CREATING A BACKGROUND & THE GRADIENT TOOL:12-17

14. 15.

16.

12.

13.

17.

12. Create a new background layer and place it at the bottom of your layer stack. 13. Using the rectangle tool draw a rectangle that covers your entire artboard. 14. Choose a gradient from the swatches panel to simulate the horizon. 15. If you do not have a gradient that you like you may open one form the (16.) swatches library drop down. 17. This is the gradient panel that allows you to edit the appearance of your gradient.

Page 12: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

18-19

18.19.

18. Change the angle of the gradient to 90 degrees from (19.) the dropdown

Page 13: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

RADIAL GRADIENTS, TRANSPARENCY & THE APPEARANCE PANEL:

20. Turn off the layer to make it easier to see what you are working on. 21. Add a radial gradient fill to the hexagonal panel.

27.

27.

28.

Page 16: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

11.

29. Turn on the layer named walls and go in and add a gradient layer to the fill of the artwork on this layer. 31. shows the metal panel swatches that was used to select the gradients used on this layer. Use the (32.) gradient tool to adjust and mimic the bends and curves of the wall directly on the screen as seen in image 33.

Gradients CONT'D & ADDING LAYERS IN THE APPEARANCE PANEL:

36. 37.

34. 35.

34. Continue to adjust the wall till you get them to a point that you feel that they are what you want or most accurately illustrates what you are trying to accomplis and always remember that you can use (35.) the layers panel to fine tune your gradients. 36. Next turn on the ramp walls layer and apply a common base color the all of the walls.

Page 18: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

39.

40.

42.

41.

38.

38. After you have applied the same fill color to all of the walls on the layer you can use the appearance panel to adjust the appearance of each wall by adding a second layer of fill and add an oppaciaty layer to them to add shade for added effect that illustrates angle and depth panels 39 & 40 show the differences in the two highlighted walls in image 38. 41. Turn on the ramp floors layer and apply a base color to all of the artwork on that layer like we did for the walls layer. 42 Shows this initial appearance for this layer.

Page 20: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

52.

48. 49.

50.

49. You can see in this image that I have a path that is missing a leg that would allow for the fill to cover the entire face of the stair riser. 50. I will add this leg by double clicking on the path to enter "isolation mode". You will notice that the rest of the artwork is now 50% lighter, this indicates that you are in isolation mode and what artwork you are working on. I then click on (51.) the pen tool and then the end of the path (52.) to start adding on to the path.

DIRECT TRANSFORMATION AND FINISHING TOUCHES:115. 116.

117.118.

115. On the background layer draw a rectangle that would be the edge of a building behind the space and use the (116.) appearance panel to layer in effects to give it a quality that you are looking for. 117. Use the reflect tool to make a mirror image of that rectangle and align it next to it (118.)

Page 36: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

119. 120.

121.

119. Add a blur effect to the background layer as the object in it are in the distance and behind a few layers of obscuring material (120.). Continue to add as many touches as you want until you get to your desired image (121.)

Page 37: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

SETTING UP ARTBOARDS & LAYOUTS:122. 123.

124.

122. Create a new file. 123. In the new document window you may create a standard size or any custom size artboard that you want. 124. Your new file will open and have only 1 layer, rename it grids or guides.

Page 38: FROM RHINO TO ILLUSTRATOR TECHNIQUES FOR RENDERING …

127

125. 126.

128.

125. Create 3 layer to go above the grid/guide layer. 126. Using the rectangle tool draw a box from corner to corner of your artboard on the grid/guide layer. 127. Using the transform panel adjust the size of the box to be 1" smaller in both the width and height. 128. Now go to the dropdown menu from objet and select path. split into grid.
