IMRO Christie Hennessy song contest in Tralee last Saturday night (19th October).

Liam, from Castletown, performed his own song 'Amour Fou' — French for insane love — with his band 'Funzo' against nine other finalists at the Carlton

Hotel. Victory, the prestigious

prize and a cheque for €1,000 courtesy of IMRO and Tralee Chamber Alliance eluded him, however.

But Liam was this week upbeat about the final and delighted to have been a part of a memorable night for him and his band.

"It was a brilliant night! A great night!" he said on Tuesday (22nd October).

Liam, like his fellow finalists was chosen from more

than 200 entrants for the final of the nationwide contest

held in honour of the famous Tralee singer songwriter,

the late Christie Hennessy.

"We were put up in the hotel which was a nice touch," said Liam, who has previously won national song writing contests with his band.

"It was a very pleasant night," he added of his experience in Tralee last Saturday night.

"And I got to meet some very interesting people."

Before the finalists performed, the late Christie

Hennessy's daughter Hermonie and Aongus

O'Rourke (RTE) performed some of his songs.

The contest winner was Alan Kavanagh, aged 25, from Ashbourne in County Meath with his song 'Bitter Man'.

"I've been checking out Alan's music over the last couple of days and he's very good," said Liam, who has performed at more than 250 gigs with Funzo since 2009 including music festivals Oxegen and Electric

Picnic. Alan released his first

single when he was studying for a music degree in

Dundalk Institute of Technology and has since gone

on to support artists including The Coronas, Luan Parle and Asian.

"It was such an honour to have my name next to some of the country's. finest songwriters and to win was just such a surprise," said Alan.

"The feedback and support that 'Bitter Man' has

received since has been unbelievable.

STANDARD Kieran Ruttledge, chief

executive of Tralee Chamber Alliance, said this week

that the Christie Hennessy celebration goes from strength to strength. "I was amazed at the standard

of musicians on show at the event and it is great to hear them playing their own music to an appreciative

audience," he said. "This year the addition of

the song writing workshops and the launch of the Whole World Band certainly

added to the occasion and all the musicians were very complimentary about the set-up of the whole weekend and the opportunity

to meet with other likeminded musicians. Tralee
