Thanks one and all for your WONDERFUL adverƟsing contribuƟons! Stay tuned for more info as the year progresses! The next issue will be our annual Memorial issue, with its special adverƟsing theme featuring tributes to human and canine friends loved and lost. Though always biƩersweet, sharing your memories of your dearly departed helps keep them close in the hearts and minds of all who loved them. Niko has been a part of our lives for the past 14 months, coming to us at 11 months of age. He came to us from Erin Campbell, giving us our first entry into the racing and showing world. During that time, we have been active in travel, showing, racing (both do-mestic and international) with plans to continue these activities into 2013.

Niko is our first whippet, and we now have a total of two whippets with the addition of Mia this month, and “Fee-Bee” our 11 year old bichon in our house now. Niko has been a great addition to our household and our lives, leading us to new experiences and friends we have now. Niko has been a delight to have, enjoy, and share his rambunc-tious attitude and fun-loving nature with others (both canine and human). He’s a good traveler, playful companion with his housemates, and we are glad to call him ours.

TULSA SIGHTHOUND ASSOCIATION Tulsa, OK

January 26/27, 2013

T ulsa Sighthound Association kicked off 2013 with a great meet at the Couch Ranch in Vinita, Oklahoma.

Saturday saw an entry of 16 with a good dis-bursement of all grades including two FTEs. The weather was decent to us Okies, but to those northerners who drove down it was downright glorious! The meet was won by Ziggy (Ziggy Stardust of Wyndsor ARX, NARX3, TRP, PR7, TDX, RN, FCH) which also gave him his SRA title! Con-grats to Ule and Connie on yet another title on a great running dog! I believe Ziggy was also recently awarded his Champion Tracker title! AWESOME! Talk about a well-rounded whippet! The NARX points went to Ziggy and Goldie while the ARX points went to some new-comers to CWA… Beyonce (Ch. Tru-Luv’s Beyonce Heat SC, FCH, PR) was awarded 3 and Dodger (Ch. Liberty’s Why Should I Worry SC, PR) and Payton (Wildhare Synco-pated Rhythm PR) split the bottom point with .5 each. We had a great turnout for the match, judged by AKC hound judge Don Duerkson. His placements were: Jersey, Aine, Oprah

and Payton. For lunch, we had a Mexican feast provided by Amanda Wetzel.

Many of us were thrilled to be able to spend a little time with Dwight and Paula Caffee’s girl, Fillie. At 16 yrs and 2 months you could see the love that Fillie had for her people! Dwight and Paula lost Fillie just 5 days lat-

er… Hug your whippets tight. God Speed Fillie!

Sunday’s weather threatened to be a little more ominous but the Dog Racing Gods al-lowed us to continue with only a few minor sprinkles and a little wind…This is Ooooook-lahoma after all! We had 14 whippets running on Sunday with a full flight for the High Point race. Our meet winner was Joey (Tru-Luv’s Enjoy The Moment ARX, NARX2, DPCX). The NARX points were awarded to Joey (3) and Ziggy (1). The ARX points were split between Dodger and Serena (FC Tru-Luv’s Serena Wilyawin SC, LCM, PR) with 2 for both of them. Sunday’s match was judged by Emily Miller (all around hound enthusiast) and her place-ments were: Serena, Joey, Goldie, Dodger.

TSA would like to thank everyone who is getting involved and helping to make our race meets a success! We all know that it takes more than a village to put on a great

weekend of racing… So to all of you that have helped a great big YEE HAW!

Watch for more exciting updates for the First Annual Redneck Racing weekend…October 19-20, 2013. -submitted by Donna Bennett

GEORGIA RAG RACING Hull, GA

February 9/10, 2013

G RR would like to welcome all the first time entered participants and their dogs who came out to our

race meet this weekend. We had 10 first time entered dogs on Saturday and yes they made up half of the entry! We hope every-one enjoyed the great winter weather, food and racing. A couple of the FTEs walked away with some ARX points. Saturday we started the day with 23 adult dogs. A couple of our FTEs (Cato and Fifi) quickly found themselves in the high point races and stayed there.

