A HISTORYOF INNOVATION

France – 11 April 2013

Groupe M6

At the 50th Mip TV fair, which took place from

8 to 11 April 2013, Nicolas de Tavernost,

Chairman of the Management Board of Groupe M6, was

awarded the very first Mip TV Médaille d’Honneur award.

The Groupe M6 boss received his accolade from Paul Zilk, CEO of Reed Midem, the company which organises Mip TV, during the gala dinner celebrating Mip TV’s 50th anniversary. The dinner was held on 10 April at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes and attended by all the leading lights of the TV industry from around the world.

“With the inaugural Mip TV 2013 Médaille d’Honneur, we’re delighted to honour six great industry personalities, highly recognised in their respective countries and by the international community, who have through their talent, leadership and passion, played a signifi cant role in the global television industry,” so Laurine Garaude, Director of Reed Midem’s Television Division when the laureates were announced end of March 2013.

An honoured and joyous Nicolas de Tavernost accepted the award on the night. The once labelled “the one channel too many” at its beginnings has not only come a very long way since its launch on 1 March 1987; it has also succeeded in establishing its credentials among the top tier of TV operators. 2012 was yet another excellent year for “the little channel that’s going places”, in terms of both its ratings – M6 confi rmed its position as France’s third channel – and fi nancial results. It goes without saying that Nicolas de Tavernost, who has been involved with M6 since the very start, is largely behind the channel’s stellar rise. Today, he reigns over an audiovisual powerhouse that generates revenues totalling €1.4 billion.

Clearly, the channel that posted losses for the fi rst fi ve years of its existence has turned things around spectacularly, which underscores the leadership credentials of the boss of M6, whom the media and sometimes even his colleagues, like to nickname ‘the warrior’ or ‘the wild one’, ‘the autocrat’ or ‘the buccaneer’. Previously, in 2009, de Tavernost already bagged the Le nouvel Economiste’s Manager of the Year Award, in recognition of his leadership qualities. “Transforming a

television channel into such a multi-faceted company demands tremendous dynamism and impeccable management,” so the magazine.

Recently asked about his reputation for stinginess on radio station France Info, de Tavernost replied: “I hate spending money unnecessarily, so when the company spends a euro, I always ask myself whether we could have just spent 50 cent. By contrast, when spending my own money or with my family I’m pretty easy-going”.

Stingy or not, Nicolas de Tavernost “certainly invested in the programming schedule at the right time” according to the journalists Marc Pellerin and François Viot, authors of the book M6 Story, la saga de la chaîne en trop. And they add: “M6 has always known how to innovate”. Indeed, this willingness to break new ground was what prompted the birth of some of the programmes that went on to seal M6’s reputation, like Capital, Zone Interdite, Loft Story, L’Amour est dans le pré and Scènes de Ménages. A stickler for details, de Tavernost never hesitates to propose a topic to be covered or to interfere with the grid. Pellerin and Viot confi rm this: “He’s both all ears and incredibly hands on, a control freak. The way he sees it, when you’re in charge, anything goes. So he frequently intervenes in the programming grid”.

Nevertheless, de Tavernost likes to encourage an entrepreneurial mindset within the Group, as Robin Leproux, Vice-Chairman of the Board and the man

TWO AWARDS IN ONE DAY!

On 10 April 2013, Bernard Brochand, Deputy-Mayor of Cannes, also awarded Nicolas de Tavernost the Gold Medal of the City of Cannes. The award ceremony took place at 11:30 at the city hall and was attended by Reed Midem CEO Paul Zilk.

“TRANSFORMING A TELEVISION CHANNEL INTO SUCH A MULTI-FACED COMPANY DEMANDS TREMENDOUS DYNAMISM AND IMPECCABLE MANAGEMENT.”Le Nouvel Economiste

in charge of the group’s commercial activities and development, explains: “Nicolas is mad keen on initiatives and development. Whenever he is pre-sented a project that stands up to scrutiny and feels that his employee is convinced of its potential and determined to make a success of it, he shows faith in that person and immediately gives them a green light”. M6 Programming Director Bibiane Godefroid concurs: “I passed my degree in ‘Tavernology’. What people need to understand about his approach is that he constantly puts his staff on the spot, initially saying no in order to get them to pull out all the stops to convince him to change his mind”.

Over the years, Groupe M6 has succeeded in pegging back its dependence on TV advertising revenue by diversifying into multiple other areas of activity. Today, the combined earnings from these diversifi cation businesses accounts for 40 per cent of the Group’s revenue, which has been crucial, especially in light of the volatility of the TV advertising market.

