A few weeks ago, we hosted the USY regionalconvention. It was an exhilarating and exhaustingexperience. The children led our Shabbat services, anddid so beautifully.
And therein lies a tale. An objective observer of theservices would have noticed that the kids talked. A lot.
And the observer would have also noticed that there wasan ongoing, and only partially successful, attempt to quietthe kids down. Sometimes, shame was involved. “Thecongregation has allowed us into their sanctuary. Weneed to respect it…” Other times, the children wereenticed. “Look carefully at this prayer. If you think aboutit deeply, it will speak to you in unexpected ways.”Sometimes it was more of a command: “USY, quietdown.” Sometimes the leaders appealed to chapter leadersfor some good old peer pressure.
Everything worked, until it didn’t.
And at the end of the day, basing himself on the exactsame facts, the objective observer could give two entirelydifferent assessments. The first would go like this: Thekids were very unruly. They lacked decorum. They madeit hard to concentrate on the prayers. This was not theway a service is supposed to go. Very unsatisfying.
The second would go like this. Imagine a couple ofhundred Jewish kids who haven’t seen each other formonths, put together in the same room for a few hours. The conversations would be endless. But just considerthat these same kids interrupted their conversationsrepeatedly to listen to Torah discussions, to pray, to singand dance, to celebrate the Jewish tradition. All without asmartphone in their hands!
It was amazing!
Same events, same facts, two entirely different takes. The funny thing is that we can extrapolate from the USYconvention to say something significant about our ownlives.
Looked at from some abstract standard, say, the 613commandments, our lives are a mess. There’s so much wedon’t know, and even of what we know, there’s so muchwe don’t do. Objectively speaking, we are on the wrongend of the bell curve. Very unsatisfying.
On the other hand, consider how insanely busy our livesare, how demanding our responsibilities, how exhaustingour jobs, and all the rest. The idea of devoting ourselvesto things spiritual sounds crazy. But look at how much wedo. We go to services. We enrich ourselves with readingand study. We help our friends in need. We support greatcauses [like our upcoming JNF brunch, hint, hint]. Wejoin organizations that have, at their core, a dedication tothe best values we share. It’s just amazing.
You know the old expression about the optimist seeingthe glass as half full, the pessimist seeing it as half empty. My wife the engineer asks, “Why are you using that sizeglass?” We don’t have to sit in judgment about how goodor bad our Jewish lives are by some abstract standard.Instead, we just have to live our lives—with joy anddepth, with celebration and awareness, with Torah andmore Torah. Just like the USY-ers. All the rest willfollow. What is meant to happen will happen.
With wishes for a joyous Purim, the holiday whenanything, even the most unexpected, can happen,
Rabbi Robert L. Wolkoff

What A MonthMarch Will Be!
I wrote last month about all of the wonderful events andhappening at B'nai Tikvah in the coming months.February was exciting, especially the USY Convention, more than 200 high school students joyously taking overour Shabbat services and the World Wide Wrapsponsored by our Men's Club, where our Dalet and Chaistudents were taught about tefillin by Rabbi Wolkoff, theSunday morning minyan regulars and me. There weresmiles everywhere!
The month of March will be even more amazing with somuch for us to do together, culminating with our celebra-tion honoring our Rabbi and Rebbetzin on March 30th.

About Israel
When I accepted the added responsibility of our religiousschool, I was very, very nervous. I'm making progress butI'm still doing a lot of wrestling. Most educators andparents are convinced that a traditional Jewish educationrequires basic elements that will translate well for ourchildren's upcoming bar and bat mitzvah preparation.I accept and embrace this, but there is so much more thatwe must accomplish in our preparation of our childrenand of ourselves during these complicated times. It isabout Jewish identity and pride. We all profess to loveIsrael and most of us feel connected. I believe that weall need to become more knowledgeable about the issuesthat confront our Jewish State. Believe it or not, whathappens in Israel will impact your family, too. Be sure toattend the JNF breakfast on March 3rd.