Our meet winner for Saturday was Beau, followed closely by Dude. The top set of ARX points went to FTE Cato and the second set to Oen.

Our conformation judge for Saturday was Ellen Feldheim. Her first place went to Bea, second to Beau, third to Sage and fourth to Jackson. Our Best combined in event on Saturday went To Beau! Sunday we began the day with 20 adult dogs and one of our FTEs from yesterday, Cato, started the day as an “A” dog. Today Dude had the winning attitude and won his first race meet and walked away with 4 NARX points! He was followed by Beau. Cato again took the top ARX points and Saturday’s FTE Fifi earned the second set.

ALAMO AREA WHIPPET ASSOCIATION McKinney, TX

February 23/24, 2013

M y mom is too busy just now to sit down and write a race report. She’s busy grading papers –

whatever that means – and clacking away on those little black buttons like she always does. Usually, I just lay at her feet waiting for her to drop a Cheeto or offer a good back scratch, but this night I thought I might do a little more than clean up the floor or create a brief distraction. I thought I’d help her write her race report. Can I do that? Yeah. Why would you ask? I was there after all and can probably tell you what it was like better than she can. I mean, who knows better: the racer or the race secretary? Saturday started out a Whippet-shivering day. I knew it was Saturday ‘cause I wasn’t in my crate in the living room by 7:00 a.m. with mom squeaking some command to be good and that she’d see me tonight. More-over, I knew it was cold ‘cause I was in my crate in the back of mom’s open car staring at the beckoning track lined by poles and pink tape. It seemed to wave to me in the brisk breeze, waving me forward, beckoning me into its pristine and unpolluted speed-way. It knew my name, and it repeated it over and over, “… Sully… Sully…”. NO, wait. That was mom yelling at me to stop barking and having a fit. She promised my turn would come soon. And it did… sort of. Our first program of the day had four races, the first of which was filled with FTEs, new initiates into the game of Whippet life. Flare, Babe, Trixie, Stretch, and Austin all burst out the box though not all exactly in a forward direction. Silly kids,

if they’d just listened to Jewels, the only meet-seasoned one in the bunch, they’d know they needed only to come out straight and hard and head for the bouncing fur-ball mocking them with squawks as it slid away. Yet, they must have caught on quickly to her coaching and to their own coursing skills as they soon sped their way down the track, Flare coming first to the line and showing Jewels in second that she knew how to do this racing thing. The second and third races were filled with practiced contenders who would eventually prove their top speeds as the later programs sorted and sifted us into well-matched groups. For me, though, these dogs ran like the ground was made of winter molasses; it was a nearly unbearable eternity for my turn to come, and you know in dog-time that’s about 30 minutes. On this day, the high point was made of three dogs: Gooey, Sealey and me, Sully. When the colored-doors banged open, I was clean from the box like a bullet from a gun, but Gooey and Sealey seemed to have the same ammunition, as they broke well and

dug the dirt with excitement, the three of us side by side for just a bit. Now, Gooey – al-most like she was better than me – began to pull away, closing the gap on the furry mock-n-squawk. Meanwhile I – making sure I was still better than somebody – widened the gap between me and my house-mate, Sealey, and the three of us finished in just that order. I dunno. Maybe Gooey’s dad gave her a do-nut or something, cause earlier I’d begged mom to give me a donut, and she said no, it would hurt my racing-tummy. I think though that if I had had the donut, I could’ve beat Gooey. Mom messed up my whole day right from the start. In the second program, we had a lot more dogs in the high point race but, the good news, we had less time to wait for our turn. In the second trip down the track, I ran with Gooey, Dodger, Flare, Cian, and Sealey. There we were, waiting for the box doors to lift their heavy weight out of the way, all trash-talking the squawker and maybe each other a bit, too, when at last the clang-thwump of the door sounded, and we all tore our way out. With a field that full, we found ways to ad-just: to slip in, to slide out, to square up. Exhilaration was high; so high I’m not sure I can find words to fit, but I can say that the track was gone in an instant, and in the fury and the flurry, I found myself third over the line. In front of me were Gooey and Dodg-er. Don’t ask me how that could be. I can’t possibly explain it except to say Dodger’s mom must give out donuts, too. I have to talk to mom about this whole matter.

