Preparation for college courses

Research shows that students who attempt at least one AP course in high school are more likely to graduate from college in 4 years.

STUDENTS NEED TO LEARN TO THINK AND ACT INDEPENDENTLY AND RESPONSIBLY.

WE AS EDUCATORS CAN HELP DEVELOP THIS UNDERSTANDING AND SKILL SET. WE MUST TEACH OUR STUDENTS TO LEARN HOW TO

LEARN.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING IS THAT MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATORS MUST WORK TOGETHER IN SUPPORT OF

STUDENTS.

Page 19: “From Middle School to High School : Pre AP and AP Programs in High Poverty Schools”

• Middle and High School teachers meet monthly in subject areas

• Vertical Alignment Document

• Teachers lesson plan together and collaborate

• Meet AT LEAST 4 times per year. Preferably every month.

• Administrators must protect this meeting time

• Common planning time is good too

SUCCESS

• Over the last 4 years we have seen a large increase in total AP and Pre-AP participation. We have also seen an increase in students scoring 3, 4, and 5 on the AP exams.

• We have a greater number of students taking the PSAT.

• We have an open door policy for AP and Pre-AP.