Life’s Secret
In the American Classic movie, “City Slickers”, Curly(Jack Palance) was teaching Mitch (Billy Crystal) thesecret of life.
Curly: Do you know what the secret of life is? [holds upone finger] This.
Mitch : Your finger?Curly : One thing. Just one thing. You stick to that
and the rest don't mean s#*t.Mitch : But, what is the "one thing”?
Curly : [smiles] That's what YOU have to find out.
What Curly tried to teach all of us is that the secret of lifeis relationships. If we all have human connections, relationships, we lead happier, healthier lives. Curlywasn’t wrong about the importance of relationships. There is a growing body of literature and scientific papersthat demonstrate that people who are more deeplyinvolved in religion tend to enjoy better physical andmental health than individuals who are less involved inreligion. It is important to take a deeper look at thesestudies and determine the “one thing” we can learn fromthis.
Clearly, belonging to a synagogue provides everyone anopportunity to be “connected,” but does it guarantee arelationship? Is the synagogue a building/community thatis only there when you need it, or do you realize that italso needs you? What is the opportunity we have todeepen our relationships with Congregation B’nai Tikvahand the many families that are part of our kehillah.
This year, we instituted Shabbat Greeters. First of all, Iwant to thank the many people who have volunteered todate. The most important thing I hear from this initiativeis that the greeters are getting back as much as they aregiving. A warm greeting at the door makes thecongregant feel welcome but—equally important—is thereward to the greeter. Based on our experiences, we arelooking to have a “greeter” available on Sunday morningswhen there is an event in the building. Someone who canhelp let peopel know we are the warm and welcomingkehillah that we profess to be. If you have some time tospare, consider volunteering (for Shabbat or a Sunday).Who knows, you might make a new friend!
There are a group of members who have been workingdiligently to share their version of the “Greatest Show onEarth” and recreate the Purim story. While I am sure theyare thoroughly enjoying their time together in rehearsal, think about sharing with them the output of their effortsby joining in the Megillah reading. Purim is not just forkids! Rekindle friendships and memories by participatingin Purim celebrations.
At the end of this month, on March 30th, we have theopportunity to strengthen our relationships with eachother and celebrate Rabbi Wolkoff’s 40th year of spiritualguidance. As he would say, without Ruth-Ann at his side, his success would not be as great. Celebrating togetherand honoring Rabbi and Ruth-Ann strengthens ourrelationships to each other and the bonds of memory.Who knows, you might even see some interesting wormdancing!
The secret of life is human connection. Humanconnection requires investment but the returns aresignificant. Invest some time in building yourrelationship with your fellow congregants…you neverknow how great the dividends could be.