If here I said the third program went like the second, it’d be sort of true and sort of not. It was, after all, the same for me since I came in third again and still had eaten no donuts, but for Dodger and Gooey, it wasn’t the same. Though they joke that the trailing dog’s view never changes, I saw it change. Those two were pounding earth and saying prayers, legs and feet reaching, grabbing, pulling, and pushing. The faster they went, the faster they had to go. Gooey had the lead by a just a ticking spot on her black and white coat, but Dodger wasn’t about to give up the bout. Representing red and white dogs like me, he kept at the work, pushing the wind out of his way and pressing his paws like pistons in an engine. It was pretty amazing, even from behind, and those finish line fans must have thought so, too, ‘cause when Dodger inched Gooey out at the last, they were doing lots of sighing and wowing. So, all of this leads us to the last program and too soon to my last turn. I could pre-tend that it was boring and just finish up this whole people-report to go look for stray Cheetos on the floor or in an unsuspecting hand. I’m not kidding; I heard mom grab the bag about a paragraph ago. But, it was-n’t boring – not at all. For example, the final program saw a dog, Austin, who started his FTE day as the last dog in the first race of the first two programs, figure out just how this game is played. He took first place in the first race of the third program, and if that wasn’t proof he had untied the twisty-tie of his earlier misunderstanding, he took first place in the semi-feature of the fourth program. Good thing for me we ran out of

programs or else he might have been eating donuts and passing me, too. After Austin’s pretty nifty improvement – yeah, Whippets can use “nifty” and still be cool – I was totally inspired to show Gooey and Dodger my own improvements. Ad-mittedly, I wondered a little if they were feeling tired at all, cause I know I wasn’t minding the waiting for my turn as much as I minded earlier in the day. Still, my chance was at hand, and I had to make the most of it. If nothing else, I wanted to make mom proud. She loves me so much and thinks I’m so funny and sweet, the least I could do was find one more way to make her feel guilty about not giving me what I ask for when I ask for it. It was my duty, you know? You get that, right? Anyway, our last high point called together Gooey, Dodger, Jersey, Cian, Jacob and me. I hadn’t seen Jacob in the high point before so I didn’t know what to expect. All of us crouched down to the grates, peering out at the mock-n-squawk, some of us seeping sounds from our throats, others pawing at the bars, a queue for release. Forever passed and then it came: clang-thwump. We were out. Hearts racing; feet pounding. Hearts pounding; feet racing. We threw ourselves down the poled-off track, pink, fluttering tape now like pom-poms cheering our way, encouraging our speed, enjoying our lives. Crowded in our craze, some of us shifted place but I stayed my straight, eyes on the bouncing fur-ball sliding away in chunky, condescending laughter. Gooey did the

same. So did Dodger. It’s odd, so little time for so much speed, and the track was nearly gone before it be-gan. The last 50 yards – Gooey, me and Dodger; the last 20 – Gooey, Dodger and me; the last 10 – Gooey, DoSuldgerly; the last three – Dodger and me. Gooey had crossed the finish line first, and while it was the closest I’d come to beating Dodger on this day, he still took me by a head.

Don’t get me wrong now; I’ll not hang mine for it. These were well-performing hounds that showed such excellence here that even the sun came out to watch us. Our shivers by 3:00 p.m. had left us and fatigue, along with satisfaction, had taken their place. In the end, it was just a good day. Now, I hope you’ll tell mom that I did a good job with the race report – seeing as I was trying to help and all. I said earlier that my mom loves me, but if you didn’t already know, I love her, too. She’s good to me – taking me to races when she should be grading – but more than that, I’m hoping if you tell her how much you like this story, she’ll give me a donut for writing it. Happy racing, everyone. – Sullivan

MID-ATLANTIC WHIPPET RACING ASSOCIATION Dendron, VA

February 23/24, 2013

M AWRA had a great start to the 2013 Mid-Atlantic racing season with two 30 dog meets.