Another of the Group’s strengths resides in the fact that it has strong brands which make it “highly popular with the French public”, Marc Pellerin and François Viot observe. In fact they went on to predict that “in an increasingly fragmented audiovisual landscape it is the historical channels with a strong identity and close ties with their viewers that will survive, or maybe even prosper”.

Besides Nicolas de Tavernost, other recipients of the Médaille d’Honneur at the gala dinner, included Beta Film CEO Jan Mojto, CBS Global Distribution Group CEO Armando Nunez, the former ITC/Polygram and 20th Century Fox manager Armando Nunez Sr, Masao Takiyama from Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan’s Television Networks, and BskyB Managing Director Content, Sophie Turner Laing.

NICOLAS DE TAVERNOST QUOTATIONS – A COLLECTION:

“As long as I remain equally eager to look over the previous day’s viewing figures in the lift on the way up to my office in the morning and get really mad when they are mediocre, and as long my blood boils at the first bad showing in the ratings I will carry on doing what I do.”

“Everyone is entitled to make mistakes. Otherwise the wheels would have come off long ago. We’ve committed plenty of errors ourselves. The trick is to do so slightly less frequently than everyone else and to take remedial action as soon as they come to light.”

“I believe that a manager, a boss, is always entitled to interfere. That’s my idea of democracy.”

“I had the good fortune to fail my entrance exam to France’s [elitist] National School of Administration. That has encouraged me to take risks and create openings.”

“If you work in television, you shouldn’t want to think of anything else after getting home in the evening.”

In the April issue of the Promedia media news service, RTL Radio Deutschland CEO Gert Zimmer talks about the challenges currently facing radio in Germany. Germany – 11 April 2012

In a guest commentary for Promedia, Gert Zimmer describes how the boundaries between the originally clearly distinguishable types of media have become blurred. Users now only care about what content they consume – the medium itself has receded into the background. Says Zimmer: “Regulated radio is in direct competition with non-regulated online resources.” They include streaming services, online radio, aggregators, and radio-like sites. Given these developments, the various and in many cases restrictive regulations to ensure diversity of opinion in the state media laws are no longer in keeping with the times. Therefore, says Zimmer: “There is an urgent need for harmonisationand liberalisation of the state media laws in order to effectively safeguard the competitiveness of private broadcasters.”

Zimmer also warns of the increasing market distortion caused by the economically advantaged public radio stations. He said that they – supported by user fees – interfere excessively in the advertising market and keep launching numerous new digital offerings and niche stations. Zimmer: “The goal should be to eliminate competitive disadvantages for private broadcasting and increase the overall price level for radio.” Finally, he urges: “Only binding guidelines in the state laws will enable private providers to tackle the already unequal competition with the public stations with some confi dence.”

In addition to his guest commentary Gert Zimmer also gave the industry news service an interview. In it he reiterated that, given its present structures, radio as a highly regulated regional media cannot compete as equals with unregulated providers. Zimmer: “To put it clearly: We are not afraid of competition. But we are competing for listeners’ attentions and, in the future, for advertising budgets. No matter what streaming provider or aggregator we’re talking about: we need a level playing fi eld for fair competition.”

The main prerequisite for a level playing fi eld is a broad understanding on the part of regulators and policymakers for the interests of private radio in the changing media landscape. In closing, Zimmer said: “The regulators have to think about what they’re trying to achieve, and what role regional radio should play in the future.”

TV magazine Hazon Kivul awarded for the objectivity and clarity of its reporting.Hungary – 9 April 2013

For its political magazine Hazon Kivul RTL Klub recently won the “Pulitzer Memorial Prize” in Budapest. The jury explained the selection by pointing to the thoroughness of the editors’ research and objectivity and clarity of the reporting. The magazine Hazon Kivul sheds light on the effects of political decisions on the Hungarian population.

According to Mihaly Kovacs, editor of the format, the secret to the success of Hazon Kivul lies in the fact that the editors of the magazine look at the situation of the Hungarian society with an open mind. In addition, they investigate the effects of the political decisions from the perspective of the population and not that of the political decision-makers.

The “Pulitzer Memorial Prize” was founded in 1989 by Paul Fabry, an American businessman of Hungarian origin, with the agreement of the heirs of Joseph Pulitzer, the founder of the famous “Pulitzer Prize” in the US. Like Fabry, the press mogul originally came from Hungary. The “Pulitzer Memorial Prize” is among the most prestigious awards for recognition in Hungary today.

The TV magazine Hazon Kivul has been on the air since March 2005 and has received several awards such as the “Camera Hungaria 2010”, the “Hegeto Honorka Memorial Prize” and the “Authentic Public Information Award”.