ENJOY LUNCH & LEARN WEDNESDAYS, 12 - 2PM
The Lone Soldier Center
Please join my husband, Steve, and me on Thursday evening,May 30th at 8PM, to hear about something that is very close tomy heart, the Lone Soldier Center, whose services both oursons, Adam and Jesse, benefited from when they were servingas lone soldiers in the IDF. Many people are not aware that weat B’nai Tikvah have former, current, and soon-to-be lone sol-diers as members of our congregation.
The transition from being a civilian to becoming a soldier is noteasy. The challenges of the military are intense, and thosechallenges multiply when the transition is within anotherculture and country, and the soldier’s support system of familyand friends is thousands of miles away. Adding to that, lonesoldiers often have to improve their Hebrew skills or learnHebrew from the basic aleph bet, and do so well enough tonavigate critical military communication, and daily societalneeds such as laundry, housing, transportation, and food. I canremember a few great stories about Adam and Jesse’smisinterpretations of what they thought their officers weresaying during their early days in basic training!
When I was in Israel for college, I had two friends from highschool who were “lone soldiers” in the IDF, except back thenthere was no real term for these “crazy” volunteers. They hadno resources or guidance to help them deal with the manydifficult issues they encountered. How fortunate for my boysand others that the Lone Soldier Center now exists to help maketheir transition more comfortable and to comfort their parentsby knowing that their children have somewhere to turn to forsupport.
The Lone Soldier Center was founded in memory of MichaelLevin z"l, a formerly active USYer and an American-born lonesoldier, who fell fighting in the Second Lebanon War in 2006.Michael's passion for the State of Israel led him on a path to
defend the country and, unfortunately, he gave his life protect-ing Israel. Harriet Levin, Michael's mother, will be coming toCongregation B'nai Tikvah to speak about how her son's deathin the Lebanon War was not in vain, and also about theformation of the Lone Soldier Center. Come hear her inspiringstory and learn how we can support other Lone Soldiers’passion to defend the State of Israel as the Jewish Homeland.
The Lone Soldier Center was created in 2009 by a group ofMichael's friends, former lone soldiers, following through on adream of Michael's - to create a body to assist, feed, connectand care for lone soldiers in the IDF. Today they are making hisdream a reality; the Lone Soldier Center provides lone soldierswith meals, support, advice, housing and the family andcommunity they are missing.
There are currently over 7,000 lone soldiers from around theworld serving in the IDF. Three groups of young people areclassified as lone soldiers by the State of Israel: newimmigrants from abroad, Mahal volunteers (Jewish youth whovolunteer for IDF duty for 18 months), and Israeli-born lonesoldiers mostly from broken homes or Ultra-Orthodoxbackgrounds who have no family or have been disowned. While their fellow soldiers can rely on loving parents to housethem, provide meals, do laundry, help with finances, and just ascrucially, provide for the emotional needs of the young menand women tasked with defending the state, no such resourcesexisted for lone soldiers. The Lone Soldier Center’s staff andhundreds of volunteers work very hard to build this family andprovide for many of the basic off-base needs of lone soldiers. They do this to ensure that these soldiers will be included, supported and successful in adjusting to life in Israel.
Please RSVP by visiting www.bnaitikvah.org and clicking onthe May 30th Lone Soldier event on the calendar of events.
I hope to see you there!Shelly Talmud

USY / KADIMA
Can you believe it is already March? Our events so far havebeen very successful! We will keep striving to be the chapterwe want to be by focusing on the things we do best. Forexample, consistent participation at regional events andconventions, strong attendance at our chapter events, promot-ing inter-chapter relations, meaningful involvement in ourcongregational community and so much more!
January & February were busy months for our USY andKadima chapter and were filled with fun events! As a chapter,we had our first joint USY and Kadima off-site event at EastWindsor Bowl. Fun was had all around and we had a successfulturnout. Hoping to do another off-site event this year with evenmore involvement with our USYers and Kadimanicks. Januaryalso featured our movie nights. Kadima had a Saturday eveningmovie event where popcorn and ice cream were enjoyed, alongwith the hilarious and always enjoyable film Daddy Day Care.USY had their annual Chinese Food & Movie Night, whichwas SA/TO themed. Whichever movie among various choicesthat received the most Tzedakah proceeds was the movie se-lected to be viewed. The money was given to a charity of thechapter’s choice. In February, Kadima had their first annualShabbat together, where we spent Saturday morning servicestogether as a chapter, sang with ruach with USYers, andenjoyed Kiddush luncheon. Additionally, our USYers hosted avery fun event in the gym with the NSBUSY Inter-ChapterBasketball Tournament, where USYers from local chaptersjoined for a Basketball tournament.
Thank you to our Youth Commission for all the amazing helpand extra time they have dedicated to planning USY’s Mid-Winter convention. I want to give a special shoutout to themany people that we could not have done this without; AndrewGoldberger, David Kozodoy, Serena Blackin, Steve Juro,Kevin Krane, Terri Woller, Marlene Buckwald, Rochelle Rosen& Rob Blackin.