It was nice to shake off the winter blues and get together as a club again. We were also joined by Emily Carabello (Moonbeam) and her co-owner Melissa Matthews from North Carolina, Carl Morgan from Ohio, and Angie Bass (Devereaux) from Tennessee. We weren’t quite able to shake off the win-ter weather and Saturday was cold, rainy and downright dreary. We made the most of the situation with lots of tents to keep everyone dry (and working)! There were several contenders for points with very close B races that kept the line judges on their toes. One constant was CWA National Champion, Rachel. She led box to finish in all 4 races for her first undefeated meet win to earn 5 NARX points. Littermates Benjamin and Lucy tied for 2nd place and split the bottom sets of NARX

points with 2 each. A third littermate, Bose, followed closely behind picking up 5ARX points. We had a chance to see Fifi, fresh off her point wins at the GRR meet, pick up 3 ARX points and show she was a true contender in the A/B races. Zest rounded out the points for the day picking up 1 ARX. Although she was alone in her puppy races, Maya shows great promise and improve-ment. Our battle for the turtle award was no con-test in the rain and wind. Scarlett tried her best to make it down the track and back to her owner as safely and slowly as possible, thus assuring a completely defeated turtle win. MAWRA club member Amber Arm-bruster made a custom fleece turtle blanket for the Saturday winner. Terri Deluca brought her portable generator so we could have hot soups and barbeque for our potluck. Fortunately, most of the rain stopped shortly after lunch, just in time for the match and proofing runs.

Saturday match line-up: Judge Roberta Faulk and #1 Peacock, #2 Bomber, #3 Bacon, #4 Bebe

February 23/24, 2013

Our match was judged by Roberta Faulk, a local AKC Great Pyrenees breeder. She placed Peacock, Bomber, Bacon and Bebe in her final line-up. Peacock would earn the DPC leg. Please note there were a higher number of scratches at our Saturday meet because we needed some of the C/D dogs for afternoon proofing. We were able to proof 3 FTE’s for the Sun-day meet, box break another 2 dogs for fu-ture proofing and work with some of the older puppies that will be racing at our May meet. We adjourned to our favorite little Italian restaurant in Surry, VA with 16 people for a Saturday night dinner full of lively conversa-tion and debate. Sunday was a much nicer day with inter-mittent cloud cover and a bit of sunshine. We started the day with 32 adults, including

3 FTE entries and 1 puppy. We had a rare event with a split high point. Several of our dogs from Saturday moved from A to B and we were also joined by the Licketysplit crew for the Sunday meet. Once again, Rachel went undefeated for an-other 5 NARX points. Beau was second for 3 ARX points with two strong high point 2nd places, Fifi was 3rd in the meet for 1 NARX point and 5 ARX points. Rounding out the points was Bose earning 3 ARX points and finishing her ARX title! Con-gratulations to Carl Morgan. This is the 3rd of the Bonzer x Paige litter to finish an ARX. Crime Spree took the bottom ARX point. Our turtle award once again went to Scar-lett. Erin and Patrick will have a lovely, but gaudy, addition to their turtle statuary col-lection.

Sunday match line-up: Judge Julie Negri and #1 Spree, #2 Fifi, #3 Augie, #4 Bebe

MID-ATLANTIC WHIPPET RACING ASSOCIATION Dendron, VA

February 23/24, 2013

Early season conditioning was a factor in the points and races with several dogs not able to maintain the same stamina or speed for 2 days after the winter break. Our Sunday match was judged by club mem-ber Julie Negri. She placed Crime Spree, Fifi, Bomber and Bebe. No DPC leg was awarded as all the dogs were finished champions. I would be remiss in not thanking everyone who helped make the race meet a success. Thanks to Shelton Carter for setting up the box and field on Friday and box operating on Saturday. Thanks to Carl Morgan for box operating on Sunday. Thanks to Terri Deluca, our trophy chairper-son and potluck generator provider.

Thanks to Erin McNeill for helping with the board and for head line judging. Thanks to Deb Hanna who has found her calling and her voice as our permanent club paddock master. Thanks to all the MAWRA club members and visitors who helped set up the field, line judged, caught and boxed dogs all weekend. We couldn’t have a successful meet without every single person pitching in to help! Most of all, thanks to Lori and Ken Stebritz for allowing us the continued use of LaQuest Whippet Heaven for our Virginia events. We look forward to our official box practice weekend at the end of March and our next race meet at Ft. Mott in May! -submitted by Kristen Fredericks

A NICE WALK IN THE PARK By Jean Balint

T oday, after my walk in the park with Miss Bennett (the "Feral" Whippet,) Miss Darcy (the almost "Feral" Whip-

pet who NEVER obeys me), Miss Jane, (the Whippet who SOMETIMES obeys me), and dear Coalby (the Whippet who ALWAYS obeys me), I was thinking how nice it would be to be a normal person. By normal, I mean someone who goes out for a walk with one small obedient dog—of course it must be dressed in a fancy little coat—and comes home feeling mentally rested and relaxed. Why does that not happen to me???? I come home feeling like a battered human being: scratched, bleeding, dirty and with blood pressure that is off the charts. Could it be that when I take the leash off my sweet girls that they become wild, demented, ma-niacal wild dogs of Africa? Well, here is an example of what was sup-posed to be my relaxing walk at the park today. I went down to the lake area, which is isolated and away from the main park and unleashed my girls. BIG MISTAKE. I then proceeded to walk along the water's

edge. My girls were running back and to and having a good old time. Then, for whatever the reason, the evil Miss Bennett decided "I have had enough of this boring stuff, it's time for me to be bad and have some fun." Well, off she raced at 35 miles an hour across the field and disappeared from view. By then Miss Darcy had decided to join her daughter "in being bad and having some fun." Wending my way to the stream, where they had disappeared, I saw that both of them were checking out what was in the dis-gusting, nasty looking reeds. Miss Bennett, by the way, was on the other side of the stream and now looked like a black Whippet

Special thanks to Sheri Bakes for sharing the photos that illustrate this delightful story. While the subjects are Sheri’s own dogs and not those of the author, nevertheless, the images of a pack of hooligans joyfully

wreaking havoc in a beautiful setting just so happened to match the subject matter of Jean’s story pretty well. And since there was no photographic

evidence of Jean’s “nice walk in the park” — much to Jean’s great relief, I’m sure! — I just couldn’t resist using Sheri’s photos to illustrate the story.

A NICE WALK IN THE PARK By Jean Balint

(she is normally white). After standing there for five minutes yelling my fool head off, Miss Darcy came back. Now I had three on leash, and only one more to catch. I finally decided to give up on the yelling and started walking towards the main park. IT WORKED, and who should come racing back to me but Miss Bennett. I got her on leash and saw why she is black. She was covered with slime from the water-less muddy stream. Not only did she look terrible but she stank like a cesspool. At this point I was thinking "OMG I have to drive home with this filthy stinking animal." I had all four dogs on leash and calmly walked back towards the parking lot. How-ever, I still had to pass a small tree-filled ar-ea to get to my car. Guess what hap-pened??? A large squirrel ran right by me. Within half of a second, three were gone, all wearing their leashes. They charged across the area and were standing by the tree (where thankfully the squirrel had escaped),

and screaming like wild coyotes. (Off course everyone in the park stopped to look who could be making this God awful racket.) After realizing they had lost their prey, the girls then decided to check out the rest of the area and disappeared again. OMG, what was I going to do??? I climbed through a hole in the fence and proceeded to try and find these "Monster Dogs." Well, after much time and effort, I finally rounded up the lunatics and got them to my car. With great effort I put them all in their crates and collapsed in the driver's seat. I, too, was filthy, sweating, panting and felt like I had just finished a 25 mile marathon. Fortunately, I still had the strength to drive home and get these wicked Whippets back to the fortress where they belong (my home). Not only was I beat but I was both physically and mentally exhausted. Now do you see what I mean when I say "I would like to be a normal person and take one little dog out for a walk."
